Who Lives In a HAUNTED House Like This? The Fascinating Hidden Gem Aston Hall

- Hello! Regular viewers do not fear, this hasn't become "most haunted" I thought it would be fun at the end of October to focus on a house with a spooky reputation - but of course I will be sticking to the facts (and the scariest thing about this house was not it's previous residents or any spirit!)
Aston Hall in Birmingham is the last of the great Jacobean Mansions, and is said to be one of the most haunted properties in the United Kingdom. A real hidden gem, hiding in plain sight in one of the most built up areas of Birmingham it has sat here quietly since 1618 and is packed with human stories. From a murderous creator, a visit from a King and disgusting a Queen I was absolutely drawn in by how wonderful this place is. It was probably the most fun I've ever had researching for a film too because it was all so new to me and just kept throwing up one fascinating thing after another.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did making it. I am Lucy, social historian and all round nosey parker. I love to take you somewhere interesting on my journeys. I film, edit, script and research all my films and absolutely love doing it! Please join me and my amazing community of history lovers in the comments by dropping by and saying hello or subscribing for much more - you are so appreciated!

Hello Lucy
I live in Australia now . I was born in Erdington and grew up in Great Barr and Aldridge
A Villa fan from afar ( 4 generations) You could hear the crowd from my grandparents house
I first visited Aston Hall as a twelve year old by candlelight with my late parents .
For my parents it was just a visit but for me it was far more as it ignited my lifelong passion for history
I had the overwhelming feeling I had been in there before. Rooms seemed familiar as did the people in the portraits and particularly the clothing of the period. I have always been drawn to the Stuarts and many historical books have been given me for gifts
How could We have ever executed a King
My late wife actually wanted me to be regressed.
I think those of us who have this undeniable passion for history may have lived past lives
It was good to refresh everything about the hall and I’m looking forward to checking out your other work
One tiny error I picked up on was that King Charles left for Edgehill not Edgewater
Keep up the good work
Im a fan already❤🌎
Yes I agree. Funnily enough I also felt a connection to this place.
This is so amazing, I had the same connection at a place called Baddesley Clinton, I already did a video about it, some place just get you .. and like you started a life long history obsession! I fell in love with Aston Hall a few weeks ago too. My LIFELONG obsession has been Anne Boleyn and her retribution really. There's been some incredible research and finds lately not only into her trial but also her possessions. I've always been drawn to people I feel have been treated unfairly, not just Kings & Queens but anyone in society. You sound like a true empath like myself! I will check out of the Edgewater error - that's not like me! I have never heard of Edgewater! Finger must have slipped! Lovely to connect with you x
Just remembered, Villa Park was originally called Aston lower grounds and officially it is still it's name, it was a sports ground which was part of the Victorian amusement park built in the former grounds of Aston Hall. The name Villa park was the informal name the clubs supporters used for the venue, the name was never recorded as being formally changed as it never was, before villa moved in there used to be a menagerie (which was more like a small zoo), A public Aquarium (which became incorporated into the main stand, An ornamental pool called the Dovehouse pool (which was where the pitch now sits), A great hall for concerts with dining facilities, An indoor skating rink, A racecourse, 2 bowling greens, The Athletics/Bicycle track built as part of this complex used to surround the original football pitch.
This is brilliant! And makes a lot of the sources I was reading about Aston park come to life! I'm a bit rubbish in that I know nothing about football but I come from a "villa family" so I'll tell some of them this see if they know this was taking place where they stand on a Saturday afternoon!
Wow that’s incredible 👏👏
An Amazing house beautiful ceilings and well everything. Loved the long gallery.
Gorgeous isn't it ! The long gallery took my breath away, when I was editing it made me laugh as I actually heard myself give a "wow" intake of breath!
Hello Lucy, thank you so much for taking us to Aston Hall with you and for keeping your promise of visiting a spooky place for Halloween. I loved the house and your narrative. Your recording, erased, so mysteriously.... Perhaps you were not alone in the house... We have here in Montevideo our little haunted museum at an old rich family's house. A rebellious girl was kept many years at the tower; every time her portrait was not exhibited, something happened to the building and now it's hung permanently just a the entrance. Happy Halloween!!!
