- Today we have a build for Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy 7 in Dungeons & Dragons to celebrate the Final Fantasy VII remake. If you want to pin people down and punch the heck out of them, this build takes full advantage of grappling abilities in D&D 5e!

Unfortunately, that's almost impossible, he uses the standard point array, but not everyone does that. So he just makes suggestions about score improvements
For me they're relatively easy to track in my head but I will agree that not seeing them somewhere other than the start kinda bugs me a little.
No deal breaker but it would be nice, no doubt.
I would be happy with a graphic at the end that posts the total build and its info so it would be easier if you wanted to use it to just screenshot the last 30 seconds of the video and see, "Ok, this build has such and such race, stats xyz at 20, took this many levels in this class, this many in another, took these feats (and maybe) these specific spells for the flavor."

When there is a character like Tifa that has a lot of customization from their games, I would say just foucs on thier signature abilties that they have exclusive to them. Which you did here. So good on you.

@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 Good call on avoiding Rune Knight as well (even though you mentioned it). Runes go on weapons and armour, which Tifa doesn't go for, and would conflict with Unarmoured defence/movement from monk anyway.
Doesn't a rune allow you to inscribe rune's on your party's stuff not just yours?

I think playing as a Red Mage could also be fun. They may use a sword, but that's not their only tool, they are equally skilled in melee combat (with their rapier), "White" magic, and "Black" magic. They're the ultimate "Jack of All Trades, Master of None". They may not be as capable in each of the three facets as a more specialized character, but they make up for that with their incredible versatility.
There's even a fan-made "Companion Guide" that adds all of the Races & Jobs from FF XIV and converts them into a D&D 5e format. Everything from Samurai, to Ninja, to Red Mage, to Dark Knight is covered.
I'd actually recommend the Tavern Brawler feat instead of the tough feat. Sure, extra health is nice but you're a glass cannon in the first place, act like it. You can grapple with a bonus action after an unarmed strikes (or improvised weapon attack) and it also fits in character, Tifa is a bartender after all.
I'd argue Tavern Brawler should be her first feat, even if just for the literal-ism of the name.

I don't.. see any way to do that, there's no guns or constant flight and whatnot really. I guess it's magic so stuff like guiding bolt could be reflavored for it maybe.

Fallen Aasimar Divine Soul Sorlock. Your Patron is God himself, and he's going to get your acknowledgement and worship one way or ANOTHER. As for guns, their guns while using ammo, definitely run on magic, so I'd rule that the gun is your spell focus. Or throw a few levels of Artificer in there. Your choice really.

Guns exist in DMG, same with Explosives. Fly is a spell she could use
Nice build, I like to think that the progression is her fighter levels are more of a brawler since she lives in the slums, but then became more refined over time, leading to more martial arts prowess. Its a shame that the extra attacks dont stack, or that there is an alternative because it really does limit the build potential. I like to home rule it that while it doesnt stack, you can take an a feat instead, though its subject to the DMs approval.
I like the idea but it could power creep. For 10 levels you would then have 3 ASIs instead of 3 for level 20. I would go further but at that point you might be shooting yourself in the foot by sacrificing the higher lv abilities.

Lilo would just be a low level human though. Aside from being imaginative and courageous, she doesn't have any real notable abilities.
Lilo is definitely a bard. Teaches Stitch about music and dancing, mostly fights with words, so charismatic

So lets dissect Grappler for a second. The first feature, advantage on a creature you're grappling, is pretty decent, but the secondary use, the pinning technique, is pretty garbage. You're giving up your advantage on attacking the target to restrain yourself, making yourself unable to move the enemy around, giving everyone except the person you grappling advantage to hit you, and giving yourself disadvantage on dexterity saves. Yes your target suffers all these ill effects too, but the simple fact of the matter is, since you'd have advantage to hit them if they were restrained anyway, the disadvantage you have on your own attack rolls makes that point moot, as well as getting rid of your advantage via grappling.
The simple fact of the matter is, this feat actually makes you worse at grappling. You can get most of the same effects with none of the negatives by using your first attack to do a shove, knocking your enemy prone, then using your second attack to grapple the prone target, something you can do without going prone yourself. In this scenario, you and all your allies have advantage on your attack rolls, the enemy cannot stand without breaking the grapple first due to their speed being zero, and the target has disadvantage on all their attack rolls. The only thing you're losing out on is making them have disadvantage on dex saves, and odds are that's not gonna matter when you and your buddies can pull a Narancia, Mista, Abbacio triple special on them while you hold them by their ankle.
Long analysis short. Never take Grappler. Any character with extra attack can do everything the feat allows but better already.

Already figured out Diavolo, he's pretty much a Changeling using the faceless background to use Doppio properly.
As far as class levels go, he's a multi-class between Astral Self Monk(17), Divine Soul Sorcerer(1), and either Divination or Chronurgy Wizard(2). This enables the ability for Diavolo to kill someone in a single turn, whilst preventing others from interrupting. It just works!

