12:58 No. Absolutely not. Metroid II has some of the most story in the entire series. It's not shoved in your face, but it's there. And Samus Returns disregards most of it.
Fair warning to people who haven't played Samus Returns yet for some reason even though you're watching this video Nate uses some spoiler footage. He doesn't talk about any big spoilers though so listening to it should be fine.
Here's what the Scan Pulse should have done: it goes to areas *connected* to the room you are in. Imagine an echo expanding outward, bouncing off solid walls and only going through open space. It will also go through doors and weak parts of the wall that can be destroyed, in case you were wondering. As it goes in more rooms, the pulse would lose power and weaken more. So if you were to use Scan Pulse in a linear tunnel area, the pulse would reach much further distances than usual.
The Prime trilogy is great stuff. Kind of surprised to see more recommendations for 2 than 3 in these comments (it's usually the other way around), but all of them are worth a try.
I highly recommend watching Mark Brown AKA Game Maker's toolkit analysis thing of Metroid AM2R, Samus Returns and Return of Samus, comparing them. Because he did a fantastic job at bringing up game feel as something that should be respected more as well as comparing all 3.
Guy you didn't mention it but the game looks AMAZING in 3D. I know a lot of people don't care for the 3D in a lot of games or as a function in general but I have a New 3DSXL and with its updated 3D functionality (easier on the eyes) it looks BEAUTIFUL! It really makes the colors pop and during the boss fights, looks amazing during rodeo animations and what not. I highly recommend it!
Tizz Ibwould disagree, they are too Backtrcky to an insane degree with too much padding, Take the teleporters out of SR and you basicly playing like Prime does
i personally disagree, i think super metroid is the best metroid games, i didn't really like metroid prime very much, though that's mostly because i'm not a huge fan of first person shooters.
Robert Wallen I would agree that prime 1 is really bad with its backtracking, but prime 2 has a much more interconnected map that makes going from area to area pretty quick. And no, taking the teleporters out of SR would not make it play like prime does since unlike in prime, SR never makes you revisit an older area to pick up a necessary item for progression. Once you leave say, area 3, you will never need to come back unless you miss an optional missile expansion or the like. And for the record: Super Metroid, which most people claim is the best 2d metroid game (idk I preferred SR), has no teleporters and tons of mandatory backtracking to look for progression items. The main reason prime 1 is criticized for its backtracking in spite of this is likely that when you go back for a story item, a lot of times there aren’t any optional pick ups you couldn’t reach before along the way there to reward careful exploring, as well as telling you exactly where to go: making the backtracking feel like backtracking instead of exploring
Currently playing through prime through the first time. It's so fucking backtracky that It just ruined my experience :/ just killed the omega pirate and I haven't touched the game in 2 days because the idea of searching the artifacts is so fucking lame
THANK YOU for actually appreciating the Scanner option. I personally never used it, but I'm so tired of people thinking it detracts from the game. It's an entirely optional feature that is merely there to save people time and act as a guide IF people want it. It's not required to use, even when you get it. I think it's the perfect balance for letting people choose how they want to play. #ISpentTwoHoursOfMyLifeBombingEverySurfaceICouldAndIHaveNoRegrets
Speaking of controls and the hand cramp issue (experienced it as well), a solution that they could have implemented to solve this would have been if instead of holding down the buttons to switch modes, you instead pressed once to toggle between the two. That way it would have been possible to avoid extended sections of just pressing the buttons down to do the same actions. Still, I think that the hand cramp issue has more to do with the awkward 3DS design rather than the game itself like you said. If this had been a Switch game with a Pro Controller I would have had no issue with hand cramp. Also, this game is fantastic. First Metroid game I've ever played and it was great. Got to finish the game in Hard Mode now! :D
Nintendo should hire the people who make popular, well made "hacked" games. I heard someone who made a Sonic hack was hired onto their team. Also, maybe a sixteen bit explosion sound would make a good WIAGW noise???
Felicity Swan why would Nintendo do that they now how to make great games (but it seems that they forgot how to make great paper mario games) they wouldn't need him
Interesting that you found a lot of mechanics that overpower you but feel awesome, because I feel that AM2R did something similar with the number of missile upgrades and power ups you get. Great video! I'm getting disgusted with people jumping on popular, relevant game bandwagons, but I really enjoyed listening to you talk about this.
