It's still crazy to me that you, of all people, were made "redundant". You were literally the only person at Gamespot who's name I knew. Not to say the other people at the company don't do good work, but your Expert Reacts and Loadout series were the only things on that channel I consistently watched. With their trailers, reviews, and preview coverage, I'm obviously only clicking on the small number of games I have interest in. But I always knew Expert Reacts would be entertaining, whether is was Johnathan, Toby, or anyone else.
I came to say this exact thing. Literally. Expert reacts and loadout were, admittedly, the only things I watched. I LOVE those series. It's makes me sad and pissed off that it's done.
I know Jonathan was "the guy" when it came to Experts Reacts but shout out to some of the other guests. I really enjoyed Dr Rebecca Simon when she did the Black Flag episode, she was so knowledgeable. David Rawlings brought some great energy and you could tell how much he enjoyed the synthesis of two things he loved, that being Star Wars and sword fighting. Finally, I've seen a lot from Billy Billingham, I think he has such an inspiring story and he seems a top bloke who appreciated both the realism and the shock and awe moments. Still miss the show as a feature of my Saturday evenings.
I really do feel super lucky to have met so many fascinating people! They're all so lovely. I almost feel bad for getting Toby Capwell into Warhammer though.

I still cannot comprehend who at GameSpot thought it was a good idea to fire the person making their most popular series. Experts react was literally pulling 5x more views than any other video. Either way I truly hope you can set up your own thing and hopefully collab with Jonathan in the future (and not just cause I want to see that Valkyria Chronicles video :D). And as other people said maybe consider reaching out to second wind? Your stories are similar and I'm sure they'd be interested in having more talent onboard.
Totally agree, only just realised the only reason I was watching GameSpot was because of the Expert React series, mainly with Jonathan. So I just looked at the rest of their videos. It really was the Expert React series that was getting all the love. For as far as I scrolled back. Anything else had a maximum of 30k views, unless it was something big like a Black Ops 6 trailer/gameplay for example.
I was really looking forward to the Black ops 6 expert reacts and see Jonathan’s pain and disgust with the MP5 in that game. Hopefully you can continue to work with him in the future. I eagerly waited for Saturday to watch the new episode drop.
I too was so disappointed to see that it ended, especially just before the annual cod release. If there is only one more that you can create, please make it a call of duty BO6 one.

By like a factor of 10 on the least performing firearm expert react ones too. The ones that did "well" got so many more views. Like 5k for the other videos compared to 250k-500k or more

GameSpot just did the math. They figured they can make more money or, at the very least, spend less money, on stuff that isn't directly profitable to them. Sites like GameSpot, Polygon, Kotaku etc. are dying a slow death. Their site traffic has been slowly declining for years so it's no surprise at all that in a desperate attempt to save money they would start letting people go.
As a firearms nerd more than a gun guy, and avid shooter gamer, firearms expert reacts was the perfect fun companion to The Royale Armouries and Forgotten Weapons videos. You could tell that both of you where having genuine fun while recording. I hope we will get to see a contract skirting reboot or revival some day. Call it Trade Duress With Jonathan Furguson. A fun reference to both games using fudged guns to avoid trade dress and you using a modified format to not conflict with experts react. Even if the format was just you both discussing how certain games are changing iconic weapons I would watch the absolute hell out of it. A man can dream

According to YT, Gamespot was one of my most viewed channels this year, and I know it was solely due to your content. I am living proof your position wasn't "redundant."
It's the only thing I watched there too. You can check numbers his videos pulled, this content was extremely successful It makes no sense why they did this, outside of potential ideological reasons and related youtube policies on firearms

I feel like Expert Reacts hit its stride just as it got cancelled. Putting yourself on Camera alongside Jonathan really made it better. Having the rapport between yourselves and being able to hear your reasoning for things etc. As well as a target for Jonathans disgust at the cursed nonsense you pulled out was brilliant. Also not enough people are talking about being sad about Loadout. With Christmas coming up i was all set for the next Series of it! The last one was the best yet.

