I’m a 56 yo retired FF and life long martial artist. I just had a hip replacement and now using a cane - but that has opened up a new passion for me. Now I’m obsessed with self defense canes and shillelaghs and I really appreciate all the advise and videos 👍🏻
When I started using a cane for mobility issues in the 1990s, I learned Wu Tai Chi for physical therapy. A few years later, I learned the Wu Style Saber long form and applied it to my cane. I have a couple of Cane Masters canes I added during my cancer treatments a couple of years ago. One is a plain oak training cane, and the other simulates a Samurai sword. A complete gray man cane and a fancy one.
4:49 I love the slide and the reverse grip. It generates the type of force you can get by rotating your shoulder, elbow, and wrist. That's a real solid blow without having to telegraph the extension.
Yep just recently ordered one of their dojo canes (hickory octagonal). Canemasters are the gold standard. Have a couple other canes but they are a bit too lightweight. Have a rattan one in the trunk but wanted a heavier duty to train with & carry if needed. ps: and you're too nice with the rubber stopper. 🙂
From the Uk don’t know if you get road rage over in the USA but it’s so great to have a cane in the the car and when you get out to deal with the lunatics you are not bringing a weapon but a walking stick, brilliant.
The scary thing about road rage in the United States is all of the guns. Last year we had two fathers shoot it out with each other and each one shot the others kid who was sitting in the car thankfully neither child died.
@@pasquinilli Just so happy we don’t have guns in the UK because every idiot who has never had a fight in their livers or done any martial arts think they are tough guys. I do appreciate old people need to protect themselves and a gun is a big equaliser but in my opinion probably better without them, anyway who needs a gun when you have a walking stick, brilliant channel.
Older man than you, and much fatter, definitely older got his hips replaced. I work with him at the Grocery. He stands in one place most days all day. He has mentioned many gripes, but I've never heard anything negative regarding his hip replacement. He speaks to many people who are older. They can even do hip replacements in dogs. My sister had her dogs hips replaced. I was amazed. You're in the best shape I ever saw, or heard of. I wouldn't, on a lark, just go and get my hips replaced. It's not a dental cleaning, but they have gotten good at it.
My wife is almost at the age where she's vulnerable to attack. I also work with geriatrics. This information can be very helpful to a lot of our population
I have an aluminum cane from Cold Steel. Doesn't have the nifty edges of the cane master sticks, but the hardness helps when targeting joints and long bones. Still fixin' to get a canemaster, though. Thanks for all you do!
Whats your opinion on the United Cutlery cane? It's the only defence leaning cane sold in the UK and it being polypropylene will be hardy for wet weather whi h we have a lot of here
Matt, can you do an video for spinning and defending with a Derby cane to be able to see the similarities and differences compared to other canes and sticks?
Do you have any thoughts on using paired Nordic walking sticks for self defence? If they're too long for sinawali, if the hand straps are a risk for getting trapped, if you're better off dropping one and using the other with both hands?
Sir have you any video on how to use a cane or walking stick on stray dogs? While on an evening walk I was recently attacked by a german shepherd mix dog I got away with just torn pants thank goodness. Thanks AJ
Hi matt I know you're a very busy man I really enjoy watching you from the u k and your very excellent videos there's one thing I'd like to see and that's if you could write a walking stick martial arts book I just know with all your first class knowledge and fighting skills in your videos I know that your book will be the first book of choice and would soon be a top best seller
Thank you so much for answering my question of writing a walking stick self defense book I really appreciate that your always the first martial artist that I watch and can learn from as you really say it like it is with your common sense approach I'm looking forward to seeing the book I know that you work so hard with your excellent first class videos I still think it will be a best seller thank once again
Hi Sensei Matt as you know the crime rate is increasing I carry my cane but am not really trained to use it my question to you is I already have a second degree black belt in ninjas turn I am also an asssistant instructor I got a question for you do you think if I were to take a fencing class I mean I did here somebody one say that a cane might be used as a sword so my question to you is do you think if I signored up for a fencing class as previously stated or I'd I did not say there is a lot of crime do you think if I take a fencing class it would help me learn to use a cane as an effective self defense tool thoughts please thank you
Absolutely yes. Fencing is amazing for self defense overall for so many reasons. Quick thinking, targeting strikes, accuracy, fitness, strength, endurance. So many great things!
Hey Matt, what size cane would you recommend for a 70 y/o woman with very small hands? I also have a much weaker grip since contracting c-virus twice. I agree with you on the hickory cane and I need to buy one anyway for my balance struggles. I might as well get one that will serve me well in all areas.
@@pasquinilli he required me to be able to demonstrate basic swings. Horizontal, diagonal, and vertical strikes using the horn end. Have the ability to aggressively strike close in. How to defend myself while sitting in a chair. How to defend myself against multiple attackers.
Hahahaha. I just keep watching the news these days and the attacks on innocent people are exploding and pretty horrific. I often change the titles several times looking for the best fit. What would you think would be a good title?

If Abel had a cane, maybe Cain might not have killed Abel! Lol!
Please: monkey fist tutorial. Thanks!
Hi Matt, can I get you to send me your criteria to be approved by you as a Cane Master?
What did Gary have you show him to get your Black Belt in cane? I’m sure it’s a lot of the same things?

Matt, you're great but every video doesn't need to include "may save your life." Just a thought.
