I think it was around 1974, when I was 7, that my family and I travelled from Ontario to this island. I mostly remember the bowling alley and having to walk around the edges of a room as the floor was rotting in the middle. This is so wonderful, seeing what has been restored and what is in progress! I wish my mum was 'on line', so I could show her this video. Thank you.
We visited Boldt Castle many years ago. The only room that was finished was the dining room. Since most of the castle was never finished to begin with, we weren't allowed to just wander around inside the building because we were told it was too dangerous. It was a guided tour. At the time, there was some question as to whether or not it would ever be finished because of the high cost. I am so happy to see that it has been restored and finished to what it was intended to be. So beautiful.
One of my most memorable vacations with my Mom and Dad. It was in the early 70s and it was as he left it. The amazing staircase was nothing but plywood stairs and two by four handrails. Congrats to all of the amazing trades people that brought life to Boldt Castle. Including more of the before pics would really show what work was done. Not a restoration but a miracle. Thanks for the video. It brought Mom and Dad back to me.
The castle was nearly finished when Louise died. Sadly , the place was looted of most of the interior finishes before it was taken over and restoration started.
I was there September 2019….and I must say, the work they’ve done is incredible. The stained glass dome in the main house was manufactured in Syracuse. It’s a wonderful place to photograph, and the boat ride over is relaxing. 😊❤❤
I visited this place int he early 1980's, at the time not much work had been completed, nice to see the progress, we should never lose these old buildings and our history.
Mr. Boldt certainly had an eye for beauty within creating this amazing mansion didn't he!! His wife was lovely looking as well...I feel sad for his loss of her!! Lastly, it's wonderful that it has been saved so we can all enjoy venturing around these magnificent grounds!!! Have a great week-end everyone!!
Heartbreaking, he was so devastated that he had to walk away. Such a love story, that when it was restored, my own heart breaks for how lovely life might have been if tragedy hadn’t interfered. Perfect architecture and cozy at the same time, this must be a real treat to have seen firsthand.
This is by far one of the best videos on Boldt Castle! Excellent!! Thank you for all the background history! And just a small note, that is not a swimming pool in the castle. That was for the water powered elevator from what a guide said.
Visited as a kid in the 1980’s and it was amazing and beautiful then, even in disrepair. So great to see so much progress on it. One of the best times with my parents.
Last time I was there was I the early 90s not much had been restored then none of the house , just the power house was done we were allowed to sign our names on the in one room so I did , it nice to see how far the renovations have come especially the stainless dome
@@josephengeln1653your music was just fine, thanks for sharing. Have been to the castle several times over the years, as a Canadian we always have to have our passports when entering the island. We always come by ferry from Kingston.
Regular subventions from the Thousand Island Bridge Authority help immeasurably to bring this treasure back to what it should have been. So much fine work has been done since we last visited the Castle some 23 years ago.
I can almost guarantee if it has been kept up all these years it wouldn't have not have needed so much work. If they had been renovating the place since 1977 I hope that it will be done soon and look as good as it did when it was first built. 😊👍❤️
Thank You for this wonderful illustrations GOD’S glory of life in the beauty and restoration of the castle right here in our own backyard here in our USA 🇺🇸 not across the Atlantic but here in our USA 🇺🇸 GOD bless those who work hard for years to restore the our American gilded age life and preservation in JESUS name amen 🙏🏾
He sucked up to the rich, feeding off of their crumbs and exploited his fellow immigrants to build this place. Ahhh! The very essence of the American Dream!!
Had a school trip here in early 60s and i remember thinking it was so sad it never was finished. We were told his wife died in a boating accident on the rocks below the castle on a trip to see how construction was going and that's why george never returned.
Just to put the pay in context, using silver as a base, 1 silver dollar back then could buy 100 dollars worth of goods in today's value. So, anyone who got paid 20 cents an hour, is like getting 20 dollars an hour now. The children would have made 2 dollars an hour in today's money. Luckily, we have child labor laws today.
I had a paper route when I was 11 yrs.old, babysat and worked every summer till I got my working papers. I started out with a strong work ethic, sadly something the younger generation doesn't have these days.
Good photos, though that piano is crazy making. What has it to do with story? Guess is flapper dancing music that has nothing to do with story. Would be lovely without loud intrusive bad music.
you know, the soundtrack is generally in the background and not screaming over the narrator and film. Lower it and choose something more elegant. I had to stop listening. So overspeaking the voice.
America has never ever been committed to paying the help and paying taxes. But they can and do blow a lot of money on vanity projects. A lot of money. Remember, we do without so much so these people can have so much.
Hi. Thanks for the comment. I am a bit of a history buff as well as traveler. I like putting things into their historical perspective. So it includes a bit of the history in which the castle was built as well as the castle
I can admire it but always bothered me that some spent this kind of money while so many had nothing. Im sure if I was a millionaire in those days I would've helped as many as possible
@@josephengeln1653 if I lower the volume I can't hear the narrator. Which is too bad because it's an otherwise excellent video and very interesting content/subject.

If you argue that this is a really good way to keep tradespeople in sync with their crafts, so that we do not lose their talents, then maybe that is the best reason to finish this mansion ??

Amazing how many, beautiful places have such tragic stories.
I visited there when it,was still just like he left it after his wife died. It was beautiful sitting unfinished.
Me, too. There many, many years ago.

I love to visit there. Been there several times. Can't only imagine what it would have looked like if completed. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for watching
Yes, you can!
I lived in Alexandria Bay when I was younger and got married at Boldt Castle 15 years ago. I love that area, the fishing is great.
Me ex and I visited here in 1975. Came across your video today. So happy the castle is being restored. Thank you so much for the video!
I’m so happy you enjoyed it. It’s my retirement hobby. The restoration is still ongoing

The Gilded Age produced some amazing buildings. I wish I could see them all.
Indeed. I just finished the Newport Mansions. Should publish tomorrow

Thank you very much. We loved it.
Thank you for this video. I had not been there in 20 years and I love seeing how much further they got.

Agreed. Loud music makes this difficult to hear.

Lovely styled people
Yes. They had that
VERY loud music!!
I visited the Castle in 1977. It didn't look anything like this, I guess 46 years of renovation makes a difference.

Can’t listen to the rest of it because of the offensive background noise… Otherwise, it would’ve been interesting

The content is interesting, but the audio is terrible. The piano music is louder than the narration. I couldn't listen.
I thought it an informative video. Until the loud music had its way with me and I dipped out and left.
It’s bit much

That’s not a swimming pool it’s a reservoir for the elevator.
What elevator? Why would an elevator need a reservoir? Yes. I have heard that many times. I’m happy you saw the video. Joe
Music too loud!!! I can’t hear you speak
Thank you Others have noted that too. Future videos will have lower music volume. Thanks again. Joe
And kids were paid 2cents per hour
Is this video about immigration, poverty and Mr. Bolts lifestyle, or is it about the castle?????

I’m sure they did!
Kestril.
really annoying sound track on a loop
Thank you for your comment. But I’m not sure why you say it’s looped. It’s not. But I agree that Music is a matter of taste.

It's in northern NY not upstate
If you are going to put out video know the facts
Thank you. I checked with the Castle. They said upstate. But thank you
In the state of New York some people refer to upstate New York as anything north of NYC. Anyway it is on the beautiful St. Lawrence.
Look up the definition of a castle. Although beautiful and amazing, it’s not, by definition, a castle. Words matter.
Yes. Words matter. The official title of the property is Boldt Castle.