It was so strange as im so fussy about my footage, checking and backing it up, it was all there when i got in the car and I felt like I was losing my mind when I couldn't find it! That place sounds amazing, and it's so ruddy sad how many women throughout history have been locked up for being in love ...
First! Your hair is Gorgeous!! ...then I must say..this is one of your best videos.. Love the history.and Love the way you presented it....
Thank you! I am quite proud of this one to be honest, I was really really inspired by it and I think it shows when you love something. My hair is a pain to be honest! Falling out in handfuls at the moment .. it's my age .. at least I have plenty 🤪
That long gallery is amazing! I love original, untouched places like this. How sad no one else was visiting!
It's incredible isn't it? Yes, I was so shocked, I've been to far less interesting places that are absolutely packed!
Hi Lucy - that was excellent. What a beautiful House and so full of history. I have seen about Aston Hall, and knew the story of the cannon ball damaged staircase - amazing. Sad tales of murder and suicide though, but not uncommon of the time I suspect. As you said - not a homely house, but with so many stories to tell. Thanks for taking us there Lucy - always fun to accompany you wherever you go. Take special care 🙂
Thank you for always coming with me! I absolutely loved this one. Everything I thought I knew about Aston Hall was totally wrong! Apparently Mom took me there to a candlelit evening when I was a kid but I don't remember it - strange for me! :)
I've only recently found yoyr channel, but ive already watched so many videos! Really love your style of story telling. You said on one video that you used to be a history teacher. It explains why I like you so much, you remind me of my favourite history teacher haha! Sorry you lost that footage, but the rest is ace. I would love a little tour of your desk area that you briefly showed! Looks very cute
Awe thanks! That's so kind of you! I can't really account for the desk area - it's my husbands office and he collects vintage gaming stuff - it is really nice there though!
I’m looking forward to revisiting Aston Hall with you. I first visited when I was 16. Loved it then and still do. It used to be surrounded by lots of land and it is a shame that everywhere is so built up. I never picked up on any bad vibes each time I went. I’m so glad it is still there to be visited. I like the long gallery, beautiful hung staircase and many good paintings. It brings back so many memories for me. I didn’t know about the kitchen murder though and Dick’s garrett was never mentioned either. A few tragedies all round. New to me that Victoria visited too. It was lovely to see the toys in the attic rooms. I got the same chills seeing the long gallery for the first time. Imagine floating along in your voluminous gowns to exercise when the weather was too inclement to go outside. There used to be a lovely little cafe just off the kitchens but that closed sadly. It used to be a pleasant journey to get there, but it now leaves a lot to be desired. Thanks so much for the memories. 😊
I was thinking about how when it was built it was in the middle of countryside and now it's in the middle of the city! I'm amazed it never got knocked down for housing - but shows how important a building it is! I learnt so much about it that I didn't know, it was a joyful time doing the research and I don't think I've finished... and yes the cafe has sadly gone now!
Lovely autumn day for a visit to Aston Hall. As you say ,a hidden gem in Birmingham . I went once ,probably 1970’s to a candlelit Aston Hall evening, now ,that was magical ! Travelling through the rather run down areas of the City and then entering the historical pre industrial Aston Hall lit by candlelight , never to be forgotten! Thank you for providing opportunity to revisit and more of the history of the hall .
You are so welcome! I did ask them why they didn't do the candlelight anymore -because it was really popular wasn't it? (I remember my Mom always trying to get tickets but it was sold out) and it's a conservation issue, there were so many people attending the floor was starting to warp, and of course the threat of fire. I suggested they do it with fake candles .. selfishly because I would love to go!
Superb video as ever, Lucy! Because of you, I shall certainly visit Aston Hall. I hadn't heard of it - so thank you for bringing my attention to it. 🙏🏻
Please do .. you will love it! Take a flask and take it all in - it only has quite short opening hours, Friday - Sunday I think so check before you go - they also do great special tours that they advertise on the website too, they sell out quickly!
Amazing place - thank you so much for showing us around. Without your videos I wouldn't see such interesting places so thank you. It might be blowing in the wind but your hair looks gorgeous. Please keep visiting and recording such interesting places.
Hahah, thank you, love / hate relationship with my hair! I will do, I love it, I have such a long list it's going to take me a really long time so hopefully everyone won't have got bored by then!
