You know, I kinda like the idea of Hot Rod being the Autobot equivalent of Starscream, in being a kind of second in command and protege of Optimus, and being very competent and gifted but with notable flaws. I honestly don't hate Rodimus Prime. While I prefer Optimus Prime, I respect Rodimus Prime for being the first on screen Prime to defeat Galvatron and Unicron.
Hot Rod actually makes a lot of sense as a coming-of-age type protagonist, with a good mix of heroic qualities and flaws to overcome. From what I know of Gen 1 it seems the creators were really just kinda winging it the whole time, and I think if the same story had been told today - when cartoon shows are made by people who tend to actually know what they're doing and plan ahead - Hot Rod would probably have been the main character and a protege of Optimus from the beginning. That would set him up to become the new leader later once viewers were used to thinking of him as the hero, and he'd grown into the role through a lot of character development.
You missed his appearance in Transformers Animated, where he was guarding one of the Autobot space bridge units during a Decepticon attack, which was the first time we saw him use his energy bow in animation (as far as I am aware).

G1 Hot Rod looks like he's simply a modified Lancia Stratos Zero Concept car which I believe would make him the second Lancia vehicle in Transformers apart form Wheeljack.
While I loved the movie as a kid, in general I feel the character works best as Hot Rod as his ascent to Rodimus felt a little rushed. But would be interested if one day we get a story where he still inadvertently gets prime killed. Then maybe Ultra Magnus or someone wlse else takes over for a longer period of time, allowing him to mature more. Finally, after maturing and overcoming his guilt from the death of Optimus, Hot Rod rises to become a wise CONFIDENT leader, following in the foosteps of his hero and predecessor. Kind of like Simba in the Lion King. Also I think his Energin Ultimate modenworks better for him rhan hus G1 camper. But that's just me.
Actually, in my opinion, Ultra Magnus should've been the one to be able to "redeem" himself by getting back the Matrix and then being able to unlock it to become the new Prime leader of the autobots. (After all, his G1 toy cab originally transformed into a white version of Optimus Prime before adding the trailer to form his "armor" that gave him his classic look as Ultra Magus.) Maybe in the movie, he would've been transformed into a white Optimus Prime who would've been given a new name to create a separate identity by calling himself Ultimus Prime. What do you think? Would he be a better leader (& perhaps a more popular than Rodimus Prime?)
@@RppRussell Possibly, at least at the time. But I agree, for the movie he would definitely work better as the next prime. With the movie's time constraints this redemption to a leader works better for ultra. While I enjoy Hot rod's redemption too, it didn't necessarily feel like he was redeeming himself as a leader, just as a person and warrior in general. While I still, love the idea of him growing to become a leader, the movie wasn't fit for that story. I think it should be ultra magnus after optimus, then hot rod, then i don't maybe one day bumblebee gets a shot as Gold Bug or something lol.
They spent so little time fleshing him out it was hard to care about him. The show had more focus on Ultra Magus than any other leader from the Autobots.
I was 7 years old when the 1986 movie came out, and I instantly loved the character of Hot Rod, and even enjoyed Rodimus Prime by the ending of that movie, even with his short screentime within it, regardless of how sad I was with the death of Optimus Prime. However, when Transformers season 3 started back up, I never really liked him anymore, and the longer it went on, the more I grew to dislike him. I liked the character in other series, but just not in that G1 series. Hard to believe, just to sell more toys, they ultimately killed the Franchise in the US, until Beast Wars showed up.
My childhood is coming back to hunt me 😅. Love it and for those who love the Transformers. I know a game that let you have Transformers Commender for WW2 Ships and ear their original voice. 😅
Yes he showed up outta no where but they explain at the beginning of the animated movie it's the year 2005 and years after spike was older and took over chosen by the matrix in the worst of times. So he had a lot of shoes to fill but learned along the way.