Not only were you and Jonathan pivotal in the direction of gamespot, you guys were also pivotal in making firearms as a subject more palatable for people who otherwise may have disliked firearms. You and Jonathan brought an understanding element as well as an entertaining element to firearms that de-politicized them for many people inside and outside the U.S. I can say I hope for this and that, and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn’t want another expert reacts series. Not just with Jonathan, but other experts and how their profession pertains to games. Outside of content, I also hope that you and Jonathan get to work together in ways that aren't entirely publicized. I hope what you do next brings you joy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making loadout and the expert reacts series. Thank you - that was (and is) absolutely one of my (our) goals. Not only no politics, but to make the subject interesting and accessible whether you're passionate about it or wary of it.
I have to say these videos have been a good display of a kind of fascination and intrigue and a voice that firearms content on RUclips is frequently lacking - a reasonable, respectful, self-aware interest in weapons and their use (Forgotten Weapons is a similarly good and thoughtful resource). A lot of videos, even ones produced by people that have a detailed fascination with firearms mechanics, seem to come from a perspective that fetishises firearms and the activity of shooting and revels in how badass they make them feel. It's all very overindulgent and performative and often yes unfortunately politically charged. Which makes it all the more impressive that Dave's firearms content for Gamespot was so well-grounded, as video games are often very indulgent and excessive . I don't know if that difference is due to Dave's direction or Jonathan's input, but overall they did a really great job of something that could have very easily been obnoxiously and insensitively handled, and made quite charming and intriguing content of it instead.
From one ex-GameSpotter to another, good luck, mate. Funnilty enough I pitched some gun content back in 2008 and there was a lot of discomfort at the idea. It's been exciting to see your content evolve.
Ian at Forgotten Weapons is pretty open about the struggles he has with gun content on RUclips. So I'm sure there was some of that going on too at GameSpot. But if that's all it was, then why leave all the past videos up? Plus, Dave's Expert Reacts with the psychiatrist analyzing the themes of Silent Hill 2 proved that you don't need to stick only to weaponry to attract good numbers. It's inexplicable to me, especially given his nearly decade long record of successful video making and name recognition at the company.
Absolutely insane that a company specialising in GAMES media would be uncomfortable about content involving firearms when shooters are and have always been one of the biggest genres in gaming

Competition is insane, it's all Rage/Emotional bait, Informative or Memes. It's not the same as when he started, it's going to be basically doing it all over again. He has better odds of finding a new media company and moving forward there.
Nick seems to be a fan, but he replied in a reddit thread that Dave doesn't need them to be successful. "Haha if it all worked like that for sure! That said, if he's got all that equipment and can do it all himself, can almost bet he'll launch a Patreon and just hire an editor to do it for him. He'd make way more money on his own than with us. No plans to hire anyone new for the forseeable future on our end!" I'm supporting both either way.
I sincerely hope you manage to continue Experts Reacts in some way, somehow. It was one of my favourite series on all of RUclips. Not only with My Boi Ferguson, but also all the other experts we got to see too!
To think that you, the only guy from Gamespot I knew, was fired, is so wild and crazy to me. Your expert reacts and your work with Jonathan is some of my favourite content on RUclips. Not only did you, though your series showcase some awesome games, by having real experts in on it, you also educated people on the real world counterpart. And who said you can't learn anything from video games? Like myself, I think all of your fans hope, that you can keep up doing this line of work, especially with Jonathan, you two just have such a cool way of working together. Even if that's not the case, hope you find something that you want to do and huge thanks for the work and content you've given us through the years.

My name is Ethan and I'm a firearms author and historian from here in the UK, thanks to your videos I was exposed to Jonathan's work on a more broad level and I was lucky enough to go and visit him a couple of years ago to consult on a book I was working on at the time. The work that you have done to push the love of the intricacies of firearms has been amazing, your work coupled with Jonathan's expertise has done so much for that whole space and as somebody involved in that scene, I can't thank you enough for broadening the spotlight on it all. I'm the same as most people here; I only paid attention to the GameSpot channel for the Expert Reacts series! You can find "typical" gaming content everywhere on RUclips, but seeing you bring in experts who may or may not be into the hobby was always really entertaining. I hope you find a way to continue doing the kind of content you enjoy!
I know I’m not alone in this the only reason I was subscribed to gamespot was for expert reacts series (especially firearms expert reacts). If could start a new series doing the same thing or maybe even expanding on the idea for example Jonathan and someone who designed/animated the in game firearms would be amazing and interesting. Either way it’s gamespot’s lose don’t know what the hell they were thinking. Keep up the amazing work!

