There is still a lot to learn from this tennis player of incomparable class. in my room with my racket following his movements in this video, forehand and backhand, what better teacher could I have!?
Thanks. I was tempted to add a music overlay, but then decided to leave it raw. I feel it is much better and others could experience just like me, sitting there in person.
There was absolutely nothing special about him blocking that back. I love Federer and there’s a lot of stuff he’s doing incredibly well but you’ve got to quit putting every little tiny thing he does on a pedestal
7:00 - worth noting the full follow-thru arc/shape on the backhand - often a less flamboyant thing happens but this bigger version would obviously allow for smoother deceleration if needed
I left all of the footage in its raw format and speed, but as many of you may already know RUclips does allow you to play with it. In the bottom right corner on the Gear icon, you can select different speeds. 0.25X is a decent (but choppy) slow motion to see more details where you want to focus. Somewhere between 1.25X and 1.5X is what he looks like during a competitive match. 2X is just plain fun. I apologize for not flipping my camera to 60Hz mode, nor 4K but it still turned out pretty great at 1080p at 30 HZ.
No lie, the young girl volunteer controlling access to these stands had no clue about tennis. People were coming up asking to get in and she said "It is full up there, everybody wants to see this guy named Roger Fredrick". She wasn't joking.
He is so casual, and standing RIGHT ON the baseline which makes it much harder. I love the moment at 13:09 where he was relaxed and instincts just kicked in and had no choice but to run and hit the crazy high backhand winner.
Look at his wrist action on the topspins. He starts forward action on backhand with the wrist bent back in a j-shape and ends it with the wrist laid back having flipped over the arm. Does exactly the same thing in reverse on the forehand. I tried it and it is as easy as it looks.
FA-A has a nice pace in his groundstrokes but quite a lot of mistakes. Plenty of spin in that FH but the double backhand is very flat and he is often too close to the ball. But damn, living the dream at 17.
He is definitively one to watch moving forward. I enjoyed watching this interview (thankfully with subtitles on his answers) about his practice with Federer in Dubai. It was especially interesting hearing him hint that he had a hard time keeping up with the old man technically, but also physically. I can't imagine how hard Fed works out to stay in that shape. ruclips.net/video/R9VU1gwaOFA/видео.html
Fed's more efficient. Reads the game better, thus can take the ball earlier. Moves less than others (except when he struggles against exceptionally good baseliners). And has better offensive weapons than most. He obviously works hard, but I doubt many others can replicate his innate ability in this regard and I'm almost certain that many who struggle against him actually work harder.
This is a perfect example of hitting through the ball. He’s not “brushing up the back of the ball”, that’s the worst advice ever. Instead, he’s using the low to high swing path and controlling the racquet face to hit THROUGH the shot.
Well when you have an eastern grip your swing is naturally going to be much more horizontal than verticle, if you have a semi western or a full western brushing up behind the ball isn't entirely wrong.
Ertugrul Körpinar true but hitting through the ball is key to consistency, pace, depth, having the ball not sail long, etc. Andre Agassi once said, the most important part of the tennis swing are the 6 inches before the ball and the 6 inches after the ball
You can totally see the difference btw a "starter" pro player and a veteran pro player in this video. Compared to his partner, Roger's racket head acceleration/deceleration is way smoother and more efficient. His swings have strength in it but only when needed-instant before contact to instant after contact. The rest 80% of the time, his swings are very relaxed and fluent, impressive. And he can keep playing quality shots same level as his partner's while in a much more relaxed manner !
Federer can take the pace off any shot. He can do it relatively well on the forehand side. The fact he can do it on the backhand is IMO even better. Not sure if that makes any sense.
different personalities. Ever wonder why nadal/roger don't hit other than the obvious competitive rivalry (i.e. in earlier days)? Rafa would be going nuts with Fed's "relaxness" and Fed would feel extra pressured. best way is if each person just maximizes their quirkiness and Auger Aliassime is a very serious kid (doesn't seem like he could ever really relax which is fine).
Fedtards believe that Roger never practices hard, that he just watches movies while others train hard. Fedtards are delusional creatures, completely insane.
TCIASC.. U know what ur an idiotic moron, we are just commenting on how Federer hits, nobody said he is not practicing very hard! When u try to argue u should know what is the proposition u stupid ass nigga!!
Fed is trying to ride that middle line between his typical relaxed/lazy practice sessions, and not getting clowned on by Felix - who is desperate to show how hard he can smack the ball at the GOAT
ok, I just saw that those *are* actually Nikes. Do not look like Nikes *at all* - they were sure to rip those away from him fast. Lol. and never make shoes with such a tiny swoosh logo ever again.
I think I figured out the steps of his motion…it’s tough to explain in writing, but if anybody wants, I can Skype you and show you. I don’t want anything in return.
Roger Federer. You should look him up, the 37 year old kid probably has enough potential to win 20 grand slams and have a net worth of $450,000,000+ I think.
Hey man, I have a question. What was the recording settings? I also have an iphone X and would like to film like you did, it is great. If you can, please also tell me the height above the ground you filmed this (I will attach my iphone X to the fence with a tripod). Thanks!
