    I show you the ultra light rooftop tent from Inspired overland. This roof top tent only weight 76 lbs! Plus, it's around $1,200, which is cheap for a roof top tent. It's not perfect, but it's a pretty cool design for someone looking for a light roof top tent.

    I like that it looks like I can park in the garage. I like I can take it on and off when I don't need it.
    It's cheap, lightweight and small.
    It reminds me of thru hiking 100lb pack or 50lb. Hike 100 miles and you can throw all the creature comforts out the window. Weight is everything

    • @Venture2Roam
      @Venture2Roam  2 месяца назад +6

      Exactly. For someone who understands weight tradeoffs - this is a fantastic option. I can easily put this on and off my rigs all by myself...and it fits in the garage no problem. Also..you don't really feel it while driving. But weight always has trade offs..it's just a matter of choosing what is the most important to you.

      @@Venture2Roam Can’t compare to a hardshell RTT but to the soft ones 😉 It’s kind of a regular tent (material and design) fitting on top of an even smaller car (lightweight) with much better protection and wind economical than other soft tops complicated to set up 🤷‍♀️ best of all different worlds in a RTT and not braking the bank 😂 Love it ❣️ Thanks so much for your great reviews btw ❤
      Especially for people driving smaller cars who can’t afford buying a truck to carry those heavy weight hardshell RTTs it’s kind of a perfect solution to get off the ground when overlanding 😍
      People being that tall still can use the tent comfortably when sleeping diagonally 😉
      13:00 Did you try using the zipper yet? This would allow to open the sides just partly on the top part 🤔 ground campers would know how to partly open their tents 🤷‍♀️ looks like you’re biased kind of downsizing from the luxury RTT world 😂

    I probably have the heaviest of RTT's with an Alucab 3.1 including the table and backrest addition. And it creates some drama when you are in off camber situations or going through soft snow/sand/mud. But it is bullet proof in high wind and the extra amenities are awesome. It is hard to find the perfect RTT, with weight savings you have to sacrifice some things to get other benefits, such as being able to remove easily, less top heavy, etc. I would have no problem with the zipper because my awning has one that has lasted for years with heavy coatings of mud on various trips, including my recent trip to Death Valley. Great video Will!

    • @Venture2Roam
      @Venture2Roam  2 месяца назад +1

      Those Alucabs are pretty luxurious though! It was on my short list before deciding to go with the Intrepid Geo 2.5. You are so right in that there is no perfect tent...they all have tradeoffs. It's funny that the zipper is getting comments..while I'd prefer a buckle...zippers are a pretty tried and true option lol...like every awning out there has a zipper bag...but every person has to decide what to spend their hard earned money on, so I won't argue about it!

    Great review! I always like seeing others perspective of this tent. I got one a few weeks ago to go on my xj that sees a lot of CO trails so keeping the weight down was a big factor for me, and so far this thing has been great. I honestly can't tell if I notice a difference with it up there or if its just normal lifted xj mannerisms. Also havent noticed any drop in mpgs lol.
    A few things I've done for QOL updates that you or anyone reading this comment may find useful:
    -The mattress is actually pretty comfy for what it is, but I added a basic full size 1.25 memory foam topper from walmart trimmed to fit in the cover with the mattress that comes with it as well as a full size set of fleece sheets, easy to tuck under mattress to fit. Damn comfy for a tent. Ladder stays in the cab or in the garage
    -When using the ladder, I always pop up the support pole on the side the ladder will go on and put the top of the ladder in the slot for the support pole and use the velcro strap for the support pole to keep it secure. Also it feels more sturdy if you stack your steps at the top of the ladder
    -Also for the ladder, rubber step edging works great on the steps of the ladder if you got sensi feet. I put some on the key steps used when climbing and it feels much better if having to climb out barefoot for a wee or something. Barely added any collapsed length to the ladder, still straps closed and bagged away
    -I used paracord and heat shrink tube to make extensions for every zipper on the tent, it's so nice having longer zippers for the main canvas flys so you dont have to climb up and/or reach so far to zip them closed
    -303 marine grade protectant spray, apply a coat occasionally(beginning of season?) to protect the outside from uv/debris damage. Its basically a soft tonneau cover, think truck beds, boat covers and bimini tops and etc
    -Zipper lubricant and cleaner for the main shell zipper, especially if youre in dry, dusty climates
    -One of the most common(and few) complaints I've seen about this tent is the rods for the rain fly dont hold it taut enough. I am reluctant to drill 45 degree holes in my frame like some recommend and saw a video of a guy who used a simple wooden dowel rod with holes bored on each end to mount with the metal rods to keep them spaced at a good width. Highly recommend looking for that video on YT, its easy to find

