- The novelty of Judy Garland: Live at the London Palladium is the spectacle of the great entertainer sharing the stage with her up-and-coming daughter. In November 1964 Liza Minnelli was not yet 20 and not yet a Broadway success. She looks it: the coltish, appealingly gawky girl is still pretty raw (at one point after a costume change she yanks off her earrings just before launching into a song), and Garland seems alternately proud of and bemused by her. The video is pretty raw, too, a rough black-and-white affair that can best be described as serviceable in quality. However, fans of this brand of showbiz razzmatazz will be satisfied with the duets between the women (especially trading verses on a medley of "Happy Days Are Here Again" and "Get Happy"). Judy opens the show with the reliable chest sweller "Once in a Lifetime" (no relation to the Talking Heads tune) and delivers a tutorial in song dynamics with "The Man That Got Away." She appears rather shrunken and tired but still comes on like a trouper, fending off the audience's constant heckling for "Over the Rainbow" (as though she might forget it?) before finally handing the song back to them as a touching sing-along. This was Garland's last appearance at the Palladium. It's also a passing of the torch to Liza, who would later become the kind of polished dynamo embodied by her mother, more than capable of holding down her own one-woman shows.
God, the hair stands up on the back of my neck when Judy starts singing off stage. Just amazing!
listened to this hundreds of times and yet I always get chills when Judy comes out... she was magnificent
Can you imagine being in the audience that night? Two of the greatest performers to ever grace the stage, singing together!
Aww judy signaling liza at the end to take a bow is soooo nice. Shes a proud mama u can tell
The most fantastic thing about this performance is the incredible energy that comes from both Judy and Liza's love for each other and the energy of competition.
Liza has spoken in detail about this night. How she sang 3 or 4 songs before this duet and the crowd was just going wild. She could see her mother in the wings becoming less and less enthusiastic because Judy realized they weren't just her fans anymore and Liza (Whose voice was now stronger) was stealing the show.
Judy stalled on purpose to come out (this is when you hear Liza call "Mama? Mama?")
Liza would later recall "When she walked out on that stage she was not Mama. She was Judy Garland!"
The chemistry that night created a show no one will ever forget!
Liza has an ego as big as all out doors. Liza has always hated it because she wasn't as good as her mom, and was always denying that she made it because of her mom. Her acceptance speech at the Oscars "I know you gave this to me", or in the movie That's Entertainment they had Fred Astaire introduce Liza who was going to talk about Judys films, and Fred said "she made in on her own, yes she did". Well no she didn't. Being Judy's daughter opened tons of doors for Liza. I can't see what others see in Liza, singing wise, she's ok at best. She does seem to hit some notes that are real clunkers. She's loud but not melodic. Even Judy said it herself during a radio interview on April 23, 1962, "Lorna is my singer, and Liza is my dancer". Liza could never steal a show from her mom, especially in England.
We will never see anything like again in our lifetime. Well trained talent
Do you remember that interview's name?
@@terrygrant3467 I totally agree with everything you say. Liza will never acknowledge she learned anything from her mum, thats bull, her every move and voice she has tried to outshine her mother but she knows she can't. There is only 1 once in a life time Judy Garland. Sorry Liza thats not you. Its your mother. RIP Judy you sweet soul 🙏
You can tell, both women love one another dearly
It takes a legend, to make a star.
Saw the entire concert, Judy is at her game!! Liz's is very good too. Peace
I loved how JUDY GARLAND showed up on the stage...this is a powerful moment in history.
i visit her show last year in Belgium, and believe me it was awsome!!!
Great singers come and go. But in our lifetime we are lucky enough to get two of them, one generation after the other. It's an amazing thing.
AWESOME!!!! I love when history is found on tape!
Unreal.
One of my all time favorites.
I miss this kind of talent, showmanship, and JOY!
Me too. That is why we turn to You Tube. Videos to watch them perform.RIP Judy and Thanks .
Wow,,,,,,, i didn't even born yet . but judy WAS an AMAIZING PERFORMANCER . Rip
This gave me major chills!!! Can you imagine how incredible it must have been to be in that audience!?!?!
Judy Garland was the greatest talent that ever lived, why would anyone think she could be jealous of one person, let alone her own daughter, AND for me, EVERYONE fades totally away the second Judy steps on stage. It's just exciting waiting for her to step into that spotlight. Judy is thrilling to watch.!!!
The most accurate statement so far. Well said.
Two of the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please people, have some respect. They were both great singers. Thanks for posting a good memory .
Marvelous!
Two of the most valuable voices in the world!
You can't hear me, but I'm applauding you. Very well stated and it's true.
They didn't call Judy "The World's Greatest Entertainer" during her own lifetime for nothing!
Two such amazing a talented women in their glory together
@DancerSam01 These two ladies just oozed talent from every pore in their bodies. The were entertainers par exellence. Sadly it is unlikely that we will ever see their likes again.
beautiful !!!! two great singers .....
¡que hermoso! como dijo alguien esto si que es una joya
Meravigliosa e dolce Judy... no one like her
No, genes like that never come together twice,
So sad I am that it was waster in such a tragic way.
She is still rememberedd and remorsed by her fans many years later.
@Odette321 From Judy's earliest childhood on stage, the spotlight rarely off her, she HAD to center on the image she projected. And once the film studios hired and "wired" her (8 days a week on uppers to stay awake, lively and productive; then downers to crash land in dreamless, unrefreshing, unrecreative sleeps), and mercilessly criticized her appearance / tore her ego to shreds and made her lose her natural feminine youthful plumpness, amazing she survived at all.
Aww, tears are coming to my eyes. My own mother died of breast cancer two weeks ago, and I frequently had to leave her bedside to drive to school to rehearse for Hello Dolly. The night before she was taken to hospice, I sang "Hello, mama" like Liza did and it made her smile. =)
They both got the outstanding & powerful voice!!
thank you!
si.... great Judy with great Liza
thanks keep posting judy
it is very, very, very rare that the child of an unique star has the same talent. They all try, but it's one in a million. But here it comes true. Liza has the voice, the stage pressence. the charisma of her mother and the both of them - pure magic.
I'm in tears, I have no words
The stage presence and voice of each of these two women is utterly gobsmacking. Love it love it love it!
It's a show! But Isn't it lovely?
when judy started singing off stage, I started crying and I didn't stop throughout the performance. I wish she was still around, and I wish she had been happier when she was here. Thank god she had Liza, one part of her life that she enjoyed!
Wow! I never realized how much alike they sounded!!!
this is BEYOND marvelous!!!
Sensational! There are very few strong voices like that left in the world. Damn, they were good.

