On the Meribald note: Being a clergyman (in-training) myself, I’ve always disliked the characterization of ASoIaF as entirely edgy atheist fiction. George is an atheist, sure, but religion in the books is portrayed with more nuance than people give it credit for. It’s critical of Catholic theology and culture, true, but that criticism isn’t wholesale. The entire spectrum of the clergy is presented: the pious and goodhearted (Chayle, Mordane, the Elder Brother, the begging brothers, my boy Meribald), the…very mixed (High Sparrow, Thoros, Baelor, Aeron, Mel), and the outright terrible (Septon Utt, the Faceless Men). Some characters use faith as a method of control or cruelty, while others, like Davos, are strengthened by their faith and have a strong moral compass in accordance with it. The show totally dropped that complexity, and was much worse off for it.
Even I, an atheist, was bothered by the show's version of the followers of the faith of the seven. Why make Davos a skeptic when he's supposed to be the representation of the "common" man, and most people in westeros were religious? Also that sad mixture of Elder Brother/Septon Meribald saying he doesn't really believe in the gods, he only cares about people being nice to each other. Why? What was the point of that? With all due respect to you father (future father?), I really despise the catholic church and most evangelical institutions, but that DOESN'T mean that every good Christian is at least partially atheist 😂
When I first watched one of these I thought “fun concept, probably listen for a few minutes, but I’m not doing 3 and a half hours of ASOIAF food descriptions.” 15 hours of ASOIAF food descriptions later: “ahhh when’s the next one dropping?!”

'Lemon Gate' is one of a score of parallels Martin has put into Dany's story as an homage to Cinderella, not a clue about Dorne. In Cinderella, the Brother's Grim version, there is a Hazel Tree (with giant yellow flowers) marking the grave of Cinderella's mother that is the place where she prays, and it the Hazel Tree (rather than fairy god mother) that grants her the wishes that change her life! This is a much better explanation for the Lemon Tree when you research it than forcing a Dorne upbringing on her that has no other evidence than a Lemon Tree, while there are dozens of carefully laid parallels by George Martin to Cinderella, just as Sansa's storyline is filled with references to Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Arya's storyline is filled with references to Odysseus, and both Stark sisters have many references to Ariel and the Little Mermaid throughout their storylines. Ice, Fire & Fairy Tales: Does the storyline of Daenerys in ASOIAF parallel the fairytale of Cinderella (‘little ash girl’)? Yes! Dany’s plot is a dark inversion of Cinderella’s (Cindy’s), in that Dany is already a princess and very much does not want to be sent off to marry the Dothraki prince (Khal Drogo)--or later to be pressured into marrying the gross Meereenese heir to Loraq (Hizdahr zo Loraq)--and her situation gets much worse with each unwanted marriage. But in many other respects, Dany’s journey is very similar to Cindy’s: our heroine begins as a young teenage girl (Cindy is 12, Dany is 13), who has lost her mother and father, and is currently living on a wealthy estate but nonetheless impoverished (the family’s wealth having been expended and its jewelry sold), where she is treated awfully by her sibling(s). Our heroine keeps going to / thinking about a large tree with yellow flowers / fruits that represents her lost mother / happier childhood (Cindy’s hazel tree and Dany’s lemon tree). Our heroine sustains her spirit through the hardest of times by dreams that ultimately come true, being helped along the way by some variety of a fairy godmother (Qaithe of the Shadow in Dany’s case sending her dreams with instructions on how to hatch the dragon eggs). Our heroine goes through the story freeing mice from traps and feeding corn to animals, in the case of Disney’s Cindy; and freeing slaves from bondage while struggling to secure food for her people, in the case of Dany. And when we reach the climax of the story-in Cindy’s case in the Brothers Grimm, two white pigeons perch dramatically on the shoulders of our heroine, named the ash-covered girl; and in Dany’s case, a