I came out as transgender to my whole family today. And I was accepted by them. This is such an important day for me and I feel like listening to Against Me! is fitting for such an occasion.
Update 2021 August 2nd: legally changed my documents in my home country Lithuania (changed my name, surname, sex marker to male aligning ones)!! I've been fighting for this for YEARS, I'm so happy I finally did it!! 🎉🎉🎉

I know this comment is coming months after you posted yours, but, even as a stranger, I'm so happy for you! I'm also overjoyed about your family being accepting. That's huge. One of my good friends was flat out rejected by her family and hasn't talked to them since. She's legitimately one of the most caring, wonderful, amazing people I know and it breaks my heart.
I hope you and your (awesome and open-minded) family are doing well!

@@MsFuzzipoo Thank you so much, Emily. Ever since I came out to them, it has been a slow progress towards real understanding. Sometimes it gets hard for all of us, but we are all doing our best because we care about each other too much. We just can't let something like this get between us!
But still, I was truly scared to tell them. I know they love me, but even so, I just couldn't know what their reaction would be. I actually expected my mom to reject me or even throw me out. I didn't worry about my dad so much because we're really close, so I told him first, and later everyone else. So I think I'm lucky that they're all so open-minded and understanding. I was totally preparing for a worst case scenario! :'D
And again, thank you so much for your support and kind words. It means a lot, even if we're strangers.

Although this is one of my favorites of theirs now, I hated this album when it was first released. I took it as a personal insult for some reason. I tried to make it about the music, how it just didn't mesh -- but it was about the message, it was about Laura's transition, it was about political correctness. I was scared to confront what I had always known was true, that I too was transgender. I could relate to every single lyric on this album and I absolutely hated Laura for making me confront that. I was in such hyper-denial mode at the time, and couldn't handle it. I gay/trans bashed not only myself but those that were just like me. I look back on that now, as an out-and-about trans woman, and I can't help but feel the oddest mixture of shame, regret, and laughter. LJG is an inspiration, a heroine, and a true trans soul rebel, and I'll love her forever for how much she's done for not only myself, but all of us. TTSR

I feel you so much. I still haven't overcome the trauma of repressing being trans and people denying not taking me seriously when I needed help the most. I still can't go to pride events and seeing people being happy and open about their identify still makes me feel a little bitter. But I'm slowly overcoming this and one day I will be openly trans without shame and guilt.

I was 13 when I first heard this; mostly closeted trans kid struggling with all sorts of issues. this song helped me a lot. I thought I understood the line "how would you even recognize me?" back then, I thought it was simply about changing appearances. But now, at 17 and almost two years through HRT, I realize that it's more about if a person still recognizes you as their friend, family member, lover, etc. Sure, I've been asked who I was by people I used to know, but what really stings is when those who say "oh okay cool, yeah I support you, this doesn't change anything" end up drifting further and further away. They feel like they can't relate to me anymore because they only recognize me as the "trans friend" and not "friend who has more to him than being trans". I think this line is about those around you thinking you're changing as a person because your appearance is changing. Stay alive everyone.

As a cis person, I absolutely support you, and I'm so sorry for what some other cis people are putting you through. I finally started living my life in full time girl mode about a month ago. (I was a slow roller, transition was hidden from most for a while) After my first week i heard this song and just had tears of uncontrollable emotions. All the work, pain, sacrifice, waiting, loss, humiliation, envy, and the like just kinda sorta let go. I took a look back and saw how drastically my life had changed already and started weaping. instead of fighting it i just let it flow out of me, crying so hard I was screaming but nothing was coming out. It was that one line "how would you even recognize me" that did it. When it was over i found myself having a new kind of strength and confidence about who I am.

I quit smoking and severely cut back on drinking. The smoking is the biggest thing. I already have a good A cup going and I've lost 75 pounds. You are right, that it takes work. It takes a lot of work to transition.

