- REALLY nice upgrade here. I took a drab and compression-laden picture and made it shine. Topaz was used to clean, enhance and upscale the picture, while Resolve was used to fix contrast issues and to bring out the color again and make it POP. I miss those old Denver uniforms
ALL the old uniforms were better than the current garbage
So do I. Some of these alternate uniforms are too much. Keep to the tradition
Very true!! I also miss those full cage middle bar face masks! They looked like real football players then.
yep, im 56, I miss the NFL of those years, hard hitting, SF was so good, how did they ever lose?
Those are king
Dick Enberg. Another legendary commentary performance. Miss this. Articulate. Can't mistake his voice. Oh my!
Enberg was awesome
And Merlin Olsen was one of the best color commentators there ever was.
Both seemed lost. Numerous mistakes.
LOVE DICK ENBERG HIM AND PAT SUMMERALL MY TWO FAVORITE
@Larry_Harvilla Late Merlin Olsen played 15 seasons, pro football (1962 thru 1976-1977). He was DL/spent his entire career with Rams
Watching this 1988 NFL game at 1:06 AM. Thanks for sharing it.
Refreshing to watch a game where there is no hands going up looking for a flag on every incomplete pass or hit on the QB
I miss the 80's so much! This video is so wonderful. THANK YOU!
So do I. The 80s were the shit! I was 10 years old during this game.
…me 3, best time to be a kid, best time to be ALIVE!!!!
Win or Loss, i still love watching these 49ers teams of the 83-98 timeframes!
Yep I agree. Back then they didn’t choke big games like the chump teams now
@@anthonycristofani6856agree back then they always won the superbowl now they always loose
The uniform and equipment evolution is incredible. The shoulder pads and leg pads got smaller and the helmets got bigger.
And the league got worse
Yet they're making more money than ever
No need for an evolution in equipment when you outlaw hard hitting.
@@kevinfinnerty8414hey at least star players will have longer careers
The 1989 Niners the greatest team of all time on both sides of the ball. Glad Elway finally got his rings a real baller💯💪
He was, but he was mediocre in his first SB, downright awful in his second.

Man Elways Arm was unreal. Die hard Bronco fan and dont remember his arm in the early yrs as I was 4 yrs old this game.
As a young kid I got to see Elway play 4 times in High School at Granada Hills HS, a suburb of Los Angeles. His receiver Paul Bergmann went on the UCLA and other Pro Football teams....They DOMINATED the competition! As a youngster knowing he played Baseball well too he was a true "SuperMan". I, and others, aspired to be half as good. I had a blast trying in Jr High, HS and beyond.
Unreal
Elway got blown the F out in 3 SBs.
Without RB Terrell Davis? Elway retires with ZERO SB Titles
RB Terrell Davis in the 1997 & 1998 Season's Playoffs COMBINED???!!!??
(1,049 rushing yds/ 12 tds/ 58 TOTAL1stDwns!!!!/ averaged 142.5 rushing yrs per Playoff Gm in both 97&98 Playoffs!!!!)
It took RB Davis to help Elway FINALLY win a couple Super Bowls.
How ignorant are you?? Joe Montana couldn’t take those Bronco teams to 3 super bowls. Elway carried those teams. He was a One Man Army. Montana was nothing except he was surrounded by an All Star team. Dan Marino actually had better talent around him in Miami and one of the best coaches ever: Don Shula. How many super bowls did Marino go too?? Elway was the Man! When he finally got an O-Line and a running game. He won Back to back.

I use Topaz VEAI a lot too. Are you using Proteus? I can barely tell.
Yep!
Thanks for this. I’ve never seen a good quality video of this game.
Absolutely fantastic job!!! This looks like it was just played!!! Thank you so much Dave!!!
It looks absolutely amazing
So many legends involved in this game, not just players, but coaches and commentators as well.
I always loved seeing the football games when you still had the baseball in field
Stumbled on your channel...EXCELLENT quality...didnt plan on watching a week 6 game between Montana & Elway tonight but here I am 😊...the few segments with commercials in them made me feel 18 again and reminded me the world was once a pretty nice place...thanks for those 2 plus hours. 🙂
FANTASTIC vivid color restoration!
Man I forget how strong of an arm Elway had. The football looks like it’s being shot out of a cannon or a missile
Jeez you made a telecast from 1988 look HD quality!! Great job man. You earned a sub brother.
As much as i like your 70s Restorations its your 80s ones i live for
I second that notion :)
I totally agree!