It's astonishing isn't it that you were the only visitor that day, and such a beautiful day too. What a fantastic place, especially the Long Gallery, and all that plaster work was gorgeous 😍 I just don't know why there isn't a coffee shop, maybe some picnic tables, just anything really to encourage people to visit. Thank you Lucy sharing this hidden gem with us all 🥰
Looks beautiful place to visit Lucy. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👻🎃🍂
Very welcome! It's amazing! Glad you enjoyed the video x
Thank you so much Lucy, not only for taking us to such interesting places in every video you make, but also for all the research you do to bring these places to life through your wonderful storytelling! I wish I lived nearer, as there seem to be so many fascinating places in and around Birmingham. The long gallery was my favourite and all the plasterwork was amazing.
Birmingham has so much ... but as a city we have always been rubbish at shouting about how many nice things are here! So glad you enjoyed this little hidden gem, it really is an amazing place and I'm pretty happy with the video this week :)
What a collection of overwhelming stories ! And your exquisite narrative! This was awesome, Lucy❤
Thanks Maria, I enjoyed this one a LOT - I love it when I go somewhere that I feel very neutral about then come out absolutely buzzing - Aston Hall certainly did that!
Your well-researched commentary really shines! Thank you, again.
Thanks Gina, I really enjoyed the whole process of this video I was really deep into the research, I never take for granted how lucky I am to be able to do this! X
This was so interesting. I think I`ll be visiting Here really soon. Thank you for sharing and being so lovely.
You will love it - there's 30 rooms in total which would have made a very long video so there's loads more to discover x
Thank you, Lucy. I knew of Aston Hall, but have never been there. What a gorgeous place! I agree it doesn't look exactly homely, warm, and comfy, but from your video there's something about it that looks welcoming, and actually like somewhere that you could actually live in pretty happily. And I always love a good long gallery!
That long gallery took my breath away, it's why I try not to google places before I go so I can come away with an authentic first impression - Aston Hall exceeded my expectations by miles!
Grew up in Erdington, so used to visit Aston Hall most summers (Entrance used to be Free). Havn't been for about a decade when I took my in laws for a visit when they were up from London for week, they loved it. I also used to go to the park for lunch regularly when I worked in Witton. Thanks for bringing back some memories. They also used to have a nice coffee shop in the old stables last time I went, guess it fell victim to the criminally low visitor numbers.
Criminally low is the word,'can't believe I was the only person there! I've been to far less interesting places that have been busy. Yep, the cafe has gone which is a real shame! Not free anymore unfortunately but it was half price with my national trust card, I hope it gets the notoriety it deserves one day!
What a fantastic little (huge) hidden gem. It looks untouched from the 1600’s. Thank you Lucy for showing us this place.
Very welcome! And thanks your your encouragement I got a drone! Passed the exam on the weekend and got all my IDs! Can't wait to get flying :)
@@throughlucyslens Blimey what have you bought? 😁
Only a DJI neo - basic and simple.
Not crashed it yet 😂
@@throughlucyslens Only ??!!! I’ve watched lots of reviews on them and they’re a fantastic little thing. I didn’t think you need a license though as they’re sub 250 grams. Enjoy flying 😁
The info online was really wishy washy so I thought it was better off to get one just in case .. made me feel fancy for £11 ! It is brilliant, it was chasing my nephew around the garden today like a manic wasp!
Oh, my! I mean, thank you, when do we move in? 😍 Lordy, that plaster work was stupendous! I was watching a UK restoration show a few years ago and the stonemason said they get paid less than a brickies labourer, I was wondering if the plasterers would be in a similar vein - fabulous work for a tiny pittance? That was a gorgeous bit of eye candy for the soul, thank you!
Very welcome! I'm not sure on the plasterers wages, I know nowadays plastering can be a lucrative trade - and there are also shortages of skilled people to do it .. I have no idea how they went up there doing those ceilings but it wouldn't surprise me if it was a low paid trade - I'll have to look into it!
Thank you Lucy enjoyed this. A great one for Halloween ❤
Thanks Dawn & Dave, not as good as your awesome song though! ❤️
Hi Lucy, what an amazing place. You bring it to life. I loved the plasterwork and the plates in the kitchen with details of servants caught my attention. 😊
It's great isn't it? I'm always really pleased to see a good "below stairs" area and i think they have done a grand job here x
What a fun tour. So much varied history. Thanks for doing all of that research and sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it! I had the most fun doing the research for this one I could have gone on for weeks and weeks!