Yourself and the Experts React and Loadout series were the only reason I had to watch Gamespot's content. Their loss. I was glad you guys got to get the SOG Prairie Fire video out at least. One of my favourite details in that DLC is how the mounted M60s often have C-Ration tins snapped into their belt-bracket (they just happened to be a perfect fit) - this was an actual field modification, done to help avoid the belt snagging on the gun's receiver whilst feeding. Anyway, I'm interested to see what you do next, and I hope yourself and Jonathan will have the opportunity to collaborate again.

I know you mainly through Ferguson's work. His back probably hurts from carrying so many youtube channels, but you were the man behind the man putting in the work make sure his stuff was consistently delivered to us in a timely manner. And for that, I thank you.
I just want to say- and i know I'm weeks late to this video- but I really did love your particular brand of expert reacts. I'm a big consumer of that expert react format/genre (for lack of a better word) but one of the big things I always loved about the experts (not just jonathan) you guys would bring was how they weren't just poopooing on most of what's going on and were sometimes even impressed by what games could really do as an artform (if that isn't too pretentious of a thing to say) by seeing how games portray these hyper specific details, whether its the portrayal of guns, armor or combat. I particularly loved how you would sometimes jump in to say something about the broader context or the history certain details have in games like how certain guns are just portrayed a certain way in gaming because that's always been how they've portrayed them or interjecting game lore whenever you were familiar with a franchise if the experts started to get confused. I also really loved how a lot of the experts were also very visibly nerdy and geeky about certain pieces of media and they weren't just these buttoned up experts but were visibly geeky and fans (or became fans of...) of stuff like Star Wars, Warhammer and Alien. Whatever happens next, with the way things have gone and the overwhelming support you've gotten I'm sure things will work out, here's hoping.
Really surprised to see this come up, genuinely only really subscribed to GameSpot for the content you presented so I’ll happily trade that sub for this! Game journalism seems to have been on the down turn over the past year or so, the content you provided was unique and interesting by comparison so it’s a little hard to understand their decision, but their loss. I'm deeply saddened I won't see it anymore, but there are several hours of it to rewatch. Whoever decided to make you redundant must have completely broken their brain. You put together a really great team of experts that consistently made entertaining and informative content that drew in a whole new audience to their channel. Throwing that away is just idiotic. The developing rapport over your work with Jonathan was a key part of what made it so great. The running jokes, the way you gradually learned more about the world of guns from him (til you were occasionally able to spot things he missed), and your continuing efforts to drive him mad with cursed gun models were all key parts of the fun for viewers. Firearms Expert Reacts was the only series I watched regularly on RUclips these past few years, and I did so from the very beginning to the end. I'm really happy that it kept going for as long as it did, and that you, Jonathan, and all others involved kept it to such a high standard and made it so consistently interesting and entertaining. A highlight of the series lifespan began at the point when you yourself, Dave, started taking some more space in the videos and we got to see more of your interactions and chemistry with Jonathan. So there's no doubt in my mind that you'll keep making excellent entertaining content, whether it's on here, on twitch, or perhaps wherever you may end up working in the future. Looking forward to whatever comes next!!

I always like the Expert Reacts: Firearms series, but I don't think it really grabbed me until you were more on screen and the banter between you and Jonathan. You guys both made that show what it is by the end, not having both of you there will really change things sadly. I really hope we get to see something similar from you two in the future!

I can't speak to Gamespot, but I visited the Royal Armouries Museum (that houses a yes yes, on we go) last weekend. I spent about 4 hours in there total, across a day. It being free entry helped as we could take a break for lunch then return. The collection was dense and fascinating, though I wish there had been more modern equipment on display - the most up-to-date displays were WWII. Loved it, thank you for exposing me to the museum/experts in house, good luck going forward.