@@astrostar49i 3rd that
BRO why do i LOVE! watching these old school NFL games? must be the uniforms or everything just looks so raw!
12:32 The fan with white polo shirt and sunglasses is pumped 😂😂😂
Another highlight in the Hall of Fame career of Steve Young. This game was like a war of attrition. Not a work of art but you could see the intensity of both teams.
Excellent enhancement, Dave. I love those NBC broadcasts in the '80s.
Haha. That second pick was totally on Rice. First one was almost as good as a punt. But regardless, 0-3 with 2 picks is atrocious.
Dave "Picasso" Volsky does it again. A masterpiece.
What a gorgeous copy. Thank you so much!
I love these videos and I love the Broncos win or lose since 1968. I knew Jack Elway Sr. & John Elway for a long time serving them in really nice restaurants in Denver.
Elway was probably the most talented QB ever. Arm was unreal.
no, mahomes is much better.
@zackkorth2410 NO QB in this weak ERA of the NFL, No QB knows what its like to take a real hit or run for your life from Killers like Howie Long, Lawrence Taylor, Mike Singletary, Reggie White...You could literally pull someone around the field by a face mask before a flag was thrown...TODAY you can't sneeze in a QB's direction without a roughing the passer penalty...With today's rules protecting the QB's Marino could have thrown 60 TDs and 6,000 yds a season...period....
@@zackkorth2410If Elway played today in Andy Reid’s offense he’d throw for 10,000 yards.
@@zackkorth2410 nope. Your wrong. Elway is way more talented.
@@frankk.7761 nah he sucked, mahomes is the best to ever play
Those old Broncos helmets were amazing. They really pop in this video! Thank you for posting this
Montana would exact a pound of flesh for this game the next time they met in New Orleans .
This game was after they played each other in the SB. Dorsett was traded from Dallas in the off-season.
@@marka.graffakasnakebitenat3736 NO. This is 1988 the SB was Jan.28,1990,
The good old days when fans were not involved with every damn thing. and the game was much better. Miss the old NFL.
What fans?
Fans these days are annoying.
I like the newer days when Mahomes can go for his 3peat :)
Watching games like this when I was younger always made me want to move out west...and now I live in the Bay Area! Absolutely loved listening to the duo of Enberg and Olsen
crazy to see 3 HOF QB's in the same game, always loved watching OG football on my VHS collection back in the early 00's. Never got to see an actual full game though so this was cool to see
I remember every time my mom took me to the grocery store id ask for a quarter so I could get one of those little football helmets from the gumball machine and I think I had like 5 Denver broncos helmets with that old D logo!
I use to use some of my change like that wishing to get a broncos helmet and I could never..
Beautiful restoration. Thank you for all the 49ers games!
Love the Niners of the 80s, and the commercials in this vid bring back many great memories too!!
Very good quality. Great work! Funny that the Broncos pulled it out in OT. And just think, less than a year & a 1/2 later, 55-10 in the Super Bowl
Just the Randomness of sports. Ironically same thing happened many years later. 2014 Super Bowl. Seattle Humiliated Denver. And then 7 months later they played I think in Week 2 of the Regular Season IN Seattle. And that game went to OT. Much, much closer game. And pretty much the Same Rosters.
@@kevinfinnerty8414 - yeah it's crazy how quickly a game can get out of hand between 2 pretty similar teams. That early bad snap & safety in the Sea-Den Super Bowl really set the tone
Thank you for doing such a superb job! Looking forward to some postseason refurbishment games!
Roger Craig doesn't get the credit he deserves. He was the first running back to have 1000 yards receiving and 1000 yards rushing. Roger Craig was "The Truth".
When football was football! We needed those type of pads bc they were allowed to actually tackle and hit! Oh and did they hit!! 80’s and 90’s best football ever
Faster, stronger, smarter, better trained & coached now. Evolution.
Taped this game on VHS when it first aired in 88’ and I don’t think it was this great quality! Thank you for sharing such a high quality video from a great era when our uniforms were still awesome. 🐴🏈
It's the software enhancement that I perform on these old recordings that makes them shine :)

I didn't come to the states until 1990s and didn't have tv in my country. I don't care much for this game, but to someone who grew up watching this, I bet it meant the world to them.
2:31:16
Rifle shot throw by Elway to get into position for a FG.
Amazing video quality for an 80s game. Thanks!
