- a viewer gave me some old kohler command engines after they failed, we got one good one for a tractor last week, so let's see what we can do with the remaining 3 engines that do not run.
I love the sound of rain especially on the metal roof reminds me of my childhood.
Much better than watching Meet the Press on a Sunday morning.
Happy Father’s Day Darren and to all of the other Dad’s. I just love seeing trashed items coming back to life. Coffee and Mustie.

Hey thanks
Man, I been building engines (car including racing engines, motorcycle, lawn mower engines, etc.) and ALWAYS used a drill to lap valves in. Yeah, had my share of trolls telling me I ain't doing it right. But it's only a bad idea if it doesn't work, right? Out of hundreds of lapped valves for the past 50 years, I never, ever had even one didn't seal and work reliably. Kudo's to you!
another fun video. Nice to see stuff being recycled..
It didn’t want to shut off because you brought it new life 👍
Good morning everyone from Lincolnshire UK 🇬🇧
At 70 years of age I'm still learning about engines. Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge base.
Hey Mustie, thanks for keeping it real. You have zero ads, zero promotions and zero baloney.
You've been doing it this way for years and I remain impressed. Keep doing what you're doing!
And another runner after Mustification!
Yay!
Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
mustification, i like it
You are informative and entertaining. How you simply explain things is very helpful. I love how you always laugh when a hopeless looking engine you've worked your magic on, fires off and runs for the first time. Thanks for the videos!
Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there. 🥩🍺🦞
Amen, Happy Father’s Day

Cheers to all you bastards like me
Not all of them. Some can die in fires.
@@mostlymotorizedMy psychiatrist say I crave attention and will do anything to get it, How would he know?
Copper spray gasket, it would be great for these projects. Spray both sides of old intact gasket and ready to go.
agreed!
Nice
Never heard of it. Interesting!
@@beakittelscherz5419 it's a bit pricey but it goes a long way..sold at most parts stores.
I used to work at a equipment rental company. Out back we had a pretty good size junk pile of old broken equipment. I managed to scrounge together enough parts to build a running 8hp Honda engine. I ended up giving it to a co worker for a go kart motor.
I totally enjoy your excitement when the engines fire up ... makes me smile too!😊
Would love to see another video combining the two "junk" engines into one good (hopefully) one.
Good video. It's always fun to see someone else's thought process for making a motor out of parts machines.
What I like with Mustie is that he is really good sharing his thoughts when troubleshooting. He invite us to join the job and it works.
@frank-t6857 Agree. When working in front of the camera you have to let the stream of thought just... happen. It helps others know why you are doing the steps in the order you do then
The engine rebuild videos are my favorites :) I hope you make a video on repairing the thrown rod, that'd be awesome!
Please, at least open it up so we can see what was damaged.
Keep going would like to see one of the other ones going too I reckon you can achieve it out of what's left 🙂
I love the small engine/VW stuff. Making engines run with minimal investment is awesome to watch. I'm old but, I'm still learnin'. Thanks, Darren.
Great Father's Day video. Got coffee and it's raining here. The storm will clear up in an hour and low temperatures will be here to just relax and enjoy the day.
As always the best of knowledge and entertainment, I do have to add your such a big child😂😂🇮🇪
Mixing the right tools with the right knowledge is a powerful thing. That's why I just sit in the corner of the shop and watch. Thanks, Mustie, for the chair.
SUNDAYS are always exciting with MR.MUSTIE Engine Rebuild Thank you sir.
I know absolutely nothing about engines, barely know where the fuel goes in my car, but every time I watch one of your videos, I feel like I've learnt something.
Am I the only one that really enjoys the snap that carb screws make when being removed?
It's a great sound.
No, you're not :) Imo it's the sound of victory.
Another great Mustie save 😊 🎉🎉🎉 & hell yeah Darren rip that other old lump apart to save the one with the dodgy rings , I love these old motor saves they're such an enjoyable afternoons entertainment! You're skills on you tube have helped me save loads of old small engines here in the UK 🇬🇧 a Sunday without Mustie is like a day without sunshine 🌞 ☀️ 😉
Mustie is amazing. Even when he is working on something I have nooo interest in, I find myself mesmerised and watch the whole episode and am glad for the experience.
How can you have no interest in shooting flames? I mean it's flames that shoot.
@@1pcfred yes we humans, discovered fire then controlled it. Let’s just not destroy it by fire!
