Arantxa made the best decision going to UKvTW instead of Espana All Stars. While she got exposed to a larger audience and was universally beloved by fellow contestant and viewers alike (even not doing that well in the competition), the Espana All Stars girls got a lot of drama and hate - and most of what happened was out of their control

I think it's also important to point out the finale. Clearly the popular vote wanted Samantha to win. Also, it seems that most viewers (myself included) felt that Sethlas lost the first finale lipsync against Hornella. Production also allowed her to jump from the judges booth on the final lipsync which seemed too desperate (and even disrespectful) in the viewers' eyes. It's not Sethlas fault at all. Production's differential treatment affected how we all felt for this season. Hope they learn from their mistakes

Controversial opinion: the javis are running the show and their opinion is the only one that counts. The javis call are the shots and the favoritism of production is just a reflection of the javis own bias. Even more, the javis seem to have anna locking restricted to only judge based on fashion and styling but she is not allowed to comment on anything else. Supreme is just a place holder drag queen for the javis to pretend that the show is actually run by a drag queen but in reality Supreme has no say about any important decision on the show. I started noticing this on s2 after they kept saving Samantha just because they liked her, then s3 became just too obvious that the show was running by their likes and favorites. I recall watchin the short javi about to redirect the conversation to ana and he said "ana, the fashion...." and I immediately thought "anna is there for the clothes, Supreme is there for the illusion of a local rupaul like person" but the real judging and decision is coming from the bootleg boulet brother like couple aka the javis

My opinion that nobody asked but still i'm going to talk about this season:
    Positive things:
    - the cast
    - challenges performance ( rarely some performances like sagittaria's snatch game were bad)
    - Samantha & Juriji rudemption
    - Sethlas dominating the season , even though ( this will be also in my negative things )
    - Pupi finally won a snatch game
    - for the most part it was an entertaining season.
    - the runways ate down.
    Negative things:
    - the pakita's mistreatment
( I mean she could ve top 2 in the talent show, high for the snatch game and wasn't bad to be bottom 2 in the ball)
    - Sethlas favoritism in some ways
( Like honestly she shouldn't have win the ball, but if we were fair , she should have been top 2 in the girl groups)
    - Samantha some favouritism
( Love her , happy that finally she get some recognition, but she shouldn't be high in the snatch game and top 2 in the girl groups)
    - Sagittaria some mistreatment
( Like i get it , she should have been in the top 2 in the ball , but it was fair that she should have been in the bottom 2 for girl groups)
    Conclusion:
I really like this season for the most part , better than españa 3 , but not better than españa 1 and 2 , i was sad that juriji didn't make it to the top 2 for the crown , but anyways congratulations to sethlas she deserves it. It was a nice try for españa to redeem herselfs for the last season, but i hope españa 4 would be better than this.

i've said the same thing to my boyfriend at the time. much like pitita, sethlas was dominating the game there was no need to push them because they're probably gonna get to the finale with a great track record anyways. sethlas could've been either high or low for the ball and the final product would still be the same. IF sagi had a top 2 that day maybe she wouldn't flip on production like she did.

Rightfully so, I haven’t watched the season but I just looked over the looks, it’s very clear to me that Juriji and Sagittaria were the top two, I can see clearly how well constructed Sagi's gown was compared to others, and Juriji had the best concept. Sethlas's look should honestly be low.

I'm glad you brought up the story arc of Sagittaria. Sethlas, Pupi and Samantha dogpiling her for no reason soured me on the season more than the Sethlas favoritism tbh. Seasons 1-2 of España also had winners who bulldozed the competition but production still allowed all the other queens to shine in their own way. On the other hand, Season 3 and All Stars sacrificed and pushed aside all the other queens in order to prop up the winner that would have bulldozed the competition anyway.

also it wasn't just ep3 that annoyed me, in the next ep, it was the "the far can we break Sagittaria" game, and also for the other 2 eps, they were all still talking shit ab her even after she left. they literally had nothing narratively to add after their martyr left, so they kept bringing her up.