Tremendous Cornhusker backfield for San Fran. Even Dubose chipped in 2 rushing TDs to compliment Craig & Rathman's production.
Amazing how Nebraska
Produced Sooooo Many RB's in the 80s-90s.
Mike Roizer, Tom Rathman, Roger Craig...
@@RaiderClarke312 Payola (whether by cash, cars, girls, or drugs) was all over 80's college football... Don't think Nebraska wasn't involved in this too!
Exactly one of the great backfields ever I'm a huge Nebraska fan hated the 49ers but as I look back that was an awesome backfield lol because I love rathman and Craig
Remarkable how it worked out for the Husker Bros. in Rathman, and Craig. Came from a school that never passed the rock, and then they both end up in San Francisco where Walsh had them catching a bunch of passes.
@@astrostar49
Walsh could see into the future a players potential unlike anyone else. He did this with Dwight Clark who had 32 total receptions at Clemson.
Roger Craig, one of the preeminent pass catchers as a RB, caught 16 passes his entire career at Nebraska. Tom Rathman had FIVE total receptions. In 1989 he had 73 with the 49ers.
I miss those old Denver Broncos uniforms especially the helmets love it. Wish the NFL would consider bringing them back for a few games 🐎
They do for 2 games every season. Where have you been?
@@RexJacobus-bb1vw Every season? Since when the 90s? I've been on earth and haven't seen that 🙄
Broncos do wear these helmets twice a year but they’re navy blue. It’s probably been 10-15 years since they wore these actual colors as throwbacks
The NFL had another one of their insane rules for around 10 years where the throwback helmet had to be the same exact color as their current helmet. They lifted that 2 years ago but Denver hasn’t gone back to these colors yet which blow away the current ones
@@craigstevens6693 Thanks for the info I wasn't aware of this.👍
The good ole days when you made a play and just went back to the huddle.
That’s actually what happens now the vast majority of the time.
One of the best statements of the last few years!!!!

I liked the 80s. This was a great rivalry. I was 11 years old during this game.
The barefoot kickers from back in the day lol
I miss QBs dropping back to pass. That has become a lost art.
Dave I always say this but …Amazing! …unbelievable job.
The colors absolutely pop
Always loved these Denver colors but this brings it to a whole new level.
Fantastic
Yes, this one was a real eye-popper Craig! :)
Jerry Rice called this the season from hell lol. which is pretty funny considering they went on to win the superbowl.
this was the beginning of a tough stretch for the 49ers where they went 2-4. they did not look like a team that was going to do much at all - and then they caught fire and stormed through the post-season.
i wish they had these old games on NFL replay.
Excellent work again mate. Thanks for another 49ers game. The wind was howling on this day. Roger Craig ran wild, but it wasn't enough. Always liked watching Elway though. And it worked out for the 49ers that year anyway.
Thanks for the effort in uploading these videos.
Interesting Enberg described the day as having perfect weather and no wind. I believe this is the game where there ended up being 40 mph wind gusts and it made passing almost impossible towards the end.
He should have been a weatherman
@@joemamma137 haha yeah I just think it speaks to the insane weather patterns at candlestick. I remember going there as a kid and it being nice and by the time the evening rolled around it felt like the arctic there, especially in the summer oddly enough. Fall was always so much nicer there.
When football was real. I miss watching football in the 80s & and 90s. It was a time to be alive. Those thanksgiving games with family over hit different back in the day.
Yes living in Pittsburgh it was outstanding to sit in a room of 15 people on Thanksgiving every year who all openly expressed their extreme hatred for the Cowboys. I’m a Niners fan but that still worked !
Thank you Dave 👍
Broncos helmet .... perfect. Looking forward to the new uniform in 24
Thankfully the days of dual use stadiums are long gone.
You did a great job improving the quality of this video.
Thank you!
Glad to see you back!
I miss real football. Just imagine all those who said the game was weak during this time. Watching this and the product now you couldn’t see much in common.
The athletes are so much better now, the offenses and defenses are more sophisticated, and the coaching has improved. But okay, cling to the past.
@@geoffoldread7684um you must be delusiinal says LT, Reggie White, Bruce Smith, Larry Allen, the list is endless
Man, the stars in this game!
They really used to leave the viewer oblivious to the score until commercial break
17:05 if not for the terrible career ending injury in 1989, Jeff Fuller was well on his way to becoming another all-time Niner great.