I would also consider Barbarian instead of Fighter. "Unbridled Strength" could work well as the Barbarian's Rage, and you'd also get advantage on grapples. Though unfortunately none of the subclasses would be easy to reflavor if it goes beyond a dip, except for maybe the "Animal totems" actually being materia.
Unfortunately, you don't gain Advantage on grapples while raging because they count as Attack Rolls rather than Strength checks.

Also, a Yuna build probably wouldn't be all that different from Yugi's build.
Honestly the only FF-X characters that aren't just Stock Mono-Class or quick level dippers are Wakka and MAYBE Khimari. There's not much stuff for copying Monster-unique attacks so there'd have to be a lot of abstraction for Lancet/Ronso Rage shenanigans. Throwing a ball is moderately unique and not very well articulated since throwing weapons in D&D are infamously strange.

Is going the grappler route still worth it in your opinion now that Tasha has come out and the official version of Unarmed Fighting has had the bonus damage to grappled foes severely nerfed?
It’s really weird that fighters only get extra attack at level 5. Every other class that gets extra attack gets extra attack and something else. Barbarians get fast movement, Paladins and Rangers get 2nd level spells, and monks get Stunning strike.

She's fast and strong but she has poor magic as a drawback.

I made a Tifa build more or less inspired by this video but I went with Battlemaster for the fighter, just to let her fighting be more dynamic really.

He's just a little to broken IMO for a build that covers ALL of what he can do... Stat points... Str:8 Dex: 14 Con: 13 Int: 15 Wis: 12 Cha: 10. Yeah is is super strong in the books, but he uses dex weapons, so Str is the dump here. Best bet for classes is 3 levels of rogue and take Assassin (need that Stealth expertise.). Then 17 levels in Necromancy Wizard and focus all your spells slots on raising an army. The class feature Undead thralls (at 6th lvl) helps a lot in this as their hit points are increased by 1 per Wizard lvl, and adds your proficiency bonus to damage rolls. You also get Command Undead at 14th lvl to try and take over existing undead. Animate Dead (3rd) is your first (which you automatically get at Wizard lvl 6 from the Undead Thralls feature), and later, Danse Macabre (5th), and Create Undead (6th). (The latter two don't get the extra undead from the class feature by using Animate Dead, but still gain the stat boosts. Danse Macabre also gives further to hit/damage from your Spellcasting modifier). Using a 9th level slot, with the boost from Undead Thralls class feature, you can summon 14 creatures in one Animate Dead or 13 slightly better undead from Danse Macabre. Also Create Undead (6th) can get you some Wights, that while they cost some higher level spell slots to do so (2 Wights at 8th and 3 at 9th), Wights can create more undead on their own, but depending on how your DM handles it, you might not get to keep them for other battles (like how Jin-Woo can only keep a certain amount of summons). So I'd use Create Undead (lvls 8-9) as his Generals (Mostly for Igris or Iron... But your DM might let you use other creatures for the others), while Danse Macabre (lvls 5-7) are more his Lieutenants and Animate Dead (lvls 3-4) are more for his regular soldiers. The only big problem is you need bones/corpses to make these summons... So you better be able to carry all the required bones (skeletons/attacking) or corpses ( Zombies/meat shields). As for race...? Variant Human or course! Raised Int and Dex and I took the feat "Dragon Fear", and got +1 constitution with it. It also allows you to "Radiate Menace" and make creatures scared of you. Something we know he does a LOT. Oh yeah, and the mage hand cantrip. Not as efficient as his "Dominators Touch" but still handy in retrieving thrown daggers. In the end I maxed Int and got Dex to 19. This build does not end up with high HP (DND beyond average is 126 with final Con of 14) and your AC is not great. But that is why you have an army. If you don't want to use all your spell slots for just summoning, you can add flavor spells like Shield (or Mage armor) Fireball and Reduce/Enlarge (Tusk uses these 3 regularly). And finally, your 1-2 lvl spells should be helpful for your Assassin abilities ( since they cannot raise any undead). Like Invisibility. Maybe Blur? Or misty Step. All of the above? All the better to move silently.

Surprised this didn't go for brute fighter. Would have gotten the second fighting style, a boost to saves and additional damage on each of your many strikes (which sounds better than the increased crit chance imo. Didn't think I'd say that any time soon :/). You'd miss out on some of the jumping distance I suppose.

Grappler feat is unnecessary (and is basically a trap option) as Grapple + Shove to Prone is objectively better in 95% of situations.
Edit: A better choice would be Prodigy, to get double Proficiency in Athletics.

Build predictions. Monk sounds like the right option, but I think you might also be able to make a great Tifa using Fighter and the Unarmed Fighting fighting style feature from the class variant UA.
Turns out that's exactly the route you took. Seems to make the most sense when building a Stronk after all.
Now, since we did a monk once after such a long time... How about we do another? I suggest Ark from Terranigma. Yes, an incredibly old game and not know all too well... But it's a real gem. I suggest everyone tries.

Rune Knight still works quite well as a fighter archetype when you consider the runes carved into your equipment to be like inserted Materia. (Even though you said you were avoiding those but... eh.)
Which is how I'll be doing this build in the future, although with a different name and personality. I've always been a fan of Tifa's ability to kick ass and this is a great representation of it :D

Little hard to tell because he doesn't cast conventional magic so not sure how much Bard

I originally would have chosen Battlemaster but then I realized most maneuvers specify hitting with a weapon attack which Tifa doesn't use so Champion probably is the best bet.

