I had this happen once, except it didn’t take me to my destination, instead drove around for around an hour and then finally it pulled over. Yes, i could have used the pullover button, but it was kinda funny to see what it did. Awesome video as always!

42:55 i assume that's probably allowed in the States? (speeding up to make it past the yellow light). In my country it's illegal unless you're not able to stop in time or do a safe, predictable stop. That sounds a bit ambiguous for a traffic rule but for most people it's pretty clear: yellow light is stop, regardless if you can make make it past in the yellow state, but if you can't do a safe and timely stop you are allowed to (step on the gas pedal) and make it pass.
It may vary by state or region, but as far as I know-as long as you don't cross the red you're good. Though, it is best practice to slow down if reasonably possible
Free rides are nice! I have such a long chapter dedicated to me! lol. I’ll be in LA tomorrow but I don’t n ow if I’ll have time for a ride. I may use your referral code you posted on X.
Also another thing to point out is if you take a ride in a waymo never sit in the drivers seat (as the person who touched the controls in the clip did. I am unsure how he even managed to sit in the driver seat as the drivers door is locked and the car usually detects people in the drivers seat pulls over and contacts the support service ) as if anything happens you could be considered the driver (and waymo could place the blame on you). Also their are cameras inside the car which record video (and sound).
As I was reading the pull over confirmation message, I read the last part where it said that to edit or end the ride you have to do it in the app. I went oh uh and read it again lol. Welp, looks like waymo didn't want to let you go!
23:30 they double park where a bus is already blocking half the lane, to avoid having to walk an extra 50 feet. In california someone would have rammed them.
I Think that waymo sometimes later will restrict changing stops , because it will cost them a lot if people just drive around the city unlimited times , it's like saying to taxi driver okay I changed my mind please drive me somewhere else without paying him more. also I guess we will never get Robo taxis in Germany lol
@@SiIverDragon Now that's an interesting point. I'm gonna try to ride as long as I can-so if they would just let me add more stops, that would give them a better estimate of when the car will be free next.
Loved the intro, but I didn't get any two-stepping JJ Rick's, or JJ singing a slow southern ballad at a Karaoke microphone. Please work one or both of these into your future trips to Austin!
Thanks for the interesting video. I've seen these around occasionally, but I live just out of the service zone, so I don't see them much. I did notice a couple of things I would gripe to support or the dev team about: 1) There were a few illegal turns. Unless otherwise marked, turning from one road through an intersection onto another road, you are supposed to turn into the first lane. There were several occasions when this car turned into the second lane. Yeah, everyone does it, but it's not legal. For one of these instances, the car even crossed a solid line. That's a bigger no-no. The other gripe I have you sort of hinted at: the turn signal. The turn signal should not be engaged before an intersection that comes prior to the place the lane change is intended. That's actually a safety issue because other drivers could interpret the turn signal as a notice of intent to turn at that intersection. That clearly was not what the car intended. In one case, the turn signal was on to signal a lane change on the other side of a red light. One final point: I noticed the garbage cans placed in the road were not indicated on the display. Orange cones are. Why not garbage bins? What are the odds the car would hit one? If it can avoid them because it sees them, shouldn't it show them? If 1205 West 9th Street is in the service road, try going eastbound from there. There's a huge tree growing in the middle of the street. Another interesting place if there is oncoming traffic would be Hardy Drive between Richcreek Rd and Pasadena Dr. Not sure if that's in or out of the service zone. This is interesting because it's about half the width of the other streets. Edit: I just checked the service area, and Hardy Drive is outside the service area.
@Brillig2 You make a good point; the rider display is rather selective about what it shows. The car absolutely sees the bins, they're just not marked, as you say. Thanks for this great analysis!
@@JJRicks I have a question about the service area. I've seen these mostly north of the service area (over a year ago), because that's where I live, probably during an evaluation period. Are you allowed to go outside of the service area? I ask that partly because I also see scooters show up out of their service areas. Same with Car2Go. For Car2Go, though, they were not autonomous vehicles, so you could take them out of the service area, but I think the ride had to be ended inside the service area.
@@Brillig2Generally speaking no, though it is possible to "trick" the cars to exit the service area every once in a while. However once you do that, your app will just freeze and the car will make its way back as soon as possible

If Waymo had an unlimited battery, you'd be like Charlie on the MTA, riding the streets of Austin forever....

The second pullover even showed the drive away countdown immediately, the car must be very stressful after kidnapping you twice.
Why did it take you the long way to Walmart? Was the destination added mid-ride? Sorry, I didn't pay full attention haha
