As ever; fascinating to watch the process, wonderful to see the finished product. This box is lovely- that birds-eye maple is so beautiful. Thanks for another very watchable (oops, sorry!) video!
Thanks so much 😀 I use two shooting boards, the mitre one is hand made (no video I’m afraid) which is a variation on Paul Sellers design - ruclips.net/video/-Ypbvcxb-8M/видео.htmlsi=ZyGXn-gWuX3FTBQz The other is made by Veritas - www.veritastools.ca/en-ca/shop/tools/jigs-guides-and-fixtures/110737-veritas-shooting-board I hope that helps 👍
I would recommend Paul Sellers & Rob Cosman as great channels. I just searched online for plans and found this - www.finewoodworking.com/project-guides/shop-projects/a-shooting-board-for-case-miters hope these help 👍
great job loved the maple and teak combo. I uses to work in the boating industry and did a lot of work with both. Some of the guys that worked in my shop had reaction to the teak dust was wondering if you ever did
Lovely box. I like the maple and teak contrasts. You asked if you use too many clamps. For a small project like that, I would say you had clamp overkill. For the mitre joints and teak trim, the tape alone would be sufficient. There's also the risk of too much or uneven clamping force causing racking, or damaging the timber. While PVA needs clamping force, it doesn't need too much.
Finally! Someone who glues end grain something near the way Titebond says to do it. So many complain about low, end grain, glue strength and yet they don't apply an initial weakened coat of glue the way the manufacturer recommends. Thank you
I was thinking the same thing with those distinctive brass hinges. I love the handle that was used, but would be interesting to connect the front and the back viably with matching brass shapes.
Very nice! I liked how the finish made the “birdseye” pop out. BTW, wht was the finish you used on the inserts? I could not read wht was on the white container. Thanks!
thanks, I’m pleased you liked it 😀 The finish was Renaissance Wax www.amazon.co.uk/Renaissance-Micro-Crystalline-Wax-200/dp/B0015F2GEM/ref=sr_1_2?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.daJ2F2WEpnomuR_z_tK8eR7jW_P2gnGF2WmcIeJYtGSc6RvOaxlP648D45VDqblYGsqYigzMWPxlqRvuLOowhArJdgwhUD3MYHZrvyQidRqNR1Ef2o34lL1CqFglpNdtzIFGExyxYNTjh9-RboFzGW_-WWLbmbT3o4iO9a8QCiE1aWm7EuPAbQzKmaoOObVaWVqqkjpbC9cq7XyMtPbMgA4mLhe-1KDbWcFDte5dQeLcdmdvX3jIM0Izo4r_a-01sOS7MvRXCCRSdSWc8v6Hd8ZFW0h04WMbpddtggWoR-4.k3tWQK1KUonkKryYNqQAUgRoHK-_UHq-I6laACqaI9k&dib_tag=se&keywords=renaissance+wax&qid=1717405604&sr=8-2
Great work lo e your attention to detail I'm an old bench joiner don't do much now few restoration jobs ware did you get the big digital calipers from they look useful
thanks, I’m glad you liked it 😀 I’m not sure where I got them from ( I’ve had them a long time!) but just searched online and found loads and not very expensive 👍
thanks glad you liked it 😀 I had some Perspex left over from a previous project and as it was for me I thought I’d use it up. If it was for a customer I would’ve used glass 👍
thanks glad you liked it 😀 Didn’t feel it necessary to remove the lid to finish, the inside had already been pre-finished so was no issue applying to the outside with it still together 👍
Shellac obviously has a few drawbacks (not stain resistant and not durable) but for a piece like this, it’s hard to beat. I’m not sure about the benefits of microcrystalline wax over a good quality paste wax?
I have a question, if you please. I am in awe of your planer set up. Did you build it or buy it? As you can imagine, I would love to have something like this... Love your videos! (My favorite finish is shellac. It's my go-to product for many reasons. I sometimes even 'tint it.' 😉
thanks I’m so pleased you like my videos 😀 The main shooting board & plane are both by Veritas, the 45° one I was using for all the miters is something I made myself 👍
Brilliant detailed OCD artwork as usual Gary, well done! I’m fanatical about the smallest details of the pieces I make. I’ve been known to remake a project because “that one thing” wasn’t right. I’ve been scribbling some watch case ideas myself. What are the dimensions for each watch space you used in your piece if you don’t mind my asking? Thanks
Thanks for that, mine were similar based on the pillows I too found on Amazon. I look forward to your next project. I’m mid way through making a box based on the one you made from cycamore and zebrano. Maple & wenge for mine. Pardon if you’re annoyed I’m making a similar one.
Badass!! True craftsmanship!
thank you so much 👍
nice workmanship /one of a kind Peter from New York
thanks Peter 👍
As ever; fascinating to watch the process, wonderful to see the finished product. This box is lovely- that birds-eye maple is so beautiful. Thanks for another very watchable (oops, sorry!) video!
Thanks, really pleased you enjoyed it! 😀 And great pun, love it 👍
Impressive workmanship and a wonderful design. As for your adjustable shooting board, do you have a video of the making of it?
Thanks so much 😀

