A full tour of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England starting at the Captain Cook statue and the Whale Bone arch and going on a full Whitby walking tour down through Whitby Bay, across Whitby Bridge and through the town to the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey.
Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Scarborough borough of North Yorkshire, England. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has a maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was where Captain Cook learned seamanship.
Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed with the arrival of the railway in 1839. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by the proximity of the high ground of the North York Moors national park and the heritage coastline and by association with the horror novel Dracula. Jet and alum were mined locally, and Jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.
In this video we will take you to see Whitby Beach, and the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey.
The ruin at the top of the East Cliff is the town's oldest and most prominent landmark. Other significant features include the swing bridge, which crosses the River Esk and which is sheltered by the grade II listed East and West piers.
The town's maritime heritage is commemorated by statues of Captain Cook and William Scoresby, as well as the whalebone arch that sits at the top of the West Cliff. The town also has a strong literary tradition and has featured in literary works, television and cinema, most famously in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula.

How do you keep the camera so smooth & steady?
Thanks for sharing, I hope to visit next year!
That is the old Market Square it was often used on Heartbeat with greengrass and his Fish and Chip van
Goth weekend in Whitby is brilliant, and they all have a really good time. Live music, especially folk music is everywhere.
This is true and I'm definitely going to film it the next time it's on Tony so stay tuned!
I know once I was a goth t was creept
Yes, my sister (From Denver Colorado) and I ( From Southern California) visited for two days back in April of 2017, loved every minute of it and would go back anytime. Best fish & chips in the world as well as a wealth of history, plus Whitby is my last name, so there's some family history there!
Ahhh yeah just noticed your surname Steve! How interesting - never met a Whitby before!
Greetings from the UK - hope you are safe and well and thank you for watching my channel!
The greatest seaside town fishing village in england 🇬🇧 and a bonus of count dracula abney so much to see up the 199 steps always and all around whitby a great day out and a brillant place to go there for holiday from anywhere in the world 🌎 another great video from a humble utuber always
Thank you so much ❤️❤️
I've watched a few of your videos now after only discovering them today. Obviously they're excellently filmed and really give the impression of being there.
BUT the thing I love most about them is your cheery and positive outlook, your comments are great and you always see the best of things, it makes the videos even more enjoyable. Thank you!
I'm a local, love to see the town getting some good press, even if the streets are flooded with tourists at the moment...
Thank you! Hopefully things will calm down very soon and get a bit more sensible
You live in a beautiful town..I was in Whitby last week love the place..
Better tourists then the usual 90 year old trouts that walk around filling the air with a damp urine smell , that’s what I think of when I think of Whitby old smelly piss and overpriced frozen fish
b bb You sound like on of those old grumps to me mate.
@@EwokPilot why because I complained the whole town is full of old people who stink of piss ?
My wife lived here when we met, we've been married 27 years now and still occasionally visit Whitby. Great video, brings back some very happy memories, thank you. :-)
Ahhh that's fantastic to hear thank you Roy!
Love your walking tours, Whitby is now on our list to visit
Perfect feedback thank you ❤️
I like the entirety of this coastline - Scarborough, Whitby, Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood's Bay. Many childhood holiday memories. Of course, other coasts of Britain are lovely and interesting, too.
Agreed. I'm a Yorkshire lad so I have a natural favouritism for the Yorkshire coastline
@@GimbalWalkTV Haha I suspected that we might have a difference of Roses. I was brought up in Lancashire and was often taken to Blackpool, Fleetwood, Southport or Morecombe. My first visit to the Yorkshire coast was to Robin Hood's Bay 62 years ago (see my comment on your video there). As a teenager, I developed a love for York and around Ripon (Fountain's Abbey for example) and Skipton. I have lived around the UK (Aberdeen, Liverpool, Bristol, Plymouth, Sunderland and the Midlands). I have visited many parts of the world but I now live in Thailand.
Got a house up for sale in staithes
@@annasciara9577 Nice!! That should sell in double quick time!
I went to Whitby last year and I’m at Whitby right now, I arrived yesterday!
Have a great time Grace!!
Gimbal Walk TV thank you so much
