That Les Paul is B-E-A-Uuuutiful! (Even if it is a photo-top) Thanks for the knowledge, had no idea these were licensed! Keep up the great work, Nick!!
Hey James! Thanks for the kind words man. I should start to look for a few more. I have a Benton TE52 that I can borrow as well as some other stuff. Let me shake the friend tree and see what falls. The channel has been super Les Paul sort of guitar heavy of late.
I have a 77 Greco Standard. Love it! I've been meaning to get is a Custom as a friend but haven't found a good one when I've had the dough. I have a video coming up next week for a Burny Custom. Those 80's ones are just killer as well.
I've owned two MIJ Epiphones, they had the same neck and apparently, they're all the same too. I think that it's nicknamed a "tweener" neck, slightly thicker than a slim taper, but not as big as even a '59.
The Foto-Flame Fender pattern did not look like a Big Mac. It looks like the Hamburglar, hence the term "MIJ Hamburglars." I own a Tele, and the pattern repeats itself 2 or 3 time.
I've heard great things about those pickups. Most of the Japanese pickups of this era are actually really cool! Screamin, VH1, U1000/2000/3000. The Maxons. Very cool stuff!
Jeepers there's a big gap in between there! I'll give both a try. I used a 12's set, not sure on the top end gauge but you do get used to it and also do get used to not bending nearly as much! LOL
David I use 12-60 for D standard, and that gauge works fine down to C, but if I go any lower it feels loose. I wanna try 8's, when I was a kid I used 9's but it may be cool to have something different in one of my guitars ;) for B I'd use a baritone set.
Nick, I really like the fact that you cover used gear and interesting stuff at that. This beast is sweet. I would love to own one, but, that will probably never happen. Really interesting facts about making guitars and photo veneers. Thanks for all the great info on guitar history. That Peavey Bandit sounds great. I'm glad you are showing us a viable alternative to tubes! Did you do a review of the Bandit, I can't remember. Later
I still have to do a Bandit video. It's a great amp. And thanks for the kind words. I like the used stuff because there are gems out there and half the fun is the hunt!
Thank you I need your videos! They are like a fret job for the brain. Very good buddy. I'll tell my friend, if I ever get another friend I will tell too! My next new friend and I will have a lot to catch up on.
I like it. I own a gibson but now that I can say that I am happy playing any guitar that speaks to me. my number one is a parts tele with texas specials and no name on the headstock. a few times in life you just find a mutt that feels like it was made for you. peace
I can't agree with you more. I have a cheap Harley Benton LP copy that gets the most play in the collection. And I've built a couple of parts telecasters that will be the last guitars to leave the collection. It's all about the magic of how it all goes together. Doesn't have to be expensive!
Have you reviewed any of the earl slick guitars that guitar fetish sells? I think I will try one this year I love the style of them lightly distressed but made from quality parts. There wre very few reviews online
I haven't yet. They're not really to my liking style wise but seem to be good deals. Guitar Fetish is actually down the street from me. I asked to borrow one to do a review and they said no! There was a used on in the shop by my house but before I could take it for a spin someone bought it. I'll track one down one of these days.
Sweet Matt! This one isn't even mine so I won't be keeping it. It's pretty awesome guitar, but I think my buddy Andy is selling it. He's got some VERY nice expensive axes that get most of this play time.
Saw a Orville Les Paul Jr in cherry red. Had P90s Was in a guitar shop in Amsterdam a year or so ago. I had a little noodle and it played very nice, sounded very nice.
dude i really like your videos !! theyre great thanks i really was rolling when you said its not really set up for metal then put on this face like you where going to rip the roof off with some riffs straight from hell and demon bitten an then bla >i thought it was funny as hell thanks i needed that !!!
I would love it for recording. In fact I'm dubbing some guitars on a track I did quite a few years ago and thinking of using this in series mode with some fuzz.
ooh i've haerd whispers about these Orvilles in the past! i was starting to think they were a myth :) so nice! i much prefer the gibson headstock on Lps, but on some like the 335 i like the look of the epis
Great video as always! Outside of eBay, is there a source for purchasing these Japanese guitars you may know about? I've seen some from time to time on eBay and yes even lefty!!! Just picking your brain Nick keep up the good work!!
You can sometimes get things shipped to the US using Japamart, which is really just a front end for Yahoo Auctions Japan, which is like their eBay. Thanks Ahmad!
Nick, do you own or have you ever owned a 70's lawsuit era Burny LP? Legend has it that they had excellent PUP's and were superior to what Gibson was producing at the time.
