David Wheater I look forward to watching the other videos in the series. I’ve actually watched this one many times now. 😃 May I ask for the playlist? I just love your choice in music! Some day, I will see Scotland for myself, but until then, your videos are so wonderful to watch. Thanks again and stay healthy!

Just done a DNA test 83% Scottish and 17% Irish I was born in New Zealand. On my Dads side (surname Sutherland) they came from Sutherland & Caithness. Never got to see this part of Scotland when I came over from Australia 3 years ago. I'll never get back so thanks for the video!! Great to see it and think that's where ancestors hailed from.
Hi Karen, so glad that I was able to show you this amazing part of Scotland. I meet many people with roots to this part of the world and I think it's nice that people are able to see where their relatives have come from. It's a very special place. Warmest best wishes, David :-)

We are planning to visit again for the International gathering of Clan Sutherland in June next year. Definitely have now put the Scottish Highlands on our list...again thank you

Thanks Alan, always appreciate your kind words and support. You're so right about the northern Highlands being so unspoilt and timeless. It's very hard to articulate how I feel when I'm up there, I can only describe it as a deep connection and resonance with the land, that you can only really sense when you're there. The flow country isn't perhaps as dramatic as Glencoe, or as pretty as Loch Lomond, but I feel it has more soul and, for me, feels very spiritual. Hi Jim, hope you're well. Yes, they can look a bit daunting, but you get used to them very quickly and lots of passing places are provided so there's nearly always one when you need it. The cabin is fantastic. I felt so chilled out there and didn't really want to leave! It's a very beautiful part of the country and I visited all my favourite beaches which are just stunning, which will be coming up in the next videos. I even rolled my jeans up and did a little paddling. It was total bliss. Thanks again for your support. Best wishes, David :-)

It's hard to do these beautiful counties justice, especially when you have to film on the run, but hopefully I can get back soon and do a little better :-) I love this region with all my heart and I can throughly recommend visiting. Make sure you put aside a decent length of time to visit as there's so much to discover, especially around the coast. Thanks again for watching. Warmest best wishes, David :-)

Hi Anne, so glad you enjoyed this. My heart really belongs to this incredible area. There’s a spirit & resonance in the land that I feel every time I go and I really do believe it to be one of the most beautiful areas, not just in Scotland, but in the world. I hope to get back next year and do some more exploring, particularly around Skerray & Melness and hopefully film too. Hope you’re doing ok and thanks again for taking the time to watch and your very kind words. It’s hugely appreciated. When I filmed these I was very troubled by nerve damage, so it was quite a challenge, but I’m improving a bit so hopefully next time I’ll be more comfortable and be able to relax more. Hope you’re having a lovely weekend. All the best, David 🙂
Thanks Madalina, I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos. The older I get, the more I love my country and I love the challenge of trying to capture it on film. I really appreciate your support and hope you can visit soon. Best wishes, David :-)

If you have any questions about visiting Scotland, or the Scottish Highlands, please don't hesitate to ask. You can find out more about where to visit in Scotland on my new website: www.adventuresinscotland.uk. It goes without saying that you should only visit the Scottish Highlands when it is safe to do so and permitted by current Government regulations & restrictions.

Beautiful guide 💯💙🏴 I’ve been a lot of places in the world but Scotland is my favourite for sure. It’s so hard to tell which region is my favourite because the whole country is gorgeous but Sutherland and Isle of Skye so far is my favourite and just like u I feel like i did had previous life in sutherland despite the fact that i was born in Russia.Scotland forever 🏴💙 Ps the channel is outstanding and got my instant subscription and hopefully soon will order tour guide to Edinburgh with u💯 Keep it up mate, great work and content 💯

