I'm still scratching my head as to why Sega would make a demo of Sega GT/Scud Race for the Dreamcast yet not release it. Even in '99 the game still looked amazing.
@@dan_perry I've heard rumors that they actually couldn't get Scud Race working to the standard they wanted on DC. There's been a lot of back and forth on whether Naomi was actually more powerful than Model 3 or not. I want a Scud Race port so bad but until then the unlockable tracks in OutRun 2 Xbox will have to do.
I loved the way they lured you in to playing the game with gameplay or cinematic polygon based video. Hooked me nearly every time. Awesome video as usual 👍
Attract modes are what got me into arcades as a kid, would love to see more videos like this (I know you are sega lord, but namco and midway had some great attract modes as well)!
Well, they can't do anything about the licensed games. As far as their other games, probably a number of reasons. They don't see a market for them. There are certainly better games (today) than these shown, and they don't want to spend money to port these old games.
Its just a matter of money. If Sega feels they can make more money by selling the 143rd Sonic/Mega Drive compilation , that is what they are going to do.
@Daishin no Dōro I've only played a few of these arcade games in an actual arcade back in the late 90's (Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter, VOOT), and some of them I haven't even heard of (Emergency Call Ambulance). I've heard and seen some of the other Sega games (LA Riders, The Lost World), but I'm not a hardcore Sega arcade fan. I've mostly played games on a home console. How about yourself? You played any of them?
@Daishin no Dōro I think when they said "there are better games today" I assume they meant as in there are better IPs for SEGA to rince to make money off today rather than make another "fanboy of yesteryears" compilation with games that let's be honest a lot of people today wouldn't have known existed. So although these games may have or may still be good to play, are they worth the time to properly port over to a modern console? Who would actually buy it? And would it be worth it. The reason they do the genesis collection every 3 months is because everyone knows of those games and people still want to play them. You may get a hidden gem in there and that's great. Basically the arcade games that people.cared about home ports for have been done. Sure some of these would be nice but even I can see not a lot of money can be made from it, as it's a very niche market.
Gunblade NY and LA Machineguns are on the list for my next Wii game for sure. Kim Justice has some recent material if anyone is interested in watching more great SEGA arcade content.
I remember the VF3 attract mode like it was yesterday and its been about 22 years. But I owned a Saturn and loved VF2 and remember seeing my fav char Sarah Bryant fighting in the beach, and was absolutely blown away. To this day I still want to play VF3 and still havent been able to!
Sega lord im so happy for ur content dude i just turned 41 and the mall we used to have when i was around 12 or 13 had a 1.50 movie if anyone remembers those it had the best arcade games 2 arcades one in the lower floor and the better one on the top floor inside the food court dude u make me feel happy i loved the early 90s arcade games
I didn't even know half of these existed! I really wanna try Spike Out and Fighting Vipers 2. Sega, THIS is the stuff that you need to be releasing on the SEGA AGES line!
The model 3 was such a beast, even high end PCs with 3Dfx accelerator cards couldn't compete at the time. And Scud Race is incredible. Unfortunately it is very licence heavy (Ferrarri, Porsche, Dodge, Lamborghini...), which makes it difficult to port now.
Top notch material as always. I really appreciate your take on this sega arcade games, we have many videos showing their gameplay but not so many with the information and background of this ones. Please keep making this arcade videos!
My favorite, which is not a Sega cabinet but a Namco that would appear on Dreamcast, is Soul Calibur. The attract mode had those weapon demonstrations by Kilik and Ivy.
I too remember wandering the arcades while on holiday.given just a few ££ to spend so spent lots of took me just watching and listening to the machine's one, when I saw dragons lair for the 1st time i must of watched it 20mins non stop playing over and over
The choices and presentation here is really well done Sega Lord. Scud Race enthralled me, Ocean Hunter scared me, Fighting Vipers entertained me, Emergency Ambulance frightened me.
I thought I was one of only few people who appreciate the attract modes in retro arcade games, especially SEGA games. SEGA really knew how to make a good attract mode, and their stuff from the 90's and early 2000's is especially good. I can't quite pinpoint what exactly is so mesmerizing about it... Great video!
