Put the compost in the greenhouse. Rotting compost produces heat which helps heat the greenhouse. The warmer environment in the greenhouse helps the compost rot. Symbiotic relationship. Mixing chicken manure with the leaves makes a perfect mix.
Martin, leave the compost pile out side. If you put the compost pile in the greenhouse during the summer , it will get to hot and catch fire! The temp is way to hot! During the summer months, turn the compost pile every two weeks. Also, any scrap food from the house throw on the compost pile. Potatoe peelings, veggie peelings, used coffie grounds, old tomatoes etc.😊
My husband cuts peppers in slices, then puts them on parchment in freezer. Next day, takes the now frozen peppers and bags them up. We plant a lot of peppers, between bell and jalapeño, because he likes them in his morning potatoes with onions. It’s a great way to always have them. They are easy to chop while frozen and because they were frozen as slices, they don’t stick together.
The reason a fall protection device is hooked in the back is because your spine will naturally flex forward. If you would fall with the restraint belt on your front, it is very likely you would break your back, since it would bend your spine in a way you can't normally flex. The proper use of the belt you are wearing is as a restraint to stop you from walking near an edge, not for supporting you on a slope.
We made a compost pile like yours do anything different we made it the width of our tractor bucket, it works great we can bring our tractor over and turn the compost pile when it gets big.
It looked like silicone. You understand my concern. Thanks for the reply. It's good to know you read the responses. Been following you and the family for about 2 years.
Very nice. Glad you are safe from climbing up and down on the roof. I don’t know anything about the compost pile other than you throw all your food scraps in there as well. Stay safe. 🙏
Have you thought of getting one of those snow breaks (looks like a roof wedge) for the chimney? Also for great compost you ideally need to build it in 1/3rds eg 1/3 green matter like grass and leaves, 1/3 brown matter like wood chips/sawdust & 1/3 manure eg chicken/sheep/horse etc, and you ideally need to turn it once a week in the summer and once a month in the winter. That’s how my dad taught me going back 40+ years and his dad taught my dad the same technique when he was a lad. It has produced fantastic results my whole life.
Yeah the roof on my tiny house finally seems to be sealed up after one-or-another leak at random spots - because friggin’ Idaho has at least 8 seasons ranging from 100ºF to -20ºF. Friggin’ Idaho!!
8:10 do the cats eat what they catch? Our cat eats about 95% of the things she catches even when the food bowl is full right next to her. She even caught two flying squirrels recently and ate both of them, nothing left. Even the tail which was totally gross to see, lol.
For future reference if you're working on those metal roofs you can if you have a decent tool rental near you a roofer's chicken ladder does exactly what you're trying to do it has an arm that reaches over to the other side and it's a long skinny ladder just for exactly what you're doing otherwise you could have reassembled your extension ladder just the way you did and just throwing some towels underneath it scratching the roof up and just use the whole thing just tie it together so The lower half can't slide back out
What you can try the next time is buy some 2 liter cheap soda and spray it on the roof. When dried you have a non slick surface that will easily clean off when done or through winter on its own
Just extend the ladder out to what you need and then take lengths of electrical wire and rap around the rungs in several places. Keep the ladder stand off setup.
When you flipped the panel on the gable so you can't see the seam from the ground you actually made it so water and melting snow flowing down the roof will be directed behind the metal...not good! Also, you shouldn't use the fall protection lanyard for support, you could suddenly end up with a much longer line if it releases...be safe!
Composting - put the forks on your tractor, drive the tractor over to your composting site, then get out of your tractor and mark off the size that you will need to “work” the pile. Next imagine scooping out your some product. How wide is your front bucket - readjust the size of your frame work again. Personally, I prefer a 10x10 area.
I would get a potable 4th wall to keep everything together and then take that wall out of the way so you can turn over your compost pile. I can see winds blowing the leaves everywhere. Just saying.
A good compost will generate heat Marty. So, putting the compost outside was the best idea. You can check the amount of heat it generates with an electronic temp gauge, which tells you if your composting. Putting the animals dung and mixing it all up every once in a while is also a good thing, just saying!

A trick for working on tin roof. Pour soda drink like sprite or whichever on it and it dries sticky then rinse with water hose when done.

Sorry for your loss. I’m glad our videos can be of some comfort.
M&J, you both look like you know what you are doing. Thank you for sharing your work(craftsmanship).
Compost needs something green and damp, fresh cut grass and some inoculate like a few shovels of really good soil mixed in.
You made me so nervous working up on that high roof. Glad it is done. Well done.
Thanks 👍

The whole time Marty was trying to get to the ladder at the chimney I was thinking "Marty just get the harness" lol

I’m loving that super-productive greenhouse garden!
You should get a "snow deflector" to put just above the smokestack to prevent snolw buildup which may damage the stack.
Yes Marty you got this, nice job and glad you didn't have any issues on the roof. Plenty of good comments on compost..

I thought you should have overlapped the corrugations the opposite way to prevent water from entering.
Love your show!
The good fall protection has a ring on the front and the back so it makes it a lot easier to do it that way

No need for a Gym at the Johnsons. Climbing, balancing are all part of a good work out. Be safe and God bless.
You gonna give me another heartattack!!
Gran trabajo.
its about time for a food dehydrator for the year end harvests
Keep the compost moist. not wet. just enough moisture to help it decompose.

Why not screened porch for summer bugs?
We don’t have that many bugs.
You might want to install a snow splitter above the chimney. It will keep the snow load from doing damage to the chimney.
That is a good idea.
Love your videos! The camera on the hat totally made me nauseous though I had to skip through those parts

Make refrigerator pickles with your excess peppers. Easy to do and there are lots of videos on RUclips on how to make them.
Well, this was scary 😨.

Genius!
Marty, I don't think you want a compose pile inside the green house because of the methane gas it puts off.
You can put peppers in the freezer .
Just extend the ladder out to what you need and then take lengths of electrical wire and rap around the rungs in several places. Keep the ladder stand off setup.

Dehydrate the peppers.
YAHUAH!!
I would have had a fit if Virgil did what Marty did with ladder and chimney! I’m not a fine of heights and I barely could watch him on the roof.
Chicken can turn your compost pile also .
I was always told no meat in compost pile, ever
Pinto beans are to kidney beans what squirrels are to hamsters. Just a little bit more nutty
layer the compost. green waste, brown waste, kitchen waste. Boom. done.
Our cats caught a ton of voles as well
Earning their keep.
Use some cow or pig wire panels make a circle and put compost into it
Not that you will read this but Mycorrhiza is great for helping compost break down and keep it covered
Thanks! Where can we find it?

BioTone Espoma product has it.😊

Why don't you freeze the extra peppers so you have them all year
I will later after the green house has to be harvested. For now fresh is better.