As someone who has played both the OG Metroid II and AM2R, I think the timing mechanic for melee attacks is a HUGE relief. In both of those games, I kept dying so much because how hard it is to navigate tight areas, as well as the controls. It's even worse in AM2R because of the Zeta Metroids, which you DON'T want to be around with in a dark room. Almost died, and almost did stupid things too; I played it real smart. I'm good at using both keyboard and joy stick controls. Slightly more better with the keyboard than joy stick because at the time I emulated Fusion and Zero Mission, I did not have a USB cord to use controllers so I had to keep up with using only three keys at a time (it especially made the Nightmare boss fight in Metroid Fusion a REAL nightmare)...as for the joy stick, don't use the control stick in AM2R and use the D-Pad instead. Xbox One did their D-Pads SO right, but their control sticks are terrible compared to the 360 control sticks.
I don't think nintendo gave am2r the cease and the decease because were working on a remake, this is nintendo we're talking about, they would've done it regardless.
Probably heard this a dozen times but I recommend checking Mark Browns vid on the game if you haven't already Brings up some really good points in regards to the strengths in Metroid 2 and how well each game carried them over
I love this review. It is detailed and that helps a lot. You express your love for the game via arguments that strengthens my believe that I would not like the game too much. :D Thank you for this one.
Not sure why not one person mentioned the fact that Super Metroid has a Scan Visor. You get it pretty late in the game, but it exists. Metroid Prime has a scan visor that gives you information about what you scan, filling in a codex and such. (You have to get a 100% for that as well, which can be hard when you can't go back to certain areas so you're fuckt if you don't get the scans.)
wow, i stumbled upon on sheer random coincidence on my recommendations. i was dying, really close to pissing myself. You're pretty articulate, i think you should write for the completion or screw attack cause good god, do their scripts funking sunk. aaahhh nah man, your channel is legit, i like it. Your humor, enthusiasm, the way you speak, how hype you are, the gestures, you can just tell you really like doing this. It shows, their's passion in your work and i see it. This was absolutley amazing my dood. I'm legit a fan now, and i HOPE! you get bigger and strive more. But hey, dont be like game theorists, a funking cash out betch nanny who only pumps out content to get paid. So in conclusion, you're worth a shit. I'll funks with this channel. Lets see what other content you got.
You mean like downloading the map in Super Metroid and using the X-Ray vision to discover hidden blocks and paths. It seems to me that people have amnesia about the old Metroid games when they bitch about the pulse wave that fills out the map and shows you hidden blocks.
If you hack your 3DS, there's apparently an option to have the 3DS connect to your computer, and then have it pick up inputs from controllers on there. I haven't tried it my self yet, but who knows, maybe it'll be good for a replay?
I agree that the melee counter was great in boss fights, but I really hated using it against regular enemies because it encourages you to stand around and wait for the enemy to try and dive at you, particularly the flying enemies that you encounter throughout the entire game which are used to introduce the mechanic. Also I'm sure you'd enjoy the Prime games, particularly Prime 3 which is more narrative focused like Fusion, although with less dialogue than that game.
I agree on the map being a GOOD thing cause it helps let you know and appreciate more elements of the game in it's game design and more about the game that you want to experience. If you don't like it, don't use it. Having it helps especially those who are new to Metroid and want to understand it better. Especially me since I had no clue what Metroid was about until I started playing it more and realized the significance of power ups and exploration. Usually when I can't get somewhere I feel I'm stuck and put the game down- I later learned that you can go into more areas AS you progress and make progress in the game. I love game maps and strategy guides, they help me appreciate the game more upon future replays of it as well. Good job Metroid. :)
I think people exaggerate the power of the scan pulse. Even Super Metroid had map rooms that revealed an ENTIRE AREA and all there was to do was find the "secret areas". Samus Returns lacks such map rooms and I honestly think the scan pulse is a good middle ground for not having map rooms and not just having the game make you fill every single space on the map yourself. I also didn't mind it highlighting destructible blocks since having only certain areas that need to be bombed is.....maybe not the best game design in the world and for people trying to get 100% it could possible be seen as just a waste of time. Zelda always hints at what walls can be bombed but for some reason Metroid only does this a handful of times. Most of the time its a total guess that involves no actual skill to solve just patience, or you could use Supers shitty shitty scan visor. And then there are worse moments like in Super Metroid you just have to find out that a power bomb will destroy a glass corridor and lead you to progress. That was just bullshit and the scan pulse removes such bullshit. Yea..maybe I think Super Metroid might just be the worst 2D Metroid and everyone is just nostalgia blind because there was no other Metroid game for like 8 years after Super and it was the only one that imprinted on them as a child. The only one that got to be a "formative" experience. I seriously wonder how many modern fans love Super as much as people who played it as kids. I find with many youtubers who played the GBA and Prime games as kids don't really talk much about Super. They've played it...its just that they would rather run Zero Mission or Prime all day and barely play Super. As someone who grew up on Fusion and Zero Mission and didn't play Super until years later I found it awkward to control and obnoxiously cryptic at times. And honestly most of the people who still praise it was a masterpiece are 30-40 year olds who talk about how they played it 20 times as a child. "I don't care about those (Prime games) I only care about the Metroidvania ones." Prime literally just happens to be the only good 3D Metroidvania games that exist outside of Dark Souls and they preceded Dark Souls. Whip out a Wii U and play the damn things. They're great.