It was just the default recording setting. 1080p @ 30 fps. I could have done up to 4k at 60 fps, but had limited space available on the phone. I was in the front row of seats about 8 feet above the court. The challenge was getting to the right court way ahead of time to avoid the 1000s of people who couldn't even get into the stands. Thanks.
There's something calming about watching this practice session. So smooth
and this is one of the scratchiest Federer practices you willl ever see
Phenomenal footage here. Roger's forehand is the shot that all forehands will forever be measured against.
The opponent had a good forehand too
@@Flowful99 Absolutely. I’m pretty sure he’s practicing with Felix Auger Aliassime. Not too shabby, as practice partners go.
That eastern grip is god awful
There is still a lot to learn from this tennis player of incomparable class. in my room with my racket following his movements in this video, forehand and backhand, what better teacher could I have!?
The landscape behind the court is very beautiful
look at the monte carlo tournament lol
Maybe it's the first time that I see roger wearing a cap over ten years
Maybe he was hungover. Or maybe not.
He is now retired you're so lucky you saw him at that time😭
hes work caps in warm ups and off court a lot
Men you did an awesome job in holding the phone steady for over 15 minutes. Well done!
This guy held it better than a tripod.
Man that kid Auger-Aliassime hits hard and deep.
He's now shining on tour
he just beat Federer
Is it just me but this sounds really relaxing for the mind. I can sit here for hours and fall asleep to it lol.
Thanks. I was tempted to add a music overlay, but then decided to leave it raw. I feel it is much better and others could experience just like me, sitting there in person.
Mesmerising to watch this once in a lifetime champion
8:37 awesome defence backhand
13:09
I have to observe that motion-study.
There was absolutely nothing special about him blocking that back. I love Federer and there’s a lot of stuff he’s doing incredibly well but you’ve got to quit putting every little tiny thing he does on a pedestal
tiny things R essence of what makes him special no point in watching practice otherwise
13:09 was special-ish: you don't see many backhand smashes from the baseline.
6:38 sec, dammm.... the sound of the ball exploding off his racquet when he hit his topspin backhand, amazing shot
Hypnotic. Could watch for hours! ❤️
The pace they were hitting at one point... at least 70mph one way, with spin, .
7:00 - worth noting the full follow-thru arc/shape on the backhand - often a less flamboyant thing happens but this bigger version would obviously allow for smoother deceleration if needed
i think it looks more flamboyant
thank you for the recording, job well done. thank you for sharing.
Such a fluid, effortless serve motion
I left all of the footage in its raw format and speed, but as many of you may already know RUclips does allow you to play with it. thanks brian
Amazing footage! Thank you so much for uploading!
that kicker at 14:05...look at that action and movement!
Worth the wait Brian. Awesome material.
Great footage. I'm impressed by Rogers kick serve. No effort in the motion, just relaxed swing.
Amazing video. Thanks for sharing. I wish there was more of this!
"Guys."
"sorry :("
Hi
11:45 couple of mind boggling shots there, even for Federer. That forehand especially
10:18 he's like "gawdamn *plane!* - are you ever gonna land??"
thanks for the footage!
very relevant footage for miami 2019. still one of my favorite hitting sessions to watch. thanks again for uploading
Roger playing in a hat, that’s unheard of!
amazing footwork, always do the split step right before the opponents his the ball, thats why he never late
Could watch this for a few hours...
I love his shots!!
Federer looked as relaxed as a guy watching TV on his couch
Thanks Brian fr the footage:) Felix is scary good/talented
That backhand slice is so nice to see
thank you for the video!
this guy roger seems pretty good
Yeah, he's alright
gavi ciordel lmfaoo
No lie, the young girl volunteer controlling access to these stands had no clue about tennis. People were coming up asking to get in and she said "It is full up there, everybody wants to see this guy named Roger Fredrick". She wasn't joking.
Alan Nguyen ik you’re joking but I thought 7.0 was the minimum 🤔
Yes, he is not only pretty good, he's the best doper of all time. He is GDOAT.
Best footwork video
Could Roger become the first man to win a singles grand slam across 3 consecutive decades?
14:06 holy shit twist serve!!
Frank Fu, it’s called a kick serve. The ball bounces more than a normal serve.
@@lifeoftennis1285 kick serve no?
Daniel Wills yes that
Thank you very much! great job!!!
Felix hitting great! His backhand reminds me of Agassi
Just absolutely beautiful to watch.
... I mean,
That’s SUCH a good shot!
8:39
Did you know Felix and Roger both share the same birthday, the 8th of August! Same as mine too!
♌♌♌♌ (me too 😉)
Just want to say that Roger's hand and racket skills in batting back the other guy's volleys are amazing. That is so very difficult.
He is so casual, and standing RIGHT ON the baseline which makes it much harder. I love the moment at 13:09 where he was relaxed and instincts just kicked in and had no choice but to run and hit the crazy high backhand winner.
So true! That was an awesome moment and an amazing shot. Thanks for the footage. It is cool to see a practice session hit at such a great pace.
I was there. Thank you bro..😁
Look at his wrist action on the topspins. He starts forward action on backhand with the wrist bent back in a j-shape and ends it with the wrist laid back having flipped over the arm. Does exactly the same thing in reverse on the forehand. I tried it and it is as easy as it looks.
This practice is the like the Beethoven/Mozart music pieces which you hear to feel good...
FA-A has a nice pace in his groundstrokes but quite a lot of mistakes. Plenty of spin in that FH but the double backhand is very flat and he is often too close to the ball. But damn, living the dream at 17.

