      @punctuationman334 4 года назад +37

TheArklyte the biggest problem in Star Wars is that it constantly tries to one up itself. Death Star 1 gets destroyed, so let’s make an even BIGGER Death Star. Oh that one is gone, let’s make an even bigger death star that destroys entire solar systems! It isn’t always in size either. You have shit like the sun crusher in legends which is just a bit bigger than your average star fighter and can fuck entire solar systems anyways. Star Wars needs to stop doing this, it’s annoying as hell.

At the end of the day, all of the SSDs are mostly meaningless outside of the Eclipse and the Bellator.
Making a ship any larger than these or making other types is meaningless as those two classes already achieve everything required for combat.
The only thing that you would do next if you could find a reason to make a larger ship is to have one that carries star destroyers and would be used for expansion beyond Imperial space, acting as a mobile invasion headquarters.

@@punctuationman334 Its not so much that it is Star wars itself. Its the nature of old Sheev Palpatine hes not only compensating for a lack of something. But also hes a dramatic character that has to make his point in the most over the top manner. He just can't be the evil emperor of the galaxy he has to be the evil emperor with epic show pieces that do really cool things but are impractical and huge waste of taxpayer dollars in the Star Wars universe. Yes I admit even I like the impractical AT -AT walker. But the Death Stars and imperial Super Star destroyers make building a 6 story walker look like a wise investment. XD.
Also it doesn't help that the writers framed Palpatine to be that way with the script lol.

I wasn't saying every example just a lot of them. And well to be fair both in legends and cannon now he does comeback from the dead if only briefly only to die again. yes I know like half those things were after his death or at least first known death. However I am sure he gave inspiration at least for star killer base to any idiot's of the first order who Idealized him.
Its not just palpatine but he played a large role in the whole i need something stupid big and i want it right now and if that stupid big thing is destroyed make an even bigger stupid thing.
Also that is just part of the fun i guess for the creators of star wars to see what grand project we can do next just because and since it is sci fi fantasy where space wizards can be a thing I guess planet sized starbase's that destroy planets is okay.
Not that I disagree with the point you are trying to make. Just that old Sheev had to do everything over top along with the writers/ creators of star wars even after the emperors death in the stories.
Its not like its an Historical piece like the movie dunkirk , midway or 1917 were you can be like that was was bs right there that didn't actually happen during the war or something like that.
Again not that you can't take issue with craziness or stupidity of star wars at time. But the creators can be like this isn't real we can one up ourselves as much as we want as its not based of true events that we have to stick to with not a lot of holly wood liberties to take or other wise they are doing history a dis service.
Just saying they can say whatever they want about the reasoning for their over the top decision where you or I agree with them. And Characters like Palpatine only further exaggerate such dumb as hell projects. Even I was like wtf was old sheev thinking with the Death Star one and 2 he must have been high as fuck lmao.

It is one of my favourite Star Wars ship just because it is a more practical and sensible Star Dreadnought than all others, it is shorter but still large enough to outgun any battlecruiser and even entire fleets. These days I am split between that one and the Executor, the latter for how well it suits itself for narrative purposes.

I mean, the Alliance took on the entire firepower of the imperial outer rim third fleet, some 9 Ardent-class frigates, and 7 pellaeon class destroyers. All that without its shield falling completely. Further more it has way more fire power then a pellaeon and gravity mines to interdict and keep ships from jumping to hyper space. Simply said, the Imperious class is a pocket star dreadnought, on that I think can take on any SSD short of the Eclipse, even then I think it could tank a super laser shot or 2.

The Imperious is a pretty definite sign on how shields and weapons have increased in the legacy era. It's probably got the highest ratio of power-per-effectiveness of any capital ship, though a big enough disparity in size could beat it in firepower even there it's noted for being fast for it's size and can claim advantageous positions to give it a shot.

While we haven't gotten hard stats for them, I think the implied size of the Pius Dea cathedral ships would put them in dreadnaught scale, or large battle cruiser at minimum.
They were said to be gigantic during a period much later than Xim, during which ships which appear to be over one kilometer long were commonly in use by the navies of the core world's, at least from the depictions of the Alsakani fleet during the Alsakan conflicts.