Hot Rod wouldn't have been so divisive if he wasn't just created to replace Optimus. If we got a season or half season to get to know him beforehand, we could've had an easier time accepting him as the successor to Prime. Optimus' death would have still been devastating, he was to many kids a father figure. But it wouldn't have felt like a cheap trick to make more toys.
Even though I am first to admit that Im biased to say that Optimus Prime is till this day my all time favorite as the Leader of the Autobots. I also love Hot Rod/ Rodimus Prime but I hate it how his arc was written in season 3. Yes I blamed Hot Rod for the death of Optimus Prime as a kid and I blamed Hasbro for it as well. Optimus Prime would have known what Megatron was up to with that blaster and Optimus Prime is known as the best Sharpshooter of the Autobots. He knows Megatron will pull any deceitefull tricks and was anticipating that Megatron would try something. But Hot Rod ( with his best intentions) got in the way which resulted in Optimus Prime's death. But I liked how Rodimus Prime did his best to be a good leader with such a young mind and with the weight of the world on his shoulders and the pressure of leadership...it would take a toll on anybody at one point or another. I would have liked to have seen Optimus his spark guiding Rodimus Prime during season 3 as a mentor and sharing his knowledge. Like Alpha Trion was a mentor to Optimus Prime. Yes Rodimus made some mistakes during his leadership but also redeemed himself. Was he a great leader? Yes. Was he a better leader than Optimus Prime? No he wasn't. The worst thing Rodimus did was destroy the new planet where Autobots were living in peace untill they were enslaved by Galvatron. That the writers wrote it so that Rodimus wouldn't even care that he destroyed the planet because it was too "perfect" was a very strange move for the character.
Rodimus Cron dominated both Autobots & Decepticons. Rodimus Prime's ability to 'scare' the Decepticons, much less Galvatron is robbing Galvatron the victory of putting Rodimus out of his and the TF lore's misery
Hot Rod was excellent in the Transformers movie but Rodimus Prime was lacking on the TV series. The movie was awesome!! I seen it in theaters as a kid with my friends
Rodimus Primes was the best leader of the Autobots because he was the most human of all, a true leader that know the burden of leadership, the consequences of actions and the importance of life, but his most important quality was his will to prevail, not because of vanity or pride, but for the sake of all the innocents
When I first watched the original movie, I literally hated his character, because of him letting Optimus die. But overtime, I did find myself start to forgive him during his appearances in the G1 cartoon.
Nice thumbnail of Rodimus Prime he was okay but he really didn't impress me in the G1 cartoons, Optimus will always be the greatest leader and commander leader of the Autobots
Hot rod gi tech specs was actually higher then Rodimus prime, sd, firepower, went to hot rod, intelligence was equal and rank gave the nod to Rodimus, even though Megatron was technically slightly weaker in firepower and strength then Galverton but was smarter, and was better in battles and making tactical decisions so was a better warrior and leader then Galverton , Optimus vs Orion let's compare Optimus and sideswipe or red alert also. If unicorn would've given Galverton Cyclonus strategic prowess Galverton would be superior to Megatron, and Rodimus actually lost tactical specs when he was reformatted to Rodimus.
I gotta say as much as I love Optimus and despise Hot rod/Rodimus. I can’t help but feel bad for the guy and that they did him dirty. He went from leader to trainee again and then only third in command to a sub group of autobots.
i grew up loving transformers and loved the 1986 movie, which i think is the official main TF movie. I couldnt stand the prime wars cartoon. I hope they make more of the War for Cybertron series on Netflix, and hope that he Hot Rod would make an appearance along with combiners.
I never liked Optimus because he was too rigid. Think about that for a moment, how many times did Optimus let Megatron live? Its this type of thinking that has been his biggest weakness. I liked Rodimus because he was cool and suave at first. He then became leader and he had alot of self doubt. But that is ok, you have to take alot of variables into consideration when you are leader. Optimus made mistakes but he was just too stubborn.
Easily the second-worst leader the Autobots ever had. This dude had more plot armor than God and somehow still managed to fail at just about everything.

They had plans to kill off Duke on GIJoe, but they saw the bad reactions from Optimus' death and canceled that.
