- The Defynnog Yew is an ancient specimen growing in the churchyard at St Cynog's Church. It may date back to the Iron Age and be around 2.500 years old. It may stand on a burial mound and could have been planted to highlight an ancient meeting place. The church is Norman however a burial stone preserved in the porch dates from Romano-British times. The tree has a second tree around 5 metres from it that is genetically identical and may be a result of layering via a branch touching the ground and developing roots that formed this second tree. It is a female tree with a single male brnach and a small area of albino growth. It may be the oldest tree in Wales or even the UK.
Thank you
You're welcome
what a glorious tree. imagine the things he has seen over the centuries...
Right enough
Any chance to document our venerable yew trees is much appreciated and welcome.
I added it to a Wikipedia article on your venerable yew.
There’s a yew in Somerset in a church yard deemed to be 4000 years old , very fond memories of playing under the yew in craigends Houston in the 60s
The Craigends Yew has seen some attention recently it was getting very overgrown by rhododendrons
The Boswell Aisle of the Auchenleck CoS church in East Ayrshire might interest you…as in Dr Johnsons chum, the Boswell family seat was/is still there although the avenue of Beeches was taken down some 25 years ago…
Thanks
Just a matter of time before some fool saws through the trunk for a tiktok video
Let's hope that your concern is a step too far for reality.
I have added the video to a Wikipedia article.