As a kid holidayed at Saltwick Bay. Walked the short distance to whitby to see the unloading of the fishing boats. Live in Australia now but when in the UK always go to Whitby. We now have a tradition. There is a house on this video just before the 199 steps, it has very small Red door at 8 min 08sec I have photographed my son next to it, then 10 years later my daughter and in 2014 myself. Next trip it is my wife's turn if I can persuade her. 😁
Ah that’s such a cool thing to do - always looks great when you put the photos side by side!
I absolutely love Whitby. It's my favourite place in the world 100%.
Well said! Great place
I thoroughly recommend a trip to Whitby.. I'm too old to go anywhere these days and these dvds make my day. Thank you Mr Gimbal xxx
You're welcome Maureen - lots more to come too
I lived up the coast from Whitby, in Marske. Love Whitby, Staithes, Runswick Bay etc. Ran wild as a kid on the beach, got purple legs going to school in shorts in the winter. Snow on the beach was fun. Anyone watching this should take a trip to the North East. Great video Sir ! Going to take a few of my buddy's to Whitby in July on our motorcycles. They have never been to Yorkshire/Cleveland . I have lived in Devon for 40 years now
Your buddys will love you for showing them the Yorkshire coast
Absolutely my favourite place on the Yorkshire coast, closely followed by Scarborough... Great video.
Lovely video of a lovely township. Great soundtrack as well. After climbing those steps, I realise why there are so many gravestones up top!
Thank you.
ha ha you're not wrong about the killer steps!! 🤣
Stunning! Haven't been to Whitby in years, not sure I could tackle the 199 steps now but have had the pleasure many times. I love Whitby. Thanks for sharing.
You're really welcome - thank you for watching my channel!
Even though I now live 3,500 + miles away, I still need a Whitby "Fix" once in a while and watch this video!! Some of the shops I remember are still there, others are new but the buildings - thank goodness - are still the same. Thank you for posting this
You did a great job! Of course, you could slow down as you pass the shops so I can get a better look!!!!!
Thank you - noted - I'll be heading back that way soon so will do just that!
Thank you so much for these video makes lock down just a little more bearable..
You’re welcome thank you so much for watching my channel ❤️
Love this place lived there for a while and revisit every year for the last twenty years
You have good taste - it's a lovely place!
I Lived here for 7 years on and off. I am originally from Sheffield but consider Whitby and Staithes and the area my real Home.
My American Wife calls it God's Country.
Been in Los Angeles for 3 years and the only beach to compare is Aliso California.
We are coming back to live in England and will probably be Staithes just up the road .
Thank you very much for your amazing videos, It Really helps me to combat the home sickness and also of course it's a beautiful place.
Kindest Regards
Beautiful place&lovely walk around Whitby ,,,,,,,,,bg ,,,,,
Thank you!
Thanks for showing me Whitby...long wanted to visit it, and as a Dracula nut it was extra special, sadly, even if I could visit, wouldn’t be able to tackle those steps up to the Abbey.
Those steps are in my nightmares now Margaret!! 🤣🤣
My wife and I have been to Whitby many times. We love it. It is a class holiday destination.
Agreed! Where do you usually stay?
We have stayed at the corner guest house, the Royal and two other guest houses that I can't remember the name's of
I love whitby but never seen the abbey .thank you for showing me it x
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching my channel ❤️
I know Whitby well. Although l was born and grew up in Bristol, and now live in Somerset, my father came from Whitby and l still have relatives there. Beautiful place. Not sure when or if l will be able to visit again, so it was lovely to share this walk.
Thank you Mary.
Have a lovely week ❤️
Brilliant! My screen saver is the view from halfway up the steps! LOVE WHITBY!
Perfect!
Thank you for this. I went to Whitby nearly 40 years ago and haven't been back as it's a long way to travel from London. At the time I went with my husband and in-laws. At the time I thought it was a lovely seaside town with a lot of charm. Remember getying a fresh mackerel off one of the fishing boats. Is there still a fishing industry there? . I'd love to go back to see it. I can recall the shops selling jet which was worn in victorian times as a sign of mourning, some were carved. Absolutely delightful. Thank you again.
Ah thank you so much! You're really welcome!
wHITBY is 3.5 hours by train from London , do it often , whats the matter with you ,40 years???
Thanks for this informative video. You did a great job walking up the 199 steps. The view is fantastic.
Thanks for watching
That was great thankyou❤️
You’re welcome 😊
Beautiful! All downhill from here!! Thanks for taking us along- from SW PA USA
We visit Yorkshire every few years, and always visit Whitby when we’re there. A fantastic little town with lots of history and loads of other great things to do, and if you’re there on a sunny day it’s just marvellous 👍
It really is!
Great video. I know Whitby very well as I used to live up the road at Guisborough and Whitby, Scarborough and Bridlington Were all days out for us. Thanks for the nostalgic tour. (PS I live in Devon now and trips home are infrequent)
Thank you Brian! I'm heading for Devon soon to film a few there!