hatchling black dragon perches dramatically on the shoulders of our heroine who is literally covered in ash from Drogo’s pyre. To fairly considered all the many parallels, we need to compare Dany’s journey to the three most famous versions of the story: --the 1697 French version written by Charles Perrault, Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre (‘Little Cinders, or the Glass Slipper’); --the darker 1812 German version written by the Brothers Grimm, Ashenputtel (‘Ash-Dirty Girl’); --the 1950 Disney animated classic (based on Perrault’s version of the story, plus songs and added animals with storylines). The most important differences among the versions are: The Fairy Godmother appears in the Perrault and Disney versions but in the Brothers Grimm version there is instead a magical wish-granting hazel tree with large yellow flower bunches, planted by Cindy to mark the grave of her mother. The 1950 Disney film features a major theme of Cinderella freeing mice from traps and cats and feeding animals throughout the story; it also includes a talking mouse Jaq who is Cinderella’s closest friend, as well as a loyal dog Bruno whom the step-mother has locked up down in the cellar, and the step-mother’s devilish cat, Lucifer, who is always trying to catch and eat Cindy’s beloved mice. Let’s proceed through the story and note some of the parallels in the remainder of this answer. Heroine’s Introduction ‘For the family fortunes were squandered…while Cinderella was abused and humiliated…But through it all Cinderella remained humble and kind, believing that someday her dreams would come true.’ -Prologue to Disney Cinderella ‘Her mother had died birthing her, and for that Viserys had never forgiven her… Years past they had been forced to sell their last few treasures, and now even the coin they had gotten for Mother’s crown was gone. -Dany 1, AGOT When we first meet Dany in Pentos, she is wearing “a rough cotton tunic” because they could no longer afford comfortable clothes, and “she could never remember wearing anything so soft” as the dress that Viserys presents to her to impress the Khal that evening. Time for a Bath Her blue bird friends give Cindy a sponge bath behind a screen, in her opening scene. ‘They filled her bath with hot water brought up from the kitchen.’ -Dany 1, AGOT, her opening scene. Rainbows For Our Heroine Have faith in your dreams, and someday your rainbow will come sliding through. No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dream that you wish will come true.’ -Lyrics, 1st song in Disney Cinderella ‘You ought to see [the Dothraki sea] when it blooms, all dark red flowers from horizon to horizon like a sea of blood. Come the dry season, the world turns the color of old bronze. And this is only hranna, child. There are a hundred kinds of grass out there, grasses yellow as lemons and as dark as indigo, blue grasses and orange grasses and grasses like rainbows. Down in the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai, they say there are oceans of ghost grass…It murders all other grass and glows in the dark with the spirits of the damned.’ -Jorah Mormont, Dany 3, AGOT ‘Across the pit the graces sat in glowing robes of many colors, clustered around the austere figure of Galazza Galare, who alone among them wore the green.’ Note that green eyes and green clothing is code for evil in classic Disney movies. In Cinderella the evil stepmother and her cat Lucifer have green eyes, and the austere stepmother prefers green jewelry. Likewise, in Sleeping Beauty Maleficent has green eyes and turns into a green dragon. The ‘glowing robes of many colors’ is also a reference to Saruman, the deceitful, in The Two Towers who has exchanged his white robes for robes of many colors. These are but a few of the many clues that austere Green Grace is in fact the Harpy of Meereen, who has been responsible for the slaughter of freed slaves and Dany’s soldiers, forcing her to stay locked up for safety in a pyramid, just as the evil step-mother forced Cindy to stay locked up in their chaeteau, as well as at the top of the highest tower when guests came. But Dreams Can Come True ‘A dream is a wish your heart makes when you are fast asleep.’ -Lyrics, 1st song in Disney Cinderella ‘Yet when she slept that night, she dreamt the dragon dream again…There was only her and the dragon. Its scales were black as night, wet and slick with blood…She felt strong and new and fierce. The next day, strangely, she did not seem to hurt quite so much.’ -Dany 3, AGOT Climax of the Story ‘And as they passed the hazel bush, the two white pigeons cried, "There they go, there they go! No blood on her shoe; The shoe's not too small, The right bride is she after all." And when they had thus cried, they came flying after and perched on Cinderella's shoulders, one on the right, the other on the left, and so remained.’ -Brothers Grimm,1819 edition ‘And when the fire died at last and the ground was cool enough to walk upon, Ser Jorah Mormount found her amidst the ashes, surrounded by blacked logs and bits of glowing ember, and the burnt bones of man and woman and stallion. She was naked, covered with soot, her clothes turned to ash, her beautiful hair all crisped away…yet she was unhurt. The cream-and-gold dragon was sucking at her left breast, the green-and-bronze at the right. Her arms cradled them close. The black-and-scarlet beast was draped across her shoulders, its long sinuous neck curled under her chin.’ -Dany X, AGOT More parallels from A Dance with Dragons Shoes ‘Irri slid the slippers onto Dany’s feet. They were gilded leather, decorated with green freshwater pearls. Does the butcher king believe a pair of pretty slippers will win my hand? “King Cleon is most generous. You may thank him for his lovely gift.” Lovely, but made for a child. Dany had small feet, yet the pointed slippers mashed her toes together.’ -Dany, ADWD ‘Let me go!’ Dany twisted from [Ser Barristan’s] grasp. The world seemed to slow as she cleared the parapet. When she landed in the pit, she lost a sandal.’ -Dany IX, ADWD Flight from the Ball ‘Across the pit the graces sat in glowing robes of many colors, clustered around the austere figure of Galazza Galare, who alone among them wore the green.’ -Dany IX, ADWD The Green Grace’s name includes “gala,’ another name for a ball. For the Meereenese, the slaughter in the fighting pits is like a costumed ball, as all the Meereenese nobility wear brightly colored toqars and many of the guards around the stadium are wearing bronze animal masks. As the twelfth scheduled performance in Draznak’s Pit approaches and Drogon appears to eat the boar that has just killed a female gladiator, Dany rips off her stylish toqar, jumps down into the pit, losing one of her two sandles, and flies off on dragon-back just before the clock figuratively strikes midnight. Danaerys Stormborn is indeed this story’s Cinderella heroine, and that's why it's crucial that she have a tree with giant yellow fruit or flowers in her backstory. Jeffrey Claburn
Lemons also connect Dany to Sansa who loves lemon cakes. They make lemon cakes in Winterfell from lemons from the greenhouses, which is also the theory for how there is a lemon tree in Dorne for Dany to remember. I don’t think Martin is a botanist, in any case, but he does love retelling classic fairytales. So Sansa probably got her love of lemon cakes as a parallel to Dany who who got her lemon tree (bc Martin loves food) from Cinderella’s hazel tree (which does produce hazelnuts) but most people don’t know what a hazel tree is exactly.
Ikr?! Same! Glidus is a go-to staple for lifting spirits- as is Alt Shwift-both great on their own but then together -well, u just can’t argue with the comedic genius of this duo 😂
Widows blood being used to kill Tywin just pretty much confirms Oberon did it. I mean, honestly, he’s exactly the sort of person who’d enjoy that poetic justice. Tywin killed his sister by ordering the mountain to do it, he’s got widows blood on his hands, and it’s fitting his insides would turn toxic and to shit like he is morally on the inside. A person with widows blood on their hands, dying by widows blood, with Oberon being proved innocent afterwards due to winning the fight.
Old comment that no one will read, but part of the deal that Tyrion makes with Dorne when he sends them Marcella is that they will get justice for the deaths of Elia, Rhaenys, and Aegon. That is probably why Oberyn said he came to kill the Mountain. I was an Oberyn poisoned Tywin truther too until the most recent time I read the books. Now I don't think there's enough evidence to make it anything other than a head canon.