What a place, Lucy. From the moment I saw the first picture of Ason Hall I had goosebumps. The clock in here was ticking as usual but the volume of it definitely increased. I felt something was glad you were showing us that remarkable place. I love what you said about the woman Elizabeth, in the picture. What a woman!! So weird that some footage was lost. We know there are more things at work. I love your descriptive language in your videos. Really gives a sense that I am there too.
I don’t do Halloween either but have a great week and look forward to your next visit. Thanks again xx
There is a feeling there, I couldn't put my finger on it at all! I am so careful with my
Footage, I'm the type of person who back ups my back ups so really did my head in .. and annoyed me! Has never happened before. It's a brilliant place and so interesting! Glad I finally got there :)
You've done it again love it. The workmanship is again truely magnificent. The skills of the artisans and builders always leave me gobsmacked in buildings such as this. I wonder how the 4th husband of Elizabeth fared. I'm going to look her up lol. Glad I wasn't around in the very early years. Take care =-)
Isn't she great? I love a good character .. and like you I felt I needed to know about her, it was so unusual for a woman to be written about our recorded in such detail so she must have been quite the character!
Lucy, bloody marvelous!! Ive never been there either, will be making a point of going now. Hope all is well with you and the ribs have healed well. Helen xx
They are okay!!! I am at the point where I forget about it until I've turned over in the night and lay on them and OUCH. Much better though! Thank you x
This was amazing Lucy, the plaster work is brilliant & it’s unreal to think King Charles I saw it & dinned under it. I really loved the wooden floors, so authentic! That woman who thrashed her husband for being a non royalist was hysterical, makes a nice change 😂😂 Thanks Lucy another fascinating video 👏👏👏🇳🇿
Thanks Heather, yes Elizabeth is a woman I would like to know !!! I am really quite fond of Charles I - on a human level, you can't even imagine the rollercoaster of growing up thinking you were gods anointed human on earth to the executioners block - and I think about his family .. it's just so absolutely horrible really! And I was so chuffed to be in that room where he once was.
Fantastic Lucy! We would love to see this place if only we lived in UK! LOVE your channel. ~Adam and Mary in a 250 year old house in New Hampshire, USA
Thank you both! I bet the leaves are turning beautifully around your home at the moment!
Superb presentation, Lucy - I thoroughly enjoyed today's tour. If I lived closer to Birmingham, I would definitely visit Aston Hall. I thought I spotted an odd light anomaly at 20:25, on the left - it has an almost human form, but I'm sure it's easily explained, just a reflection... 👻😄 Happy Halloween!
😂😂 haha the ghost of Lucy Scott in broad daylight .. she is such a show off! Thanks so much, it's a fab place and I really fell in love with it!
Fascinating video, Lucy! I’m so glad that you have featured it on your channel so that the world at large can see the magnificence of Aston Hall. I have been several times which included two candlelight events in the early 2000s!
I wish they still did the candlelight evenings. My mom said she took me in the 80s but I don't remember and I could kick myself! They can't do them anymore 🥹. Aston Hall is amazing and I'm always so confused why it's so under-visited, us Brummies need to get better at shouting about how good we are ❤️
What a marvellous place in the middle of Brum! Very interesting as always, thank you!
You would never expect to see in there would you? Amazing place!
@throughlucyslens oh I meant also to say I hope your ribs are feeling better now!
They are! Still achy in the morning but that's possibly the aging process :)
Yet again a very interesting and compelling video! ❤ And the gallery reminded me of the haunted gallery at Hampton Court Palace. Not in style but the (his)story behind it (rich, powerful men who apparently 'get away with murder').
Yes!! I love the gallery at Hampton Court, you can't not imagine Catherine Howard running for her life to get the Kings attention. What was so special here was that I was all alone, I could really soak it in!
Well this a whopper of a video… I loved the staircase it was amazing and even better as it showed its battle scars. The person that moved me the most was Mary Holt … fancy being locked away for 16 years for falling in love 😮. The furniture was stunning and I loved the high chair 🥰. Thanks for all the background Lucy as usual you tell us in such a caring way. I hope more people visit. 🥰
Yes, poor Mary, I've been trying to find the original sources of that story but so far not had any luck, you can bet he didn't keep her where anyone could hear her though!