Fiddling indeed but when every joint is tight and square it’s a beauty to behold.
Especially with finish.
thanks so much 😀
Very nice design. I enjoyed the video. I was worried for you with the purple meths, but it looked great in the end.
Thank you 😀 I know, I checked a few different websites but wasn’t convinced until I tried it!
Loved it. I am envious because my treasures need a special box. Especially fine chains
thanks, so pleased you liked it 😀
Are there plans somewhere for the planer jigs? Also videos about hand plane use that you would recommend?
I would recommend Paul Sellers & Rob Cosman as great channels. I just searched online for plans and found this - www.finewoodworking.com/project-guides/shop-projects/a-shooting-board-for-case-miters
hope these help 👍
Love bird’s eye maple. Really nice work to mate
Thank you! Cheers! 👍
Amazing job, thank you so much for great video
Glad you enjoyed it! 😀
Beautiful work. I've been learning a lot from your videos.
Thank you very much! 😀
Beautiful ! I just would have treated myself to a real piece of glass for such a nice project. New sub.
Thanks and welcome 👍
great job loved the maple and teak combo. I uses to work in the boating industry and did a lot of work with both. Some of the guys that worked in my shop had reaction to the teak dust was wondering if you ever did
thanks, they do go well together 👍 No never had a reaction to teak, I didn’t realise it was such an irritant, I must be a lucky one!
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO
thanks for watching 😀
Это то, что называется искусством. Браво. Восхищаюсь вашим владением ручным инструментом.
thanks 👍
Excellent work as usual!
Thanks again! 😀
I'm jealous of your shooting board and plane - what exactly IS that type of plane called? Great work. Love your videos.
thanks I’m pleased you’re enjoying my videos 😀 It’s just called a shooting plane, that one is by Veritas 👍
great video. Did you make your shooting board?
thanks 😀 I did make the mitre shooting board, but the standard shooting board is from Veritas 👍
Lovely box. I like the maple and teak contrasts.
You asked if you use too many clamps. For a small project like that, I would say you had clamp overkill. For the mitre joints and teak trim, the tape alone would be sufficient. thanks really pleased you liked it 😀
Great point about the clamps, more is not always better 👍
Nice work man, but the mini-plane snafu at 17:26 made me cry out so loudly the wife came to see if I was okay
Thanks glad you liked it 😀 Luckily it was ok and sanded out 👍
Finally! Someone who glues end grain something near the way Titebond says to do it. So many complain about low, end grain, glue strength and yet they don't apply an initial weakened coat of glue the way the manufacturer recommends. Thank you
thanks, it’s something I’ve always done 👍
nice work
Thank you! 👍
I would make handle in form of block of brass to mirror the hinges on the other side. Box looks gorgeous. Thank you for sharing the process.
Thanks I’m pleased you enjoyed it 😀Great idea with the handle 👍
I was thinking the same thing with those distinctive brass hinges. I love the handle that was used, but would be interesting to connect the front and the back viably with matching brass shapes.
Lovely box, where did you get the hinges?
thanks 😀 The hinges are by Horton Brasses, I got them from Niche Locks here in the UK 👍
Looks amazing great job
Thank you so much 😀

Why did you use Perspex rather than glass? Great attention to detail and a wonderful finished piece.
thanks glad you liked it 😀
I had some Perspex left over from a previous project and as it was for me I thought I’d use it up. If it was for a customer I would’ve used glass 👍
Great video! just curious why dont you take the hinge off when you apply finish? Probably not thing wrong with it tho!
thanks glad you liked it 😀 Didn’t feel it necessary to remove the lid to finish, the inside had already been pre-finished so was no issue applying to the outside with it still together 👍
Shellac obviously has a few drawbacks (not stain resistant and not durable) but for a piece like this, it’s hard to beat. I’m not sure about the benefits of microcrystalline wax over a good quality paste wax?
thanks 😀 No, not sure of any benefits just what I have to hand and like 👍

@@GM_Design Thank you - that is amazing! You have such skill!
Thanks
thanks 😀 Yeah I know that feeling!
The spaces were 50mm (2”) x 80mm (3”) to fit the “pillows/cusions” I found online 👍
Thanks for that, mine were similar based on the pillows I too found on Amazon. I look forward to your next project. I’m mid way through making a box based on the one you made from cycamore and zebrano. Maple & wenge for mine. Pardon if you’re annoyed I’m making a similar one.
That’s great, maple & wenge will look amazing together 👍
