I believe the reason some units can't attack the apple is because it's technically neither a ground unit nor an air unit, which doesn't matter for units like marines which don't have filters for ground or air targets, but for marauders or firebats, which can only attack ground units, they can't attack the apple because it's not considered a "ground" unit. To fix this, you can go to the unit's "Plane Array" tab and select Ground.
Well hell, you're exactly right. I was so focused on comparing flags and lists of traits that I never even thought of its plane array. Thanks so much, this one was a real annoyance for me and you've solved it.