I'm the same. I'm a computer guy. I like electronics... But when he gets these old worn out engines to fire back up, it's very exciting. Especially, as has been mentioned, when flames shoot out.
@@billkurek5576 sometimes destruction by fire is fun too. Burn it!
I always look forward to your vidios. Bringing that engine back from the dead was one of the best.Keep them comming!!!
great job mustie! kohler engine quality has diminished within the last decade or so, the old school command engines were def worth diagnosing and fixing!
I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Father's Day. Also, Mustie a quick thing I do when disassembling anything with my little cordless impact guns. I have a few of them, over the years just collected them, I put different sockets on each gun, usually a 10 a 13 and 14 or whatever this way I actually save time switching sockets, just grab different gun next to me. It works
That's a good idea. Now that battery drills are a commodity and can be picked up at garage sales for next to nothing, it does save time. I did the same thing replacing over 100 screws on a carport. All the old metal screws had corroded the aluminum roof deck (galvanic action) causing multiple leaks. As the poster indicated, I used three drills as my restoration tool team [insert Tim Allen's Tool Time growl here] - one drill to remove old screws, one drill to grind off corrosion and the last one to install new screws (with rubber washers and dollop of sealant). Worked like a charm. No leaks!
BTW - Excellent video Darren. Nothing better than making 3-2=1. It was a blast seeing the successful engine barking and spitting flames.
@@markhelseth253 exactly the way i pretty much do any job, and i do the same kinds of tasks. Excellent
Happy Father's day to all!
I was down in southern NH this weekend. It rained Friday & poured Saturday! Nice Sunday!
Great stuff Darren. Man you sure do persevere. Thank you for all the entertaining your give.
I don't know if Great stuff would work for those head gaskets...lol
I'd be happy to watch a part 3 on these engines!
Do another project video with other two engines also. This was great fun. A treat on Father's Day.
It must be so much fun to have all of the tools, knowledge and experience to do what you do...so awesome!
He didn't use that many tools. You can certainly do it with less too. Some tools are just convenience items. They're nice to have but aren't necessities. You'll definitely get further faster with those extra tools though.
Have used the painted gasket trick for years but you want to put them together with the paint wet it acts as a gasket sealant and works really well. It sets up pretty fast so once you spray them you want to get the head on pretty quick.
love this channel......great for sunday mornings before the wife is up 👍👍
Brilliant watching you resurrect these little engines they are so willing to run once you have overhauled them.I am amazed
Copper Cote spray gasket sealer is what we used on head gaskets, reusing or new. But yea the aluminum paint was the shade tree trick.
SUCCESS, brilliant save, now go and rebuild
1working Motor from the other 2.
That will be a good video to follow on with
I've replaced more Kohler head gaskets than I can count. Many were warped heads. I also went to solid copper head gaskets.
Many years ago, I had a 7 hp Cub Cadet with a Kohler engine. I overhauled it but anytime you would run it more than three hours straight, she would blow the head gasket. I replaced it several times. I finally ran a tap down the the head bolt threads, added an extra washer to the head bolts, and over torqued the bolts by 10%. No more issues after that.
I love this video format, they're like short stories. "Whats wrong with it, can it be saved" And its a 3 act process to answer those questions we experience together. The other videos are great too, I love unusual and off kilter machines, but I'm really here for the off beat repair videos. Keep doing you Mustie, never change. Also a Kholer motor with no exhaust and no governor sounds downright mean, Id love to hear a v6 or v8 version of this.
I had 7hp Briggs that burned oil (someone tried to check the oil with it running) and 8hp Briggs that had a hole in the block (someone trying to pry the flywheel off). So I used the 8hp parts in the 7hp block. Crank, connecting rod, cam, piston, rings, head, and bottom case was from the 8hp. I think the carb was from an 11hp. It was one of the best engines I had.
You da man Mustie.Great video as allways. All the best to you .Keep em rolling rolling.
I'm always amazed with your knowledge and willingness to wrench problems away! I truly enjoy your videos.
Alwasy a good watch your channel! A good backup keep some 1.3mm copper around to make an head gasket of can not get one easy!