@@DavidWheaterScotland North is my thing as well, forever and after and u r totally right about Scotland,it’s beyond beautiful both in scenery and history (as i am huge history buff, especially of Scottish history and life in general of Scots) after 2 months ago when I went to Golspie(Dunrobin castle) first i was blown away of beauty of Sutherland region while driving through it and couldn’t help myself and stopping almost every few miles 🌞💙🏴 I’ll give u shout once me and girlfriend heading to Edinburgh because it’s no doubt that such tour guide is essential especially from someone who understands and knows the stuff 💯 Once again, many thanks for deluxe and quality stuff David 🙌🏻 Next year holiday was already decided: Sutherland and Orkney 😄💯💙🏴🙌🏻
@@nirvana30776 so glad you loved Sutherland Ren, it’s a really wonderful county and I know exactly what you mean about having to stop all the time - the brakes on my car are always worn out with all the stopping I do up there! There's been a couple of changes since you made this wee film! Carbisdale Castle is now a private concern and Lady is now in residence and is not open to the public!! The roof of the wee church in Altnaharra got destroy with fallen trees and was still in state of disrepair mid Spring 2022 and door is locked to visitors!
Thanks for the update, it’s much appreciated. I’m incredibly sad to hear about the church. I absolutely loved it and I think it would be incredibly sad to lose it. Fingers crossed someone will rescue it. Thanks for watching, all the best, David 🙂
Thanks Karen, hope you're well. I was so blessed to get some wonderful light over the trip. That night I went out about 7pm and it was raining, so I didn't expect to do much filming, but that rainbow just suddenly appeared when I was having a coffee on the Kyle of Tongue causeway and I grabbed my camera and leapt out into the rain. It didn't last long, but was incredibly beautiful. A very special moment. Thanks for all your support, hope you enjoy the series. I visited some incredible places and can't wait to share them. Best wishes, David :-)
I'm originally from Kinbrace, about 17 miles north west of Helmsdale. Sutherland is forgotten about by most of the country. Thankfully the NC500 is bringing some attention. Hopefully people learn about the period during the Clearances.
Thanks Trev. Very much appreciate you leaving a comment. Yes, it does seem to be largely forgotten about, but it’s an extremely important part of Scotland to me and one I love very much. There’s a real spirit to the land and I agree not enough is taught about the history and people of these wonderful counties. Best wishes, David
Thanks Janet, there’s the most wonderful little church in Altnaharra which I adore. The last time I was there, there was a stag roaming around just outside and it was a wonderful sight. It’s just so special up there and I can’t wait to go back. Have a lovely evening and thanks again for taking the time to comment 🙂
David, you say at the start of the video, ‘few people visit Sutherland’. I think I know the reason why. Charlie & Craig, told us, ‘Sutherland no more’. 😂

Assynt and Sutherland (and Lowlands) are about the only places I haven't thoroughly explored, look forward to doing that some day and your videos make me want to visit again soon.
Thank you, that's really kind of you and much appreciated.
Wow, beautifukky put together movie, it's been to long since i've been up north, this brings back happy times memories and a longing to return, many thanks.
Thanks so much for watching Dave, I’m really glad you enjoyed it and it brought back good memories. It’s a very special part of Scotland for me and I’m hoping to do a bit more exploring and filming up there next year. Warmest best wishes, David 🙂
Another beautiful video I lived in Blair Atholl for a, while shared a house with a lady from Lairg I often wondered what it was like realy nice, Tongue looks beautiful the light on the mountains and bog cotton, beautiful views of the Lochs and fabulous wee burns even better nobody there, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful place with us
Hi Anne, so glad you enjoyed this.
You have an absolutely beautiful country. Thank you for what you are doing. :)
Thanks Madalina, I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos. The older I get, the more I love my country and I love the challenge of trying to capture it on film. I really appreciate your support and hope you can visit soon. Best wishes, David :-)
@@DavidWheaterScotland I will most certainly visit agait. A week was not enough time.
Loved going up to Sutherland to fish for brown trout. I used to stay at the overscaig hotel at the top end of loch shin.
Hi Craig, thanks for getting in touch. I've been fishing up there for over forty years and it's still one of my favourite things to do. I know the Overscaig Hotel well, it's a great fishing base for the area. Thanks for commenting and I hope you manage to get up there for many more fishing adventures. Best wishes, David
Excellent, Ive done parts of this route several times - great memories..
Thanks Laurie, so glad you enjoyed it and it brought back some good memories. It's such a beautiful part of Scotland and I always feel the better for visiting. Hope you have a lovely day and thanks again for watching. Best wishes, David :-)
Thanks, Working on my family genealogy, I found out recently that my 3 Grt. Grandfather came from near Lairg to settle in Nova Scotia. So it was interesting to see the area from where he came.
Thanks Charles, really glad you were able to see some of the land of your forebears. It's a part of Scotland I have great affection for and hope to go back and film more from around the area soon. Thanks for watching, all the best, David :-)
Great video, Lairg has been home now for nearly 8 years and I’m still exploring new places.
Thanks so much for watching. I really appreciate it. I’ve been visiting and staying in Lairg nearly every year since I was very young and it’s still one of my favourite areas of the country. So glad you’re enjoying living there and exploring. It’s really magical. Warmest best wishes, David 🙂
This seems to be a very interesting place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job! Subscribed!!
Thanks so much for watching. It’s a really fantastic part of Scotland and I can really recommend visiting. Thanks also for subscribing, it’s much appreciated. All the best, David 🙂
Got my vote mate. 👍