What a lovely place this was you could feel the atmosphere even in a video the long gallery was stunning and the history amazing thank you for showing it to us 😊❤
Thanks for coming with me! It was such an unexpected joy to me this house, It's really engrained on my psyche now I can't wait to return!
Thanks Lucy. Bloody lovely. In all sincerity I would be delighted to have strong evidence to demonstrate the existence of realm beyond our own that manifests itself with ghostly apparitions.
Until such time as this is done, I will continue to fall off my chair laughing every time someone claims; "I saw a ghost, ghosts are real".
It's a tough one for me because I have a WILD imagination and I'd be the first person to see something if it was there. I certainly feel atmosphere changes and temperature changes, but then was the central heating turned off? Tough one for me as in really really interested in the theories but then my rational mind tells me to stop .. yeah that probably makes no sense does it! 😂
@@throughlucyslens You make sense. You hit the nail on the head when you speak of "Imagination". As long as it's a bit of harmless fun, you are just as normal as anyone else. I also feel differences in temperature, don't we all? Instinctively we fear the dark, lest our primeval, monkey brain doesn't spot that tiger hiding within. A perceived threat has the same effect as a genuine threat. The monkey within us will get eaten, if it doesn't take action. Socially, to save face, we have learned to call it a ghost, as a tiger would come across as silly. I have no beef with anyone being curious, that is what makes us human. The moment a shyster says; "That'll be £50 please", pick up your wooden stake...
I've been labelled as "anxious" all my life and I've done loads of work on myself about fight or flight, I get quite the kick out of CONQUERING that scared monkey now, even though it was really frightening when all that adrenaline was knocking around my system making me stress the hell out. I don't think I'll ever been in control of my anxiety completely as it's chemical - but understanding it and being rational about it as helped a LOT.
@@throughlucyslens You have no idea how brave you really are.
This is soooo good! Thank you for encouraging people to visit the Hall ~ Susie (works here!)
Hey Susie! Glad it's okay! I absolutely loved it and it's been on my mind on and off since I visited! Feel like I want to write a book now 😂
@@throughlucyslens I'm glad you love it - I do too. Go for it :) Do you mind if I make a separate comment of instructions to get there on public transport, google maps takes you an unnecessarily long way round which I worry is putting people off coming!
Yes course you can - I can pin it as top comment x
Well preserved building inside and in the open, yet no souvenir shop - odd! Holte was a strange one was he the 17C Fred West then? Jogging up the wooden stairs with that creaking sound, if you were about the storm the rooms by the soldiers - you would want to recreate that sound! It's got all the features of a horror-related past. Villa Park - big ground! The Holte End used to have terracing, so if you were high up was like being at a top of a block of flats! Go on watch the count and cookie monster on Sesame Street - might get you gong!
I was in the Holte End on the final game of the 93/94 season and we all got a bit of brick before it was demolished. I don't follow football myself but have a lot of football mad uncles and cousins so would get taken along for the ride .. I never minded, it was really exciting, especially in the old Holte End where it was really noisy and vibrant.
What a great place ! Thanks for showing us round! It is really amazing what’s out there not getting enough attention ! Maybe you’ll create a sudden rush of visitors for them? The council needs to think of some interesting ways of getting more people in the door, perhaps having re-enactment days -or there’s always the cafe! It must be heavily subsidised at the moment! X
I would love that if it happened! The cafe is closed at the moment which is a real shame but I can understand why because if there is no one there to buy things I guess it's not worth their while. They have ghost tours which are very successful I think - so fingers crossed for a long future for Aston Hall x
Can confirm the rush, we had over 120 visitors on Friday, that was wild, and my manager emailed saying it was strangely busy yesterday too. Massively positive! Also the council don’t run Aston Hall, it’s run by Birmingham Museums Trust which is a charity much in need of public support. :)
Amazing place, thank you for sharing 😊 you should be a presenter on tv, you would be perfect 😊
Oh my goodness I would love that but I'm just as happy doing my thing on here every week - it's been life changing for me and I wish I had done it earlier :)
Lovely looking building. I will have to visit.👍😄
Sad story of the young boy who hanged himself.