Really happy with you pointing out how messed up Cersei's punishment is and how the High Sparrow, while having some good qualities, is also just as much a savage, self-serving politician as the nobles are. Because yeah, she isn't punished for regicide, the possible murder of her childhood friend, destroying the economy of the Realm or the fact her children are born of incest (in fact, it's implied the High Sparrow intentionally lets that one slide, because he'd rather have Tommen on the throne than non-believer Stannis). She's punished for having sex outside of marriage, something plenty of male characters in this series do and even several female characters we actually like. Also, like others say, the High Sparrow wanted an easy scapegoat. It didn't really matter to him which queen he humiliated, either Cersei or Margaery, because it would cement the power of the Faith Militant and seeing how Cersei is far more hated by the smallfolk than Margaery, she was the more convenient target.
No one's gonna read that, but whatever. When Leaf calls Coldhands "very old" she might as well refer to the "concept" of Coldhands as a servant to the Three Eyed Crow, rather than speaking of this particular Coldhands. In the same book we have Ramsay saying that Reek was with him since childhood, clearly referring to the idea of there being a "Reek", rather than Theon specifically.
Since I just woke up, I’m now listening to the stream (and you guys are hilarious as always!). Just wanted to add that you guys sounded as if you found it odd that they eat boar… boar is amazing! My grandparents own some forests and the local hunter brings us deer and boar every year. It really tastes fantastic. Cersei should be glad Robert wasn’t killed by a bear!
That was my plan too! Now I'm almost done with AFFC and am thinking I'll have time to fit in a full series reread before Winds is even done. And I'm a shamefully slow reader.
Glidus and I are on such perfect wavelengths. 1:07:15 I just saw a video on my recommend telling that story about the New Zealand French Scrabble guy right before I started to finish watching this.
2:18:50 now imagine if Daenerys' story suddenly followed Princess Kawashima Yoshiko's later life more faithfully, becoming a spy and infiltrating Westeros disguised as a man, seducing women along the way. Honestly, her life has so many weird overlaps, especially early on, that I'm unsure if she wasn't actually the inspiration for Dany: -entire family killed when another emperor took over -married to a Mongol warlord, fled from the camp on a white horse -completely embraces her new japanese identity
1:30:11 the fact that these guys don't know about eating mummies as a delicacy by Europeans in the 17th and 18th century but speculated that accurately is hilarious
If you did video on Artemis Fowl I would definitely watch it. It´s one of my most beloved series, but I haven´t touched it in years and I´ve never read it in English, so it would be interesting to remember it all and to learn all the lore, terminology and names. And of course, it´s always a blast to listen to your opinions and jokes!
12:38 there were a couple of guys who did an advent calendar competition a few years ago, and whoever got the worst thing that day had to eat some cheese from the cheese calendar. They filmed it all in one day, and one of them became lactose-intolerant because of it.
12:48 Speaking if cheese wheels, RIP to that guy who got crushed last month when a shelf full of 80-pound cheese wheels fell on him. 17:09 Stephen King wrote a story, "The Survivor Type" where a guy has to do that to himself.

--the 1950 Disney animated classic (based on Perrault’s version of the story, plus songs and added animals with storylines).
The most important differences among the versions are:
The Fairy Godmother appears in the Perrault and Disney versions but in the Brothers Grimm version there is instead a magical wish-granting hazel tree with large yellow flower bunches, planted by Cindy to mark the grave of her mother.
Heroine’s Introduction
‘For the family fortunes were squandered…while Cinderella was abused and humiliated…But through it all Cinderella remained humble and kind, believing that someday her dreams would come true.’ -Prologue to Disney Cinderella
‘Her mother had died birthing her, and for that Viserys had never forgiven her… Years past they had been forced to sell their last few treasures, and now even the coin they had gotten for Mother’s crown was gone. -Dany 1, AGOT
When we first meet Dany in Pentos, she is wearing “a rough cotton tunic” because they could no longer afford comfortable clothes, and “she could never remember wearing anything so soft” as the dress that Viserys presents to her to impress the Khal that evening.
