  • What are the main differences between active and passive sensors?
▶ Passive sensors need an external power source to operate. Examples include strain gauges, thermistors, and RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors).
▶ Active sensors, however, generate their own power and don't need an external source. A common example is a thermocouple.
Remember, while all sensors are transducers, not all transducers are sensors. Food for thought!

I think it would be more precise to say that an active sensor does not require external power to generate response to stimulus. Because we have to use signal conditioning which requires external power.

I have different definition of active sensors.