A mother and her Daugther singing together,
how lovely it is
Two absulete stunning superstars.Highest qualitu and talent.
love love love love love love etc etc etc etc etc etc
No, I meant that, at this moment, there are not that many people who can still sing like that and have as strong a voice as these 2 ladies had.
I know that Liza is still amongst the living, but I am not sure she could still sing as good as she did in 1964.
***"La rencontre inoubliables de deux "MONSTRES SACRÉS" more than a LEGEND !
Extraordinary !
wow! this video it's a treasure! very epic
They have had so much energy!!!
Beautiful
nAW!! so beautiful!!!
Judy was the best
they may be gay icons, but they are also much more than that...this upload is a treat, thanks so much for this.
Thanks for posting! If they only knew the future of videos. THIS should have been preserved with better sound and color like the crap we save today. Jonas Brothers in 3D?! Technology came too late for Judy, but whatever format you listen/see her in FAR surpasses in quality most entertainment today. Good talent shines through. And she DID her share of technicolor classics! When you think how the studio chopped up A STAR IS BORN////
***"La rencontre inoubliables de deux "MONSTRES SACRÉS"
Nothing compares to these two!
wonderful
Liza is giving you major KAY THOMPSON in her opening notes! OMG...love this!
Jeeze...These are Greats...what are we going to do when there's no more artists like this left.. it's now 2010 and there's only a handful of that can actually sing and being able to sing these days is saying alot!
@lovelessAndros simply amazing:-) What I wouldn`t give to have been there. I wish times like this would never end. Wish I had a time machine.

@Dirkdebruyne Thank You so Much!!! I've always known who they were. But I'm just now Searching for Music, be it Cd, DvD or old records :D Just bought the Cabaret Record for like $2.00. So glad to know this is all on some sort of entertainment form. Thanks Again :D
I never knew such a delight existed. Thank you!!!
I love this!
Beautiful!!
It was briefly considered. IMDB says that in pre-production (when Warners producers were still casting) they considered Judy for Rose and either Liza, Jane Fonda, or Ann-Margret (!) for Louise, but conflicts with Judy's recurring television specials on CBS (as well as her now well-publicized unpredictability) persuaded them to drop the idea. I would've loved to see it; I always thought it was, to quote a song, the role that got away.
They are just wonderful. I am as straight as they come and they are amazing. Not beautiful, not sexy (Liza in Caberet manages to be alluring without being sexy), just great vocal talent and great charisma.
Qué maravilla...
LOVE IT!!
this gives me chiLLLLLLs
fenomenal , madre e hija son maravillosas, wonderful womans, great
Duas divas!!!!❤❤❤❤
@laurelfan1 Are you serious. Everytime Liza sings you can clearly her Judy!!!

contidas. Outra raridade, este video. Cley Cormack.- Rio de Janeiro,Brasil 30/01/2014. OBS.- Tank you Geertje Oosterlynch. Beautiful video and post.
Nice. :)
@confusedandalone14 Even though Judy had a lot of problems, Lorna did feel loved by her mother.
@igccaribe I think it's interesting in looking at Judy's personality. She was not a consistent women. She had marriages that fluctuated, her weight fluctuated and her looks fluctuated. But one thing that remained consistent was her talent: her voice. So to see her up and coming daughter practically outshine her, and to see Judy get a little ticked off at that, to me is very interesting. All in all though, Judy and Liza had a great relationship.
Liza through the years is identical behaviour to her mother. Only 1 Judy Garland
Judy was very genrous to all her guests and especially to her Children. Some have said Judy was jealous of her daughter Liza. Not true Judy wasn't catty and always talked with great proud of Liza . Check Judy on the old tv show "whats my line" and with Barbara walters interview. Judy also made sure she woudl never be like her own mother who was jealous of Judy" because she had absolutely no talent." Judy said that to Barbara Walters in a 1967 interview on the TODAY Show. :-)
Very true statement it was Liza that was jealous of Judy but she will never be a match for her mother. Takes a true legend to make a star. RIP Judy you beautiful soul
That really would have been something if they were to have done that musical together.