Beautiful long gallery. 💕
Very sad isn't it? Imagine being that scared - he must have been a blinking horrible man!
Thanks!
You are so generous, it's lovely, thank you ❤️
Thank you for sharing another video with us go away I look so forward to watching things like this and the history and how it used to be what it used to be I love this all and I love hearing people like you talking about it showing us put it on RUclips for all of us to know and for those who do not know some history there for certain people out there thank you very much for sharing Ellis❤
My pleasure! Making these videos takes me away from my daily life in a similar way and I love it, thank you for coming with me x
I remember going here on a school trip and it gave me the heebie jeebies 😂 The whole area is supposed to be haunted, Moor Lane which is not far from the hall is supposedly one of the most haunted roads around too! And I think it’s a bit spooky your footage went missing! But great video as always, I love hearing the history of these places that I’ve grown up with!
Ohh I am straight off to google about Moor Lane now ... I think Aston Hall just LOOKS spooky before you even step inside, but knowing the character of the first owner I am not surprised he made it look as unhospitable as possible!
I’ve just subscribed 😊 I really enjoyed your content thank you for introducing me to a place I’d not heard of before.
Thank you so much, I enjoyed Aston Hall immensely and I actually want to go back because I think there is lots more to learn, thanks for subscribing! you are very welcome here x
btw, if your looking for local places to use your national trust membership to see, I can recommend Old Mosely Hall north of Wolverhampton right by the M54, and Wightwick Manor, on the western side
It's on my list, drove past it on the way Cardiff last week but didn't have the time to stop - I want to see the priest holes!
Love Aston Hall - Loved to visit at Christmas.
It would be lovely if they could still do the Christmas candlelight evenings but sadly health and safety means they can't anymore :(
Very interesting Lucy.😊
Thank you :)
Been to Aston Hall a few times. I think the last time was by candle light. The area is not that good though. Brilliant video.
Thank you, yes I think the reputation of the area puts people off but it's lovely once you are there and I felt safe. It's a shame they can't do the candlelight evenings anymore (health and safety) because that would have been amazing!
It's so amazing and brillant your vloggs get better always so beautifull and kind and caring humble lady always ❤️ 😊❤❤🎉🎉😊😊😊😊😊 be happy always and drive safe and happy always 🎃 💖 a true fan always 😊😊
Thanks Stephen! Really enjoyed making this one so thanks for coming with me! 🥰🎃🎃🎃
Another great video
Thank you Candy :)
Just adding. There was a brilliant serial on Ch 5 years back
“ The Sword Divided”. Brilliantly researched and acted.
The story of the Civil War.
Hope you get time to check it out.
It moved me especially Charles 1st trial by Bradshaw and Peters😢
Thank you for this - I am always looking for new history based things to watch and I am sure when it comes to the trial I really will cry!
Thanks. I really know you will be totally absorbed in it as I was
It gives the viewer an in sight as to these great houses were run
It also covers the years after the demise of Charles and the restoration
More Dopamine coming your way😅
Can't wait!!!
Thank you ,so inreresting
So very welcome, thank you :)
You would never, never think this was a >5 minute drive from me.
Funny you should mention Tom Hanks being an AVFC fan. Back in January my neighbour called and told me to look over my back gate - Tom Hanks was right there. Haven’t ever come face to face with my beloved Geezer Butler, sadly. One day maybe!
No way!!! Was he taking advantage of match day free parking "on road" 😂 I think it's really cute he decided to support them because he thought it "sounded nice" got to love him!
He was literally just strolling down the street with the masses 😂
Good old Tom!
Gorgeous house!!❤️🇨🇦
She's a stunner :)
I live in Coventry and lovely to know there's a grand house so nearby. However I'm scared to visit because it's haunted😩
Honestly don't be scared, there's nothing there but lovely things! I'm very sensitive and felt nothing x
Ty Lucy
Very welcome, thank you for coming with me!
A place so of it's time and thanks Lucy, for saying Halloween as it should be said and not as they seem to do now, 'Hollow' ? He wasn't a pleasant man but so interesting though! I just remembered, from my education days, that kidnapping of a young woman of wealth, was a practice back then, to force a marriage, so maybe his locking her up was a far shorter term thing and intended to disappoint the kidnapper.?