    Used to have this RTT. I'm 5'9 and with a regular pillow my feet were crammed at the wedge. Had to sleep on my side because my toes won't fit. My GF is 5'1 and she fine but once the pillows and blankets were in the mix it became honestly too uncomfortable. We would wake each other up all night from just the tossing and turning. I sold this RTT after about 7 uses due to the terrible nights sleep. Picked up a very nice ground tent similar to the shift pod. Won't go back to RTT.
    That being said i was able to toss the tent up on my lifted 4runner on 35s by myself.

    I really like that support strut idea: those gas struts are great, but they don’t last forever, and they have a particular tendency to fail in cold weather. It’s a really good idea to have a non-spring means to keep the top up, and I’m surprised to not have seen that in other tents.

    • @Venture2Roam
      @Venture2Roam  2 месяца назад

      Ya I've seen the struts in my other tents struggle in cold temps. I think some tents have brackets that you can put on the struts to lock them in place..but not every tent company does that...not sure why more don't do it.

    Hey, great video mate. I got this tent on sale from IO last week for 900 bucks. I picked it up in Dallas and went on my way to a 4 day camp at national grasslands. You covered most of the topics on point. I have a couple of things I wanted to share. Firstly, if you’re taller than 5 foot 8 or 9, get the xl version. Standard size gonna be pretty tight for any one taller. Secondly, you can open the window/side door partially if you zip the door halfway and roll up the remaining hanging canvas. This is what I did most of the time when hanging out in day time. Also, even though it’s just 76 lbs, it’s gonna be extremely difficult to put it on your vehicle alone because of the size. I am a short guy, but I can’t see a 6’1 guy putting it top of the roof alone, without banging up the roof or scratching the racks. I could be wrong though. Cheers.

    • @Venture2Roam
      @Venture2Roam  2 месяца назад

      Awesome info thanks for sharing. I never thought about putting this on your rack solo for anyone less than my height…I can easily put it on and take it off by myself…but I also don’t really care about scratching my roof rack too much. Once you get the edge of the tent on the rack you have a lever, and it’s quite easy to move it around…but at my height I can reach up to he rack ok…if I were shorter, I can now understand how that would be a big issue. I have dropped an RTT over the side of a rig and scratched the crap out of it before…so you’re advice to use 2 ppl regardless is good! Glad to hear the windows are not an issue!!

      I'm 5'7" and would recommend anyone over 5'6" get the XL. With my head on a pillow my toes still hit the top. Yes, it's not easy to mount the tent but compared to ANY other tent, this can be done without a hoist. My last RTT weighed 225 lbs. so there was no chance of putting it on or taking off alone. I've managed to get this tent on and off solo a couple of times. It took some effort but wasn't impossible. I have noticed on my that some of the seam tape has come off. The good news is Inspired Overland is supposed to be offering upgrades to the canvas so I am definitely looking forward to seeing what that upgrade will cost. Great first look vid!

How will that roof material hold up with UV and weather conditions compared to a hard shell? Now a comment. It would be great if they made this where the bar pops out to extend that front canvas area to give it more room like other roof tops. I really don't think it would add that much weight. It's so hard to compare it to the Topoak and the Roofnest. They are massively different. Topoak/Roofnest both win for space and higher end finishes. Inspired wins for weight and ease of use..but this tent isn't like the others in almost any way...it's a different category all together. I think it's perfect for the solo tripper who's looking to save weight. Not so great for a family due to the size.