Funny you ask. I have a Custom borrowed from a friend from the early 80's at the house right now. I have the cut the video up that I've recorded but hope to have it out this weekend. It's a crazy good guitar. And you're right, way better than anything Gibson was building then.
I love your LP collection and I love your demos, but. . . maybe you could sell one of your guitars and get yerself a nice little tube amp to play on these demos. Tube amps sound soo much better than crappy little transistor amps IMO. Just a suggestion.
Thanks man! I actually have some pretty nice tube amps (Mesa Blue Angel, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Bugera BC-30 and some Phaez amps) but they don't usually excel at low volumes. I'm constantly on the hunt though. These red stripe Peaveys actually have a cult following for being pretty darn cool. I just may not be doing it justice. I'm also going to upgrade my mics that I use on the amps. I think they may be a bit worn out. Thanks for the feedback man!
Nick, a request. Please don't use Bad Ass again. It sounds horrible I think. Amp drive is way better. On the other hand. Japanese LPs are magnificent! I especially adore Lawsuit LPs. I like the Japanuary idea. Rock on!
Nick in the States ...cool..I have the m/n strat and HB cst 24 black cherry flame already shipped....ordering the DC CUSTOM WHITE ...on the first of Feb...nice gold hardware and tuners on this one...anyway. ..good talking to you. ..looking forward to new vids....Corey
sounds like a cheap Washburn I had and played thru a cheap practice amp that I can't even remember the name of, I don't see anything special here. maybe if you set the amp up better, it just all sounded muddy to me and didn't notice any real change when you messed with the pots, maybe should have used the toggle instead of leaving it in the middle on all of them, maybe someone more familiar with the pots and tone controls and which type of music to play for each would have been better then the distorted half ass metal playing in each position.
Sorry Barry! It's been a Les Paul tear of late. The beatings will continue until morale improves as there are a couple more videos coming on Les Paul style guitars this month. BUT I do have a cool telecaster style guitar from the guys at Green Guitars that should be here in a week or so. We did a couple acoustic videos 2 weeks ago. And there's a Tim's take coming for the Bad Cat blue 335 style guitar. So we'll try and mix it up but good feedback. I was supposed to also have a Harley Benton premium Strat style to demo and compare to a series of other strats but alas the rosewood ban ruined those plans.
I try to mix it up but there has been a lot of Les Paul's of late. I'll mix in a couple of SGs during my next video recording session to break up the Les Paul monotony!
I was just looking at one and started thinking about it. Is it really worth it? It looks like the expensive Gibson but how does it really play? I don't have the thousands for the JP Gibson I been lusting over.
Fujigen rocks! They are involved in Many known brands. Ghost builders so to say. Great axe by the way 🎸😎
Yeah man.. great stuff! I have to try and play an FGN one of these days.
Love the look. Pickups seemed a little harsh to me. Thanks for the video, Nick! Great work as usual.
Thanks man!
PRS Rocker I blame the Peavy amp
That Les Paul is B-E-A-Uuuutiful! (Even if it is a photo-top)
Thanks for the knowledge, had no idea these were licensed! Keep up the great work, Nick!!
Thanks Clark! These are super cool.
I love these vids they always get me through my day. Have you ever considered demoing some more "off" Starts or tele's?
Hey James! Thanks for the kind words man. I should start to look for a few more. I have a Benton TE52 that I can borrow as well as some other stuff. Let me shake the friend tree and see what falls. The channel has been super Les Paul sort of guitar heavy of late.
congrats on passing 4K subscribers!
Thanks Landon!
That LP is a beauty. Many of those older Japanese guitars were great axes.
They did and still do a great job.
I've got a 79-80 Greco Les Paul Custom. 50's wiring, heavy, even has the split diamond. It's every bit as nice as my legit LP standard.
I have a 77 Greco Standard. Love it! I've been meaning to get is a Custom as a friend but haven't found a good one when I've had the dough. I have a video coming up next week for a Burny Custom. Those 80's ones are just killer as well.
Look for the big mac. I just learned something. Awesome!
Hey Nick, the Fender Japan foto models had what people referred to as the "hamburgurler's face" not a big mac. Nice guitar!
YES! I screwed that up... my memory is slipping! LOL
On which website can I finde this, to by it ??
looks really nice! thanks for the info. I didn't know Gibson did licensing like that
It's one of their rare (only?) instances of it.
the photo flame neck fender made actually looks like the hamburgler not a big mac
I've owned two MIJ Epiphones, they had the same neck and apparently, they're all the same too.
