Most US car buyers know very little about who owns or where the cars are built. All they care about is the brand. When I tell people that Stellantis may sell the brands Dodge/Ram/Chryler to companies like Geely, who owns Volvo, and SAIC, who owns MG, they ask when Dodge was bought by Stellantis and where in Detroit is Stellatis located. After I told them they were headquartered out of the Netherlands after being formed by FCA and PSA group out of France in 2021, and that one of the world leaders in automotive manufacturers, BYD or Changan Auto, may try to buy the DODGE brand, they asked where BYDs are built in the US, and what do the initials stand for?
BYD has a plant in Lancaster, California where they build vehicles, and the name comes from the street it was started on long ago, but perhaps Bettering Yesteryear's Detroit would be appropriate. Back in the 70's when USA makers refused to build small efficient cars, the Japanese started invading. Nowadays they are all over the place and people are indifferent most of the time, but some prefer Japanese cars because of their reputation for reliability. the USA makers are determined not to let this happen again, not by building more competitive vehicles, but politically by high tariffs.

"US car buyers know very little about who owns or where the cars are built" And you're a prime example of that statement.
@@jamesvandamme7786@jamesvandamme7786 I recently retired from the auto industry after living in Michigan and many other states during my many relocations. BYD (Build Your Dreams) started as a battery manufacturer in China before opening a bus manufacturer in Lancaster. They used our EV powertrains on their buses, which were made in Michigan until they sourced from a Chinese vendor. Tariffs will not keep Chinese automakers out of the USA. These Chinese manufacturers are building plants in Mexico, Hungary, Turkey, Netherlands, Brazil, and Thailand. One already has an assembly plant in South Carolina, and another is knocking at the Canadian door. Toyota is considering bringing BYD's hybrid skids, made in China with Toyota engines. The final assembly, which only adds the body, will be Toyota vehicles made in the USA. The only tariff will be roughly $300 on the 40kWH batteries supplied on the hybrid platforms as they drive them off the ships in the LA ports. Most people do not know Buick, Volvo, and Lincoln already sell Chinese-built luxury cars in the USA that meet the USA's 1 for 1 rules, so there are no tariffs.

The Chinese government has long been suspected of hiring as many as 2,000,000 people to surreptitiously insert huge numbers of pseudonymous and other deceptive writings into the stream of real social media posts, as if they were the genuine opinions of ordinary people. Many academics, and most journalists and activists, claim that these so-called “50c party” posts vociferously argue for the government’s side in political and policy debates. As we show, this is also true of the vast majority of posts openly accused on social media of being 50c. Yet, almost no systematic empirical evidence exists for this claim, or, more importantly, for the Chinese regime’s strategic objective in pursuing this activity. In the first large scale empirical analysis of this operation, we show how to identify the secretive authors of these posts, the posts written by them, and their content. We estimate that the government fabricates and posts about 448 million social media comments a year. In contrast to prior claims, we show that the Chinese regime’s strategy is to avoid arguing with skeptics of the party and the government, and to not even discuss controversial issues. We show that the goal of this massive secretive operation is instead to distract the public and change the subject, as most of the these posts involve cheerleading for China, the revolutionary history of the Communist Party, or other symbols of the regime. We discuss how these results fit with what is known about the Chinese censorship program, and suggest how they may change our broader theoretical understanding of “common knowledge” and information control in authoritarian regimes.

In tariff free Australia we have gone from Tesla to BYD Seal because it's a more luxurious and cluttered EV that drives like a better quality car. We love the prospect of going somewhere in it.
About weight, someone said less is more. The Scout appears to be following in the footsteps of the Cyber Truck, what is going on with VW? The quest should not be for self driving cars but for collision avoidance which makes more sense.
You need to develop collision avoidance as part of developing self driving cars. Kind of like how you need to develop wheels to develop cars.

When car makers eventually realized they could not profitably compete in the EV space they retreated to a vehicle that allowed them to utilize more of their existing infrastructure. Then spend millions with ad agencies to convince us that they are the car to buy.

The Chinese government has long been suspected of hiring as many as 2,000,000
people to surreptitiously insert huge numbers of pseudonymous and other deceptive
writings into the stream of real social media posts, as if they were the genuine opinions of ordinary people. Many academics, and most journalists and activists, claim
that these so-called “50c party” posts vociferously argue for the government’s side
in political and policy debates. As we show, this is also true of the vast majority of
posts openly accused on social media of being 50c. Yet, almost no systematic empirical evidence exists for this claim, or, more importantly, for the Chinese regime’s
strategic objective in pursuing this activity. In the first large scale empirical analysis of this operation, we show how to identify the secretive authors of these posts,
the posts written by them, and their content. We estimate that the government fabricates and posts about 448 million social media comments a year. In contrast to prior
claims, we show that the Chinese regime’s strategy is to avoid arguing with skeptics
of the party and the government, and to not even discuss controversial issues. We
show that the goal of this massive secretive operation is instead to distract the public
and change the subject, as most of the these posts involve cheerleading for China,
the revolutionary history of the Communist Party, or other symbols of the regime.
We discuss how these results fit with what is known about the Chinese censorship
program, and suggest how they may change our broader theoretical understanding of