Wooooow the table turned out to be a beautiful beautiful piece .the denim glasses would be a great match for the table .awesome work my brother what a beautiful table
Excellent save bringing it back from near dead....bravo 👏 I see your vision on combining the two to make a V4 in series..kinda like you see in the tractor pulls..be a cool project I am sure there are videos of mating engines like that.. Anyhow truly appreciate you sharing your skills and knowledge of all things mechanical with us.😎🛠️🚜🇺🇸🔧
Few months ago Jims Automotive did a full machine shop rebuild on one of these tiny heads. The juxtaposition is great. Thanks for sharing Mustie
That was the best at no cost I have ever seen see if it can Mustie can and we have a back up motor and maybe another back up or 4 cylinder it's endless for Mustie thank you for sharing and your time was really great never miss a video and can't wait for next video. 😊
just simply love the jet engine afterburner effect from the exhaust ports, I could watch it all day, and I like how it used up every little bit of petrol plus the fumes 😅.
my favorite RUclipsr BY FAR!! love your videos brother!
Happy Father’s Day Darryl!! Thanks for sharing
The Rain sounds good !! ...ASMR maybe .... GREAT video. I love the Kohler teardowns & builds. My garden tractor has 25 HP horizontal Kohler w/ 225 hours. Runs great.
Great video.nice to see one run for now.... You still have 1 1/2 engines left.
Good morning Mustie Family, time for coffee and out to the shop. Happy Father’s Day to the dads out there.
Well done. Amazing what a little cleaning can do.
Great video! I've got to be more optimistic about repairing small engines. Your easy going attitude is hard to emulate, but very therapeutic to watch! Thanks for sharing!
It can help to not get too emotionally invested. I know it can be tough when it feels important to you. I don't know if optimism helps. But just remaining neutral and taking it as it comes seems best. Get excited when it's done and works.
@@1pcfred Thanks, I was excited when it worked, but my inexperience negated common sense, and subsequent tweaking turned into twonking, and I'm back at the disassembled engine, this time requiring machining and new parts!
@@tolbaszy8067 I think I know what you mean when it comes to engine work that doesn't end up working out. There's a few things if you don't get them right makes things go wrong. Even if said engine initially does run.
Great job Darren, glad you got one put together and running smoothly….
Amazing to see the engine was fine just needed the valves cleaned and relapped. Bravo mustie
Thank you mustie for this and all your video's, I have been watching for years now and have loved every one of them.
Darren, amazing! I really enjoyed watching you bring this one back to life! Press on and get the others going...Why not! :)
Musti thank you for doing this video it was really interesting to see how you went about troubleshooting everything it's been a huge help watching cuz I've had a couple of engines that have the similar problems now that I know what I'm looking for I do believe I can tackle them and get them going and they're cooler engines I got from a lawn mower company that does landscaping so thank you very much you have a great day and happy Father's Day to you You're an awesome person to watch and like everybody else says you're very informative and your explanation of everything that you do is easy to understand thank you again
Support that brother 🙏
Hi I never stop learning from watching 👀 you thank you🎉 I repair my push mower last summer and it takes one pull it starts ever time 😊thank you !
Thank you, I'm totally addicted to your videos and have been for at least five years. Never miss one😁 Back in the day (1970) we used sheet copper (20 thou) to make head gaskets when all else failed.
Back in the day I used to use K&W Copper Coat on gaskets. Seals well and helps with heat dissipation.
I spent 30 years working on this kind of stuff ...still can't get enough of watching mustie do it haha happy dad day !
That was very satisfying to watch. No cash outlay and a great result. I reckon you'll get another one going with the bits you still have.
Zero dollar repairs are the best kind!
Happy father's day to everyone, including you Darren.
God Bless.. Happy Father's Day to All.. love the video.
Really enjoyed this video watched from start to end, it shows your engineering knowledge and is extremely entertaining! Please do a repeat with the other engines!!! And thank you from good’old England!
Chug a chug chug! Sounds great Darren!
Years ago I was a supplier quality investigator for Caterpillar Tractor Company and had a Cushman four wheel cart I would run building to building in and it had one of those engines. I believe they called those an anti dieseling valve that shut off the fuel so it wouldn't run on after you shut off the key. Mine developed an intermittent problem where sometimes it would work and other times it wouldn't close all the way and would backfire and sound like a 12 gauge shotgun going off. Scared more than one person before truck repair got it figured out.
55:40 I bet that clogged solenoid wasn't letting fuel through so they ran it with the choke on to keep it running.
Melted his jump box clamp
After the first video on the tractor I am so glad to see you going for the "ménage à trois"... yes I went there!