Well said Anthony - fantastic place!
Just found your walks and will be watching all of them! Refreshing, Informative, relaxing. Just feels like we are walking there ourselves. I live in Knaresborough and love to visit Whitby. Never tire of its sights and smells. So glad of my discovery. My husband will enjoy because there is no talking, just music. Thank you from your newest fan, Carol

Lovely video of Whitby you captured everything fab about this seaside resort
Thank you so much Claire!
More on the way so subscribe if you can! 👍
Whitby, my favourite place in the world. I’m from further up the coast (Middlesbrough) but no longer live in the UK. A visit to Whitby is a must whenever we are in the UK. We visited Whitby last year and then drove to Scarborough. It’s been many years since I last visited Scarborough but I was very disappointed. Whitby never disappoints!!
Agreed!
Thank you for watching my channel 👍
Please don't misconstrue, but 51% of why I immediately subscribed is because of your choice of music. Your choices are impeccable. Well, the 49% is because of the sharpness, clarity of the visuals, the immense readability of the subtitles, and the relaxed, unhurried nature of your walks. It's like you're giving a friend a walking tour of a cherished place.
Very much appreciated. Thank you.
Thank you so much Dennis that's perfect feedback!
Am so happy you like the music - it makes me feel happy and upbeat when I hear it so drop it onto the videos to hopefully do the same to others!

Did the Coast2Coast September 2015 finishing at Robin Hoods Bay. We spent a day walking around Whitby, brilliant. Your video bought back memories for us from New Zealand. Cheers.
My aunt and uncle came from Whitby, he was a fisherman and as far as I know I still have 2 cousins who live there, we used to go and visit them when I was a kid, I absolutely love Whitby, from what I can remember it hasn't changed that much
It is very traditional and all the better for it too eh Kathleen! Beautiiful place!

Whitby is one of those places that everyone needs to visit!
Yes! Yes totally! It's beautiful
Marvellous! Love Whitby, get to go most years. I’ve played crazy golf and won a free game ,been up the lighthouse, on the pirate boat, bought Whitby jet jewellery from w. Hammond, bought fresh crab from the fish mongers, bought handmade soap, walked the steep Whitby steps, been in the church at top of steps, sat in that bench the couple was sat on and eaten at the best chippy restaurant fisherman’s wife. Yes that is a small market square on certain days. My son did a small piece near the whale bones and steps on Oliver’s get about if u want some tips lol. Another wonderful video, Keep on walking 😀
Fantastic - that sounds like a fun packed holiday jam packed with lots of activities and of course fish and chips - perfect!
I’m going in October 2020 and you’ve certainly wet my appetite!! 😀

Great video. Have enjoyed many lovely holidays in the past in Whitby staying locally in Goathland. Not been for sometime now and it is interesting to see the changes with new places to eat and drink. The Magpie would still take some beating though. Well done getting to the top of the Abbey steps. It makes me out of breath thinking about the last time I did that and wonder if I could still do it now.You have whetted my appetite to go back again. Many thenks.

Thanks for sharing this very interesting video. I found the music a bit intrusive this time but the text is brilliant, thanks, much better than a commentary. I visited Whitby on a day trip from Durham about 1985.
Keep well.
Thanks again

You're very welcome
Well done with the steps! We've been to whitby a few times and did the steps once. There's a briliant book by the late and much missed Peter Robinson called "Caedmon's Song" which is set in Whitby and Staithes. Every time i read it I want to go back. Thanks for another lovely video. Oh, and the fish and chips are brill!❤