This song and video have got me crying...
I'm a half-closeted AMAB femme enby, in that all my friends know but my family don't. This past month I've been living with friends (one of whom is a trans guy) who have respected my pronouns and used my new name and it has been wonderful. But due to my financial situation under covid i will be moving into my gran's place in a few days.
I love my grandparents to pieces, they are so lovely and supportive, but I know I am not ready to tell them yet, I know they wouldn't understand, and I know that even tho they would try to understand, it will hurt for them to try and change the habits of 24 years... so in a few days, I will be stepping back into that fucking closet, until I have the guts to tell the people who mean the most to me who I really am
Thank fuck I have Against Me! to help me along my journey, I love them so much

I came out around the time that this song was released. Being a trans teenager in the 2010s was torture, something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. But, here I am 7 years on hormones and hormone blockers, 3 months post-op, about to be married to a straight man who loves me for the woman I am. Every day I woke up and wished I wasn't born in my body, tried everything I could to be seen for me. As cliche as it sounds, it does get better. I'm so glad to see how far the trans movement has gone just in the past few years. Right now is probably the safest, most comfortable, most accepting time to be trans there ever has been in human history. Don't let the media fool you, there will always be hateful people in the world, but I think its safe to say they are now the shrinking minority, at least in America. The resources that trans people have today I would have killed for back in the day. Transition sucks, its awkward, painful, confusing, and lonely. But once you get past your final hurdles, whatever they may be, and can finally just live your life as yourself... there's no better euphoria.

  • @OMGThePeSt

I understand that this is about being trans and the difficulties and struggles that come along with it, and overcoming it. I just wanted to say that so my next comment didn't sound like I was down playing the actual song meaning and album. I'm straight and whatever the politically correct? Term is for it, cis-gender? I love 'Against Me!' They are hands down my favorite band. When Laura came out I was wondering how the music would change and if I'd still be able to relate to it and enjoy it as I did. I'll still say that the old folk-punk sound, Florida local feel was by far my favorite era of the band, however, this would honestly have to be one of my favorite songs by them, and maybe even my favorite album. My love for Against Me! And/or Laura has not changed a single bit. I love this like I am sure I will love the future direction of the band. I'm happy that trans people have this, among other things, more and more, it's being brought to the spotlight and mainstream. This album is very important for that. To me though, and I'm sure I may speak for most straight & cisgender fans, the reason I can still relate to this, enjoy it and love it is because in the grand scheme of things, this song and most of the album is about change. It's about being at war with yourself and overcoming those demons. Though not trans or having problems relating to that, I've still got a bunch of issues and have been 'against myself' for a long time. Everyone has their own war to fight and in generalities, that is why I love this. The time has come for change and this song is so beautiful because of that. Against Me! Changed my life, I love you guys and gals. You change lives, thank you for that. Please never stop doing what you do.

    lyrics:
The ease of your pose, the grace of your silhouette
The way that your shoulders meet your slender neck
Where would we be without all the distance?
You know I'm already just a skeleton
I don't have the heart to match the one pricked into your finger
Of things made to be destroyed
    All moments meant to pass
    Don't wanna live without teeth
    Don't wanna die without bite
I never wanna say that I regret it
Never wanna say that we grew apart
And never wanna say that the feelings changed
I don't have the heart to match the one pricked into your finger
Of things made to be destroyed
    All moments meant to pass
Chipped nail polish and a barbed wire dress
Is your mother proud of your eyelashes,
    Silicone chest, and collagen lips?
How would you even recognize me?
I don't have the heart to match the one pricked into your finger
Of things made to be destroyed
    All moments meant to pass
I don't have the heart to match the one pricked into your finger
No more troubled sleep, there's a brave new world that's raging inside of me
I don't have the heart to match the one pricked into your finger
This, too, will soon slip out of reach
This, too, will soon come to an end

it's been 2-3 years since I last discovered this band and this song. sucks to say how much things still hurt. I've been 8 months on hrt and I only feel awful. I feel even less feminine. tho at least I have slight brease growth.

  • @ddownpound6

"All things made to be destroyed, all moments meant to pass"
Still love this song so much. It resonates with me even if I can't relate with the trans aspect, then again that's only named specifically in the 3rd verse which is probably why.
FML666, Osama, & Black me out are the best on the album hands down....in my opinion, of course.