Some of the scenery is spectacular.
Thanks Nicole, so glad you enjoyed it. It really is a spectacular county and so beautiful. Hope you’re having a good weekend and thanks for watching. All the best, David 🙂
Brilliant video💙
Thanks Mecklenburg. I'm so pleased you like it - it's really made my day :-) I have been wondering lately whether to continue with RUclips. It can be quite lonely making these videos and it means the world to me when lovely people like you get in touch. I really hope you enjoy your time in Scotland and if you need any help or tips where to visit please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks again for both your lovely comments. All the best, David :-)
Brilliant
Thanks Phil, I really appreciate it :-)
Beautiful guide 💯💙🏴 I’ve been a lot of places in the world but Scotland is my favourite for sure.
Thank you Ren, really appreciate you watching & subscribing. I’m so glad you feel the same way about Scotland as I do. Like you, it’s hard to say which is my favourite region, we’re spoilt for choice, but I do love the far north. Hope you can visit soon and always happy to show you around Edinburgh. Best wishes, David 🙂
Would be absolutely delighted to show you around Edinburgh when you visit. Thanks again for all your kind words, best wishes, David 🙂
Thanks for watching, all the best, David 🙂
nice place with spacious plain.
Thanks for watching, it's much appreciated. Best wishes, David
Wow, beautiful! Thanks for taking us along on your trip. How did you arrange for that spectacular rainbow at the end? :-)
Just caught up with this one. Just so open and remote. I'm sure I have been to Altnaharra.
Lol - how right you are Gary - love it! 🎶🤣
Its a shame seeing Edinburgh and the House of Bruar without people there.... It just doesnt look right... Who is that beautiful singer you are using, and thanks for another great video
Hi Ian, apologies for not putting the music on. I'll put the credits up asap. Glad you enjoyed the video and here's hoping we can get back to normal as soon as possible. Best wishes, David :-)
@@DavidWheaterScotland No apologies needed David, that womans voice was just so beautiful.... But it was just sad to see videos like yours and Tony's showing your home towns without people there....We are hoping to move to Scotland within 2 years and we thoroughly enjoy watching videos of Scotland... Keep up the great work
@@ianmartin5783 Apologies for the delay in replying Ian. Yes, it was so strange seeing everywhere so empty, it was really quite eerie, but things are much busier now thankgoodness which will be so vital to the survival of a lot of businesses in the city. Hope you have a great week :-)
Excellent video David and Music!;Any chance of a link to the accommodation in Tongue please ?
Thanks David, I'm in touch with the owner and will get back to you shortly. Best wishes, David :-)
I have actually this week been thinking about a trip up there. I don’t drive but notice there are buses from Thurso through Bettyhill to Tongue
Maybe next year March or Sept
Some great shots there beautiful video
Hi Dun Eideann, thanks for watching, it’s greatly appreciated 🙂 Yes, with a bit of planning it is possible to do a lot on public transport. It really is worth making the trip, I still regard these counties as some of the most beautiful in the world and I’m sure you’d enjoy it. Thanks again for watching and hope you have a lovely day. All the best, David 😊
I would love to go there someday..
Hi Rick, thanks for commenting. Yes it really is a beautiful part of Scotland and well worth the effort to get there. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you can visit soon. Best wishes, David
Thanks,
We're Dutch and august 2022 we are going to make the same trip and stay in Tongue for two weeks ;o)
Hi Triple Traple, that's wonderful! I'm so glad you'll be able to experience the region in person, as there's a spirit and presence to the land that you can only feel if you're there. Hope you have a wonderful time. Best wishes, David :-)
@@DavidWheaterScotland 2019 we stayed at Dornie, wonderful time, Skye has unbelievable scenery, to much toerist (like us😆), so went to Westeros, wow thats more our place, so now going to try the far north 😉
Really glad I’ve inspired you to discover Caithness & Sutherland. It’s a truly spectacular region and well worth exploring. Warmest best wishes, David

