    It was interesting to me that many of the great operatic tenors of the last several decades have stated that their idol growing up was Mario Lanza. Mario had the skill, talent, sense of style and gusto to sing the opera as well as popular genres.

    Vincent, Thank you a thousand plus times for presenting dear precious Mario's voice in such a wonderful new light. I am old now but I have loved him since I was 13 years old. When people write that he was the greatest tenor of the 20th century, I want to tell them that they're wrong. He was the greatest singer ever. He had everything: he was devastatingly handsome, a wonderful actor, his breath control was unbelievable and he could sing opera as well as everything in "The Great American Songbook". How his role was stolen from him in "The Student Prince" was one of the dirtiest tricks that I've ever heard of Hollywood doing. His beautiful daughter said that he was fired, not because of his weight as the studio claimed. She said that he was fired because when the director told him not to put so much emotion in his singing, Mario told the director "you can tell me how to act, but you can't tell me how to sing". He was blackballed in Hollywood because even though the studio owners were all in competition with one another, they stood firm in not letting actors get any control (not like today). His own business manager either through incompetence or crookedness caused Mario to owe the IRS $250,000 in back taxes. Does anyone have an idea of how much that would be in today's money, especially when artists didn't make the millions they make now? Mario had to go to Italy to make a living. Thank God that we have his beautiful recordings. Thank you for all of your kind words about our beloved Mario.

      Thank you joan for your wonderful comments, arnold cocozza, aka mario lanza, was the greatest tenor, that ever lived!,pavarotti, doming, and carreras, said they use to watch his movies, and that he truly inspired them to sing!!! I have been a member of the mario lanza institute, in philadelphia, and the new york society of mario lanza, for more then 30 years. marios health trainer terry robinson in hollywood, was my best friend, and also marios son damon, who sadly passed away some years ago. mario loved terry robinson, and he thought of him like a brother!. terry lived with mario, and his family. when mario passed away, 10 months later, betty his wife died, leaving his four children, without parents. it was terry robinson who legally adopted them, and raised them, until they were grown. they use to call him uncle terry. i went to terrys 85th birthday in hollywood, there were many celebraties there. terry was a wonderful man, and a true humanitarian terry lived to be 98 years old. god bless him in heaven, with mario, and his family. all the best to you Louie Vaccaro, tenor, las vegas

    Mario Lanza’s voice is a feast for the sense of hearing. We are so blessed to have his recordings. If he had fulfilled his dream of performing opera, maybe we would not have had both opera and popular songs to utterly enjoy, today. I confess, though, that as an opera lover, I would have liked to hear any complete opera by Lanza’s. His voice is superlative.

      Lanza performed in the new Orleans opera stage twice as Pinkerton in madam butterfly. Is voice was magnificent and what people say he had weak voice is rubbish. Before he passed the the Roman opera House, lascala offered him to sing there the metropolitan opera House and the famous tenors were in love with his voice because he out sung them . His voice was very beautiful and powerful

      I am 86. When I was a boarder at Colchester Royal Grammar School, on Saturdays, all boarders were obliged to stay in and support the school rugby teams. But, The Great Caruso was playing at the local cinema. I had been to see it once but on the Saturday afternoon was the last chance. I went to see but mainly to listen to Mario Lanza. For breaking the school rules I was gated (confined to the school grounds) for a month. It was worth it. All those 70 years since, I have always been moved by this man’s amazing operatic tenor.

    The man's musicality was beyond belief, Vince. He had some training, sure. But, the Coke shows show just how amazing he was and how he could adapt his amazing voice, to what I consider his massive strength (the popular song/ballad). I've heard other singer's versions of the songs he recorded, but none of them make me sit up and listen like him. He truly was a once in a lifetime singer and I'm so very happy, thanks to my dear late dad, that I discovered him some thirty-seven (I'm fifty) years ago. Thank you, as always for posting x

    In spite all his detractors, it is undeniable that he had the greatest, most exciting tenor voice of any recorded age in history... and I'm inclined to think of any age, recorded or not. I first heard Mario Lanza, unexpectedly, in 1951, when I was 16 years old, while attending a movie one weekend. He was singing Vesti la giubba in prevues of coming attractions for The Great Caruso. Before that day, I had never heard an operatic aria, but as I listened to "Ridi, pagliaccio..." I felt chills run up and down my spine and I have been a hopeless operaphile ever since. In 3 weeks, I will be 89 years old.