Fascinating work. I don't know about watching you do two more, I do appreciate this one. But let's face it, if you do it again, I'll watch it again.
Yeah who can ever get enough of shooting flames?
I'd be more than happy for Darren to do a video showing the resurrection of another of these.
@@SlartiMarvinbartfast even though they're the same what he runs into is always different. But he has so much stuff he's doing all the time. I can't imagine he has the time to mess with another one.
@26:18 just love the no nonsense way of lapping the valve with the drill and a rubber hose. I hate seeing guys lapping those with the small wooden stuff that have a succion cup at the end. So tedious to do it that way.
Worked in a machine shop and we used a drill press to take valve springs out and in. Took small open end wrench and bent into L shape, welded it to rod, put in chuck and then just lower the chuck down to collapse spring to get the keepers out.
You found the perfect RUclips engine algorithm. I would use this information wisely. Keep up the great vids.
Flywheel side only crankshaft. Don't believe I've ever seen a Kohler Command configured that way before. Nice save on the engine my Friend! Cheers! Zip~
That compression test was suspenseful!
Happy Father’s Day Mustie1. You make every Sunday better. Especially when you throw a midweek video in there. Thanks for all you do for us. So awesome.
Happy Fathers Day from me too.
Nice job on getting one engine alive. Now try for two. Good luck.😁
Mustie making a Sunday a pleasure as always! Keep it up min, watching you all the way fae Scotland
17:41 Copper, actually, and they straight up sold the stuff in parts stores back in the day. I think they might still sell it. That being said, pretty much any paint will do in a pinch...Puddin, of Puddin's Fab Shop, just used regular black spray paint on a 32 Model A head gasket and it worked! Bolted it on while still wet.
I seen that 😂😂😂 😊
Copper coating for gaskets can be found at any auto parts store, usually Permatex branded.
@@johnfox3845 Color me surprised they still sell that stuff given modern head gaskets don't need it and often manufacturers explicitly tell you not to use any sort of coating on the head gasket.
While it's use isn't as widespread as in the past, copper coat still has some utility. Among other things, it allows for reuse of many MLS head gaskets. Also, despite what the manufacturers say, it can be used to improve the sealing qualities of standard gaskets on engines that commonly suffer from gasket failure.
@@johnfox3845 It's kinda sad that, after 120 years or so of doin' this whole internal combustion thing, we still haven't figured out head gaskets...
Wow! Seems like you've got this model engine figured out and that this one should end up installed (well, an awesome backup for now!). Really great job!
Nice to have it back to life. Thanks for the follow up from the last video. Really learnt alot more. Take care and God bless ❤
Well for what it's worth I'd like to see you try and scratch up another engine from those trashed ones.
Always impressed what you can get to work!
Great Frankenstein rebuild. Hope you get do build another one out of the other two. That engine running without the exhaust on reminds me of my days riding on the dc6 as a load master at night. The fire from the exhaust stacks were pretty cool. 18 cylinders X 4 engines.
Well done, another engine salvaged. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, we will definitely watch another video on these!
Oh, and happy Father's day Mustie...
Some father's day flames. Thank you Mustie!
A Sunday morning well spent...great stuff.
With a handful of new parts, you'll have all the motors in running condition. Great job!
But he doesn't really need all of those engines now. Maybe someday. One does have to manage resources.
Great show brother. So when that other rod bent when ever you take out a lifter on a kohler engine with hydraulic lifters
you have to discharge the lifter by draining the oil out of it . This is so all the pressure doesn't go to the rod 😊 this is what the previous owner probably didn't do
We used silver paint way back in the day, when motors had shims between the cylinders and heads, before composition head gaskets came into play. Cool video, breathing life into old engines is a good feeling.
With content like this, no wonder I haven't watched or owned a TV for over 10 years.
Much better than anything on TV. Plus it's educational. A young guy could start a small engine repair shop by collecting old mowers etc and make a good engine for your time and experience.
You can use a Copper Spray Gasket for Head Gaskets and exhaust gaskets like Permatex 80697 Copper Spray-A-Gasket. I have never had luck with Kohler Engines single or dual. I have had 3 blow in a row and stopped buying equipment that had them. I have had B & S with no issues. My oldest is a 16HP Twin on my generator and is 27 years old. Living in FL it runs for a long time and only have to clean and service the fuel system as well as oil and filter.