Federer's new boyfriend.

That is it my man,the key to great groundstrokes.
Well when you have an eastern grip your swing is naturally going to be much more horizontal than verticle, if you have a semi western or a full western brushing up behind the ball isn't entirely wrong.
Kenzie Aponte the principle is way too easy to misunderstand though so I don't understand why it's still being taught like that.
Brett McMillen well but you can work with your ball trajectory, nothing wrong with give the ball more loop
Ertugrul Körpinar true but hitting through the ball is key to consistency, pace, depth, having the ball not sail long, etc. Andre Agassi once said, the most important part of the tennis swing are the 6 inches before the ball and the 6 inches after the ball
As far as i know No players played top level like roger at age of 36...
a million soon
4:16 you rarely see Federer hopstep on his forehands in practice. Must be a little message to the newcomer
Its like you can feel time slowing down when federer backhand slices the ball back to back.
APairOfPants It does. His slice BH has so much spin the ball generates a gravitational force of its own and warps time.
When a practice video makes more views than the highlights of many grand slam matches lol
its his feet that make Rodger grestest tennis player of all time ,
I had coach who told me to just watch the male players from the waist down.......Federer, Borg, Djokovich and Edberg were amazing...:)
This shoes are beautiful, what is the name of the model ?
I know they are good and all but that is a nice court...
Sheenyl Hassan I agree, Indian wells courts are nice because of the location. The scenery is spectacular.
You can totally see the difference btw a "starter" pro player and a veteran pro player in this video.

i dont understand wat u mean by strength instant before contract to instant after contract
I want to understand the concept of how he initiates and ends the swing...
Thanks for sharing! Well at least with your video I have the best seat 8-)
He make it looks so easy.
So relaxing
Nice footage!
Great footage I was sitting a few seats away from you 👍👍👍
I wonder what the coaches say to players during practice session like this. Like "hey Fed, u messing it up, u have to go full motion" or what?
3:23 take notes guys. He just slice with a regular backhand grip
Paul C what do you mean ??
Federer can take the pace off any shot. He can do it relatively well on the forehand side. The fact he can do it on the backhand is IMO even better. Not sure if that makes any sense.
This shit is therapeutic i swear
His rally partner seems like to be in a real match while roger is like super relaxed
different personalities. Ever wonder why nadal/roger don't hit other than the obvious competitive rivalry (i.e. in earlier days)? Levi Dan de Castro same thought. Seems like a shity no rythm practice partner. Spraying like a 🐈
yeah its kinda fun to watch different personalities....but dude he is practicing with the g.o.a.t. Take it easy man lol
Fedtards believe that Roger never practices hard, that he just watches movies while others train hard. Fedtards are delusional creatures, completely insane.

Attention to Federer's legs. It has finely split steps. I am measuring the sense of distance with this. It is good.
Those shoes are insane
14:07 Is that magic?
Bits of Pulp is What, magic? That easy serve action? I think it’s just momentum..but it sure looks faultlessly easy
monster kicking service
Wow, nice Bouncing
You could set a clock with his feet shuffling and split step after each shot
amazing hands!
Any one-handers 'round here?
what shoes roger wears in this vid??
Fed is trying to ride that middle line between his typical relaxed/lazy practice sessions, and not getting clowned on by Felix - who is desperate to show how hard he can smack the ball at the GOAT
Yep, but it seems he would prefer to go full lazy :)
Am I the only one who is suprised/comforted by the fact that even the pros mishit/shank shots just while warming up?
Federer when i watch you, it looks how easy tennis is,
What shoes was Federer wearing?
3 things: Federer is awesome; what the hell are those shoes?; and, over-under for Felix's Grand Slam titles, I would say is 10.
ok, I just saw that those *are* actually Nikes. Do not look like Nikes *at all* - they were sure to rip those away from him fast. Lol. and never make shoes with such a tiny swoosh logo ever again.

looks like even the maestro gets stiff when trying to hit big and shanks, even in practice. fed fan but good confirmation that the dude is mortal

opposite FAA??
Good one👍
How does it look so easy
Is it Felix Auger Aliassime on the other side?
Just thanks
Is he playing with Nick Kyrgios?
Federer rocking those Air Max 95s
Was this just me or was Auger Aliassime in the back, hitting with Roger Federer
Yes, in the video description.
Camera angle too low. Film where Roger hits the ball
Hope that I'm wrong, but that's not Felix at the opposite side, right?
What if your not wrong?
Federer should come back from injury to play us open in a cap and 5 o'clock shadow.

Should have shown how the ball goes on the other side
Just realized the guy on the other side is Felix auger
yay Ian! did you guys do a trip with a bunch of people, then?