It's still crazy to me that you, of all people, were made "redundant". You were literally the only person at Gamespot who's name I knew.
Not to say the other people at the company don't do good work, but your Expert Reacts and Loadout series were the only things on that channel I consistently watched. With their trailers, reviews, and preview coverage, I'm obviously only clicking on the small number of games I have interest in. But I always knew Expert Reacts would be entertaining, whether is was Johnathan, Toby, or anyone else.

I came to say this exact thing. Literally. Expert reacts and loadout were, admittedly, the only things I watched. I LOVE those series. It's makes me sad and pissed off that it's done.
Yeah. I enjoyed a lot of Gamespot videos, but Dave (and Jonathon with him) was the person I properly recognised, and made sure to follow up with.
I know Jonathan was "the guy" when it came to Experts Reacts but shout out to some of the other guests. I really enjoyed Dr Rebecca Simon when she did the Black Flag episode, she was so knowledgeable. David Rawlings brought some great energy and you could tell how much he enjoyed the synthesis of two things he loved, that being Star Wars and sword fighting. Finally, I've seen a lot from Billy Billingham, I think he has such an inspiring story and he seems a top bloke who appreciated both the realism and the shock and awe moments.
Still miss the show as a feature of my Saturday evenings.

Totally agree, only just realised the only reason I was watching GameSpot was because of the Expert React series, mainly with Jonathan. So I just looked at the rest of their videos. It really was the Expert React series that was getting all the love. For as far as I scrolled back. Anything else had a maximum of 30k views, unless it was something big like a Black Ops 6 trailer/gameplay for example.

I was really looking forward to the Black ops 6 expert reacts and see Jonathan’s pain and disgust with the MP5 in that game. Hopefully you can continue to work with him in the future. I eagerly waited for Saturday to watch the new episode drop.

By like a factor of 10 on the least performing firearm expert react ones too. The ones that did "well" got so many more views. Like 5k for the other videos compared to 250k-500k or more

Sites like GameSpot, Polygon, Kotaku etc. are dying a slow death. Their site traffic has been slowly declining for years so it's no surprise at all that in a desperate attempt to save money they would start letting people go.

As a firearms nerd more than a gun guy, and avid shooter gamer, firearms expert reacts was the perfect fun companion to The Royale Armouries and Forgotten Weapons videos. You could tell that both of you where having genuine fun while recording. I hope we will get to see a contract skirting reboot or revival some day. Call it Trade Duress With Jonathan Furguson. A fun reference to both games using fudged guns to avoid trade dress and you using a modified format to not conflict with experts react. Even if the format was just you both discussing how certain games are changing iconic weapons I would watch the absolute hell out of it.

I feel like Expert Reacts hit its stride just as it got cancelled. Putting yourself on Camera alongside Jonathan really made it better. Having the rapport between yourselves and being able to hear your reasoning for things etc. As well as a target for Jonathans disgust at the cursed nonsense you pulled out was brilliant.
Also not enough people are talking about being sad about Loadout. With Christmas coming up i was all set for the next Series of it! The last one was the best yet.

Not only were you and Jonathan pivotal in the direction of gamespot, you guys were also pivotal in making firearms as a subject more palatable for people who otherwise may have disliked firearms. You and Jonathan brought an understanding element as well as an entertaining element to firearms that de-politicized them for many people inside and outside the U.S.
I can say I hope for this and that, and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn’t want another expert reacts series. Not just with Jonathan, but other experts and how their profession pertains to games.
Outside of content, I also hope that you and Jonathan get to work together in ways that aren't entirely publicized. I hope what you do next brings you joy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making loadout and the expert reacts series. You guys, as well as your team at gamespot, helped make some of the best content on the internet during the pandemic and I hope you're as happy with your work as we all are.

