As requested by many of you, I'll cover the plot of some of the most important plays from the kabuki repertoire and explain some of the most basic concepts. I hope you enjoy them and it is not too bothersome for the people already familiar with them!
The daimyos of japan lived spectacular life, they attend Kabuki seated with their conquered rivals after war, boasting their victory. Imagine yourself with your enemy watching it with silence and respect. A marvelous tradition not to be seen again.
Takehira's men's "heads" rolling on stage when Kagemasa struck them down wasnt something I expected. That was pretty cool. I wish I could understand enough of this kind of Japanese to watch a whole play. But its very hard for me to understand.
I love shibaraku have you seen Onna shibaraku different but interesting The hero is replaced in the play by his sister because he was busy and everyone is shocked to see someone else in the role to summarize
Hi Kabuki In-Depth, I am a huge fan and supporter of your amazing channel and I absolutely love and can't get enough of your superb content! Thank you so much on the behalf of everyone for creating such high quality content for English speaking individuals and giving us a chance to enjoy and indulge in the world of Kabuki too. I'm a beginner in the Japanese language and my ability to understand the intricate and complex dialogue with the rich vocabulary used is relatively poor. Is there a way I can find full Kabuki plays online that are subbed in English? Would you also be able to upload full kabuki plays that are subbed? Thank you for your time!
I appreciate very much your support! Other channels have tried to present full kabuki plays, but sooner or later they are taken down due to copyright claims. Hopefully Shochiku releases some kind of streaming service in the future, but for now the best we can do on RUclips is to give a glimpse into these beautiful plays. We have a small collection of black & white performances, though, and I would love to subtitle some of them in the future if I find the time. Good luck with the language by the way!
I'm a convert...puppet theatre passed through town rarely.. a model town, with flying-fox, was a novelty at trade-fairs, back in the day...(and blitz trucks).
The things the Japanese do better than anyone else on earth: opera, drawing, printing, animation, gardening, and architecture (particularly concerning aesthetics).
Lmao 🙄 you clearly don't know Chinese ones and how japan took inspiration from them. CCP ruined the current generation but you can still find these cultural arts amongst the common people and around the world.
Initially, the ancestors were women who gave birth to this discipline, then women pushed it to its glory. However, after that, women were banned from working in the very field that they were born in and dedicated to, so now fame and position are reserved for men, how bitter is this gender prejudice in Japanese culture in particular and East Asian culture in general.
Outfits outstanding. But acting and music just too calm, too sleepy. If you like it, OK, but so far I am not a fan of the Kabuki. Maybe I am not an expert but such theaters need to be made in a way, you could figure out the plot even if you are foreigner. Or at least be entertained.

That was just brilliantly explained. Thank you!
Perfect 2:30 am RUclips stuff

My last day in Tokyo I got the chance to see Kabuki. The best way to end the trip in Tokyo.
Lucky
🎎 You are lucky!! 🙇🙇
The makeup + costume combos are MAGNIFICENT. It's my own hope and wish to see a kabuki presentation if I ever get the chance to visit Japan!
“Wait a moment” was referenced in Samurai Champloo when they took the Dutch ambassador on a tour of Edo.
The Dutch were everywhere 😅
Takehira's men's "heads" rolling on stage when Kagemasa struck them down wasnt something I expected. That was pretty cool.

I have no idea what I just watched, but it was spectacular.
One of the best programs I’ve ever seen on the kabuki and it’s history ❤❤❤
The costume of Kagemasa must be the most uncomfortable thing to walk on.
Yup, and that crap must be HEAVY. 😭
Very heavy :)
I love shibaraku have you seen Onna shibaraku different but interesting
The hero is replaced in the play by his sister because he was busy and everyone is shocked to see someone else in the role to summarize
Yes, it is a truly fascinating parody, full of the unmistakable humor of Edo! I briefly mention it at the end of this video.
This style has grown on me. It's epic, comical, satirical and dramatic. Would love to see it live.
Thanks! I had no idea of the story line for this one.
Somehow the aesthetics of the hero got me intrigued

It's also rare and amazing to hear it spoken in English! but still in the same stylized way, revealing the unusualness vs standard speech.
This channel is awesome thank you!
Fantastic video, thank you for making it. You just earned a new subscriber.
Thanks! This is very informative. What a great form of theater.
Buongiorno vi adoro molto siete unici con i costumi super complimenti vi guardo sempre eureka grazie 👍👏🎉😍
I love this form of theatre!
Basically anime irl
Anime is not like this Anime Maybe traditional anime?
It has a lot of the same stylistic elements, the bombastic characters and speeches, the posing, the "typing" of characters. I can see what OP meant.
@@rellosapostolos2266 i like to watch this more than anime
MAAAAAAAN 2 YEARS AGO IT WAS REALLY DIFFICULT TO FIND THIS
Onna Shibaraku was the only one available
Amazing, thank you so much!
The Kabuki Character at the very beginning he looks like a powerful character 😳
I hope one day I will see this performance in real life!
Amo el kabuki 😍😍😍😍

احب هذا الفن الجميل وأستمتع به 👏🏻❤️
Thank you, I love it. Love from Sweden 💛💙
I understand their commercials a lot more now.
สุดยอด น่าทึ่งและสวยงามในเวลาเดียวกัน ❤
The decapitation scene had me speechless.
It's like an Ukiyo-e painting come to life 😀

I know Genroku, he was a vassal of one of Nobunaga's rebellious Oda uncles.
Nobunaga spared him, and he went on to serve Nobunaga.
Отличная традиция.супер
Very interesting well done 👍
Und immer locker.
Very mystical Japanese theater truly is.
I wasn't aware Master Yoda enjoyed kabuki...
@@sableonblonde1973 lol.

Kabuki is so friggin cool.
They have so much vocabulary that can't be translated 😮
Gracias desde Chile 🇨🇱🗿
What song plays at the start?!?
So very grateful im an American
Yeah be grateful of not having such wonderful culture and literature since you don't have your own culture and your history is bland as hell
The things the Japanese do better than anyone else on earth: opera, drawing, printing, animation, gardening, and architecture (particularly concerning aesthetics).
China and Japan both are rich in tradition
Lmao 🙄 you clearly don't know Chinese ones and how japan took inspiration from them. CCP ruined the current generation but you can still find these cultural arts amongst the common people and around the world.
That's what u get when you develop your own culture through centuries without the external influence of any other country 🎉
I disagree on pretty much everything except maybe gardening.
@@Tharsix36 How long have you lived in Japan? And… do you have good taste?
Man, this is great. Like Wagner in Japanese.
They move and dance like their robots
I get it now...its a puppet show...live tv.

interessante
Kanjuro!!!!!!
I thought first part sounds kinda sus
The main character is 18th century super hero.

Calm? Oh no
Learn a bit about No theater. Kabuki is anything but calm, it's like the original exploitation movies. Didn't you notice the mass decapitation? 😂
Kabuki was not made to entertain foreigners, it was to entertain the common people of the Edo period, entertain then was different than it is now.
One piece wano arc:
also the first appearance of Jiraya in Naruto, Honda's celebration and first Gear 4's Luffy.
