AND if you're in need of some great 3D models head over to thangs.com/
In this episode of Layer by Layer, we are joined by Paul Powers, CEO of Physna, to discuss the past, present, and future of Thangs.
Discover the genesis of Physna, born from a desire to bridge the gap in 3D search technology, and how Paul and his team navigated the complexities of using "physical DNA" to create a search engine that understands the geometry of 3D objects. This pioneering technology has enabled the identification, analysis, and comparison of 3D models, paving the way for innovations in various industries.
We also discuss the technical and ethical challenges of protecting 3D files, the potential of generative AI in 3D modeling, and how the future of 3D technology, according to Paul, lies in its integration with VR and AR, transforming how we interact with the digital world.

    About Slant 3D
    🏭 High-Volume 3D Printing: Scalability Meets Flexibility
Slant 3D's Large-Scale 3D Print Farms utilize 1000's of FDM 3D printers working 24/7 to offer limitless scalability and unparalleled flexibility. Whether it's 100 or 100,000 parts, our system can handle it reliably, while still allowing for real-time design updates, ensuring products evolve with the times. This adaptability is key in today's fast-paced world.
    🌿 Sustainable Manufacturing: Eco-Friendly Efficiency
Embrace a system that drastically reduces carbon emissions by eliminating carbon-intensive steps in the supply chain, such as global shipping and warehousing. Our approach minimizes this footprint, offering a more sustainable manufacturing option.
    ⚙️ Digital Warehouses: Parts On-Demand
Think of print farms as a "Digital Warehouse", meaning we can store your parts digitally on a server rather than physically on a shelf. parts are available on-demand, reducing the need for extensive physical inventory.

My 3D printer is definitely a tool. I always try to print replacements for all my old things that no longer have parts available including car parts, microwave parts, vacuum valves, boxes (so many tool boxes!!), broken kids toys to pass on to grandkids, phone cases, gun holsters, etc... Great interview. I really love you both at Slant and Thangs!!

What an absolutely amazing and awesome story and interview! No such thing as "irrelevant because it's not 3D printing" the past creates who we are. Dont change anything you guys are doing. I personally love all the information. Everything is relevant! 🇺🇸

This interview is like a box of chocolates (Forrest Gump reference).
Gabe, such great questions, and Paul being able to provide such a great narrative with context. Like how you two were able to pick up off each other and provide a very insightful perspective as related to 3d stuff in general and make it relatable. So much knowledge and insight here.
Loved Pauls indirect answer (it came later) to the question regarding "file types" (1:22:00), being Thangs makes "plug-ins". The implication being integration into a designers workflow, not needing to create intermediary work products that need to be reinterpreted. This is very forward thinking. Much in the same context of Slant-3D working to create service API's to interface and integrate into existing toolchains. You two are also very focused on growing a heathy community, which is awesome. (it shows your confidence in the industry)
Regarding the iPhone and VissionPro. The key feature most people don't realized that made the iPhone innovated is how touch screen was make to feel and look like it was real. Up to the iPhone touch screens where slow, didn't flow smoothly and didn't support multipoint touch, or other gestures consistently. VissionPro is interesting in that it generates realtime 3d representation of the environment, labeling (identifying) surfaces and objects. It knows walls, floor, ceiling, chairs, tables, etc. their dimensions and relative position realtime. The 3d representation moves, underlays, or augments seamlessly with the 3d world the user is in. Not only light (vision), but more significantly 3d sound integration.

Been thinking of starting a thangs for my daughter's models. She does cool as sht on nomad. Thanks for this I am more inclined now towards thangs. I have Been debating on thangs or patreon for her. She wants to raise money for engineering college one day. I am so proud of her and thanks you so much slant for the informative video that has helped me sway a little more to thangs. Wow such a great video.

The "limited liability" company type in Germany (GmbH) does require you to be liable with at least 25k, BUT:
    - You only need to have half of that cash in hand during founding
    - You CAN use the cash for operations
There are also some other company structures like UG (also Limited liability and only 1 € of starting Kapital), GbR (for multiple people starting a business - it's basically cost free, but you are personally liable for your company), EU (Einzelunternehmen, same as GbR but for a single person). So the system for building companies here is not that bad.

    What a fantastic concept.
Physna created an agnostic digest system! So many technical questions!! What is the resolution? How does the digest string handle scale?
Please, please, Gabe tell Paul to lock his system up as tightly as possible. If he ever has a data breach this information will be used by AI as another language leading to text-to-3Dmodel AI agents. Don't get me wrong, this WILL happen in time anyway, but I want the 3D community to exist as is for a while longer.

    • @NOTNOTJON

Also, I would wager a guess that Paul hasn't pushed this far ahead yet, but he should build upon his system so that not only is it dimensionally agnostic, but also contextually agnostic which will be tricky, but if his team has built the math this far, shouldn't be unthinakable.

question: should I learn fusion360 or solidworks for engineering (for 3d printing)?
I've heard that I should learn solidworks first and then move to fusion360, should I do that?

I used to tinker with my printers. These days I almost always want it to just be a tool. When I slice a model and throw it on the printer it ought to just work. I don't want to futz with it, much less need to futz with it.