#AskEcks _What is the level of power increase of a Xyston from a Imperial One?_
After taking into account the 50% size increase, how much more firepower does a Xyston have and *how would that scale to smaller ships?*
Could you (or some super physics sci fi geek) do the math and then apply it to some pretty iconic Star Wars ships.
Such as a _CR90_ Xyston variant.
The Millennium Falcon (maybe fitted between the front prongs)
The heavy Tie (it has a main gun location)
A few of the standard snubfighters - including a Y wing with one fitted.
And then for real laughs, hand weapons - obviously semi auto now with a _slow_ rate of fire.
A tripod crew serviced blaster (don't mess with a Wookie).
    Chewies bowcaster (Wookies again)
    A Xyston E-11
And Han's blaster (he takes out at least half the Mos Eisley Cantina along with Greedo - but if Greedo did fire first 🙄 then the near miss got Han and probably Greedo as well).
_Power Creep, when you're out of original concepts … …_

Welp, whilst not canon any longer, the Conqueror isd was a moded isd around 1ABY, and it had a superlaser with power equivalent to that of the eclipse. We all know that the first order was experimenting with miniaturized Death star tech. So add all the lessons learned from 35 or so years, some with sorcery , and palps just shouting DEW IT at the engineers for 30 years and the xyston, which is 1.5 time the size of the ISD could probably get to planet killing levels. Would be nice to get a concrete explanation though.

A challenge? Great! Physics hat on, but I warn you, I'm working with some assumed data, so I may be a bit out on some things.
So, to do a direct comparison is not really possible. We just don't have the data, and what little we have is, um, sketchy (Eck mentioned this in his vid about turbolasers. Bear in mind that Star Wars doesn't like obeying the laws of physics).
So, we see in Star Wars Battlefront II 2005 in the campaign an ISD performing orbital bombardments. Specifically, at the end of the Hoth mission. Let's say the area targeted was 1 mile in radius and circular. To get a fireball of equal size, the zone of total death where everything is vaporised, you need 2 megatons of TNT or 8.368*10^15 joules. Let's say this ISD was giving it everything she had in that cutscene, the barrage lasted about 10 seconds. 8.368*10^14 Watts is its output.
A vid I watched about how much energy the DS-1 would've needed to blow up Alderaan gave me the figure of 2.3*10^32 joules, or about 5.5*10^18 megatons of TNT. Because we're trying to compare the Xyston, not the Death Star, the total energy spent will be the same for the same target.
As you can see, it's a big difference between a Xyston and an ISD.
OK, so let's assume the Xyston took 10 minutes to destroy the planet (I can't remember how long it took in the film, plus there's editing cuts, so forgive me). That means it would've been able to sustain 3.833*10^29 Watts, or 458,094,327,597,195.6 times the power of an ISD. Maybe Han was right after all.
These figures, to me, make the Xyston seem very OP. Even if we nerf the Xyston down a lot, so it took a day instead of 10 mins, that's still 3,181,210,608,313.858 times the power of an ISD for only a 1.5x rescale.
Regardless, I hope you found this all interesting.

    • @Jfk2Mr
      @Jfk2Mr 4 года назад +7

According to square cube law, making dimensions 50% larger makes surface 1,5²=2,25 times larger and volume 1,5³=3,375 times larger. This is only rough estimate, as scale effect (a lot of internal stuff do not need to have multiplied dimensions), design and technology come into play. So I make educated guess that it would have about 4 ISD powerplant under assumption that it was made in exact technology that gave us ISD powerplant. Additionally, some of warship power used could be from capacitors which were charged when not in combat, but for our purposes we assume that both vessels did not use this feature

SSD's are heavily underestimated by the fanbase, I think. It seems really popular to say that very large ships are useless and everyone should just use nothing but smaller ships. But people just ignore the major advantages of a single large ship.
Firstly, a singular very large ship can carry far more soldiers and material than an equivalent cost in smaller ships, making them more useful for planetary invasions. Plus, the weaponry of very large ships is more effective against planetary shields. So they make good siege ships.
Second, a single very large ship is a better flagship. If you need your admiral to command from a position of power where they are harder to destroy then a single powerful ship will be harder for the enemy to destroy. If your flagship is jsut some random frigate the enemy will target it and destroy it very quickly, and you will lose your commander.
Thirdly, small ships are more vulnerable to hit and run attacks. Large ships have powerful armor and shields; they either can, or cannot, be penetrated by enemy ships, and if they cant then no amount of hit and run or attrition tactics will break them. Many small ships on the other hand, you only need enough firepower to penetrate the defenses of a single enemy ship, and if you can accomplish that then you can kill them one by one. Similarly, when you have a singular large ship its harder to disrupt your total firepower, as unless your able to completely breach its defenses and destroy it your not able to even weaken the enemy fleet. Whereas, many small ships can be destroyed one-by-one, depriving the enemy fleet of their firepower and marines.