I think that it's nicknamed a "tweener" neck, slightly thicker than a slim taper, but not as big as even a '59.
That makes sense a lot of sense. Thanks sulphur!
Does it have jimmy page wiring?
It does!
The Foto-Flame Fender pattern did not look like a Big Mac. It looks like the Hamburglar, hence the term "MIJ Hamburglars." I own a Tele, and the pattern repeats itself 2 or 3 time.
Yeah I boned that statement. That's the danger of going from memory!
Mine has the super 70's Maxon pickups and it grawls ...
I've heard great things about those pickups. Most of the Japanese pickups of this era are actually really cool! Screamin, VH1, U1000/2000/3000. The Maxons. Very cool stuff!
I have been using 8s for years. Try it you'll like it.
I've been using 11-54 on my LP's in standard tuning for years. Try it, you'll like it!
Jeepers there's a big gap in between there! I'll give both a try. I used a 12's set, not sure on the top end gauge but you do get used to it and also do get used to not bending nearly as much! LOL
NOOOO!!!!! drop that guitar to B!!!!!!
David I use 12-60 for D standard, and that gauge works fine down to C, but if I go any lower it feels loose. I wanna try 8's, when I was a kid I used 9's but it may be cool to have something different in one of my guitars ;) for B I'd use a baritone set.
Nick in the States bending isn't that hard, unless you try a set with a wound 3rd, that's a whole other story lol.
Orvilles and Orville by Gibson are great guitars!!
Beautiful
Thanks man!
Nick in the States Every time I see you play an LP or LP copy in that color with open pick ups I wanna cry cuz I miss mine. Waaaaaah. ...
Nick, I really like the fact that you cover used gear and interesting stuff at that. This beast is sweet. I would love to own one, but, that will probably never happen. Really interesting facts about making guitars and photo veneers. Thanks for all the great info on guitar history. That Peavey Bandit sounds great. where did you find it?they are super rare
I think Andy found it on Reverb or maybe japamart. Not sure. You have to hunt for them, that's for sure.
Japanmart oh i didn't know that site I ll check it out
The Big problem is that this guitar are hard to find in Italy
It looks like the patten on the top does change a fair bit on the close up shots. I reckon it is a thin veneer like the Chi**ons!
It just may be... it's weird.
That's nice! My friends in European have many of them. My Asian friends go for the Gibsons.
They're pretty darn cool.
How much does the guitar retail for and does it hold it's value for resale???
What years and models did Orville make under Gibson license permission?
1988-1998
Thank you I need your videos! They are like a fret job for the brain. Very good buddy. I'll tell my friend, if I ever get another friend I will tell too! My next new friend and I will have a lot to catch up on.
Glad you enjoy them Kevin. Making them somehow keeps me sort of sane... or perhaps just fosters the good madness.
I like it. I own a gibson but now that I can say that I am happy playing any guitar that speaks to me. my number one is a parts tele with texas specials and no name on the headstock. a few times in life you just find a mutt that feels like it was made for you. peace

There was a used on in the shop by my house but before I could take it for a spin someone bought it. I'll track one down one of these days.
They are okay, I bought one, but i was not impressed...
They refused you a sample as they do not want it known that they are very low quality.
Learnt something new about the Gibson license thing 👍 fountain of knowledge my main man. Is she a keeper though ?
Sweet Matt! This one isn't even mine so I won't be keeping it. It's pretty awesome guitar, but I think my buddy Andy is selling it. He's got some VERY nice expensive axes that get most of this play time.
Is that Mama Kin? I've been trying to figure it out for a year.
It's a bastardized version of parts of it. Really just a pushed Chuck Berry thing in E.
Nice! Were they only made for the domestic market in Japan? Here in Europe you hardly ever gonna see an Orville.
Yup, only Japanese Domestic Market. We don't see them much here in the states either.
Saw a Orville Les Paul Jr in cherry red. Had P90s Was in a guitar shop in Amsterdam a year or so ago. I had a little noodle and it played very nice, sounded very nice.
How do these compare to the Shenzhen Badcat Unicorns? Do you think the Shengze’s are a good value? I’m thinking about getting a gold top.
these are push/push pots? nice guitar, thanks for the information about that
These are push pull. You're welcome!
How much Mr States?
These are about $1500 used... but garden variety ones can be had for as little as $600 give or take.
dude i really like your videos !! theyre great thanks i really was rolling when you said its not really set up for metal then put on this face like you where going to rip the roof off with some riffs straight from hell and demon bitten an then bla >i thought it was funny as hell thanks i needed that !!!
