Great video. Im going to try that for my new orchid. BTW, sphagnum moss comes exclusively from bogs/marshy swamp type areas. The type you used looks like smooth cap moss. Thanks for taking the time to show us something new. Fabulous idea!
Great advice, I live opposite a park and never thought of gathering my own compost for my Orchids, so thanks I will go to the park tomorrow and gather what I need.👍
Thank you!! I am buying young plants/ seedlings, maybe/ and wanted to go organic. I will start collecting bark, etc. tomorrow!! Jeannie in Lakeport California
I went to Pet Smart and bought Spagnum moss and fir bark for reptiles, says it’s great for plants. I live in a very low humid area. I’ve been going nuts trying to find cheap substrate. I find orchid substrate on Amazon or other places are so costly. I also need to find proper ventilation pots. Hard to get. My poor orchid is going to suffer. It’s still blooming right now so I have a bit of time but it’s in a crappy substrate and no proper ventilation. I love your idea and your orchids look so healthy and happy. Do they bloom often with this substrate?
I thought the idea of the styrofoam in the bottom is because it doesn't biodegrade,it's not like your going to go out and buy it,but when you get stuff in mail it's a good way to get rid of it....
It's a great idea to make your own mix; however, I hate the use of any styrofoam as part of an orchid mix. That stuff is not biodegradable and accumulates like trash.
Watched your video several weeks ago, then I went out and found douglas fir bark. I have been watching many videos and reading comments under them and everyone is talking about sterilizing everything and have seen the debate go on about whether to boil the bark or bake it. I have noticed most people that have boiled it says it breaks down quicker or grows mold but then again I don't know where they are living or where their plant is located. I am in Vancouver, BC. Also, the apartment building I live in has a lot of moss growing in the grass especially on the north side of the building and was thinking of using that after watching your video. Can anyone tell me how I should sterilize this stuff?
Sorry for being pedantic but spiders and worms are not insects 😋 . But thanks for the video, I will need to repot my orchids soon so if I can remember then I will try using your method for one of them.
Styrofoam?? Nooooo. You lost me as soon as I saw that. It doesn't break down! It's horrible for the environment! Why use that when you can collect some rocks and get the same effect?
I mean it’s not good you’re right but it’s just plastic in the end, if it even was styrofoam and not perlite… the amount used in a single shipping box would use enough for like 100 plants. Styrofoam is useful for lots of stuff and you can pluck it out of the trash. That trash, by the way, just gets dumped in a hole, course it takes loads of gas for the trucks and dozers and all the equipment to handle it… The saying is, reduce, reuse, recycle… that’s the order of importance, reusing is far better than recycling, and we can’t really recycle Styrofoam or plastics in an effective manner.

I tried this last year... my orchids were almost dead and this saved them! I used oak bark in the mix... thansk for sharing 😉
You're welcome!
Why do you have to change out the moss yearly? Can I keep the old moss and re-energize it? Your video has saved many orchids!😊

How do you wash the moss? With just water and wring it out and let it dry?
The moss you collected near the fir trees was not spagnum as you said.

I have sterilized the Spanish moss hanging from my Florida trees by microwaving it for a few minutes. I think it is the easiest way.
@@theresastratton-boyle6151 Thank you!

many people don't use pine bark. I've found orchids don't like pine bark at all. I stay away from it.

can I use hay alternate moss??
I think Hay or straw would degrade to quick. just my opinion.
I think !Styrofoam is not good for orchid roots .
It is never appropriate to remove living plants from natural environments and moss is not an essential part of orchid mixes.
Using styrofoam is damaging to plants.