Problem is that we only have one single episode to base it on. And he shows almost none of his real powers there.
For some reason it’d never occurred to me to combine the Fighter’s unarmed style with the Monk’s unarmed fighting. I like how it works out. I also love that you’re doing more Final Fantasy builds. Can’t wait for Squall to get his turn and here’s hoping Yuna pulls ahead in the poll, they’re my favorite characters in the franchise (and Squall is my favorite video game character in general).
Build would work for an Ikki Tousen build too :) but from what I've read so far at least half the cast are some Gestalt dual classes
I love how a small change can affect a build.
If you look at it the Jotaro and the Tifa build are shockingly similar.
Yet Jotaro is better at taking DMG (rage + defensive fighting style), while Tifa is better at dishing it out (unarmored fighting + grappler).
Please tell me Kite-Man is next.

I would have gone 4 levels Monk, Way of the Drunken Master. Being able to easily move away from a target after you pummel them seems more thematic than most of what you get in early levels of Open hand that you cant get with battle master. 4 levels Totem warrior Barbarian, taking elk for more movement or tiger for higher jumps. Last but not least, the rest in Fighter Battle master. Basically all the maneuvers work with Unarmed attacks, I think Brace and Quick toss are the only ones that Don't, and you can use them to easily recreate most of her none magic Materia abilities with them. If the magic attacks can't be fix with items go 6 monk and 2 barbarian.

never forget that you get advantage on prone enemies so the combo stunning strike , flurry of blows (shove prone *not limited tot size) then go back to hitting your extra attacks.
While you're on the final fantasy topic, Freya Crescent from 9 would be a fun one. I don't think I've met someone yet who didn't like the character. There's a divide on whether you think she was handled properly or if they didn't develop her enough, but she was a pretty rat girl with an old school dragoon look and insane physical combat power. I recall one of my favorite moves with her being the jump. When you got trance she'd jump into the air, spend time raining down spears from above until trance ran out, then slam down with a massive ass stab. Leg power like you wouldn't believe, insanely accurate throwing spears, a lance that could topple a nation, she was an ideal physical fighter to me.
This is making me REALLY want to see Tsuna from Katekyo Hitman Reborn be made here, idk how many people want this but who knows, maybe someday! 😂

To add insult to injury...or just injury to injury...Cody of Taking 20 made homebrew changes to a few feats including! Grappler and gave it all the standard stuff but also they get:
GRAPPLER: You gain the following Grapple Maneuvers;
-Shoulder Spear Move at least 10 feet before your grapple you may use a bonus action
to attempt to knock an opponent prone as part of your grapple. If they exceed your opponent's contested check by 5 or more, they gain the restrained condition for one round. Your character is prone;
-Head Smash You may use an attack action to try and stun a creature grappled by you.
To do so, make another grapple. If you succeed the target must make a CON save of 8+Prof+Str or be stunned for one round;
-Wrist Grab If you succeed on a grapple check, your target may not make attacks with their arm(s), including weapons they may be holding or natural attacks (IE Claws). You may
attempt to grab one or two forelimbs when you use this feature. If your attempting to restrain two forelimbs, the target has advantage on their contested check;

Funny story. . . applying this build to a Dhampir character (who was originally supposed to be a rogue type, but that's another story), whenever I rolled Hit Dice for Monk levels of HP, I almost always got a 7.
This is super brilliant! I wanted to something like this but had dumped the suplex and meteor drive because I fear having less a.c. and hp but with lots of fighter levels the hp is fair.

I get it, because the FFVII remake is now available for purchase, just not play outside the demo, you want to do a lot Final Fantasy builds. That all said, maybe step away from the Final Fantasy stuff for a while and focus on a different series moving forward. I've said before and I'll say it again, it will be interesting to see what sort of builds the main cast of Outlaw Star gets, although due to his lack of being an adult chances are Jim will probably not be able to make past level 12 for his capstone, something to think about when it comes to a few child protagonists.
That all said, I still want to see Rimuru, Gobata, and few other characters from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime get their own builds here, there's a resource for making characters that are also Slimes now, I've mentioned it in a few video comments (and left a link to where you can get the resource in at least one of them). I suggest starting with Rimuru first, mostly because he's the main protagonist of the series and we need more characters with access to really good bois, I say it that way because Rimuru has access to a very special wolf that has an exceedingly high level of loyalty and commitment to him. Gobbata might be a bit easier to build with resources readily available, being a hobgoblin and all, and I have yet to find any resources, official and third party, where you can play as ogres, even those with sizes closer to humans, so pretty much all the kijin are out of reach for building just yet, as much as those of us who are fans of the series would love to see you build some of the kijin. Also, I think you would have trouble building some of the demon lords, like Milim due to the lack of info regarding the races they were before ascending to being a demon lord.
We need to get this guy to do a Steven Universe character, like Garnet or Lapis.
