how do you avoid chattering and trim lines?

To avoid chattering, I have found it best to use basic steel loop tools, such as the Kemper large loop tool (I think it's about $6). I also like using the Xiem Titanium Fused loop tools, which are a bit more ($15-20). These tools have "softer" metal which works for me.
I have tried the really stiff tools from a variety of companies, sometimes this is just extra thick steel or made from tungsten carbide, and found that the very stiff tools resulted in lots of chattering.
In terms of trimming lines or marks, it's also a good idea to follow up trimming with a soft rib or damp sponge, to sort of "close the pores" on the clay.
