  • What better way to start a video about green era Maltese Ex London Transport AEC Swifts than with a blue one! As the weather outside is currently anything but Maltese with inches of snow, the opportunity arose to edit up this 10 minute Swift-fest to remind of better times. The video was recorded in April of 1994 (part of about an hour and a half's worth of Maltese transport) and shows the often maligned type going about their business long after being jettisoned from the UK capital. Many of them had been much modified in then typical Maltese manner and those with a keen ear might detect one with a Leyland 510 engine (as per Leyland National). Amongst those seen are some near original to others where the engines have been shifted from the rear to the centre often then gaining manual transmission with the process. There was also a tendency to re-name Swifts which had had their engines moved to the centre, Reliance - broadly in line with AEC classification. Most of the shots were taken around Valletta bus station as the magnetic pull of the place proved almost impossible to break away from! Oh, the blue ones which make an odd appearance belonged to the Maltese Ministry of Education, their little fleet went on to achieve celebrity status.

There is something about the Malta Swift which looks so right. They suited the Island far more than they ever did the Capital.
With the Maltese "clone" ergomatic grille and heavy bumpers they looked so modern in the yellow era.
