  • In this talk Dr. Wallace explains the ways in which synthetic biologic will help us tackle climate change. Dr. Stephen Wallace is an Associate Professor of Biotechnology and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. He received a DPhil in Organic Chemistry from the University of Oxford and is a designer of microorganisms with a drive to create new biotechnologies that can enable the manufacture of chemicals such as pharmaceuticals and cosmetics from sustainable materials as opposed to fossil fuels. Research from his lab has achieved the bio-production of nylon precursors from plant biomass and paper waste, and the production of vanilla flavouring from plastic waste. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Synthetic biology doesn't just reprogram microbes. It's also construction of therapeutics or even creation of new organs or eventually living prosthetics for handicapped people. The latter has been my dream for years.

It’s also used to create smaller people to lesson carbon footprint and create food allergies to decrease our meat consumption.
It can also be used to predispose a population to being sickly…like a bioweapon.

"Almost everything you see which is not made of metal, wood, stone, glass, wool or cotton is made from petroleum. Even products made from these natural materials tend to be supplemented with petroleum."

Synthetic bio😢 , I am a bioscience/life science, undergrad (with a triple major , zoology , botany and chemistry) , where should I go biotech, bioinformatics, environmental science, immunology every Ted talk convinces me from one to another

But have a clear goal in mind. Follow one hate none. U have to sacrifice 99 things to get one thing.

How old are you? you seem young, smart, but young. Talk with your family and talk with other people who are interested in your same line, use forums etc, but base your choices and conclusions on how much relativity it has to what you want to change in your community (where ever you want to end up)

The most important thing that should be on everyone mind currently should be how to invest in different sources of income that doesn't depend on the government. Especially with the current economic crisis around the world 🌍. This is still a good time to invest in various stocks gold, silver and digital currencies
