This system is so cool it are sick! As a Final Fantasy fan I really appreciate all these fan creations that allow creativity. Some cool expansions could be based on like Advent Children and Crisis core
Dude, this is some kind of rad... I've definitely slipped on my Final Fantasy knowledge to an extent, so... so far I have... Cetra (23) for race, Warrior (48) for job, Magic (8) for starting materia, and Research (83) for background. Interesting so far. I'm quite a bit more of a Dragon Quest kind of guy on the JRPG spectrum, and some of those games also run jobs for characters as well.
Lemme try Cetra (2) Thief (35) Magic (20) Isakei (87) So I am a Not very Cetra-ish Cetra, who is not a great thief, who "techincally" has magic (ice 1 materia), who is DEFINITELY not from around here. I know they are not strict guidelines but the idea of a character who rolled fairly low on everything but their best aspect is how "out of this world they are" is funny. I imagine a particularly unskilled Cetra from the past who got sent to the future and tries to steal stuff to get by. Zidane I am not.
"Item Based" Why "Item Based"? Why not "Gunner" or "Red Mage" or nothing at all since a character place in the party seems to be based purely on their stats and materia making job classes pointless. (Besides the only Item Based character in FF proper that I can think of is Edward's secretary in FFIVTAY and she's unanimously agreed to be useless)
After watching the stream, I felt utterly compelled to try rolling up a character with a box of dice and see how stupid I can make it. My rollup: Nanaki (97) Black Mage (65) Support (87) Research (78) Conclusion: I am a good doggo that performs research on ancient ruins using a bag full of varied black magic materia and even more varied support materia to bolster its effects to absurd degrees. The ruins often don't stay in tact for much longer than a day after my arrival. I am therefore initially not liked for my casually destructive presence, but am such a good tracker that I am sent of to look for new ruins before I have a chance to actually explore them. As an "unpredictable coincidence," I am often sent into the line of fire of various monsters that also tend not to last very long when being discovered from afar by an ace tracker armed like a magic howitzer. I was told while formulating this character that I basically invented a Nanaki Deathwatch... I regret nothing.

@@TheLoadingCrew Let's see...well thanks to the Isekai part the character would be from our world so I can imagine a passive ability for +1 knowledge rolls for things that involve FF7, he would be shock to find out that he turn from human to a Cetra when he cast healing magic without a Materia, and I think it was funny coming up that he wields a gun and uses Materia for different effective shots like putting the fire Materia in for fire base shots(And to balance that idea so I don't just spam it is that it cost MP to do so.). And as for the advance Materia.....well I couldn't come up with what it be on that, But since it's something that could advance the story I figured that be something to work with the DM about it. I have 2 questions involving Awakened: 1) Does the Mythical Monster (for 81-99) have to be one from FF7 or no? (I was in the FF7 D&D stream but I only got the idea for a Gimmie-Cat (From FFIX) Thief recently with the rolls I got) Which was: Awakened (81), Thief (54), Advanced Materia (87) and Research background (97) 2) Do you keep any and all skills, resistances, etc or will some abilities/features be nerfed/locked behind level up? (Example will a Malboro player have Bad Breath from the get go or no?)
I tried making a FF7 DnD system years ago. Never got very far, basically ended up just using it as an OC Engine. Had a thief with a missing eye who got super drunk, replaced his eye with a Scan Materia, then dunked his had into a Mako Pool. Ended being an info broker that was planned to be the 'mission board' of the setting. His gimmick was that he had to be very careful about how Mastered the Materia was, you don't want a 2nd Materia popping into existence inside your skull after all.
So, let's see what character I roll on this system. Race: Alien, Lvl: 92, Angel of the Calamity Job: Thief, Lvl: 55 Materia: Support, Lvl: 21 Background: Experiment, Lvl: 63 Okay, so I'm a One Winged Angel. Neat, but I'm barely a One Winged Angel, crap. Which means I'm dying. Also not good. A decent Thief with low Support Materia, I'm thinking HP Absorb, just trying to heal myself by stealing others life? I'm not really sure how the decent Experiment Background would play into this though. Any ideas?
He came from basically our world where he was a teenager with a single dad, one day he saw a little girl on the street about to be hit by a truck, he pushed her out of the way but at the last second realised he just fell for the most common Isekai trope known to man and he dies But that isn't the end of it SOMEHOW his life energy travels to the midgar's life stream instead of his own one and is yeeted into a cat plush body in an alleyway next to a zweihander picking the Sword up he travels midgar and eventually meets a kind lady (that uncannily resembles his mother) that takes him in with her son Rig Storm, he sees them as family and grows a close connection to them, eventually he also adopts the last name Storm, years go by and he learns how to dj from Rig and use magic from what he considers his mom, soon he decides to breaks off on his own making music for the less fortunate people at the bottom of midgar still welding his zweihander but on a train ride while he was at the top buying equipment for his music the train gets ambushed by shinra soldiers and for some unknown reason. Start murine everybody on the train and he's forced to fight And that would be were his story would truly start if I ever host a dnd session in a final fantasy 7 setting.

I think the "FF7 and FF10 are sorta related" thing is because a character introduced in FFX-2 is a genius kid named "Shinra", resulting in some fans making the logic leap of "As his name is Shinra, he's therefore the person who founds the Shinra Corporation in FF7."

Very cool reading through your primer for a D20 system based on FF7 it's cool as a one-shot, awesome! if I was making a campaign of this, I'd probably look at spinning off summon Materia as the games unique/rare Magic items, have them give a bonus and negative effect for having it 'equipped' or 'bound' and make it something for players to go hunt for or a side story reward kind of thing. Neat, It would be fun to you mess around with other concepts as a Tabletop System, I'm one of those people that like thinking about how this stuff would work, For example if I was the do something with a Sonic the Hedgehog setting. I imagine Rings as HP and Rings being a type of life energy you can see and that can be sucked out of the air when touched and the energy to stored in the body, it works like Aura does in RWBY that stops damage from stuff like bullets or slammed into a wall but more unstable since a bullet hit in a Sonic game would make 50 Rings fly but all you need is one Ring/HP can null damage. Taking a hit with no Ring energy is probably instant death or at least a injury.
I rolled 2 characters that were polar opposites Cetra(86) Black mage(68) Independent(68) Experiment(66) and Human(20) Warrior(7) Magic(25) Industry(70) so basically a edgy experiment with inherent magic and no need for magic materia so they use independent materia, and a Red Mage with no real reason to go out and fight since they would do better at their job. still great ideas and I love ff7 so I will probably use it a bit.