Thanks Sarah, I absolutely love it up there. I think it’s a part of Scotland that’s still quite unvisited, but for me it’s one of the best parts of the country. There’s a real spirit to the land. Thanks for commenting. All the best, David 😀👍
@@DavidWheaterScotland It truly is. I just finished the other parts and absolutely loved them! The beaches.... oh my...a dream. I'm planning a roadtrip for next year and remote areas are my favorit, so i will definetly drive up there! Thank you 😊
Hi Sarah, I’m so glad you’re going to visit. It’s well worth the effort. Take your time if you can. So many people rush through on the North Coast 500 and miss so much. Hope you have a lovely time. All the best, David
@@DavidWheaterScotland thank you David! I've got 5-6 weeks 😄 Btw, do you have a recommendation for a good haggis? I really like it 😋 have a nice day 🌻☀️
Hi Sarah, that’s brilliant you’ve got so much time. You can enjoy lots of picnics on the beach 🏖. Our favourite haggis is Macsweens. We buy it here in the shops, but you may be able to order it online. I think they do a veggie one too. Hope you have a lovely week. All the best, David ps if you’re looking for some haggis in Edinburgh I can really recommend the Haggis Box which is takeaway and makes for a great lunch 👍
Loved the video and especially the music. Is there a reason you do not give the female singers name and albums?
Hi J, really glad you enjoyed the video and the music. Sorry for not posting the music, it's just old-age and forgetfulness! By the time I've uploaded the video and written the description I usually forget the music and then have to go back! I'll try and track down the specific tracks and post them up soon. From memory I think the female vocalist may have been Emorie. I'm a huge fan of hers and use her music a lot. Have a great 2021 and many thanks for commenting. I really appreciate it. Best wishes, David :-)
The lovely wee cabin you featured looked wonderful. How did you find it? I would love to stay there on my next trip up north.
Hi Fiona, yes it's a great wee place. Can you message me privately :-)
David Wheater not sure how to message privately.
@@fionarogan570 Hi Fiona, my email is in the About page of this channel, best wishes, David :-)
such a great name
Beautiful videography! I found this video as I’m thinking of relocating from Norfolk to Sutherland or Cairngorms. Do you live in Edinburgh and would you consider living in those areas or do you find them better to just visit? I sense you have a wild heart like me.
Please could you share the wonderful play list you used in the background?
Thank you David! Scotland is so beautiful 😍
Will pray for getting back into well deserved independence!
Warmest regards
Thomas
Thanks Thomas, I am indeed very lucky to live in such a wonderful country. The older I get the more I appreciate it and want to discover more. Best wishes, David
do you need permit to catch fish in the river Tirry, in Lairg?
Hi Donna, I've never fished the Tirry, but I've fished the lochs around Lairg for a long time and I usually get permits from the Dunroamin Caravan Park in Lairg or the Loch Shin Fishing Club just down the road. I would always advise contacting them before fishing. Hope this helps, best wishes, David
Thank you for the info. It’s always been one of my fascination to fish in one of the Scottish river or loch ( once my mum in law take me to Banchory (?!) in Aberdeenshire i remember one of the river was flowing with Salmon 😱😱😍😍.
@@user-ii9rm9zu9p Hi Donna, I love fly-fishing, it's a great way to connect with the land and nature and we have some superb trout lochs here in Scotland and some amazing salmon rivers. I've been thinking for a while about creating a wee package for teaching & guiding fishing - maybe one day! :-)
Wow!!thats nice to hear! I think u have to do some sort of a short documentary / vlog like that. The world will be in awe that it still exists 🙌🏻 ( including me! even though i saw those fishes with my own eyes, i am still in awe!) nature at its best!
@@user-ii9rm9zu9p Hi Donna, it's funny you should say that, because I had planned to do a fishing video when I was up there, but there wasn't enough time. I'm hoping to go up again in about 6 weeks time and I'll definitely do a fishing film then. Thanks for the suggestion and your support, best wishes, David :-)
Cool
Thank you. 👍
Ancestors originally came from Sutherland then got cleared.
