It came out really nice, I like the thinner handle without the grooves, and it is cool that it looks like that handle has been there for years, thanks for sharing it, William.

@JoseGonzalez-yx6vm Thank you, Jose. I like the way it turned out. It could have been better, but it's not bad for never having done that before.

I really like seeing and doing restorations on knives and other tools to bring them back to life. Great job William.

The more you oil and wax the leather the better it will protect the leather, looks good. 🐯👍

@gizmocarr3093 Thank you. It sucked up my first coat of mineral oil, so I switched to boiled linseed oil.

    Well William:
Patience and Fortitude rewarded. Congratulations, you did a really nice job. If you decide to work on the leather a bit more, I’ve had excellent results with Kiwi leather lotion. I use it on boots, knife sheaths, etc. works well. 👍👍

@@bishop6426 Thank you. I've been putting petroleum jelly on the handle. The leather is absorbing it and darkening as I use it. Once it gets enough jelly, I'll put some boiled linseed oil on.

Pretty impressive. I was going to say it looks like it was worked hard and put away wet but then you actually have photos of when it was worked hard and put a way wet. Really a fantastic job. I think the reason a space developed is simply something that happens when you peen. It's one of those physic laws or something. The who equal and opposite reaction. You're not tapping the leather, you're tapping the tang the tang is invariably getting pushed through the washers and are hitting the end cap where they can't move anymore. This causes further compression of the leather washer (plenty of internal space with the washers). At least that's what I think is happening.
I think you came up an excellent solution. (inserting a another faux washer before sanding). Again very impressive. And now you can honestly call it an Air Force Veteran's Survival Knife! The knife is truly a survivor brought back from useless junk to a functional blade! Congratulations!

@KnifeChatswithTobias Thank you, Tobias. One of the reasons why I didn't polish the handle is that it would look out of place. I've been putting petroleum jelly on the handle, and it's darkening up nicely. The handle being slightly shorter actually fits my hand better. I've been enjoying carrying and using it all day. It doesn't cut cardboard as well as a box cutter, but it will cut.

Excellent job on the restoration. Forgive me but I'd have polished the leather a little more!😁

@@tomweingart2337 I understand. I figured I could always polish it later if I felt like it.