I started with Fusion, then later Prime 2, but I was always a bigger fan of the GBA-DS Castlevanias. Still can't get into Fusion, but Prime 2 warrants revisiting. Never played Super Metroid until Highschool (~2011, played it when I was 15 or 16) that I REALLY liked the series. It doesn't feel as tight as the GBA Metroids, and there's the occasional obtuse moment (the glass corridor isn't the only way into that level, you're not expected to go that way on a first playthrough), but I think it still has the best level design of the 2D games.
The way mapping worked in Hollow Knight was spectacular, just slap it onto every metroidvania ever and we good. Or make it so the scan reveals just "things" in general, without distinction. So you don't know if that dot you just revealed is a trap, an enemy, an upgrade, etc.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Metroid Prime 1 if you ever get around to playing it. I think you will really like it, but maybe not, and I would love to know why or why not :D
next Metroid game will be a sheet of paper with some checkboxes to get ticked, and Nate will praise it as the best Metroid game ever. I love you Guy, but man does your taste in games completely differs from mine.
Inception is a heist film that uses dreams. Paprika is an.....uh..art film(?) that has dreams in it. Honestly I don't see why people try to compare them so much. Both just have people dive into dreams but the meaningful comparisons stop there.
CherryBoyWriter To his defense, there's a reason. Paprika was cited as inspiration for Inception. I love Inception though, because the heist elements I found added to the main hook of the plot.
Inception is better in my opinion, it has better characters and is more emotionally satifying while also leaving quite a bit to speculation. OST, directing, acting, pacing, it does not have as much imaginative imagery as Paprika, but it does pretty much everything right.
People forget that theres a fucking map room in every Metroid game since Super Metroid. This game doesn't have one. Also this game has the fucking biggest areas in any Metroid game ever, so that scan pulse is very appropriate for this game.
My only gripe of this remake is that the little nice story parts of the original game are kinda lost? That feeling of genociding a whole species and then quietly leaving is kinda lost. You are countering enemies in self defense when in the original you were the agressor, you are always fighting enemies when in the original you or the metroids had cleaned the world of life. All in all, yeah, this is an evolution in gameplay, but dunno in storytelling.
Honestly, I can accept the melee counter because you're not doing it so you can run away, you're denying them the offensive so you can fuck them even harder. What I can't get behind is the presence of regular enemies all the way up to the end of the game, and even after you've found the baby Metroid. Part of the absolute horror of Metroid 2 was seeing just how dangerous the Metroids would be if they were just unleashed on another planet, and the lack of regular enemies was a perfect way of saying "Hey yeah these Metroids will probably wipe out all life on SR-388 if you just leave them, what would happen if you unleashed a shitload of them on a sentient species' homeworld?". And then the presence of enemies on your way out, just what the fuck. You just killed the Metroid Queen, you exterminated an entire species save for *one member*, you should be able to just sit back and reflect on everything you've done over the course of the mission. Christ, how did they fuck that up? Seriously, how did they fuck that up so hard? The gameplay is definitely a great evolution of 2D Metroid, but god damn did they fuck up on the storytelling aspect of it.
Yeah, but when the original came out, the X didn't exist, but now that this game was made after Fusion, killing the Metroids is done in this spectacle kind of way because of how unaware Samus is of the real threat and how eager she is to kill them.
I, too, watch Mark Brown's videos. I like most of his videos, but I feel like he's reading a little bit too much into Metroid 2 in that one. Not his finest imo
Great video I know you aren't really interested in the prime series but if you can (either by emulation or regular means) try the series out. Judging by what you liked about fusion I feel you might really enjoy the series. If you tried it and it wasn't for you then I understand but I only ask you give it a fair try before then. Keep up the great vids.
A sequel to Fusion would be the best fucking thing.... if the game's good at least. Samus the renegade bounty hunter on the run from the Feds? Sign me the fuck up BABY!