I know Halloween as "Hallows-Eve" .. god knows where people have got hollows from .. and don't start me on "boo boxes" 😂 it's a fabulous house and yes that's food for thought about the kidnapping theory. I am so into this place at the moment I want to go digging for original evidence it!
Next time you’re on my doorstep pop in! ❤
Will do!!! I drove past your road last week too for work ...
Before you went into the long gallery there was a picture on the left hand side? or was it a picture?
I'll have to rewatch and get back to you ...
@throughlucyslens no worries
I’m a brummie, but I’ve never knew this existed!
It's fab! Hunt it out next time you have time, it's such an unexpected treat!
Lucy as an historian, please up your knowledge to your sister in Newfoundland, Britain's first colony.
Will do - I do need to get better at American history, we aren't taught about it here which always blows my mind really!
When we go to a game we park on King Edward school car park then go through Aston Park to the ground always passing the hall, infact my grandson asked what is was so I told him its just an old abandoned hall 😂 is how much I know 😂 and been going Villa Park 50 years 😂 I knew where the Holte End got its name and where from but never really took notice lol
Just goes to show my history is poor and you do help educating me, glad you enjoyed the hall, maybe one day I'll take grandson, looks disabled friendly 🙂
One last thing
Up The Villa 👍
UTV! Yes pop in one time it's brilliant and the ground floor is certainly fully accessible. I mean you would think it was old and abandoned as there isn't much advertising it!
the Holte End used to be uncovered(might know) - my dad/grandad went to a semi-final cup tie in 1948(Blackpool v Spurs). When they got to the top of the terracing was very high up, they noticed the smaller grandstand had been hit with an incendary device during WW2, near the Witton Lane End.....
Wow, not been round that house. It is supposed to be haunted by a few ghosts, in the house and also in the grounds!
Yes, someone has told me about a road "Moor Lane" Right near which is supposed to be haunted too - I am going to go and see if I can find any information out about it now.
The only thing that scary about Aston Hall is what lives in the surrounding areas to it .
I've done a lot of work with the communities in Aston and I have always found them to be very nice, welcoming to me and close knit.
😊
❤
Hallowe'en? Not really, we were more of a Samhain/Sauin kind of couple. A week long celebration, friends, fancy dress, pub crawls, lock-ins, house parties, food, games and booze culminating with Bonfire Night. Good times.
I love autumn, it's a special time of year, what you get up to sounds perfection!
@@throughlucyslens Sweet.
peacock on the dining table. I've seen a few "ye olde" food documentaries to believe it may have been served! Probably tasted like chicken.
Definitely like chicken 😂
Love it❤. I covered this on my podcast @ghosttalespodcast
Ohh thank you .. Spotify? I will check it out! I would love to know more about the ghostly side!
@throughlucyslens yes it's on Spotify and RUclips @ghosttalespodcast ❤️
I'm glad you made it along to the Hall as it'd have been a shame to miss it! I definitely think it's getting harder to attract visitors to places that don't have some kind of spectacle on offer on the day, I've been the only person or one of only a couple of people at a few places this summer even when the weather's been good and entry to where I was visiting was very cheap, donations requested but not compulsory or even free whereas a friend of mine who doesn't object to history being reduced to jousting knights displays every hour type attractions has said they've not noticed much of a difference to last summer... Thanks again for taking us with you to a quieter, more DIY place. (Have a scarf emoji for the algorithm and just in case the next trip isn't on such a lovely autumn day: 🧣)
Thank you for the scarf - I am blinking freezing today! Temperature has certainly dropped. Yes it's a shame, I prefer the more modest places, I am currently editing a video where a lot of the reviews say its "boring" or "not much to see" - but it's a workhouse - I am not sure there should be people dancing about in Victorian costumes acting destitute - I always like to consider empathy and the fact this was a real persons life, not an episode of Eastenders, like you say though I think people expect a bit of a show ..
Thank you Lucy sharing this hidden gem with us all 🥰
You are welcome! There was a coffee shop but sadly it's no longer open because of low visitor numbers, hopefully one day it can come back because where the cafe was is in an old stable block surrounded by gardens - really peaceful! Fingers crossed x
@@throughlucyslens I hope so Lucy 🙏🏽 x