Lt. Falcon and Hot Rod do parallel, now you mention it
i like how the cartoon movie was an all star cast with people like Leonard Nimoy and i think patrick swazy among others
Put this man in a live action movie or so help me
I used to watch transformers the movie every week as a kid. Hot rod was my Luke Skywalker. Only he had an actual story arc
bro, Luke had a story arc... the hell are you on about?
@@Demiurge13 I meant character arc. Which Luke definitely didn’t have
Yes he showed up outta no where but they explain at the beginning of the animated movie it's the year 2005 and years after spike was older and took over chosen by the matrix in the worst of times. So he had a lot of shoes to fill but learned along the way.
They could have wrote his story better, but they had all intentions of bringing Optimus back.
I always see him.
A kid that have to grown up fast .
He had to .
I honestly loved rodimus prime I hope he may reappear but we will never know 😢.
Rodimus Cron dominated both Autobots & Decepticons. Rodimus Prime's ability to 'scare' the Decepticons, much less Galvatron is robbing Galvatron the victory of putting Rodimus out of his and the TF lore's misery
Hey just wondering if you have any info on origins for Depth Charge from Beast Wars. I always thought that was a cool character.
Finally, someone who gets it
@@tartatovsky Yeah
He was definitely not the best leader.
@@layback76 Def was. Crazy how bro ended the war in five seconds and then optimus came back and started it up again
@@layback76 He was, he face challenges bigger than Optimus
When I first watched the original movie, I literally hated his character, because of him letting Optimus die. But overtime, I did find myself start to forgive him during his appearances in the G1 cartoon.
Nice thumbnail of Rodimus Prime he was okay but he really didn't impress me in the G1 cartoons, Optimus will always be the greatest leader and commander leader of the Autobots
Rodimus the legal successor to optimus prime gained control of the matrix of leadership and be the next prime
I love Rodimus Cron's transformation into Machoman Randy Savage Cron.
Rodimus Prime was one of the best characters transformers ever made.
Most folx like to say "Be the best you." But I prefer "Be your favorite self." Because your best may not be your favorite or true self.
Hotrod is the girlfriend that tries to intervene when your fighting someone and gets your ass kicked.
Because going from Lamborghini Countach to a Winnebago makes sense...
this is the end of the road. i love this film so much. total nostalgia but i couldn't care less.
And not one of them looks like the one in the thumbnail. I want THAT ONE, and I want it to transform. Signed-Richard.
Hot Rod is Jordan Poole
Lol
I REALLY HATE HOW THE AUTOBOTS ALWAYS DIED. THEY RARELY KILLED THE DECEPTICONS OFF.
Most hated Autobot of all time. You either love him or hate him… but no matter what you know him !
Hot rod > rodimus prime, Optimus prime > orion pax. Megatron > galvatron.
I never disliked Hot Rod/Rodimus for what happened in the movie. If I ever did, then I forgave him a long time ago. Optimus would too.
Rodimus is actually a better prime than optimus. He just didn't embrace the role.
Ever since the movie I liked Rodimus Prime I was kind of upset on how they re-envision him in the movies
He's only that way because he feels bad for getting Optimus killed lol
My goodness! Rodimus in the thumbnail looks like a demon😬😬
@ThatToyGuy 22:16 that's your video isn't it?
If they make a comedic batman movie, it better be with Pete Holmes and I would tell them to take my money 😂
Im sure that pic of the excellion hot rod is actually a pic of the transformers the last knight movie hot rod
That Thumbnail!
I've always considered rodimus to my favorite transformer besides Shockwave. 😊
This is the transformer I would love to see come to the big screen ❤❤❤
Rodimus was whiney in G1
Good to see his origins
My favorite Transformer of all time.
I don't know if it's just me but I keep hearing you say Quintesses and I thought they were called Quintessons
Easily the second-worst leader the Autobots ever had. This dude had more plot armor than God and somehow still managed to fail at just about everything.
