    it should also be mentioned that, at of the clips they chose to show, not only did Mara sing it the best, but she acted the hell out of it and made it look easy. that's what won her the part

    Oh guys. All these are good vocalists. This song is so high and not easy to sing. I got a call back for this role recently and am preparing for it. Bless my neighbors I need to make them cookies my walls are paper thin. That last note is out of my belting range but I was asked to sing it at the audition and still got called back for it even though I felt crazy. All that to say, most of the time, you sing what you're asked to sing and even if you know it might not sound great, you try it because you never know. Anyway, that's part of it. Entertainers do as we're told or don't work. All of these ladies are probably amazing vocalists within their ranges.

    Knowing how professional casting works, sometimes they do a dance call and then ask for people to sing afterwards. Mara is classically trained and definetly had a leg up because she's a beautiful dancer and vocalist long trained vocalist. I come back to watch this video all the time because it literally makes me stop breathing sometimes. She's truly such an amazing performer.

    Revisiting this in honour of Bob Avian’s passing today, Rest In Peace to a Broadway legend.
    As well: not only does Mara nail the ending, but her phrasing is also gorgeous - at the very top she sings ‘at the ballet / raise your arms and someone’s always there’ all in one breath. Talk about support and power.

    He gives them the key at the beginning. “You don’t have to scream it” They were all pushing too hard and screaming through it. None of them had anywhere to go for the crescendo and they weren’t able get there. It’s not an uncommon mistake when singing.

      People say “good girl” when it’s an older experienced person speaking to a younger less experienced person as a way of saying “good job”. I’ve had people say that to me. It isn’t rude or condescending it’s sweet and shows you truly think that person did well by referring to them in such a personal way.

    • @kiwilerner
      @kiwilerner 4 года назад +4

      He wasn't being intentionally condescending, he was complimenting/encouraging her. Aside from "good girl" being an idiom (no one says "good woman!" in that context), it's also just part of dance lingo. There's a long, *long* tradition of male and female dancers, from musicals to ballet, being called "boys" and "girls." Heck, we hear it throughout "A Chorus Line" whenever the character Zach (the choreographer) and Larry (his assistant) address the dancers to separate the groups. Especially in the opening number during the choreo auditions.
      Anyhoo, Bob Avian, the director who said this, co-choreographed the original production, and is just used to that dance world culture.