Thank you - that was (and is) absolutely one of my (our) goals. Not only no politics, but to make the subject interesting and accessible whether you're passionate about it or wary of it.
I have to say these videos have been a good display of a kind of fascination and intrigue and a voice that firearms content on RUclips is frequently lacking - a reasonable, respectful, self-aware interest in weapons and their use (Forgotten Weapons is a similarly good and thoughtful resource).
A lot of videos, even ones produced by people that have a detailed fascination with firearms mechanics, seem to come from a perspective that fetishises firearms and the activity of shooting and revels in how badass they make them feel. It's all very overindulgent and performative and often yes unfortunately politically charged. Which makes it all the more impressive that Dave's firearms content for Gamespot was so well-grounded, as video games are often very indulgent and excessive .
I don't know if that difference is due to Dave's direction or Jonathan's input, but overall they did a really great job of something that could have very easily been obnoxiously and insensitively handled, and made quite charming and intriguing content of it instead.
From one ex-GameSpotter to another, good luck, mate. Funnilty enough I pitched some gun content back in 2008 and there was a lot of discomfort at the idea. It's been exciting to see your content evolve.
Ian at Forgotten Weapons is pretty open about the struggles he has with gun content on RUclips. So I'm sure there was some of that going on too at GameSpot. But if that's all it was, then why leave all the past videos up? Plus, Dave's Expert Reacts with the psychiatrist analyzing the themes of Silent Hill 2 proved that you don't need to stick only to weaponry to attract good numbers. It's inexplicable to me, especially given his nearly decade long record of successful video making and name recognition at the company.
Absolutely insane that a company specialising in GAMES media would be uncomfortable about content involving firearms when shooters are and have always been one of the biggest genres in gaming

To think that you, the only guy from Gamespot I knew, was fired, is so wild and crazy to me. Your expert reacts and your work with Jonathan is some of my favourite content on RUclips. Not only did you, though your series showcase some awesome games, by having real experts in on it, you also educated people on the real world counterpart. And who said you can't learn anything from video games? Like myself, I think all of your fans hope, that you can keep up doing this line of work, especially with Jonathan, you two just have such a cool way of working together. Even if that's not the case, hope you find something that you want to do and huge thanks for the work and content you've given us through the years.

I'm the same as most people here; I only paid attention to the GameSpot channel for the Expert Reacts series! You can find "typical" gaming content everywhere on RUclips, but seeing you bring in experts who may or may not be into the hobby was always really entertaining. I know I’m not alone in this the only reason I was subscribed to gamespot was for expert reacts series (especially firearms expert reacts). If could start a new series doing the same thing or maybe even expanding on the idea for example Jonathan and someone who designed/animated the in game firearms would be amazing and interesting. I was glad you guys got to get the SOG Prairie Fire video out at least. One of my favourite details in that DLC is how the mounted M60s often have C-Ration tins snapped into their belt-bracket (they just happened to be a perfect fit) - this was an actual field modification, done to help avoid the belt snagging on the gun's receiver whilst feeding.
Anyway, I'm interested to see what you do next, and I hope yourself and Jonathan will have the opportunity to collaborate again.

I know you mainly through Ferguson's work. His back probably hurts from carrying so many youtube channels, but you were the man behind the man putting in the work make sure his stuff was consistently delivered to us in a timely manner. And for that, I thank you.
I just want to say- and i know I'm weeks late to this video- but I really did love your particular brand of expert reacts. I'm a big consumer of that expert react format/genre (for lack of a better word) but one of the big things I always loved about the experts (not just jonathan) you guys would bring was how they weren't just poopooing on most of what's going on and were sometimes even impressed by what games could really do as an artform (if that isn't too pretentious of a thing to say) by seeing how games portray these hyper specific details, whether its the portrayal of guns, armor or combat.
I particularly loved how you would sometimes jump in to say something about the broader context or the history certain details have in games like how certain guns are just portrayed a certain way in gaming because that's always been how they've portrayed them or interjecting game lore whenever you were familiar with a franchise if the experts started to get confused.
I also really loved how a lot of the experts were also very visibly nerdy and geeky about certain pieces of media and they weren't just these buttoned up experts but were visibly geeky and fans (or became fans of...) of stuff like Star Wars, Warhammer and Alien.
Whatever happens next, with the way things have gone and the overwhelming support you've gotten I'm sure things will work out, here's hoping.