It's been 24 years and even today Scude Race and Daytona 2 are my dreams of being reproduced in a domestic version, I thought I'd see them on Dreamcast, but that didn't happen and even today I hope Sega will make a collection of Model 3
I remember always watching the attract mode of Daytona USA because I wanted to see the statue of sonic and also watching Dynamite cop attack mode to see what buttons to press during the quick time events becomes i didn't speak English so I didn't knew what punch kick and jump ment
My main memory of the 80s/early 90s was attract modes. We didnt have a local arcade so it would always be when we went to the seaside, my mum and dad would give me a couple of pounds and I would walk around endlessly watching and listing to the fireworks. Fantastic video !
Many memories of standing and looking at all the SEGA arcade cabinets as a kid. I never played them too much, with the exception of Daytona USA, but loved to see them in motion.
And original Xbox, the system was pretty much Dreamcast 2 and much more powerful then the Dreamcast. It would have been the perfect system to show these arcade games in full glory.
I saw that harley davidson unit once and instead of renting a game for a week I got to toss 20 into it ...never saw it again and never regretted the 20 that bike looked amazing and I dont know if it was brand new or had super spot on sensors but it was just amazing
I still remember the first time I laid my eyes upon Sega Super GT (Scud Race) and was absolutely mesmerized. It wasn't Japanese only. I saw it here at a few arcades in Wisconsin. That game and Killer Instinct had me just staring at the screen during the attract mode when the quarters ran out.
I worked at a game store around the time Dreamcast was launched. We not only had two Consoles under the counter wired up to TVs but also an actual Sega Display unit. There was Soul Calibur looping all day, Sega Rally and Sonic Adventure. Amazing intros on all three games, had them memorised. But try hearing them hundreds of times per day.
Some great games showcased here. I got to play HD& LA Riders a handful of times on the big full motorcycle cab, what a fun experience. SEGA Super GT was the most common Model 3 games I saw and I'd never pass up a chance to play it. I was disappointed in the extremis that it never showed up on DC or Xbox! Thanks for the show!
Every time you think this man get out of content, he slaps into your Face with some great new ideas for more interesting retro game episodes. Great work man.
Out of all those Model 3 games, I've spent the most time with The Ocean Hunter and beat it twice in the arcades. Its one of my standout memories of my time in university, spending downtime in between classes at the nearby mall and putting in tokens into the machine. Sure brings me back to the good ol days and I'm glad it finally got mentioned in a video.
I was born in the early 80s and this year I said to myself I am going to obtain every arcade game I played as a child or didn't get to play. I was a Sega kid growing up and I loved Sega Model 1, 2 and 3 games. It took weeks and months but I finally got everything up and running. I am so gutted and disappointed however that I haven't been able to get Sega Model 3 games to run like at all on the Raspberry Pi4
I remember the lost world attract mode well. The cab was a little jeep with curtains. The cab had some really loud bassy speakers, you'd hear the t rex footsteps booming through the arcade and you'd have to peep behind the curtains to see what was going on.
Model 3 games always melted my brain as a kid. Knowing how much hardware was insider that cabinet still boggles me to this day. I own a Model2 at home now, and it's a beast. I still have issues powering it properly. My dream is to build a multi-model2/3 Sega driving cabinet.
You and i are very much alike x, i would go to the arcades and stand there watching the attract cinemas when i didnt have any money. The very first arcade game i ever played was Roc n' Rope, still a favorite of mine to this day. The sega astro mini is a step in the right direction though, lets hope sega releases these games in the future. I loved scud race to btw, it was rare that i got to play it unfortunately. We need a home release for this!
Dear Sega, You have the most robust back catalog of unreleased games and classics. We'd be happy to buy a compilation of them for $30+ if you were to release them. Sega - Releases Sonic Spinball, Columns, and Game Gear Mini Fuck me... Being a Sega fan is like being in an abusive relationship, hopelessly thinking the beatings and torment will end.
Beefy, solid-looking 3d models. Enough detail to keep your attention but not so much it became a mess of polygons. Bright crisp textures. Buttery smooth and consistent frame rates. All these things made these games real eye-catchers. Along with big screens, beautiful cabinets and the volume cranked up this is the sort of thing that created the unique arcade vibe. A lot of it translated very well to the Dreamcast. It's what still makes it one of my most favourite eras of games to look at. The graphics haven't lost their charm unlike many games on other systems of the generation. I'd say the closest to having such a consistent vision and design back then were the first-party games on the Gamecube.
One can never forget how jaw-dropping the opening of DUSA2 Battle ont he edge was. With the beautiful forest dome and the energetic music. Power Edition's attract screen couldn't come close.
