I chose to do a literature related degree because English was my favourite subject (even though, as in your case, the classes in high school were uninspired and of very low quality in terms of what we managed to discuss) and I felt drawn to books even though I did not have a lot of experience with reading or knowledge of relevant works. I remember being at an introductory day of one of the degree programs I was doubting between: I was sitting at a table where people were discussing books and I felt so ashamed and incompetent because I did not know any of the works they were talking about. In my case it was partly a matter of coming from a family where people did not read and where we did not have a bookshelf. In the meantime I have collected a lot of books ;) I think your videos are very valuable because it can help people like us to have access to material where literature is discussed; it can help people discover their passion for literature or develop it. I am really glad you mentioned Dürrenmatt. "Die Physiker" is one of my favourite works; it's probably the one I quoted the most in Ethics and German classes, whenever I worked on essays/exams/presentations. Also, as in your case, being exposed to authors-like ETA Hoffmann and Stefan Zweig-was definitely an upside.

With all your videos I’ve been intrigued by how you read, what you read, the subjects your studying, the notes you’re taking away from the books, the classes you will take next semeste - in essence your intellectual life. I started studying literature at the age of 12. I'm 28 now finishing my PhD in literature and about to start a wonderful teaching career at a great Uni. i'm so excited to share my knowledge with students. I never had a back up plan- but i knew i would do everything and anything possible to get here.

My first serious reread at about 11yrs of age was Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, my imagination was just on fire recalling all my earlier experience of the colours and inventions that were Mr Wonka's permanent journey in retaining childhood and the magic of youthfulness and having all of one's opportunity ahead of oneself, oh and, of course, the taste of chocolates: a life love of mine!

After studying and completing three degrees in literature, I found your vlog was so refreshing. It was as the Danes might say so hygge, and at the same time so insightful. As to Emerson a big yes. Thoreau too. I know that the former editor for Amazon books James Marcus has completed a book on Emerson. Thank you for a wonderful vlog - hope the numbers climb with the caveat the content remains the same in style and presentation :-) . A writer I would recommend (if you have the time) Lin Yutang and his "Importance of Living" (1937).
Lovely video! 😊 Re: Jobs with a literature degree - I have studied literature & linguistics to a Masters degree and loved it so much. Then I worked in marketing for 4 years and now I'm going back to uni for a tech degree. I figured that I love language as a subject at uni but not so much working with it. Mainly because the job market for the more interesting Jobs (like publishing or academia) is quite competitive and this is not for me. There are plenty of jobs in marketing but I actually hate selling stuff to people 😅. So I decided I want to earn my money doing something else. But I do not regret studying language - it gave me so much joy and I felt like I HAD to do it. 😊

