"Hear her voice go swinging like a hatchet through the trees" love that line
I really really like the opening instrumental. And the faster pace of the lyrics. And the beautiful melody of the chorus. This is just gorgeous all over.
I've been listening to all of their albums non stop, just repeatedly playing foxlore and coyote stories over and over. This album has put everything that I loved about their songs into it. It's just completely breathtaking, I've genuinely found my new favorite artist. Better than the others by far.
there were SO many moments where the vocals literally had my jaw on the FLOOR!! this album is like several punches to the gut, like stop!! stop!!! im already dead!!
LYRICS:
She woke me up at dawn
Soft spoken as a spider
Spinning webs of holy words while she was still asleep
Kill the moon beneath my window
Pull the covers tighter
And hear her voice go swinging like a hatchet through the trees
There’s a shadow at the back door
Somethings moving in the shade
She lights cigarettes like lanterns
For the darkness in my head
Nobodies ever loved me
Ever loved me
Nobodies ever loved me like she tells me she does
Ooh~~~ (a bunch of oos and ahs, it’s very pretty)
Tender as a bruise
Sharper than a razor
Wrap her tentacles around me like she’ll never let me go
Her fury shakes the rafters
But never in my favor
I’m trembling in the eye of the only storm I’ve ever known
The keys are in the back door
Somethings wailing in my chest
It eclipses every siren
And these sins that she’s confessed
Nobodies every loved me
Ever loved me
Nobodies ever loved me
So she tells me
Nobodies ever loved me
Nobodies ever loved me
Nobodies ever loved me like she tells me she does
I should be counting blessings
Something is better than nothing
Isn’t it isn’t it isn’t it
It’s close enough to perfect
Why does it hurt a little bit
A little bit
A little bit
Nobodies ever loved me
Never loved me
Nobodies ever loved me
Like she loves me
Nobodies ever loved me
Ever loved me
Nobodies ever loved me
Like she tells me she does
yess finally this is my favorite song from the new album
I just finished listening to the whole album and im feeling so many emotions rn,,, im so unbelievably happy and crying at the same time,,,,, Thank you so much, you guys really outdid yourselves with this album
Thank you for listening to the whole thing. Wow, that’s dedication. We appreciate fans like you so much.
AHHH I LOVE THIS ONE!!! The instrumental is so absolutely amazing and the lyrics “no ones ever loved me like she tells me she does” is so pretty and hurtful and amazing and I adore this whole song 😭 This whole song just gave me so much serotonin
Im so in love with this song!! Your music has such a unique raw emotion to it that I feel like I can't find anywhere else and listening to live recordings like this makes it even more noticeable! I listened to the album all day at work today and plan to listen to it for many days to come!
This song will always remind me of the filling station in Traverse City, & Isla standing up front by the stage facing the crowd playing her little guitar like she was in the band. I miss moments like that so much.
We miss moments like that, too.
YO THIS SLAPS
I have been sitting all day at work hitting refresh for this album and YOU GUYS DIDNT DISSAPOINT HOLY CRAP
Nobody might be my favorite song now lol
I've been listening to this song so much lately. It's simply stunning. The lyrics are fascinating and the melody only adds to the drama of the images the lyrics summon up.
The beginning reminds me a bit of Blue Oyster Cult, but also a bit of Fleetwood Mac, and yet it's unique enough to be immediately recognizable as the Crane Wives.
I cannot stress enough how much I adore the lyrics. The chorus in particular. At first, I thought the lines were from the other woman being sung about, telling the narrator that no one ever loved her like the narrator does. As the chorus develops its more clear that its from the narrator's perspective, but it hints at the other woman being someone who does not know how to love someone properly (without hurting them). There's so many hints that this relationship is probably abusive, at least verbally, but also the idea that the narrator has never been loved before and has trouble recognizing that this love is harmful. The bridge really speaks to this, especially with them giving the line "i should be counting my blessings" _should_ being the important word here. The narrator should be happy, but knows (even without previous experience) that something about this relationship isn't right.
The imagery is incredible. Every line gives me such vivid pictures of what's going on. Some of my favorites are: "soft as a spider" implying tenderness but also an underlying manipulativeness, "she lights cigarettes like lanterns / for the darkness in my head" using a harmful thing like a cigarette, but finding some guidance or light from it's burning... its a bit dark, but may also hint to the narrator being burned with cigarettes by the woman. And for course the final chorus "nobody ever loved like tells me she does", is a lot like someone being told they will never find happiness outside of a relationship with an abuser.
If you got through my rambling, I hope you appreciated it at much as I appreciated picking apart and listening to this song. It's a fantastic example of why I love this group so very much.