  • @diegopinedacamero5451
    @diegopinedacamero5451 4 месяца назад +8

3 things in my opinion that hurt this season:
    1. Biased judging: it's very evident in the ball challenge with all the drama, but overlooking Pakita in the first 2 episodes was sad for me. The biggest problem with the production was that it was so obvious that Sethlas was their choice to win.
    2. The mistreatment of Sagittaria: completely agree with you! They tried to push the narrative that Sagi is stupid and just because of that her opinions and feelings were not valid.
    3. Sethlas twitter reaction: it added even more to the fuel that Sethlas wrote on Twitter "la envidia tiene nombre" which means the envy (or the jealousy depending on the context) has a name. This continues the narrative that Sagi can't have an opinion on the production (even Sagi told her respectfully "I don't agree with how this episode was judged"), because it wasn't personal, she was calling out the production. Even Sethlas had to deactivate her Twitter because fans called her out about her behavior and Drag Vulcano (Sethlas friend) was super aggressive towards Sagi and her fans, I understand she wanted to defend her friend but it was really chaotic to say the least.
Anyway, I enjoyed the season and I think there were some highlights and the majority of the queens ended the season winning something:
Juriji: cementing herself as the fan favorite, winning challenges and most importantly being herself in the werkroom and the confessionals. Her life journey is amazing and it's really good to see her fully realized self.
Pupi: finally winning a snatch game! It was the best feeling.
Pakita: the "robbed" queen. Sometimes losing is the new winning and it resonates with the fans.
Sagi: i think the drama fueled her fan favorite status. She was THE meme queen of the season intentionally or not. And how she handled everything was really good to see.
Samantha: what a glow up! She managed to adapt her persona and drag to Drag Race (something really hard for some drag legends who flop in the show), she was funny, she was lovely, had great runways and it felt really good to see.
I love Hornella and Onyx but this wasn't their time. Onyx is THE alternative look queen of the Spain franchise, but her persona is not for a format like drag race. And Hornella is underrated, I need her on a Vs the world where she can receive her flowers.

    • @johnknight1216
      @johnknight1216 4 месяца назад

I would love to see Hornella in a vs the world season (not sure if she speaks English but anyways would love to see her). She was my favourite and even though I don't think she should've won any challenge that she didn't win instead of someone else, I'm still sad we didn't get to see "more of her" since the storyline did not revolve or involve her much

  • @cjcw32

In my opinion they wanted to crown a Canarian winner at all costs, but not necessarily on a main season, so All Stars was the perfect opportunity to do it. Canarian drag is a weird paradox here in Spain, on the one hand the Canary Islands is like synonymous with drag, the drag galas during carnival are hugely popular and are even shown on national tv, but on the other hand there is this idea, particularly on mainland Spain, that the quality of the drag is a bit naff and samey (the platform shoes, no wigs, body suits, feathers). And I think the show in all three regular seasons before All Stars leaned into both these aspects, the judges would talk about their respect for traditional Canarian drag and how it has paved the way etc, but then they would bemoan how the looks are all too samey or that they didn't take care of the details (they were particularly harsh on Drag Vulcano and Drag Chuchi). So the general perception was starting to become one that the judges/show were being disingenuous, and that they did not truly appreciate Canary drag as much as they were saying. So along comes All Stars, they invite Sethlas back, who is arguably the more "polished" and versatile Canarian queen of the franchise, and this was the shows chance to put things right. A thing you mentioned a few times was that Sethlas was a fan favourite from her season, from personal experience I wouldn't really say that was the case. Jurijee was thee stand out fan favourite from season 2, meanwhile Sethlas was seen as bit too serious and annoying (or at least amongst my friendship groups). Like you said, she definitely could have won the season without the help of production and people would have been like "OK fair play, she deserved it" but the blatant favouritism has left yet another black mark on the franchise.

I hope ES gets back to form, there’s so much potential, but production needs to figure it out.

I agree with your analysis of the damage control of Sagittaria calling out production. What’s funny is that that sequence could simply not have made the final edit. That’s what the RPDR productions commonly do. In AS8, a lot of queens apparently called out riggory on camera and yet the final edit merely suggested Heidi disagreed with the judging to explain why she left the competition.
The fact they included it in the final edit makes me think production wasn’t confident in post prod they’d manage to convince the audience with the rush they had, so they kept the Sagittaria sequence to preemptively create a delulu edit and convey it would be stupid to believe the game is rigged.