Whoever decided to make you redundant must have completely broken their brain. You put together a really great team of experts that consistently made entertaining and informative content that drew in a whole new audience to their channel. Throwing that away is just idiotic. The developing rapport over your work with Jonathan was a key part of what made it so great. The running jokes, the way you gradually learned more about the world of guns from him (til you were occasionally able to spot things he missed), and your continuing efforts to drive him mad with cursed gun models were all key parts of the fun for viewers. Firearms Expert Reacts was the only series I watched regularly on RUclips these past few years, and I did so from the very beginning to the end. I'm really happy that it kept going for as long as it did, and that you, Jonathan, and all others involved kept it to such a high standard and made it so consistently interesting and entertaining.
A highlight of the series lifespan began at the point when you yourself, Dave, started taking some more space in the videos and we got to see more of your interactions and chemistry with Jonathan. So there's no doubt in my mind that you'll keep making excellent entertaining content, whether it's on here, on twitch, or perhaps wherever you may end up working in the future. Looking forward to whatever comes next!!

I always like the Expert Reacts: Firearms series, but I don't think it really grabbed me until you were more on screen and the banter between you and Jonathan. You guys both made that show what it is by the end, not having both of you there will really change things sadly. I really hope we get to see something similar from you two in the future!

In my youtube recap for the year gamespot was one of my most viewed channels purely from the expert reacts series. Some of my favourite content on RUclips, I hope the best for you and can't wait to see what you do next!
How do they make you redundant when your Expert Reacts and Loadout series were the only things on that channel I consistently watched?! Now GameSpot is dead to me.

I'm super down to see you making independent content reacting and explaining game stuff, not just necessarily weapons, you truly seem to enjoy gaming and firearm history and design, unlike some other jornalists, and it is always exciting to see someone talk about something they are passionate about, even if they don't have as deep knowledge as someone like Jonathan Ferguson Keeper of Firearms and artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history, you are a very charismatic person and and along with Jonathan, did an awesome job explaining some more technical stuff to lay people, as much as I love Jonathan, the series couldn't have happened without you, so I truly hope you keep putting out content that you like, and I hope you can work again with Jonathan in some capacity in the future, wish you success man, its a shame Gamespot let you go, and I'm sure they'll regret that decision.

I can't speak to Gamespot, but I visited the Royal Armouries Museum (that houses a yes yes, on we go) last weekend.
I spent about 4 hours in there total, across a day. It being free entry helped as we could take a break for lunch then return. The collection was dense and fascinating, though I wish there had been more modern equipment on display - the most up-to-date displays were WWII.
Loved it, thank you for exposing me to the museum/experts in house, good luck going forward.
You, Jonathan and the other experts are honestly the reason why I am still aware of Gamespot YT. Gutted that you were let go man, an episode on CoD BO6 would've been peak..

I only ever watch GameSpot videos when it's you and Jonathan Ferguson. I only ended up clicking on your channel when I saw your pinned comment on the video covering Black, about five minutes ago. It's gonna be weird not having you on the show. I hope you have nothing but success going forward.
You aren't redundant, you produced, and created really genuinely interesting content as well as hosted amazing guests with great questions/pacing. I am positive you will land where you want to be, but I am happy to support you in transition. Cheers brother
Gamespot genuinely doesn't understand how beneficial you were for them, primarily with your experts reacts content especially with someone like Johnathan Ferguson which in my opinion was a very big mindshare of content for them. You and Johnathan worked so good I hope you two can make more content together; You two are genuinely are a dynamic duo and I hope we can see more of that content. Not even getting to the warhammer contet which helped me get some understanding into that world. Sincerely big ups man.a

How can you be made redundant when you have an unique spot on the channel ? I'm only subscribed to Gamespot for the work you and Jonathan do together, I'm pretty sure it is one of, if not THE most watched stuff there, I'm really shocked they made this decision... Hope to see you two collaborate again soon, there's not another duo like you in geek'n'guns culture !

Wanted to say again that I appreciated all the hard work everyone put into Expert Reacts and Loadout, and how I very much enjoyed those projects. Always a highlight in the week.