    Bravissimo Vincent, fine selections, and well put together and commented. The 100% Italian in and around me somehow even as a very young whipper snapper gave me an infinity for Opera and the Neapolitan classics.
    Lanza taught me that type of expressive singing can be applied to the "pop" repertoire. Problem is his singing made other "pop" artists, and more operatic singers in pop repertoire, to me seem secchi in comparison (which my mind could not stop doing). The magic of Mario gave me standards almost impossible for others to match. I liked a lot of 40s and 50s pop artists but if I wanted to turn over my soul in pop Mario it had to be.
    My point is this, and it is not a snobby one, Mario had a magical quality in the "pop" repertoire that once it captured you (you put on ears to hear, understand, and appreciate it) you became less satisfied with more common singing. Not that you cannot like "normal" pop artists (I certainly do) just that that special something often seems lacking.

    I just love the dedication and expertise that have gone into creating this. Vince: I would have given anything when I was a lonely 13- or 14-year-old --- and thought I was the only person on the planet who felt what you express so beautifully here about this man's singing --- to have heard such heartfelt and intelligent commentary.
    Great choices (and very stylishly presented), including a couple of gems that I kicked myself for neglecting, such as Fools Rush In. (Spot-on comments too about the phrasing in that rendition.) I also loved how you used the visuals from the film "Serenade" for that brilliant high C finish to "Giannina Mia"!

I used to use cassette tape and Betamax and VHS to crash edit little tributes to Mario back then. 😜😂 I was painfully shy and used to be lost in my own wee musical world, I just didn’t understand or relate to what was actually popular at the time, I felt genuinely out of time.
      I’m really happy with how this wee film turned out... I just wish we had more photos and visuals of him recording.

      @@DiPlacido71 Yes, it's frustrating that we have so few photos of Mario actually at work in the recording studio (and what wouldn't we give for one of those "making of the recording" videos that are a dime a dozen today), but you're already achieved wonders with what we do have, Vince. The same goes for all your videos! There's simply no one else out there with the musical knowledge, creativity, *and* the technical expertise to create such treasures, and they're already reaching a far greater audience than any CD, Blu-ray release or so-called professional documentary could ever achieve. So keep up the fantastic work!

    Spellbinding, Vince. I became increasingly fearful of being electrocuted! Regarding the "Core"-the first one is already sharp and I think he made a decision to simply shriek the second. He does the same thing in his Coke version. Instructive, I think, that Richard Mohr, who I believe was a bit of a stickler, didn't ask for a re-take.

    • @DiPlacido71
      @DiPlacido71  3 года назад +1

      I agree he was already committed after that first Core, he had nowhere to go but to improve things worse! 😜😂
      It does astound me that Richard Mohr didn’t suggest a retake even “just for safety”.

    • @51Linz
      @51Linz 3 года назад +3

      @@DiPlacido71 Since all 4 numbers in that session were done in one take, I assume they had the luxury of time. Perhaps Richard was mindful of Mario's likely reaction. His screeching was intentional, after all. To challenge it would be to challenge Mario's interpretation. That could land one in trouble!😈

      hey lindsay, mario was not a shrieker, his voice was pure, full of feeling and emotion, i have been a member of the mario lanza institute in philadelphia, and the new york society of mario lanza, now for more than 30 years, and was very good friends with marios son Damon, who sadly passed away some years ago. my best friend was terry robinson, who was marios health trainer, and took mario to recording studios, where mario recorded his songs, he was also marios best friend. all the best Louie Vaccaro, tenor, las vegas.

      @@louisvaccaro5865 Hello Louis. I was also very close to Damon, and often spent weeks with him in succession. By his own admission, his father's music gene bypassed him. Read my eulogy to Damon in The One Tenor for details. The shriek in "Core" was intentional on Mario's part, but in my view could have been executed better. Since it would seem they had the luxury of time, I continue not to understand why they didn't do another take.

    A people like Mario del Monaco, Franco Corelli, Juiseppe di Stephano , Beniamino.Gigli were good at both opera and neapolitan songs. Mario was perfect in these but, in.addition, his singing of american songs will stay forever unsurpassed.These songs/ melodies also will never be surpassed/recreated because the media appreciating such songs is all dead in US ( except me, but I was not born in US!)So, Mario died along with his audience . " He was the lucky one...". Recall the generation.of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddie around this time.. Claudio Villa was intermediate variant of singing. His singing overlapped a bit with that by Mario. After that...Frank Sinatra and his generation and, after that- nothing. It is interesting, though, that in European media loving Lanza- style music is still alive and well even though, in Italy this style of music is practically extinct. Young Italians do not pay attention whatsoever to opera, neapolitan songs, etc.And their adorable pop singers are not singing any more. I bet, only much older people in Italy, France, Argentina, Mexico, Russia, still appreciate Mario's divine ( cosmic, ethernal) voice. I leave for readers/listeners to decide whom to blame for this situation.
