It is funny that people are making fun of Dr Singh saying they were expecting silence or a robot’s voice or Mrs Gandhi’s voice, while in actual reality, he was a college professor and likely had to speak more words than any one of us commenters (and to many an audience of nerdy college students, no less). If you check out his 1990s interview with Karan Thapar, he speaks at 5x the speed from his PM days. Unfortunately, he was a bit too old oratory-wise by the time he was PM. And people easily forget his and PVNR’s contribution to opening up India’s once-socialist economy to capitalist globalizing forces in the NEP of 1991. Not to suggest Dr Singh was a perfect PM, but if the quality of our electorate has anything to do with the quality of comments here, I do lament for our democracy, with such education levels.

But the first remark 'selected, not elected' is actually not borne out by facts. The general elections are held for _Lok Sabha constituencies_ (543 of them) and not for choosing the PM. Ours is not a Presidential system, unlike, say, the United States’. Therefore, in our Indian system, 543 LS seats are contested by various parties and independents and whichever party or coalition crosses the halfway mark of 272 seats gets a chance to make a government. In the 2004 LS elections, the Congress-led UPA(I) chose Dr Manmohan Singh to be the PM. It was perfectly reasonable and constitutional. We can criticize Dr Singh’s this decision or that decision, but the manner of his election is provably correct. The words 'selection, not election' may sound persuasive, maybe because of the rhyming, haha, but as I have explained, this is the nature of our democracy. ‘Prime ministerial candidates’ do exist in LS elections, but they are of little consequence if their party does not get a majority or does not form part of the coalition with 272+ seats. Hope this clarifies the issue! :)