For me, as a spaniard quite vinculated to spanish drag scene, the problem is one (and a huge one): Drag Race España is completly disconected from spanish drag scene and it own audience.
They did quite good in S1 and S2 because of the spontaneity of those casts, the contest let them be free and their personalities and their work where the spot of the season. But after those seasons they have tried to be something more like an american reality I guess, with more drama and looking for the reactions from the audience on social media, but they don't know how to mange it correctly, they don't understand that people don't expect the same from USA than from Spain.
But it's just an opinion. I guess they are getting what they want because it seems this is going to be the way the show will drive its narrative from now, as far I know.

Also despite Sethlas being portrayed as the moral winner of the fight against Sagittaria she kept bringing her up all season long even after she was long gone. The edit they gave Sethlas was too positive so it basically made her look like a bully who punches down and gets protected by the teacher. Compare this to Plane Jane in s16 who "won" the fight against amanda and did bring her up later on (although not as much) but seing as she was potrayed as an antihero/villain no one really cared as much. They should've either made sethlas an antihero or just not include the moments of her being bitter.

The fact that they haven't allowed later seasons to run organically, giving room to unpredictable moments, just shows that they don't know the audience at all. Casting is done so well every year, they seriously need to let the queens talent be the show.

To me what made the season bad was the judging. Sethlas did do well in the season but after win in the ball I noticed that they were gonna crown her. It felt like they gave her a free pass to win the season no matter how bad she would perform. Like in the final episode she didn’t win neither of her lip syncs yet they wanted her to win. I think that’s why her win doesn’t feel justified because in the very two episodes she did falter production just saved her or straight up rewarded her.

Your closing statement about how episode 3 messed up the season for so many fans really speaks more on how short sighted and ridiculous the fan base can be than anything else.
This season was packed full of talented queens that brought entertainment, fashion, humour.. the lot. And yet that can be largely disregarded and forgotten because some people are salty about the judges choices on one episode…
And because a noisy vocal “majority” run their mouths on Twitter suddenly that’s the perspective of all the fans and the legacy for the season?
Thats honestly so nutty. Also you talk about things like a group consensus of % values for runways on balls.. thankfully you admit that that isn’t official from the show because clearly it’s not and their isn’t consistent evidence to support it.

    • @frandynamo2143
      @frandynamo2143 4 месяца назад +3

The only thing consistent about DR is that it’s inconsistent. S16 Plane Jane won the makeover challenge with a “twin” look and we have seen it before when the judges and production will pick and choose when that is a good or a bad thing.
It’s a tv show with a lot of bullsh1t and yet these nutty fans take a bunch of hate to the queens for things that are often not in their control or even remotely “their fault”.
It just sucks. “Support your local drag” comes to mind. How this season can be considered to you as a second strike against expana over one episode is wild.

It’s especially disappointing seeing the parallel with Samantha coming back and really showing why All Stars was created, just for it to be invalidated because the cards were stacked against her (which is wild considering she’s also a production fav and a close friend of Supremme). Had it honestly been fair, Sethlas and Samantha would have been more on par with each other and Hornella wouldn’t have got carried as far as she did, giving her an overall disappointing showing on her return. Juriji despite winning two challenges was virtually invisible in the edit until the finale. The edit was the nail in the coffin bc even that was stacked in Sethlas’ favor. No shade to her but every challenge (except snatch game) was something to make Sethlas look better than everyone else.