I don't think the Melee Counter is overpowered. I do think being forced to use it all the freaking time is stupid, though. Whatever happened to beans and missiles being the way until the Screw Attack was acquired?
You keep on using "metroidvania" to describe the 2d metroid games, and that's fine if your definition of metroidvania requires the subject to be 2d to count, but you should be aware that the prime games (which don't include other m) integrate the core mechanics and philosophies of a metroidvania very well. There are people who would have you believe that because they're in first person, they're just about shooting and violence and are basically call of duty. Those people are liars who use cartoon bears as their internet avatars. I will take your endorsement of SR into consideration, the game sounds great.
When he said "I don't care about those (Prime games) I just care about the Metroidvanias" I wondered if he thought that the Prime games were just Nintendos version of Doom or something. Thats what everyone was worried about when Prime was being advertised but were relieved when it released and turned out to be actual Metroidvanias.
Not surprising that the game has quicktime events if its from the same devs as Lord of Shadows. Also, if it's anything like the original or AM2R, the game does have a story. It just doesn't have endless lines of text and exposition.
I like the Melee Counter in SR, but it's a little bit broken IMO. But I think the game is balanced around that. Maybe I'm old and rusty, but the game was kinda hard and enemies used to withstand lots of shots; definitely more hits that in Metroid 1, (original 2 and AM2R), 3 and 4, even with the fully powered Plasma+Wave+Spazer beam. In the first half of the game, you are better off countering or freezing + missile'ing enemies because your shots only tickle them.
I agree with everything you're saying, and I hope the game sells well enough to officially revive Metroid. But have you really beaten the original Metroid on the NES? I've beaten Zero Mission, but never the original. That game is hard as shit, especially with no map, not even I've beaten that, and I'm a slut for Metroid. Pics of you beating the game or it didn't happen.
The first one is really really hard, even harder than metroid 2 (in terms of progression of course). Metroid on the NES is one of the most cryptic ones in the entire NES library. Secret passageways are everywhere and you literally have to bomb every tile to see what you can find. I got lost so many times as a kid with that game, not even kidding. Nonetheless, its a great game.
Well time to send Loud Nigra as the WIAGW sound
*Okay, I believe you*
damn dude, nobody shows the final boss, and you just raw as fuck show it in the middle of a sentence! that amused me for some reason
nate fucks dude
he certainly does
Nate doesn't care. He just raw dogs it.
12:58 No. Absolutely not. Metroid II has some of the most story in the entire series. It's not shoved in your face, but it's there. And Samus Returns disregards most of it.
Buying a grip for my 3DS was one of the best decisions ever. I highly recommend buying one on Amazon or something.
Fair warning to people who haven't played Samus Returns yet for some reason even though you're watching this video Nate uses some spoiler footage. He doesn't talk about any big spoilers though so listening to it should be fine.
Nate, how did Hillary have time to write What Happened when she's running the country?
She's just that good at time management.
are you doubting our president?
The scan, the aiming, the parry. Easy wall jumping, easy bomb jumping. CASUALS GET OFF MY METROID! REEEE
This was the best 3ds game we've had in a WHILE!
Here's what the Scan Pulse should have done: it goes to areas *connected* to the room you are in. Imagine an echo expanding outward, bouncing off solid walls and only going through open space. 8 bit "down with the sickness" is top kek
6:23 - free aim also came at the cost of enemy positioning and level design...

thank you so much best guy i have never found someone else that loves fusion as much as i do
oh jesus your only experience with prime was other m? do yourself a favor and just play prime 1+2
But Other M has nothing to do with Prime? In fact it retconned Prime out of the continuity (until Other M itself got retconned).
Yeah what this^^^ guy said. Pretty sure Other M was supposed to be a sequel to Super Metroid.
Prime 1 was the best imo.
Other M was a prequel to Fusion, it links the story with Adam.
MrLCGO The newest published timeline shows all Metroid games as canon and occurring in the same universe.
Play Prime and Prime 2 you animal. They're literally the best games in the series. Fight me.
Tizz in my opinion the 2D one are the best one...

I don't know why people say "it's been 15 years!" None of these guys knew this Metroid existed until maybe a year ago.
and once again you are the most agreeable man alive
Use the beginning of Mario RPG level up tune for WIAGW.
I think "yeah boi" would be the perfect sound for WIAGWA or whatever sound.
17:00 .....is that Sephiroth hugging The Coronal?

Also, maybe a sixteen bit explosion sound would make a good WIAGW noise???
Sega only does that because they can't make quality Sonic games themselves.