Time for a Bath
Her blue bird friends give Cindy a sponge bath behind a screen, in her opening scene.
‘They filled her bath with hot water brought up from the kitchen.’ -Dany 1, AGOT, her opening scene.
Rainbows For Our Heroine
Have faith in your dreams, and someday your rainbow will come sliding through. No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dream that you wish will come true.’ -Lyrics, 1st song in Disney Cinderella
‘You ought to see [the Dothraki sea] when it blooms, all dark red flowers from horizon to horizon like a sea of blood. Come the dry season, the world turns the color of old bronze. And this is only hranna, child. There are a hundred kinds of grass out there, grasses yellow as lemons and as dark as indigo, blue grasses and orange grasses and grasses like rainbows. Down in the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai, they say there are oceans of ghost grass…It murders all other grass and glows in the dark with the spirits of the damned.’ -Jorah Mormont, Dany 3, AGOT
‘Across the pit the graces sat in glowing robes of many colors, clustered around the austere figure of Galazza Galare, who alone among them wore the green.’
Note that green eyes and green clothing is code for evil in classic Disney movies.
But Dreams Can Come True
‘A dream is a wish your heart makes when you are fast asleep.’ -Lyrics, 1st song in Disney Cinderella
‘Yet when she slept that night, she dreamt the dragon dream again…There was only her and the dragon. Its scales were black as night, wet and slick with blood…She felt strong and new and fierce. The next day, strangely, she did not seem to hurt quite so much.’ -Dany 3, AGOT
Climax of the Story
‘And as they passed the hazel bush, the two white pigeons cried,
"There they go, there they go!
No blood on her shoe;
The shoe's not too small,
The right bride is she after all."
And when they had thus cried, they came flying after and perched on Cinderella's shoulders, one on the right, the other on the left, and so remained.’ -Brothers Grimm,1819 edition
‘And when the fire died at last and the ground was cool enough to walk upon, Ser Jorah Mormount found her amidst the ashes, surrounded by blacked logs and bits of glowing ember, and the burnt bones of man and woman and stallion. She was naked, covered with soot, her clothes turned to ash, her beautiful hair all crisped away…yet she was unhurt.
The cream-and-gold dragon was sucking at her left breast, the green-and-bronze at the right. Her arms cradled them close. The black-and-scarlet beast was draped across her shoulders, its long sinuous neck curled under her chin.’ -Dany X, AGOT
More parallels from A Dance with Dragons
Shoes
‘Irri slid the slippers onto Dany’s feet. They were gilded leather, decorated with green freshwater pearls. Does the butcher king believe a pair of pretty slippers will win my hand? “King Cleon is most generous. You may thank him for his lovely gift.” Lovely, but made for a child. Dany had small feet, yet the pointed slippers mashed her toes together.’ -Dany, ADWD
‘Let me go!’ Dany twisted from [Ser Barristan’s] grasp. The world seemed to slow as she cleared the parapet. When she landed in the pit, she lost a sandal.’ -Dany IX, ADWD
Flight from the Ball
‘Across the pit the graces sat in glowing robes of many colors, clustered around the austere figure of Galazza Galare, who alone among them wore the green.’ -Dany IX, ADWD
The Green Grace’s name includes “gala,’ another name for a ball.

Hooooly shi-
Or he just goofed
I didn't even know that RUclips let you make comments this long!
Since Hippocras is named after Hippocrates, did ASOIF’s universe also have Ancient Greece randomly hanging about
I like to imagine Hippocrates is a similarly important but entirely different historical figure in Westeros

Was just about to rewatch some old Glidus content when I stumbled on this stream. very happy
Ikr?! Same! Glidus is a go-to staple for lifting spirits- as is Alt Shwift-both great on their own but then together -well, u just can’t argue with the comedic genius of this duo 😂
it's funny how there are actual zombies in the series, but the only instance of someone being eaten alive is by a lucid cannibal man with filed teeth.