*ALL* these games seriously need a remastered edition on current gen consoles. SEGA is missing out on the massive potential of these golden oldies. The SEGA of today is such a letdown.. 😕
It's hard to explain just how amazing the model 3 games looked to people at the time. It was pre-render cinema quality art work in real time right in front of your eyes for .50cents. It was graphics you dreamed about and joked about right in front of your eyes.
Great video! I really hope, that one day, everyone can treasure these games at home! Btw. Never heared of Ocean Hunter before! I love the concept! Thanks for showing it!
Emergency Ambulance and 18 Wheeler were my favs of this era. The larger vehicle physics seemed next gen, something different than before. Glady put in my quarters!
There were always 3 sounds you heard when in an arcade, " Daaaayyytooonaaaaaaaa" and "Moonwalker!" And then the Mad Dog Macree intro with that girl talking.
Daytona 2 also helpfully showed you the simpler powerslide mechanics, at least on the cabs I saw (large sit-down cabs in a UK arcade). Though that arcade had a lot of imports I wouldn't recognise until later, like Brave Firefighters, Tsurugi, and Code Veronica. Also it's nice to see how well Supermodel's come on.
You're right. A good attract mode could be mesmerizing and enjoyable. And Sega's were very good at this point. Model 3 demos were impressive to see. I remember seeing the Star Wars Trilogy machine in a movie theater in 1999 when I went to see Star Wars Episode One. It was very cool to see in action. I seem to recall they had a Sega Ski Super G as well. Watching that attract mode for the Abulance games, and seeing how crazy the driving is, I think they're going to have to call another ambulance for the pedestrians that get hit by the first one.
Sega Lord you really amaze me... you will be the only person I can think of would actually make a video about the attract mode..... You literally make original content original.... I don't think I would ever see anything like this on other RUclipsrs because they would put the same original content that everybody else puts with the same characters and videos..... They should be giving you best original content award.....
Supermodel author here. Great video! Sega did once approach me about doing Model 3 ports for Xbox 360 but then inexplicably went radio silent. I suspect that licensing issues make it impossible to re-release most of these games, including Daytona 2 and Scud Race. Also, these games occupy an awkward spot in gaming history. While technically brilliant for their time, they were firmly rooted in an arcade tradition that was rapidly becoming obsolete. They were generally far too short. Re: emulation fidelity, Supermodel has issues with a few games, and audio and timing remain problematic. But in the latest source code versions, using the new graphics engine and quad rendering mode, graphical accuracy is nearly 100%. There are very few remaining issues thanks to the tremendous work by Ian Curtis and others.
The attract mode to Spikeout: Final Edition is hilarious. Four times, bad guys decide to just jump-kick into these rooms _hoping_ the heroes will be on the other side and they can score a free knock-out, and *all four times,* they are _totally wrong_ and they're all the way on the other side of the rooms, lmao. They're just turning to the guy busting into their room like, "...what!?" That has got to be awkward XD I love it. These are *all* great and arcade design at it's finest (be bright, be flashy, be _big,_ and convince people to be interested in playing you AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE because they'll just walk past you in a few seconds otherwise), and that's design you don't see much of nowadays. Hell, with "AAA" publishers shifting more and more to boring "narrative focused" crap, I doubt a lot of studios even COULD make something that looks instantly fun like these anymore. But man, while looking at all of these was fantastic, the story Spikeout was telling was just so funny to me. That's the best. They might not have been successful, but ya gotta admire the gusto those henchmen showed to jump-kick into rooms like that!
sega rally 2 was a looker on my pc. i had a voodoo2 and it looked... well like it looks in this video. sorta. at least i remember it looking exactly like this.
Thinking back in time, Sega was absolutely killing it with Model 2 and Model 3 arcade hardware. For their time, they were state-of-the-art hardware. They only problem was that they were arcade boards, and there was not equivalent home console to receive some nice ports. Even their biggest competitor/rival in the arcade scene at that time, Namco, couldn't compete with them. Namco and Sega used to have a great variety of arcade games' portfolio back in that time, but Sega always had the most powerful hardware with eye-popping graphics. Things somehow balanced out with the case of Dreamcast + Naomi duo, where a home console and an arcade hardware came the closest ever to each other. Of course, Namco followed suit with PS2 and System 246.
