- Auto Rikenon 55mm F1.4. Low light photography at Seoul's lantern festival. The Rikenon was made by the then Riken Optical company which is now known as Ricoh Imaging. It is a very beautiful lens, the images are quite lovely as well. Only problem is it is radioactive, probably the most radioactive out there. But have no fear! Just don't lick it!

Doing some low light photography in Seoul, South Korea for the Seoul Lantern Festival which is held every year. This time around we are using the Auto Rikenon 55mm f1.4 - it is an old vintage lens with pretty massive bokeh balls.
Anyways, if you happen to be in Seoul during November, be sure to checkout the many things to do in Seoul like the Seoul lantern festival. The Auto Rikenon 55mm 1.4 is a lens made by Ricoh but it is also radioactive, unless you get a non radioactive version.
Pretty good, like it very much and I would appreciate it if you liked this video also.
I'm here to sell you an idea, the idea that photography is an art form which doesn't require the latest camera gear. I believe the most important aspect of photography is the person behind the camera learning to manipulate the light to take nice photos. It upsets me to see that the majority of photographic content revolves around getting people to buy the latest camera or lens, instead of actually making photographs.

Beautiful color rendition with the Auto Rikenon - Well Done
I'd like to shoot it in the day but I am always at work during the sunny times : /
Awesome shots and textures man :)
Thanks man! Glad you liked it
I now have both, the nonradioactive version and the lower SN radioactive version. I will compare them when the storms go away. I saw a 28mm one too online. I already have a few 28mm and 24mm lenses though.
very nice!
These are beautiful lenses. These are up there with the Mamiya Sekor C 645 lenses on a Sony A7Rii. Have you ever tried Mamiya Sekor C 645 lenses? They are great because with full frame 35mm you are looking at the center of the image circle. They are made for 120 film. However, I really was impressed with the Auto Rikenon.
Hi. How to identify if my version is radioactive or not?
I'm just now finding out about this lens, I love it. Love your video too!
It's so good!
B E A U T I F U L L. Even the music, which match the vídeo perfectly. I love the idea, Noe.
I'm really happy you like it man : )
I love that bokeh pattern. Those lanterns were amazing too. Nice one Noe 🤙
Thanks - so when are you guys coming : ) I know you go to Japan a lot - haha
Noealz - Rain Photographer You know when we will be in Seoul - end of March - start of April remember 🤓. We absolutely cant wait!!!
I liked it... joyful music and photos accompanying the movie
It makes me very happy that you enjoyed it :) Thank you
Just beautiful rendering of Bokeh thank you!
Many thanks!
It's the best video I've seen about this lens so far.
Outstanding bokeh, I love those lanterns!
Mine is the Cosinon which I believe it's the same Tomioka design with flat rear element. Both standard and MC versions, the multicoating helps a lot in sunlight to be honest, but for night scenes like this single coating should be good enough
Good choice! I've wanted to add a Cosinon for a while :3
Awesome shots! I love playing with the bokeh effect on my sigma 35mm art f/1.4 Can add just an amazing style!
I should use bokeh much more often than i do
This is great. Greetings from Sydney
greetings :)
Nice video, music also good ! 5/5
Thanks for sharing !!
Sure thing - I am trying to make my videos much more about the pictures rather than me - so I try not to make many talking head videos :p
@@Noealz Clean edit and lotsa fun with the focus "in and out" and the whole Bokeh thing. Refreshing stuff !
When is that BBC thing comin' up you talked about recently !
I picked up my "Auto Rikenon - 55mm f1.4" today. This is an impressive lens. It is heavy. I haven't had time to really test it much. It is very clean though. Everything moves smoothly. Plus they stuck 3 filters on it and they shipped it in an old lens case made in Japan. Did someone say it was radioactive? I tested mine with a Geiger counter and it is not radioactive. I am reading that this was made by Tomioka Optical. Could it be that earlier ones were radioactive, but the later ones not?
Some are and some arent, there's alot of version of it. The rear element is the radioactive one!
@jmoss99 I was happy to hear that your copy is not radioactive since I am currently searching for a non-radioactive version of this fantastic, masterpiece of a lens. Would you be able to reply to me your serial # (assuming its a six digit number, the first 3 digits should be sufficient to give me at least a starting point as to when the non-radioactive versions began production). I would greatly appreciate your assistance. Have a great day!
I would have preferred the radioactive version. That was what I thought I was getting. I have 7 radioactive lenses now and I can tell you that with vintage lenses it is NOT always ONLY the rear lens that is radioactive. Also, I would not put too much weight in the SN as they seemed to have wobbled moving from one to another. My lens is this one:
Auto Rikenon 55mm f1.4 SN 302757
@@jmoss99 Thank you so much for the quick response and advice. What other vintage lenses do you own? Which would you recommend?
Well since you asked, I currently own as of 10-27-2022, the following vintage lenses.
So here is my collection of 29 vintage lenses sorted by f-stops known as Lens Speed.

Please include the aperture settings for shots (unless they were all wide open?)
Ah, well the purpose on of my channel is to focus less on things like settings and more on the pictures themselves - but yes it was wide open!
Hi like your content :D Could you tell me what camera was used with the Auto Rikenon 55mm f1.4.
Glad you took interest in this awesome lens :)
And not only 2:34 but all over: Mesmerizing.
Haha thank you for that : )
굳 비데오
Thank you very much : )
I have just purchased an Auto Rikenon 55mm f1.4 and it is not radioactive. It has a serial number around 313,000. I presume the later produced lenses are the non-radioactive ones.
Most likely! Mine is the hot radioactive one :)
How many aperture blades does it have?
6
I took my Christmas cards with this lens this year
I love mine, still in perfect condition and looks like new without even a scratch.
@@Noealz - it's a wonderful lens! Thank you for the great video!
There seems to be Auto Rikenon 55mm f1.4 lens and Auto Rikenon 50mm f1.4 lenses. Why?
Have you compared them?
Why not? There are 40mm lenses, 50mm, 55mm ,58 - its just up to what people like
I have also been told by collectors that when looking for an original design one, meaning with 5 digit SNs, that 55mm are more likely to be radioactive and not 50mm version. I have been looking for a radioactive version as I already have a non-radioactive version. I know you don't concern yourself with lowly stuff like this, but I do as the lens processes the light. The light then is like paint for your art.
I believe Exaktar 55 mm 1.4 is the same lens..(made by Tomioka)
indeed yes : )
This is a pretty nice lens. How different do you think it is from the 1.2 version? Have you tried that one? it is like $700.
Oh I never tried it, but I dont like to worry about small things like that : )
Why?
@@jmoss99 Because it's 650 dollars cheaper.
I see.
I like using different lenses for what they offer.
I love my Olympus OM-System G.Zuiko Auto-S 55mm f1.2 1974.
Feel free watching your last videos :-)
watching all of them?
@@Noealz I'm trying to watching all videos
@@pravinsharma3816 be sure to like them too :3 helps~
@@Noealz I'm not leaving video without like thumbs up. No worries:-)
Some would suggest you keep it down to 1.8 or 2.0 to stop the freaking madness or broken lens look... that is if your genius fingers dare.
Or make a special dedicated vid about 1.8 on this lens.
; )
Anyone who says disneyland is the happiest place on earth has clearly never stood next to you☺☺
hahaha - I am quite cynical, don't talk much, and often don't wait for anyone :3
@@Noealz i am just kidding 😁
It's the same lens that Sears sold under their name. So look for the Sears model..It's cheaper.
AH i know that now : )