Gotta love all of the updates to the AltshwiftX bastard lore
I was just hoping for a new schwift and glimbus video!! y’all together making anything are my favorite videos
Ngl both of these fellas are actually pretty cool
I listen to this one frequently because the uncontrollable laughing over "Belandra" is hysterical and it makes me laugh every time.
i look forward to these streams so much, thank you for doing them!! ☺️💗
Fun fact 1:00:00. The SPAM Monty Python sketch is the reason the word spam is used for spam nowadays
I’m absolutely here for the very therapeutic ramblings of two of my favorite GoT theorists. Cheers
HOW THE FUCK DID I MISS THIS 😭😭😭😭😭
Because it was too friggin' early!
Because it started at 1:54 am here in eastern Canada eastern time while I was sleeping lol
the wun-wun joke sent me to the atmosphere shwift is just too quick with it
This is my favourite hangover podcast
I SHALL HAVE MANY WAR UPDATES NEXT TIME
1:20:16 it's funny that neither of y'all know what stuffed grape leaves are, it's a Mediterranean/Middle Eastern dish called dolma.
The funniest is Mariya Darry: "Hanged, Amy, not hung. Your father wasn t a tapestry." You can feel how disapointed she is that Merrett wasn t one...
Also merrett frey was definetly not "hung"
Maybe
@@herbertschulz4313 He was hangover. ^^

Glidus is back :) makes me so happpy
It didn't really matter to him which queen he humiliated, either Cersei or Margaery, because it would cement the power of the Faith Militant and seeing how Cersei is far more hated by the smallfolk than Margaery, she was the more convenient target.
glidus and schwifty talking about their delayed projects is a level of inception i never wanted
2:11:33 I donated $1.99 twice, because the Bran 9/11 theory affected the 9 kingdoms and is 99% true

No one's gonna read that, but whatever. When Leaf calls Coldhands "very old" she might as well refer to the "concept" of Coldhands as a servant to the Three Eyed Crow, rather than speaking of this particular Coldhands. In the same book we have Ramsay saying that Reek was with him since childhood, clearly referring to the idea of there being a "Reek", rather than Theon specifically.
thanks glindus and art shaft axe for the brilliant food reviews as always
These 2 are growing progressively crazier as the years pass, and we are going crazy too!
You sound like a noble now hahaha
the bastard lore is my favorite thing to think about
Im so happy that this exists

That was my plan too! Now I'm almost done with AFFC and am thinking I'll have time to fit in a full series reread before Winds is even done. And I'm a shamefully slow reader.
Glidus and I are on such perfect wavelengths. 1:07:15 I just saw a video on my recommend telling that story about the New Zealand French Scrabble guy right before I started to finish watching this.
Youse say so many things that just tickle my brain. Really poring over "They disassembled Vargo Hoat like a Lego man" rn
i agree with stannis being the funniest solely for the line "I AM NOT WITHOUT MERCY" thundered he who was notoriously without mercy
Awesome as always... look forward to the conclusion.
Im just so happy right now, this makes my whole week. Is the grease running down the chin of my life.

2:18:50 now imagine if Daenerys' story suddenly followed Princess Kawashima Yoshiko's later life more faithfully, becoming a spy and infiltrating Westeros disguised as a man, seducing women along the way.
Honestly, her life has so many weird overlaps, especially early on, that I'm unsure if she wasn't actually the inspiration for Dany:
-entire family killed when another emperor took over
-married to a Mongol warlord, fled from the camp on a white horse
-completely embraces her new japanese identity
My Wednesday has been exponentially improved, thanks for the stream lads!
WHY DID YOU START THIS WHEN I WAS SLEEPING?!?!?!? Also thousandth like, I love you guys!
"9-11, the North never forgets" is something I never thought I would have heard in my entire life.
12:38 there were a couple of guys who did an advent calendar competition a few years ago, and whoever got the worst thing that day had to eat some cheese from the cheese calendar. They filmed it all in one day, and one of them became lactose-intolerant because of it.