I had such a completely different issue than most with that season. I understood why Sethlas had to be high about the ball; what happened to her after her performance at Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and how she was targeted gives her political importance in the context of queer Spain well beyond Drag Race so when she highlights that moment with an exceptional look, possibly the best of the night, it has to be showcased. I do think she should have been just high. But I just did not see Sagi's point of view there. Yes, Sagi had the better constructed look but she completely failed in the runway presentation of Lust. Sethlas' look was basic but it was very effective, Sagi gave a completely covered up look for Lust and embarassingly trying to use a whip so softly I could hear Alexis Michelle scream "harder". I've always felt that runway prompts should matter way more than they do and if you fail to meet the prompt, it doesn't matter if your look make my jaw drop, you shouldn't be winning.
My issue was Pakita. Her final look was absolutely gorgeous, it was also a political statement in its own right. The look itself depicted Wrath mainly through reference (which is what Art often does) and her runway presentation was exceptional and theatrical. Like Sethlas, it was performance art only she actually had a complex look on the runway as well. And from the edit we saw, Samantha should have been safe on Snatch Game with Pakita on the third high spot (though not top)
So it's not just about whether Sethlas was favored. The entire elimination Order felt predetermined. They wanted to keep Hornella so they kept her from being low in this challenge although she was nearly as bad as Pupi.
And after that I felt the fandom just went crazy with discrediting Sethlas every time she so much as breathed on set. It's just sad that they did not just keep Sethlas high for that challenge and if they wanted to give her a fourth win, she could have easily won the girl group challenge over either Samantha or Sethlas; they were all so evenly matched imo.

  • @vichycatalan

I agree completely that Sethlas' win was unjustified and completely wrong. However, acting like this is the "second strike" for España that tarnished the entire season in an otherwise really great show is, honestly, pretty insincere to me.
I think people hold España in super high regards thanks to the first two seasons, but as we are seeing this is also the reason people have a huge magnifying glass on the season and blow everything out of proportion. This isn't the first nor the last time Drag Race has made baffling decisions. And I'm not talking easy targets the likes of Down Under 1, Holland 2, US 13, UK 3 or Italia 1, I'm talking about seasons that are generally well received or middle of the road. Jorgeus' ball win in US 14, Dakota's bottom placement in UK 4, Pearl winning over Trixie on the lipsync in season 7, Jinkx winning the lipsync over Monet in AS7, several makeover challenges like Yvonne winning in Germany... Most of us (not everyone, it's subjective) as viewers see these as bad decisions. However, they are still well liked seasons that weren't completely ruined by it.
España All Stars checked on almost every aspect. The comedy challenges landed even for international viewers, the fashion was top tier, the talent show was spectacular and, despite what transpired in and out of the show, seeing the Sagi/Sethlas drama was pretty entertaining. The only crimes this season committed were messing up the positions in the Ball episode (I don't think Pakita should have been in the bottom) and mistreating Sagi in the edit. That's it. Most of everything else was some of the best drag from last year! If this is really all that needs to happen in a season to have a distaste for it, no season of Drag Race gets spared, or very few. Non-english seasons really don't need to be easily discarded in this way.
Comparing this to España 3 which was riddled with problems is just... Just no, honey. And I say this as someone that wanted Samantha to win. But I just can't be mad at Sethlas winning since she killed every other episode. Like, there's a universe where she was in the top in the girl group episode and that would have been justified as well.
TL;DR: Yes, episode 3 was poorly judged. But singling out this one decision and saying this is the second strike towards an amazing franchise and implying that another bad decision might be the final nail in the coffin is just wrong. If this were the case, Down Under should be in the gutter by now. And, well, it isn't. (Holland is a different can of worms).

She could have easily won 3 challenges in all fairness and leaving the ball with a Top Top placement. But you can see she was really pushed the last 2 episodes bcs her roast wasn't that funny and Hornella surprisingly beat her :0 but it was obvious the outcome at the end.

I'mma be real, it was a good, enjoyable season and it wasn't that rigged.
The ball has a concept to embody, Sethlas had two of the best looks of the night, and one of a few looks that actually embodied their sin. In a lineup I can tell that's pride. Wtf is Sagittaria's? Lust is the easiest sin to represent and she made a nice red dress. (That didn't hit the floor) I'm pretty sure she was even coached into making it sexier by Anna Locking and didn't.
Most of the criticism was about how you embodied the assigned sin, and it was like that to everyone meaning it was fair. It being different than what the audience expects doesn't make it rigged.
And then Sethlas should've won the girl group too.
