Spike from Nova Scotian breakwater

This spike was salvaged from a very old breakwater on a Nova Scotian property that's been in the family for 40 years. As the sun and water have broken it down over the years, I wanted to preserve a part of it before it disappears forever. I decided to create a type of shadow box so I could hang it in my shop.

What is the spike used for?

It held some of the beams that created a breakwater on a Nova Scotian shoreline. The breakwater is falling apart now, but was built around 75 years ago. The pictures in the frame at the end show what’s left today.
