Post covid I started thinking about doing that with my house because I have 3 extra bedrooms in a big beautiful house and thought that some people may want to not be too alone and isolated, they want the experience of flat sharing and meeting new people. In a society where people are more and more alone and isolated this could be a great experience.

Especially if you already have the space! It’s a great way to generate some revenue without a huge capital expense.

The rent-a-room model is especially condusive to homes with casitas, finished basements that have a separate entrance, and the like.

Renting out rooms was going on long before Airbnb! It definitely takes a certain kind of person though. It brings to mind hostels!

Renting a room is also great for college kids who have an internship for a short term!

Hmm not sure about this. Unless it’s like a bed and breakfast model, where the host is always present. I could see something like that succeeding in wine country, like Temecula or Napa. Perhaps higher end towns where a couple is going on vacay and there aren’t many hotel options but the couple doesn’t need a whole house to themselves.

I'm with Sara. No Thanks. When ABNB first started and the hook was rent out a room, a couch, an air mattress in the corner, I thought "Who would do that?". Every time I heard ABNB after that, I completely ignored it (until a year or two ago when I started watching videos from you guys and Robuilt). Now I'm thinking more seriously about STR for a house I own (not the rent-a-room thing but the whole house).

Why not talking about Ca increasing str taxes by 15%?

I love how Tony is trying to talk about the article but Sara is just not having it 😂

Unless this is itself a strategy, she sounds uppity and dismissive of people who can only afford to rent a room. Makes me not want to listen to any more of their videos

That's just basic house hacking. Renting out a room to one of your buddies to help offset the cost of rent or mortgage. Why is it being looked at like it's an old idea come anew. Travel nurses and such usually rent rooms to save on money for their contracts.
