  • Severn Valley Railway, a series of films covering the railway from top to bottom and everything in between. This film, the magnificent Hampton Loade Station in all its glory.
    Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
    My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

    Thank you Ron for taking me back here again. I recently picked up a copy of a book about the history of this line in a second hand bookshop. It was written by Sir Gerald Nabarro who was both the MP for Kidderminster (and latterly South Worcestershire) and President of the SVR. He was passionate about its restoration. Thank you for pointing out many details that I missed. With Sabrina nearby it makes for a very pretty area. I always love how the shape of the valley funnels the sounds of the trains. Hi Ron, as ever a really enjoyable video. The "Spencer Mineral Waters Bromsgrove" sign on the side of the building took me back to my youth 70 years ago. I lived near Bromsgrove and we got a weekly delivery of two bottles of their pop. It was always lemonade and orangeade . Non of this new fangled cola then! I suspect the sign came from somewhere else as Bromsgrove to Hampton Loade would have been a torturous journey. Seeing the exchange of tablets made me wonder what the signalmans life must have been like during a Salopian winter of yesteryear. Arms held high and rain running down the sleeves. But they were tough then just like their their buildings and trains. Please keep these memory maker videos coming. Regards Mo Johnson

    More happy memories Ron. What a gem Hampton Loade is. And you didn’t have to resist the sales coaches being closed. It was nice to see the coach from Barry Railways and still undergoing work. That has been there many years and gradually restored. Although railways were built for freight, the GWR really looked after their passengers too (not customers) having lit fires in the lovely waiting rooms instead of bus shelters with strange metal planks you are meant to perch on that we see so often now. I don’t know if you have tried out the new Worcester Parkway station but on the London platform there was no shelter at all and it’s quite high above the rest of the station. Not very pleasant on a wet windy day and there was no coffee shop but very posh loos. I wonder what anyone else thinks of it. Luckily I tried it on a nice warm day. Thank you 🌻

    Good morning Ron and thank you for today's video. Hampton Loade is my favourite station on the SVR. The station itself is absolutely charming and couldn't be more representative of a country station back in the day. Even having the original entrance maintained as it would have been and other "outside" attention to detail enhances it even more.
    Regarding heritage railways in general, there is one aspect that I rarely see addressed, and that is the cosmetic condition of the locomotive and rolling stock. On heritage railways they are always presented in immaculate condition with gleaming paint and polished brasswork etc. Now, when I grew up in the steam era, unless you saw a locomotive that had just been outshopped from the works, they were generally grimy and showed, authentically, the effects of the hard working life that they led. So my question is, should we see at least one locomotive in that condition on our heritage railways to give a complete picture of how they used to be? I am just referring to the cosmetic condition here of course; the locomotive would be maintained to the high standard of performance and safety as it is now. In the model railway world where modellers produce exhibition layouts, there are quite often locomotives that are painted to represent an ageing engine in poor cosmetic condition to give that sense of authenticity: I would be interested to here Simon The Hairy Golfer's views on that one. I have raised this question with some of my colleagues on the Pontypool & Blaenavon Heritage Railway where I volunteer. There are mixed feelings but certainly some sympathy with my thoughts on this. So, what do other members of the PW family think? I would be very interested to hear your comments. Would it deter visitors, the lifeblood of the railway, who want to see immaculate engines for example? Could the same thoughts be applied to the quality of the stations which were also far from immaculate at times?
    Thanks again Ron for this week's offering and best wishes to you, Pauline and all of the PW family. Regards, Trev.

    • @ParkinsonsWalks
      @ParkinsonsWalks  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Trev, what a wonderful talking point. I'm with you on this one, you don't often see immaculate locomotives in archive film. I don't think they need to look uncared for, as was the case in the latter days of steam, but 'well used' would do it.
      Hope you are well, take care. Pauline & Ron

      This is an interesting question, some time ago I got a DVD (I think it was a freebie) called "The Glory Days of Steam". It told the story of the big four through to BR and the final days of steam showing how things were back then. It finishes on a high note on a heritage railway saying that today's gleaming examples are truly the glory days of steam.
      I can understand weathering on model railways, there is a video from Chadwick on this right now and each to their own on this one.
      I think a heritage railway needs to keep them shiny and attractive but also make the maintenance areas open and visible as much as possible so people can see how dirty these machines become and the effort required to make them look good.
      That said the coach interiors need to be as clean as possible. There might be a danger in serving British Rail sandwiches to today's public though ........

    • @ngaugeonashelf4417
      @ngaugeonashelf4417 Месяц назад +1

      Hello Trev, indeed locos were grimey especially at the end of steam. They basically gave up looking after them and so many were unmaintained and leaked steam everywhere or were restricted on speed due to loss of boiler pressure and worn out bearings. They ran them into the ground. They weren't that bad in the 30's and further back so if you remember dirty locos it's because they had given up on them.
      As to models people do indeed weather everything in sight with an airbrush. Some are very talented and some not so much. I've seen some stuff on ebay that looked like a 6 inch brush had been used. It's all down to taste and skill I suppose. I don't own an airbrush nor have I ever used one. I'm not going to learn now and destroy an expensive item. So my layout is a preserved one where everything is clean and shiney like it used to be and when the Station Master had a huge amount of power to make sure the brass gleamed! Cheers. Simon

      @@davidberlanny3308 Thanks for your input David. A good compromise between keeping the locomotives pristine and allowing the public to view them when they are being maintained away from the running line. British Rail sandwiches are, despite being super expensive, a lot better than they used to be. Could defo be a retrograde step to offer them the way they used to be though; you can take authenticity a bit too far sometimes...........!

    • @757trev
      @757trev Месяц назад +2

      @@ngaugeonashelf4417 Hi Simon. Yes, what with the run down during the war, the 1950's BR modernisation plan and then Beeching's Re-shaping of British Railways, there was little chance that steam locomotives were ever going to look the way they did before. As an aside, can I say that, as a subscriber, I really enjoy your channel and the piece you did called "I'm Not A Modeller and I Don't Care" was excellent. There are so many people who want to criticise because you don't do things the way the rest of the world wants to do it - you are not conforming to the "norm". Well I'm 100% with you. I'll do what I want thank you very much and if someone doesn't like it they can s** off, because I don't care either. You make an excellent point above, where to try and weather your models without having the expertise or the equipment to do it properly would be destructive, and therefore you have decided to have a layout that reflects a preserved railway. Sounds like common sense to me, which some who criticise seem to be sadly lacking. Gets down off soapbox........

Just as it used to be, back in the day. Quite a stretch for the signalman to exchange the tokens .
