OMG, you're right. By forcing the king to take the rook, the PC trades rook for queen rather than queen for queen (which the Amiga king would otherwise have taken)
I suspect the Amiga gets its lower difficulty by avoiding going for the kill while the more modern PC plays more gently overall, but will still move towards a victory when the situation presents itself. This is a sample size of 1 (at the lowest difficulty) though, so this is just speculation.
18:32: And that was the mistake. The correct move at that point would have been Kc1 to prevent Rb1++. And the correct answer at 18:33, rather than Rb2, would have been a straight Rb1++, a classical opposing kings and rook checkmate (!), not a check as said at 18:38. And at 19:43, the correct move is either Ke1 to prevent Rb1. Kc1 is also possible but would result in perma-check.
I loved connecting in the day the computer labs Amigas and PCs between each other over a null modem cable and have them play Battle Chess against themselves. I recently thought of hacking the Amiga version to be able to play over a network and look at changing the chess pieces.
I loved Battle Chess on my A2000 back in the '90s, I've still got both! This makes my wonder what other games you could get an Amiga to play against a modern day PC.
This is a great video as usual. Lady F. looks pretty. I do think the graphics on the new version look very good. However, it reminds me that even tho graphics are very good these days, there are limited amounts of creative new games. If I had COD, I would not also want Overwatch, and shooter, after shooter. I could see this style of animation being used with another strategy game a la Heroes and Might and Magic. One game that might be cool to be redone with these nice animations is the 8 bit "7 Cities of Gold" which was among one of my favorite titles. Stay well and thank you again !!!
Interplay and Virgin Interactive used to be in the same business district where I work currently, under the landing path for the John Wayne / Santa Ana airport.
So the queen in the new PC game was modeled after Ladyfractic? ;-) Well the Amiga wins hands down. While the PC version has (of course after some 30+ years) the better animation and graphics, the Amiga version, besides beating the PC, has a higher charming factor. Btw. Nostalgianerd once tested the Spectrum ZX81 (or even ZX80?) version against a modern chess program. You'll find it searching on RUclips.
Richie: Right, let me get this sorted out. Now the bent vicar stands next to the queen. And the queen goes in every direction. Eddie: That's right. Richie: [looking disgusted] And they let children play this, you say? I mean, it's pretty strong stuff, isn't it Eddie? You know, knights taking prawns? And apparently, if a prawn goes all the way he turns into a queen!
ATTACK!! ATTACK!! ATTACK!! Over the top lads! CHARGE!!! Aaaaaagh!!! The blood the horror , I'm getting out of here! Shoot that Prawn ! Hooray it's the Queen's own ketchup! That's your move is it? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I wish you had said this was in the pipeline I would have happily built you a 300 baud to TCP/IP bridge, I love getting dissimilar hardware & protocols to play nice with each other. oh well maybe next time, Great vid anyhow, keep up the nice Retro work
@@RetroRecipes Well, there is a definitive potential for success. The hardware side should be relatively easy - e.g. using a wifi modem on the Amiga. Now you "only" need to mesh the protocols together. As they both only should contain non-sensitive data, I doubt that the protocol inherits any encryption for the "Game of Kings" version - except for SSL/TLS maybe, which can be bridged out. I really think that Holly would be able to make that work in a reasonable amount of time. Gosh, we'll finally will be able to observe an Amiga to stomp on modern tech fully automated!
Ladyfractic is beyond gorgeous!!! Cool video too. I loved the old Battlechess!
I loved connecting in the day the computer labs Amigas and PCs between each other over a null modem cable and have them play Battle Chess against themselves.
I recently thought of hacking the Amiga version to be able to play over a network and look at changing the chess pieces.
Wow, that red bishop is an angry drunk. And we’ve all gotta love Ladyfractic’s cosplay!
Loved every minute of this! Thank you very much!
Great idea for a video. Used to love the original Battle Chess. Nice one Amigo, I mean Amiga
I loved Battle Chess on my A2000 back in the '90s, I've still got both! This makes my wonder what other games you could get an Amiga to play against a modern day PC.
I was not expecting the knight taking rook to be a reference to Troy (2004) of all things. (~9:40)
Stay well and thank you again
!!!
There are so many more games out there.
Interplay and Virgin Interactive used to be in the same business district where I work currently, under the landing path for the John Wayne / Santa Ana airport.
Morning coffee and a new RR episode, perfect start to a saturday.
The fight at 9:40 is a recreation of Achilles killing the buff dude in the movie Troy with Brad Pitt. Well executed
So the queen in the new PC game was modeled after Ladyfractic? ;-)
Well the Amiga wins hands down.
National Lampoons Chess Maniac Five Billion and One. Loved that one!
In addition to a IBM/PC compatible of the Amiga version, I remember also having a Star Wars version as well as a kid.
Why didnt I found you earlier, I love this serie! I am actually blown XD
PCBWay stands for:
Perifractic Can Battle Wargames And You!
Wow that's some high definition of the queens fighting right there! That one slap looked real! Lol
Best game of chess I've seen played is the match between Richie and Eddie in Bottom.
RIP Rik
Richie: Right, let me get this sorted out. Now the bent vicar stands next to the queen. And the queen goes in every direction.
Eddie: That's right.
Richie: [looking disgusted] And they let children play this, you say? I mean, it's pretty strong stuff, isn't it Eddie? You know, knights taking prawns? And apparently, if a prawn goes all the way he turns into a queen!
ATTACK!! ATTACK!! ATTACK!!
Over the top lads! CHARGE!!!
Aaaaaagh!!!
The blood the horror ,
I'm getting out of here!
Shoot that Prawn !
Hooray it's the Queen's own ketchup!
That's your move is it?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
All Hail Queen Ladyfractic!
Fun video! I agree, I prefer the humour in the Miggy version.
Well, I guess I can stay up for another half hour...
20:48 I was juuuuuust about to comment "don't the rooks remind you of that guy from RotJ?"
I wish you had said this was in the pipeline I would have happily built you a 300 baud to TCP/IP bridge, I love getting dissimilar hardware & protocols to play nice with each other. oh well maybe next time, Great vid anyhow, keep up the nice Retro work
I did actually share it on social media last week but it's ok. Do you think it would've worked?
@@RetroRecipes Well, there is a definitive potential for success. The hardware side should be relatively easy - e.g. using a wifi modem on the Amiga. Now you "only" need to mesh the protocols together. As they both only should contain non-sensitive data, I doubt that the protocol inherits any encryption for the "Game of Kings" version - except for SSL/TLS maybe, which can be bridged out.
I really think that Holly would be able to make that work in a reasonable amount of time. Gosh, we'll finally will be able to observe an Amiga to stomp on modern tech fully automated! I (almost) can't wait to see this! Where's my Battlechess boot disk?
Nope, sadly I can't help. As an "essantial worker" atm I barely have time to watch my RUclips subscriptions.
To all you "isolated folks": Try to enjoy the long spring break for as long as it goes and does not negatively affect your lifes. We'll need all your strength for the aftermath!
LadyFractic is sooooo good looking!
And thanx for the review of the chess games
God bless you
My favorite piece was the Rook. I loved how it turned into a monster and when it encountered the Queen, it would eat her! Good memories. Thanks for the upload :)
The rook vs king animation was amazing. Star wars kid returns and has a heart attack.
The last time I saw two computers play chess was Holly and Queeg.