I am not totally against Battleship and Dreadnought classes. I just see them as your ace card up your sleeve. You don't need to mass produce them to the point of standard capital ships. you just need enough of them to defend core and key locations while at the same time projecting a presence of power to anyone who considers to fuck with your faction lol.
Most situations a heavy cruiser is fine as a flag ship of smaller patrol fleets dealing with pirates and insurgents a like or smaller conventional battles. Or as part of a small advance flotilla to the main force.
Battlecruisers and dreadnoughts com in handy during a large naval engagement especially if you adversary has number advantage in capital ships as the bigger ships can be force multiplayer and dreadnoughts could easily take on multiple smaller capital ships one on one . But snub fighters can be a problem so it is always good to have small nimble corvettes and patrol craft along with anit -fighter frigates to support. As well as your own screen fighters and or gunships to.
Dreadnoughts, Battleships and Battlecruiser's also tank damage acting as a shield or distraction for the rest of the fleet to flank and encircle the enemy limiting its effectiveness enemy ships are easily caught in a cross fire. Also having some interdicting ships could be handy to prevent the enemy from retreating allowing for total destruction of the enemy fleet or its surrender.
I like having very large capital ships like dreadnoughts but because they are costly investment I rather have them in reserve or use them in battles were they can be me most effective or get the most usage out of.
Like I am not gonna send a dreadnought after some slightly problematic back world faction or pirates and such. The job could easily be done with a few cruiser's comprised of heavy and lights. As well as a few destroyers and frigates with have a dozen corvettes . Like I am not gonna send a dreadnought with a small fleet of like 2 dozen or more ships with most being auxiliary ships or support ships. The Gas bill alone isn't worth it to hyperspace all the way their only to not contribute to the fight because the smaller capital ships were sufficient to deal with this small threat.
Now if your Talking about a going to war with another faction that rivals you in battle or is seen a huge threat to area of controlled space and shipping lanes. Where you going to be fighting against's hundreds or thousands of enemy warships of all classes then yes I say its time to bring in the big guns of the fleet. Now having said that I would still want the crews to always at operational readiness meaning that their crews are well trained and prepared to fight when called upon that way the crews are prepared as much as they can be ahead of time.
But that's just my take don't need dreadnoughts and Battleships all the time or even Battlecruiser's. But still handy to have when you need them. I say it is better to be prepared to have such tools around to use but not needed than needed but don't have the capabilities lol.

Anytime you would ever use a star dreadnought in star wars, you could easily just use a battle cruiser for the same role. It is larger, better shielded, more heavily armoured and carries more guns than probably everything in the enemy fleet. It is an impressive flag ship, and everyone recognizes it on sight.
And for a fraction of the cost.
A Praetor or an Allegiance would dwarf an Imperial, which is already very bloated in comparison to its firepower and durability. Putting a giant infantry garrison on a battleship was a dumb idea to begin with.

Oh this sounds fun but a bit of a mismatch.
Sontarans vs Klingons, in an all out war the Klingon Empire falls without causing the Sontarons to really notice they are in yet another war. It's a simple case of numbers and tech, the Sontarons outnumber the Klingons by a factor of thousands to millions to one, and have no sense of self preservation. As for tech, the Sontarons can blow up planets, and think nothing of doing it, the klingons lack this capability. Now in a pure ground battle with balanced forces, it's likely the klingons will win as the Sontarons will want to fight fair, and are weaker in melee than a Klingon.
As for the Daedalus vs the Kelvin, pre-refit it's a hands down win for the Kelvin "if" it can bring down the Asguard sheilds. Post refit it's more balanced but again if the daedalus's sheilds can be brought down, it's the Kelvins win. Simply put, the Kelvin is throwing around firepower thats actually brokenly OP, its torpedoes have yields measured in hundreds of gigatons, and it's still only using early versions of the photon torpedo.

I would go one step further, the Bellator is the best designed Star Dreadnought in the setting. It outguns entire fleets, and is still cheaper than an Executor or a Mandator. If you are going to build them, just build loads of Bellators. And if you already have a dozen or score of Executors then there is no reason to ever build anything with more firepower.
Either of them or even just fleet of ISDs and smaller vessels can easily wipe out a city, a continent and devastate a planetary environment for centuries to come. There is absolutely no reason to build a weapon that is able to explode a planet in a single shot, there is no reason to ever do that.
When the Death Star was build, the Galactic Empire already possessed the power to wipe out entire civilizations.

Great video, though EGTW said fleets of large battleships vs fleets of smaller ships went in out of favor over the many millennia the Republic existed. I know there are no hard numbers, but you have the planetary navy battleships of the Alsakan conflicts, the Pius Dea Cathedral ships, Cal-class Republic planet buster battleships, like you mentioned the Star of Corusant superdreadnought, and all those large command ships from the Great Sith Wars. IMHO, I always thought the ship size & length being linear up until the Imperial era is very silly. There no good reason ships of those size could not have existed long before then, considering the technology involved. My count is also close as total Imperial Star Dreadnoughts you mentioned, I got 47 confirmed, then maybe 13 more. My head canon, with shipyards across the Galaxy, low 1,000s of Star Dreadnoughts & Battlecruisers, but that's just me.