Nice🤗I like those demostration of a videogame as well.Remember when I saw the “Dreamcast”for the first time Showing a demostration of Crazy Taxy with a Driver with a Green Mohawk (funny😂).Also somebody was playing a “Street fighter”game using “Ken”and keep kicking his enemy in the Air, Higher and Higher completely from the screen! But it kept on going what the empty playfield and sound indicated(talking about Crazy!)Have a Nice day dude
Just like you, as a kid, when you didn't have the money, i used to just sometimes sit in the arcade seat or stand by and and watch all these awesome intros and even pretend to play them. Daytona, House of the Dead, Sega Rally, whatever, many of those intros and demos were awesome. Great idea for a video.
This video is great on so many levels. The idea is great, so are the games.... I remember VF3 attraction screens at the arcade)))) however, it was Soul Blade for me)
Another great video! I'd love to see more Arcade Treasures or coverage on obscure japanese titles. I recently got reminded of Kabuki Klash! Maybe 80s/90s arcade games that came from anime we might not know about???
Lol yup!!! This was me back in the day. I first saw attract screens not on a M3 but rather an M1 at innoventions Epcot courtesy of a larger-than-life Virtua fighter 1 machine! 👊💥🇺🇸. Awesome.
Virtua Fighter attract mode got me into arcade games...normally I'd spend my money / tokens on games of chance...until I saw that machine and would dump every penny I had into it.
I remember that virtual fighter 3 graphics technically could not be bared by a home system of its time,VF 3 was the first game that gave us the first very good example for how the next gen of 3D fighting games would also look!
SLX you are the man. I was thinking about how I used to do the same. Not only that, but when my meager pocket money ran out I used to pretend I was playing the game during these "demos". That's until the arcade owner would chase my broke ass out of the arcade.
If you go into the operator menu for Scud Race Plus and change the region to USA, the game becomes Sega Super GT Plus. Sounds like they had plans to release it internationally.
Damn you Sega! What are doing releasing micro Game Gears that nobody wants? All of these arcade games showcased by Sega Lord X need a home release right now! Make. It. Happen. Now!
I was a rather poor kid back in the day, and spent most of my time in the arcades watching others play or the attract modes, and thus the latter are a big part of me growing up as a gamer.
Honestly when you see the model 3 games like this, you realise just how many games should have been either launch or immediate titles on dreamcast.

Bart, thank you for your contributions.
Love the attract screens for Super GT and Daytona 2
How good was it when you where in a arcade n u saw a machine saying press start and no one was around
Great videos and presentation as always.
They're just turning to the guy busting into their room like, "...what!?" That has got to be awkward XD
I love it.
15:19 Spike with his son hanging on for dear life while he's training & beating up the enemies.
Watched this video twice. Straight after the first time. I miss the arcade.
sega rally 2 was a looker on my pc. i had a voodoo2 and it looked... well like it looks in this video. sorta.
at least i remember it looking exactly like this.
Wow Ocean Hunter! That brings me back. I went on a Disney cruise ship and that was on the boat. Played it everyday that week.
I love LA Machineguns. 😍I play it all the time on the Wii. If I could EVER score an arcade cabinet, that would be the one.
👊💥🇺🇸. Awesome.
surprised these games still can't be fully emulated 20 years later :/
Sega Lord X shows me a bunch of crazy racing games; RUclips ads show me a commercial about funding road repair work. I feel targeted.
great idea
Loved the episode
I am a huge fan of M2, M3, Atomiswave, Naomi, and Naomi 2, great games, great graphics, and great attract modes.
If you go into the operator menu for Scud Race Plus and change the region to USA, the game becomes Sega Super GT Plus. Sounds like they had plans to release it internationally.
I think Sega should really employ you! Great content. I love your channel! Please keep up the good work SLX. 👍
Damn you Sega! What are doing releasing micro Game Gears that nobody wants? All of these arcade games showcased by Sega Lord X need a home release right now! Make. It. Happen. Now!
I love those Sega racing games!! I don't think we have something similar nowadays.
Best mech designs indeed! Expect nothing less from famed Gundam Mech designer Hajime Katoki!
Thanks for this, from my point of view i think i missed these machines. As soon as I played the first Tomb Raider I left the arcade.
I have never heard of Emergency Call Ambulance before, but it looks like the kind of arcade game that I would instantly be drawn to.
I was a rather poor kid back in the day, and spent most of my time in the arcades watching others play or the attract modes, and thus the latter are a big part of me growing up as a gamer.
2012 a roller rink had a Super GT cab. It was fantastic.
It Breaks my Heart to see all that cool games never Released outside of the Arcade...