Fantastic era for big & skilled Strong Safeties in the NFL with David Fulcher in Cincinnati, Joey Browner in Minnesota, & soon after, Steve Atwater in Denver
I remember watching that Jeff Fuller injury and knew it was very serious. Damn shame. Even worse was that, I believe, he got injured on a play that was called back on a penalty.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673I remember watching it live, too. It was at Stanford Stadium because of the earthquake.
Saturday night and time travelling. Awesome.
I remember Bill Walsh said he hated the Broncos because his team couldn't beat them. That was during Bill's days in broadcasting. Yet, his 49ers beat them in Super Bowl XXIV.
A lot of it had to do with the Broncos defense under Joe Collier, who ran the most complicated scheme in football. The Broncos were the smallest defense in football in those years (averages like 225# per man), and really matched up poorly with the beasts from the NFC East: powerful, bigger teams, that bludgeoned Denver up front. But the 49ers, while certainly not finesse, were not in that same quality and had a tougher time matching up with the complicated Denver defense. But 1988 was a horrible year for the Broncos D, and Joe Collier was let go in and replaced by Wade Phillips. He ran a more aggressive defense, but it was very simple and basic. When OC Mike Holmgren and Joe Montana were scouting the Broncos before Super Bowl XXIV, they were astounded at how Denver’s defense didn’t change anything on film. They knew they could beat the Broncos with the post pattern, and did just that with 3 posts for touchdowns all down the middle. Denver wasn’t going to beat that 49ers team, based on on field talent, but they also didn’t match up well in strategy either.
Walsh was retired when they met in the Super Bowl. George Seifert was the head coach by then.
The best era of footbal IMO. No cell phones! Fantastic!
God I love those blue original helmets on the Broncos. Should be their standard uniform in the present.
i remember watching this game live. I couldn't believe the 49ers played so poorly. The 88 season was marred by inconsistencies. I also remember the latter part of the season and thinking that the 49ers still had a good chance of getting to the SB, which they did. Looking back the 49ers were on the verge of greatness. The 89 team may have been the best team ever assembled. What an era for 49er football.
Man Elway has a cannon for an arm!!
Great job Dave. Was always weird seeing Tony Dorsett in a Bronco uniform. Also, miss the baseball infield on the football field. Since baseball and football teams have their own stadiums now that no longer exist.
I'm gonna show my ignorance here, big time - I never knew that Dorsett played his final year with Denver. Amazing to me that he wasn't a Cowboy his whole career.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673I sometimes forget that Tony Dorsett was a Bronco for two years as well. Much like most non-49ers fans don't know that OJ Simpson played his last two years with the 49ers a decade earlier (OJ's last year was Bill Walsh's first year as 49ers HC).
Great Shit Dave...All of your videos have todays HD Quality!!
Great stuff. Keep up the great work!!!
Great job! Beautiful color! Not sure what you are going but it is really great.
Mike Wilson starting over John Taylor in 1988 seems wilddd
It was his first game back from a 3 game suspension for substance abuse. So…
Go Broncos!
Awesome. There’s another game between them at Candlestick with really bad wind and the 49ers alternated between Montana and Young for some reason, this game is a lot better.
More Broncos please, and thanks for your uploads
You're welcome :) Maybe you're thinking of another game though? This was the only time that the 49ers played Denver during the regular season (either at home or on the road) while both Young and Montana were on the team.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 maybe it’s this game, lol. It was late
Elway off to a shakey start in 1988 and worried they said ..LOL
Amazing quality!
When the NFL was fun to watch
The reason the Broncos had one time out left with 5 seconds left in regulation was that the timeout they might have been taking with 26 seconds remaining was not necessary because of the penalty for offsides on the 49ers. In those days the clock would remain stopped until the ball was snapped on the next play after a penalty even if the penalty was declined. It is unclear if the Broncos were taking the timeout to begin with, but the penalty call made if unnecessary as the clock remained stopped.
Who is posting all of these preserved nfl vids going back to 1968? they are great
They're all game enhancements I've done over the past 9 months - over 160 of them now.
This was the start of the famous mid-season slump in the ‘88 championship year when the Niners went through a tough 2-4 stretch where the division & even the playoffs were in real jeopardy
The only 2 wins in this span were aided greatly by the famous Roger Craig run against the Rams & the even more famous Steve Young run against the Vikings
An amazingly fun & interesting season
It's not famous, no one knows about that
Yeah I might’ve used the word famous a little too much there but Niner fans know how much of a hardship this entire season was on the 2 QBs & especially Bill Walsh.
