    I really enjoy the concept of this recipe. One suggestion, shred your king oysters, add your seasoning, cover and let sit for an hour, sauté it and the roast. It is a few extra steps but TRUST me it will make a huge difference in taste and texture

      Ooooh yes great tip! I know the extra cooking process will really give it a more meaty texture as it allows it to dry out the moisture.

      Yes….I actually let teh mushroom marinate overnight.. suggestion buttermilk (vegan of course), and your spices… is on point as swell. But yes it makes the difference

    Young lady spiritually you are there. You get it, not many do! I had a youtube channel years ago so the picture of me is much younger. I have been vegan for over 30 years and your food took me back to my very beginning. The Joy I found making it and sharing it. Everything I created was from my spirit. I get the same energy from you.     Wow i just made this today, started process yesterday, its so good, i usually eat 2 plates of rice and pea with oxtails but today i cant its so fulling. i just used my own oxtail sauce like how my mom showed me. My wife doesn't like beans but she liked this veggie oxtails.

    This looks yummy! Vegan here for 5 years!!!!!! I've had oxtail maybe a handful of times growing up, never ate them as an adult, but im going to try this.

    What thaaa??? Ok, Shelley, I've been following you for a while, but vegan oxtails? I was skeptical, but after I watched your video - especially the authentic taste test at the end! - I was sold. This is a pretty advanced recipe for me, but I think I'm going to give it a try! Thanks for always encouraging me to get out of my comfort zone :)

      I knoooow right! It was definitely a "What thaaaa" moment lol. I loved seeing this come together. When I read the recipe I was thinking whew, this is going to be a lot of work. But once we were done, I had enough oxtails to make the recipe 4 times. So I was able to freeze it and pull it out when I wanted oxtails. It's a great make ahead dish, that reduces cooking time on the back end. Let me know how it goes when you make it :)

      Right! The rice paper was a whole surprise. @Korennrachelle showed us how to use rice paper for that texture. She's a wiz at making mock meats from whole foods. You should check out her channel as well. @sisterwomanvegan credited her in the book :)

      NO, SIS, THEY DON'T TAKE OFF THE RICE PAPER. IT KIND OF IMITATES THE TEXTURE OF THAT LAYER OF FAT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE OXTAIL.

    That looks just like Oxtail. I wish I was one of the tasters it looks amazing.
    I will save this one as I am a big Jamaican food fan, I am transitioning to a plant base lifestyle and Jamaican food I will surely miss, but not anymore.

    I’m so happy I found you! I’ve tried to go vegan in the past and couldn’t because so many recipes were using gluten and other foods I’m allergic to. I am getting some oyster mushrooms this week to try out this recipe! It looks so bomb!

      They call that a Lacto ova vegetarian. Most people are that when their plant based. Alot of people confuse vegan with vegetarian.

    I’m sure that after they removed the tails the rest of the cow wasn’t discarded. Lots of roast and ribs and steaks left. They don’t throw that away.

      Of course! A lot of the cow is used for other consumption. I’m just at a point in my journey where I don’t want to consume cows nor their parts at all.

    I just subscribed I'll come across your channel and see this recipe. I am I'm Jamaican and Chinese I love oxtail my family make oxtail ever since I was a little boy. Excited to try your recipe and then when I saw watching your video and you said you was in Jamaican I was really watching a video like for real. It's probably way cheaper than oxtail right now too cuz mushroom much cheaper than oxtail price is it is higher it's high high right now

    Greetings I'm so happy your video popped up. We are Caribbeans and definitely miss oxtails because we're also Muslims. So I will definitely be trying this recipe it looks amazing and I'm so happy that you had your Jamaican friends there to put their input in, so I'm definitely trying the recipe. We are not vegans and there is a market we get our meat from called a Halal Market, the word Halal means religiously allowed, but me personally, I am leaning towards more vegan options 😄🌟🥰🤲🏾🙏🏽

    Great recipe and presentation. I tried it and some of the "voxtails" fell apart while simmering in the pot. This may be because I browned the "voxtails" in carmellized brown sugar like I do with my traditional oxtails. Despite the break down of some of them, they were still very tasty! I think the combination of ingredients in this recipe provides great taste and texture. Thanks for your great presentation.

    Interesting. I have not eaten oxtail for many years now. The last time I was in a Jamaican restaurant I was not eating meat, that was around 4 years ago. I can't eat mushrooms(I'm allergic), but I think my other option would be jackfruit? What do you think(anyone)?
    I would call it oxtail inspired.

      Oh that’s a first! The real thing is delicious…..but since I gave up eating meat, this plant based version is the next best thing. Have you been vegan all your life? Or you just never tried this dish before?

      No I haven’t been vegan all my life. I was vegetarian and pescatarian growing up before going plant-based vegan/ raw vegan for a little over 8 years now. I just never tried them before and a lot of other things I never tried.

And even when I make them raw, the dehydrator eats up all my time. The first time I made raw vegan 8 hour pancakes was the last time lol!

      Hey welcome to the channel. No, I don’t take any supplements at the moment because my body hasn’t given me any indicator that it’s deficient. I think eating a wide range of whole natural foods plant based ingredients helps because when one eats the variety of God’s Garden you generally receive all the nutrients you need. The best way to determine is to have blood work done to find out if you are deficient in anything and base your supplement regimen (if any) on that.

    I'm not vegan, and the recipe looks so interesting that I would like to try making it. I'm in Jamaica so I would have to source the ingredients.

      You should easily be able to find black eye peas and you may find chickpea flour at an Indian market and rice paper at a Chinese market. As far as the mushrooms, if you can’t find that, then try canned jackfruit in brine. It’s not the sweet one but the unripened green one. That can shred like the mushrooms. Hope this helps!

      Thanks! Yep I mention the exact ingredients for the noxtail in the video. As for the sauce I don’t mention them, I just make up my own thing. The entire recipe for noxtail and sauce is linked in the description. The cookbook can be found at the bottom of the description

      Hey David, I wish I could tell you. It was just a vibe....one of the moments where I let my tastebuds and ancestors do the talking and I just listened with a lil bit of this and lil bit of that. Sorry hun! That's typically how I flow in the kitchen though

      I overstand lol! When I first saw Sister Woman Vegan and Koren Rachelle make it, I was in disbelief too. But then I tried it and was transformed. It's now a staple in my home. I make a batch and keep them in my freezer for whenever I want. Let me know how it goes when you do try them!

    I eat 80 percent plant based and 20 percent pescatarian (no egg or dairy) and I never had the chance of trying oxtails. I couldn't justify purchasing it at the price per pound for the amount you get. I use to use a soup bone steak with the oxtail gravy and now it looks like I may be able to use that same gravy on these. I have to give this a try.

      Yep the price of things has changed drastically, back in the day the butchers in the U.S. used to give them away because they didn't eat them. All the Caribbean immigrants were on the come up with oxtails lol. But now, it's definitely pricier. Beyond the financial costs, there are real human and planetary costs (as I'm sure you're aware) and these I can't pay. Thus this recipe does sooooo wonderfully as a substitute. Enjoy it with the gravy and let me know how it works for you! Thanks for sharing :)