RE: biggest challenge of learning lit - Inspiring words - making the most out of what's in front of you. I wish we didn't have to remind ourselves of that all the time. RE: How taste in books evolved - completely agree. I didn't start reading until I was perhaps 27? Before then when I would read it was just in this naive sort of scope where I'd look for answers to specific questions and dart back and forth with no real glue holding anything together. RE: Career when studying lit + future Plans: Agreed. And again purposeful/inspiring. We need to allow ourselves the chance to be happy when it comes to our future plans. Maybe it wont' be a sure thing but if we don't put all of ourselves in what we want to do, how can we expect to be happy? RE: Other Music - Wish you had a list somewhere for some of these artists to check out! If you're into Lana Del Rey, you should check out a film called Paris, Texas. It's fantastic and I imagine it inspired her song. RE: 10 Books: Great picks, especially #1. Emerson is underrated. Congratulations on your success. There’s a 1983 British movie called Educating Rita. It was nominated for three academy awards. It is about Rita, a hairdresser and who wants something more in her life (not just marriage, babies and going to the pub on the weekend with her husband), so chooses to go to university to study literature. It changed her and (I think) for the best (she became more cultured and thrived as a person). I recommend this movie. Thank you for this Q & A. After going through the questions submitted in your community post, I decided not to ask any because mine were either already there, or too specific; I thought they would not be of general interest. Also, I knew the answer to many of them from many of your previous videos. When I find a channel like yours (I have found a handful) I make an effort to watch all the videos in order to really grasp what's going on, what kind of life-course is being shared (so far I've watched about 50-60%). Another very important feature of those channels (including yours) is the comments section; I come for those as much as the video itself. This is a very good indication of the quality of the content: the quality of the comments. Which kind of brings me to a question that just popped in my head: do you ever get bad or abusive comments? How do you handle that situation? You don't have to answer that, of course. As a former student of literature (BA in English language & lit., unfinished/dropout from a Masters in Comparative Lit., and former university teacher in those fields [!]), I would say this: the practical usefulness of literary studies is very very limited, but it will make the student very good at performing many other things. What are those things? Well it's up to the student herself. In other words, we are talking about a very specific, particular skill. It doesn't matter whether you stay in academia, become a teacher, translator, publisher, even a writer, or just for self-discovery. I used to tell my students that a literature student is a professional reader; her job is to read, and, most importantly, give some account of that reading. It is this account that matters, in my opinion. To give an account of something is to tell a story (dar cuenta de algo es contar una historia, in my native Spanish). Not necessarily in words, mind you; a particular, specific behavior would be the bare, but ESSSENTIAL, minimum. It's fair to say that I wouldn't be writing this or about this if it weren't for you. It's not your fault, it is not your responsibility, but you are certainly the cause. Books work in mysterious ways... "Sei ein Mann und folge mir nicht nach."

The Ukrainian language is very pleasant, melodious, lyrical, even beautiful, it has a large number of words and synonyms. By the way, the band DakhaBrakha is a Ukrainian band. I myself understand, read, write and can speak Russian, Ukrainian, English. Tried to learn German. But Ukrainian is the best!

I would say it would be fine for you to post book club videos behind a paywall temporarily and then make them publicly available after a period of time. It's commonly done with movies, some of which go to theaters first, then come out in DVD format later. Books coming out in hardback first for a period of time, and only later in paperback, is another analogue. That way your patrons would feel special for having private access to your work first, after reading with you, and your work would also be widely published for the non-paying public.

I recall that one of my questions is about the Robert Musil books: “ The Man without Qualities.” A friend gifted me that book when I was just starting university but it just sat on the shelf. The woman who gifted me the book was my best friend. I don’t think you’ve read it but what are your impressions of it as an Austrian literature student (as the author was Austrian). Originally I thought the Musil work is too large of an undertaking so I am curious to hear from someone who has , at least, heard of people who have read this. I’m getting more acclimated to the idea of long works as I have the first book from Proust which you love but also I picked up Knausgard as well; though admittedly, I haven’t read either yet. You were kind enough to send me the link to the French narration of Proust in a comment off one of your videos ( if I can find it again). By the way, I have a certificate from the university in Paris ( amongst others) you are attending in the fall; looking forward to hearing about it in English or français. Danke. Tchus!
There are more and more very bright young English people choosing not to go to University due to the Tuition fees here, which is just so so sad. They don't want to start out in life and work saddled with £30,000 and more of debt.

Re: Jobs with a literature degree - I have studied literature & linguistics to a Masters degree and loved it so much. Then I worked in marketing for 4 years and now I'm going back to uni for a tech degree. I figured that I love language as a subject at uni but not so much working with it. Mainly because the job market for the more interesting Jobs (like publishing or academia) is quite competitive and this is not for me. There are plenty of jobs in marketing but I actually hate selling stuff to people 😅. So I decided I want to earn my money doing something else. But I do not regret studying language - it gave me so much joy and I felt like I HAD to do it. 😊

