Grandmaster Professor Yu Yong Nian (Yushiye) was a wonderful example of a great teacher. Gentle in many ways including how he wanted to teach without the seemingly obligatory beating up of students that some teachers seem to revel in, yet he was thorough and direct. He worked you hard and respected you working hard for him. We would stand for an hour before going on to do other training He was truly inspirational and it was an Honour and great pleasure to learn from him. R.I.P. Yushiye may your spirit fly.

I studied Taichi with Grandmaster John Chung Li. He taught us standing. First 5 min, then 10 and up to 20. He loved to walk past and point his finger at us and with a playful laugh say "no pain no gain" as we stood there shaking and sweating like a wet leaf on a tree! hahaha!
After doing 20 min for a while I jumped up to 1 hour. It was the most excruciating pain I have ever felt. I was shaking and breathing like no tomorrow. But a funny thing happened, while I was shaking so hard and breathing as hard as I could all of a sudden I would reach a point where I was somewhat like numb. Then I could go another 20 min before the pain got unbearable again. At the end when I stood up I felt like my legs had been plugged into a 220 volt circuit. I could feel this massive tingling feeling going up and down my legs.
Master Li always said Tai Chi makes your bones heavier. And standing is one of the best exercises for that. You really need to get a massive chi flowing through the meridian channels in order to restructure the bone material to become more dense. Tai Chi is not about the muscles, it's the bones! That is where the real power comes from. Master Li once said to me "here hold my arm". What? I thought to myself, but he held out his arm for me to hold, when he let the full weight drop into my hand - OMG my jaw practically dropped to the floor. His arm was So SO heavy. I had done a lot of body work and Kung Fu and Tai Chi, I knew what an average arm should feel like. This was 10x's heavier than anything I expected. He was a little old Chinese man, didn't have big muscles. He often said "Taichi makes your bones heavier" and he proved it that day. I'll never forget it. And no he was not pushing down, a few people have said that to me when I've told this story. It was amazing experience to study with him. And I have even more stories but for another time!

A truly wonderful and inspirational video. I was first taught Zhan Zhuang around 1985 by a student of Master Lam Kam Chuen as part of preparation for Tai Chi. Later on, I watched the series on TV Channel Four in the UK entitled "Stand Still, Be Fit" - which was a landmark documentary series showing the public how to practise this powerful exercise. I still find it very inspiring to this day, both the TV series videos set of 10 videos to be found on RUclips and the book "The Way of Energy". I also have the original booklet to go with the TV series. I use them regularly to help me in my practise of Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Zhan Zhuang.
The contribution Professor Yu Yong Nian to the world of Chinese internal martial arts, health, well-being and mindfulness is truly legendary. Thank you for sharing this video.

What benefits, did you gain from it

@@CJ-jp3zw good question. I suppose the honest answer is that I didn't get as much benefit as I could have. It needs daily practice to really achieve significant life-long benefits. However, over the years I haven't been very consistent with it, hence the benefits have been lower.
I would say that it helped me begin a process of transformation, a journey I am still on today at the age of nearly 63. I am practising it now more than I did when I was 25, perhaps because it has become more important now.
I think it has overall given me a strong and stable posture and my legs are quite strong. It has also calmed me down and helped me to combat and finally let go of some old bad habits and tendencies.
If you haven't tried it, I can recommend that you start and continue and don't drop the diligence and consistency like I did.

@@CJ-jp3zw - I'll just add one other thing; I do EMBRACE THE TREE twice a day, for about 15 minutes each time. I used to do it for about 25 minutes apiece, but didn't have the time. Among other things, in this posture you hold both arms out in front of you the entire time, in almost a semicircle. I have them raised to shoulder height. When you do that daily, your shoulders get bigger & stronger... so there's that too, besides improving your flow of internal energy & root.

I prefer INSIDE ZHAN ZHUANG, by Mark Cohen to Master Lam's book.. Cohen's book is less rigid, more open to different bodies and changing circumstance as those bodies grow more supple. Plus it has an index and is more complete, less flowery and "mystical" and less didactic. For example, on page 85 (Holding Your Belly- The Third Position) Master Lam says "sink about 5 cm".
Well, no. The main thrust of the Cohen book is finding how flexible your body is, to begin with. Cohen says (page 37- under "The Height of the Stand"). To quote him, in part: "...I refer here to ''tall standing' where one only unlocks their knees rather than actually flexing or bending them. This method is referenced in Sitting On A High Stool exercise mentioned previously. Although this 2nd method creates less chi pressure, its great benefit is that it puts a lot less stress on the spine, joints, and internal organs. Also there's another significant factor to this. I've found as the body does begin to strengthen and heal, one's center of gravity will naturally want to become lower of itself..."
I prefer that over "sink 5 cm".

while MASTER YU is worthy of true transmission from founder and transferring universe's energy from martial arts to healing...MARK COHEN is very worthy and approachable for westerner's who lack mandarin and understanding of chinese idioms , culture and metaphysics...both need reading...but I agree with OP that though I practice the postures of MASTER YU right out of his book I credit MARK COHEN with vastly increasing the depth of my understanding and I was extremely excited when I discovered mark cohen AND ADDED HIS WISDOM to my practice-ZHAN ZUANG is beyond words the power must be experienced to be believed-

I'm sorry but you are deluded in your opinion here. Zhan Zhuang / Standing Post is indeed Nei Kung but as always it depends not only how you are taught it but how you train it as well. I personally trained with Grandmaster Prof Yu Yong Nian and I can assure you his skill was immense and yet he was a gentle giant. He simply didn't want to hurt you, that doesn't mean he didn't hurt people and with little effort he practically pushed me through a wall. As for Wang Xiang Zhai He fought using Xing YI and developed Yiquan from Xing Yi but I think purely on a political basis due to the outlawing and demonisation of Traditional Martial Arts in China.