Felicity Swan the guy who did am2r, got a job at the company that did ori and the forest
Felicity Swan why would Nintendo do that they now how to make great games (but it seems that they forgot how to make great paper mario games) they wouldn't need him
The energy player focus on paper mario
Apparently Microsoft can appreciate him more than nintendo.

combine the gameplay of samus returns with the mood and atmosphere of super metroid and you'd have yourself the perfect metroid game
11:13 god bless you. HAHAHAHAHA!
Why not just use sound clip of Nico Robin moaning.
I second this!
I think you would like Metroid Prime, its basically metroidvania gameplay but in 3D
Do you think they will use the warrior Chozo faction shown in the chozo memories in a super/fusion remake or it will be in a Metroid 5?
I don't think nintendo gave am2r the cease and the decease because were working on a remake, this is nintendo we're talking about, they would've done it regardless.

"I don't care about those (Prime games) I only care about the Metroidvania ones."
Prime literally just happens to be the only good 3D Metroidvania games that exist outside of Dark Souls and they preceded Dark Souls.
Whip out a Wii U and play the damn things. They're great.
Thanatos388 and let's not forget super had the x-ray scan to see where secrets where but it was just slow to use
Can you share your thoughts on the new Star Trek series so far?
360 degree aiming.
The way mapping worked in Hollow Knight was spectacular, just slap it onto every metroidvania ever and we good.
Or make it so the scan reveals just "things" in general, without distinction. So you don't know if that dot you just revealed is a trap, an enemy, an upgrade, etc.
i actually kinda like this noise, it's ironic. i find it amusing.
11:16 every anime :P
Nani?!
1:35 Nate has chosen my custom made AM2R cover I've uploaded on imgur? Ikku!
#NotMyArtworkThough
Who would hate you for liking Fusion the best? That game is fucking fire.
Your thumbnail had me fooled.
Theres an anime movie called paprika please watch it its inception done right
Inception is a heist film that uses dreams. Paprika is an.....uh..art film(?) that has dreams in it. Honestly I don't see why people try to compare them so much. Both just have people dive into dreams but the meaningful comparisons stop there.
Thanatos388 Anime fans are literally sluts for comparisons.
Don't shake Hillary like that! She gets easily dizzy.
How could you betray Mumkey like that? :,(
Fusion is my favorite as well :D
>Muh Mark Brown
Do yourself a favor and unsubscribe from his channel. That was never the focus of Metroid II.
Well, I disagree
I've read the colored version of One Piece, I found the coloring to be fantastic personally, it uses the color scheme of the anime.
i didn't know the guy from Epic Meal Time plays lots of vidya games
Rose-shrouded Confessor So that's what happend to musscles glasses.
I love that noise. Keep it! 🤣
Keep the Hockey Foghorn it's a nice touch
I thought you were Dookieshed for a second.
Another Fusion > Super aficionado? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck yess
I think stock party favor sound affects would be best.
Hey BestFantanoEver
I actually broke the slider or whatever you call it on my old 3ds while fighting the last boss I will not spoiler you but I did beat him anyway ;)
A sequel to Fusion would be the best fucking thing.... if the game's good at least. Samus the renegade bounty hunter on the run from the Feds? Sign me the fuck up BABY!
new x-cop ray
sexy new WIAGW noise
I don't think the Melee Counter is overpowered. I do think being forced to use it all the freaking time is stupid, though. Whatever happened to beans and missiles being the way until the Screw Attack was acquired?
Hmmm, Fusion...
We could make a great multiplayer game out of this one...
Dude, just make the patreon rewards your shades. Hand write "Best Guy Ever" on each of them and send those out.
Play the Prime games(except federation force). You're missing out these masterpieces
AM2R is all you need.
Metroid 2 was always the best metroid, no surprise here
You keep on using "metroidvania" to describe the 2d metroid games, and that's fine if your definition of metroidvania requires the subject to be 2d to count, but you should be aware that the prime games (which don't include other m) integrate the core mechanics and philosophies of a metroidvania very well.
Thats what everyone was worried about when Prime was being advertised but were relieved when it released and turned out to be actual Metroidvanias.
hey i have that same model of 3ds!
Not surprising that the game has quicktime events if its from the same devs as Lord of Shadows.
Also, if it's anything like the original or AM2R, the game does have a story. It just doesn't have endless lines of text and exposition.
Its doesn't have QTEs though.
Who's Rich?
Fran Materaki is bae, genetic engineering be damned. Our kids are going to be absolutely *stunning* after she's through with them... 😈👶
