Black Oak Watch Box with Half-Blind Dovetails

- When a customer approached me about making a watch box as an anniversary gift for her husband, I asked myself, "What could I do to make this special?" After some back and forth, we came up with this design built out of white oak with black stain to really bring out the contrast in the half-blind dovetails.
There's little to no talking in this video, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the build.
Thank you for watching,
Nate

Nice work.
Hi Nate, Your work is beautiful and I am so glad RUclips recommended your video to me. What a talented craftsman you are, I am looking forward to learning a lot from your channel. Thank you for sharing your work, great filming and editing too. Oh, and I would be lying if I said I didn't have beard envy 😎 Cole
Hey Cole, I appreciate the compliments. Learning to build while filming and then editing has been a pretty steep learning curve, but I enjoy the challenge. If you want to see how long it takes just keep an eye on my beard. 😂
Great choice of wood and stain, and those joints look brilliant
Thanks you! 😁👍🏻
Love the box. Excellent work.
You've inspired me to finish my box project. You have me great ideas. Thank you for the video, I've subscribed ❤
You are so welcome! Thank you.

Dear Lord that is stunning.

Your video goes perfectly with my late night whisky sipping. Thank you for all your effort. Woodworking and editing.

Perfect job, thank you so much for great video
Looks great good job
I love the black color but it is very unforgiving. Nice work!

Love the dimensions of the box and the black.

Thank you, from the other side of the world. 😁👍🏻

How did you like that blackening method? Have you compared it to ebonizing?
I have yet to try ebonizing so I can’t compare them (yet). The Rubio pre color easy really is insanely easy to apply. With the deep grain of the white oak you have to pay attention so you don’t miss a spot. The black is also just that, intensely dark. I will say, make sure that you have fully finished working on the piece before you apply the finish. Too heavy of a touch will remove it, but once the top layer is applied (the oil plus C2) the black is basically permanent.
@@BurlandFeather I always wondered what wood I would choose to be a white for the black / white color scheme. Which would you use for a pure white colored wood?
Keep up the good work man. Maybe consider making a comparison video of those 2 blackening methods.
@@suntzu6122 Holly is by far the “whitest” natural wood. It’s used in inlays quite a bit. If you took any lighter wood like maple, beech, or ash and applied a bleaching process to it you might get similar results.
I’m by far not an expert in the finishing process. There’s really so much to it but I think you’re right. It would be fun to make a comparison video.
@@BurlandFeather I havent tried ebonizing yet. Just started looking into woodworking at all. It looks really fun. Its just intriguing technique for how simple (vinegar and 000 steel wool) the mixture is.
Not sure I get it. You sanded down the sides of the box but then it showed the pins with the Rubio Monaco black. Did you paint them on or did I miss something? Or did they simply darken with the clear Rubio monocot that you did the sides with? Love your video. I’m now a subscriber.
Thank you for the support! 😁👍🏻 I lost the footage from the painting of the pins. So sorry. After the black filler was applied and sanded I hand painted the pins with the little blue brush.
Fabulous, precise and classy. Well done. Does the gold leaf signify anything or is it just a nice touch to the box?
Thank you! My business name is “Burl and Feather” so I started adding these little brass feathers to all of my pieces. They’re fun to do and also add a little fun to it.
@@BurlandFeather Nice touch.
How come you don’t use push blocks for the planner? I just saw another woodworker on RUclips who lost his fingers. Granted he didn’t have a safety guard either but he also won’t be using his hands to push the board anymore …
After filming this video I did make a quick push block for the rear. I feel very uncomfortable with the plastic push blocks, so I stopped using them. I need to now get one for my front hand. Maybe something better quality.