RE: biggest challenge of learning lit - Inspiring words - making the most out of what's in front of you. I wish we didn't have to remind ourselves of that all the time.
RE: How taste in books evolved - completely agree. I didn't start reading until I was perhaps 27? Before then when I would read it was just in this naive sort of scope where I'd look for answers to specific questions and dart back and forth with no real glue holding anything together.
RE: Career when studying lit + future Plans: Agreed. And again purposeful/inspiring. We need to allow ourselves the chance to be happy when it comes to our future plans. Maybe it wont' be a sure thing but if we don't put all of ourselves in what we want to do, how can we expect to be happy?
RE: Other Music - Wish you had a list somewhere for some of these artists to check out! If you're into Lana Del Rey, you should check out a film called Paris, Texas. It's fantastic and I imagine it inspired her song.
RE: 10 Books: Great picks, especially #1. Emerson is underrated.

There’s a 1983 British movie called Educating Rita. It was nominated for three academy awards. It is about Rita, a hairdresser and who wants something more in her life (not just marriage, babies and going to the pub on the weekend with her husband), so chooses to go to university to study literature. It changed her and (I think) for the best (she became more cultured and thrived as a person). I recommend this movie. Thank you for this Q & A. After going through the questions submitted in your community post, I decided not to ask any because mine were either already there, or too specific; I thought they would not be of general interest. Also, I knew the answer to many of them from many of your previous videos. When I find a channel like yours (I have found a handful) I make an effort to watch all the videos in order to really grasp what's going on, what kind of life-course is being shared (so far I've watched about 50-60%). Another very important feature of those channels (including yours) is the comments section; I come for those as much as the video itself. This is a very good indication of the quality of the content: the quality of the comments. Which kind of brings me to a question that just popped in my head: do you ever get bad or abusive comments? How do you handle that situation? You don't have to answer that, of course. As a former student of literature (BA in English language & lit., unfinished/dropout from a Masters in Comparative Lit., and former university teacher in those fields [!]), I would say this: the practical usefulness of literary studies is very very limited, but it will make the student very good at performing many other things. What are those things? Well it's up to the student herself. In other words, we are talking about a very specific, particular skill. It doesn't matter whether you stay in academia, become a teacher, translator, publisher, even a writer, or just for self-discovery. I used to tell my students that a literature student is a professional reader; her job is to read, and, most importantly, give some account of that reading. It is this account that matters, in my opinion. To give an account of something is to tell a story (dar cuenta de algo es contar una historia, in my native Spanish). Not necessarily in words, mind you; a particular, specific behavior would be the bare, but ESSSENTIAL, minimum.
It's fair to say that I wouldn't be writing this or about this if it weren't for you. It's not your fault, it is not your responsibility, but you are certainly the cause. Books work in mysterious ways... "Sei ein Mann und folge mir nicht nach."

I would say it would be fine for you to post book club videos behind a paywall temporarily and then make them publicly available after a period of time. It's commonly done with movies, some of which go to theaters first, then come out in DVD format later. Books coming out in hardback first for a period of time, and only later in paperback, is another analogue. That way your patrons would feel special for having private access to your work first, after reading with you, and your work would also be widely published for the non-paying public.

I recall that one of my questions is about the Robert Musil books: “ The Man without Qualities.” A friend gifted me that book when I was just starting university but it just sat on the shelf. The woman who gifted me the book was my best friend.
I don’t think you’ve read it but what are your impressions of it as an Austrian literature student (as the author was Austrian).
Originally I thought the Musil work is too large of an undertaking so I am curious to hear from someone who has , at least, heard of people who have read this.
I’m getting more acclimated to the idea of long works as I have the first book from Proust which you love but also I picked up Knausgard as well; though admittedly, I haven’t read either yet. There are more and more very bright young English people choosing not to go to University due to the Tuition fees here, which is just so so sad. They don't want to start out in life and work saddled with £30,000 and more of debt.
I was astonished to learn that University is free in Austria. It shows how different the world is outside the UK.