How do you like the wiring? I did that pain in the ass JP wiring on my Standard and never use it. Doing it is not easy.
I would love it for recording. In fact I'm dubbing some guitars on a track I did quite a few years ago and thinking of using this in series mode with some fuzz.
SWEET GUITAR NICK
Thanks JayJKay!
Love "The Metal"!!!
Joyo California sound.... best $30 a guy can spend to get really driven tones if you don't have a Mesa Rectifier sitting around.
What are the specs on this guitar? I'm looking at some Japanese LP guitars. Year?
Take the neck pickup off and look at the cap, that should tell you whether it is real flame or photoflame.
I'll do that at next string change
ooh i've haerd whispers about these Orvilles in the past! i was starting to think they were a myth :) so nice! i much prefer the gibson headstock on Lps, but on some like the 335 i like the look of the epis
I like the Casino headstocks as well. I just don't like it when the corners are nibbled off on the Epi Les Pauls.
yeah i ruins it on a LP!
Reverb all the way
Jamal Kareem reverb or Ishibashi
Nick, do you own or have you ever owned a 70's lawsuit era Burny LP? Legend has it that they had excellent PUP's and were superior to what Gibson was producing at the time.
Funny you ask. I have a Custom borrowed from a friend from the early 80's at the house right now. I have the cut the video up that I've recorded but hope to have it out this weekend. It's a crazy good guitar. And you're right, way better than anything Gibson was building then.
do some pagey 2 step bends, make it sing, and we'll see how close to a real Les Paul it is !!
Looks like a maple veneer top to me, rather than a photoflame.
It's hard in the video vs in person. I'm 75 / 25 sure it's a photo flame
It doesn't look like a Big Mac, it looks like Hamburgler.
Yup, I messed that one up. Thanks Craig!
its real maple, photoflame doesnt change in light like that
No it isn't. I have the same guitar with identical flame patterns. =)
I love your LP collection and I love your demos, but. . . maybe you could sell one of your guitars and get yerself a nice little tube amp to play on these demos. Tube amps sound soo much better than crappy little transistor amps IMO. Just a suggestion.

Noice!
Yessir!
Thank you for not playing Stairway to heaven. ...
HAHA You're welcome. I was tempted.
Whoa cool guitar. ..HEY. .. I left you a new comment on the bad cat First Take vid...you must read
Got it Corey. Thanks and Brilliant!
Nick in the States ...cool..I have the m/n strat and HB cst 24 black cherry flame already shipped....ordering the DC CUSTOM WHITE ...on the first of Feb...nice gold hardware and tuners on this one...anyway. ..good talking to you. ..looking forward to new vids....Corey
wasn't that a hamburglar?
YES! That's what I get when I go from memory. Definitely the hamburglar!
I don't think Les Paul would have been thrilled with this...his guitars are Epiphone and Gibson..
sounds like a cheap Washburn I had and played thru a cheap practice amp that I can't even remember the name of, I don't see anything special here. maybe if you set the amp up better, it just all sounded muddy to me and didn't notice any real change when you messed with the pots, maybe should have used the toggle instead of leaving it in the middle on all of them, maybe someone more familiar with the pots and tone controls and which type of music to play for each would have been better then the distorted half ass metal playing in each position.
Check your email I sent some pictures
Will reply later today!
Too much bass!!
Eq pedal is your best friend
Has a Jimmy Page model, plays nothing that sounds remotely like Page :(
Those aren’t much less than an actual Gibson Les Paul. Silly to buy one really
They are more expensive than I expected.
sorry nick but yawn another les paul
Sorry Barry! It's been a Les Paul tear of late. The beatings will continue until morale improves as there are a couple more videos coming on Les Paul style guitars this month. is it all les paul don't you do other guitars like sg
I try to mix it up but there has been a lot of Les Paul's of late. I'll mix in a couple of SGs during my next video recording session to break up the Les Paul monotony!
awesome thanks nick
It IS a real Les Paul! Too much talking and not enough playing...
Sounds too muddy.
I hate to say this ...but his videos are very hard to watch !
take a guitar lesson bro
Can't play worth a nickel though
My Chinese JP#2 is infinitely better.
I was just looking at one and started thinking about it. Is it really worth it? It looks like the expensive Gibson but how does it really play? I don't have the thousands for the JP Gibson I been lusting over.
Out of tune, just like a real Gibson!
Atrocious playing as usual. Decent guitar though.
hey you've got some pretty sick videos of your expertly skilled playing too....