    • @Venture2Roam
      @Venture2Roam  2 месяца назад

      I agree the weight savings is the best part for sure. With the soft shell, you'd think it would rip easily...and I'm not saying it wouldn't happen..but I had an RTT cover made of this same type of fabric for years...and it took tree branches, rocks, more tree branches...never tore...maybe I just got lucky, but that's my frame of reference. I prefer latches to zippers just because it's faster..but zippers have been proven time and again as a mainstay in overlanding. Every awning I've owned except one has had a zipper on the bag..and they get caked with mud, rocks, dust, etc...never had a single issue...that said the zipper is my least favorite part of the tent..because it's slower, and you have to walk all the way around the rig to open it up..vs just undoing two latches.

      Speaking from my experience as a paying IO customer with an XL tent, I'd like to offer my perspective.
      I've camped in extremely windy conditions and never encountered any issues with the IO tent; it's more durable than you might assume. Zipper problems were rare during our trips. Keeping a brush handy to clean off dust and debris and using high-quality zipper pulls can really make a difference. Proper leverage is essential when dealing with zippers. Just like with any zipper, they may fail if not properly maintained. It's reassuring that Inspired uses YKK zippers, which are known for their quality.
      Regarding storage, in my XL tent, I can comfortably fit two sleeping bags, a memory foam pillow, and blankets. This is partly because I use an air mattress; when fully deflated, I can pack everything in neatly. The tonneau material is a nice touch because it allows for some stretch. Even with the standard mattress, I was still able to store my sleeping bags, although I couldn't fit blankets or a pillow.

    Anyway at what point is light to light. Not thinking this one will do very well in those ID winds. Mattress looks very uncomfortable to me.
    All this said my 125 lb US made Terrapod was close to 4k
    Not sure what OSHA would think of that ladder.
    Keep us posted and the carbon fiber one sounds like it may have some structural aspects.

      Great comment..legit questions. I'll do my best to reply to all of them..so this might be a long reply. In term of overseas vs. China. My frame of reference is a little different. Intrepid (my Geo 2.5) actually owns their manufacturing plant in Vietnam. One of the owners of the company is also an owner of the plant that makes hardware for other outdoor rec companies...and that's where they make their tents...so to me that's more overseas..less "China." I've been exchanging a lot of emails with the head of operations at Inspired and one of things he was very adamant about is that, similarly to Intrepid, they have a lot of previous manufacturing experience in other fields..and as such are using a different manufacturer in China than other brands...and they have control/exclusivity. I wouldn't just say that in a vid without basing it on something like that. So China/Vietnam...or other places (had a German tent company reach out last week) is all overseas to me..but you're also not wrong in that many RTT brands get their products from the same places in China. Made in USA is really hard to come by in this category..and honestly, it doesn't always mean better in this instance because we lack the industry experience in tent manufacturing that other countries have. That said I almost always buy/support made in USA when it makes sense. To your question of it being too light. Maybe? So far I don't think so though...this might come into play in really rough weather if the tent is really flexing under heavy winds. I imagine this tent would be a LOT louder in a bad wind storm because of all the fabric, but we'll test it and see. The Ladder. I goofed on the ladder..it actually clicks in to the side of the tent where the support poles attach. So you pull the support pole up, and snap in the ladder...pretty clever actually. Really hoping to get my hands on a carbon fiber tent...I think that loos super interesting. More expensive, but maybe it solves some of those wind problems..we'll see!!! Thanks for a great comment question.

      @@Venture2Roam well your response was better then my question. I apologize as overseas actually makes sence to me after your explanation. I will follow this on the carbon fiber model. Even if it's more there is quite a bit of room the reach 4k.

    You hesitated a bit when you said “manufactured over seas”. You mean China? Are you getting paid for this post by the manufacturer? If so I will stop watching all your videos. If you are not paid then why can’t you say where it is manufactured honestly?

      This feels like a very loaded question so let me start by saying - thank you for watching - if you don't want to watch my channel anymore because I use the word overseas instead of China I'm OK with that...BUT - There's another comment on this video where I replied in depth, so I'll give you the short version. Intrepid manufactures in Vietnam, Inspired in China, and I was just contacted by a German manufacturer the last week..so I hesitated because I didn't want to go into all of the different places these could be manufactured. The truth is most RTTs are made in China, from a few factories. It's really hard to even find RTTs that are made in the USA. So when I meet companies that are doing something different - even if ithey are having them made in China, I'm interested.

      Yep, good comparison. It looks pretty durable to me, but we'll test it out.
