To be honest I'm really glad that they've made Rihanna the hacker, it seems as if the stereotype for that role is always pale person with glasses, but as a pale person with glasses who works in tech, it's nice to see them shake it up a little

It interesting that this is more of a spin off than reboot. Since Bullock is playing Danny Ocean's sister it means the movie takes place in the same universe and could possubly set up a crossover movie later on.

I loved Ann Hathaway's part in Ocean's 8, I loved how she wasn't so one dimensional and was revealed to actually know everything without being explicit
I was never worried about the cast, it's good. Really good. It all hinges on the writing, if the writing fails then this much charisma won't be enough to carry it forward.
Yep. Or the editing. That was the ultimate failing of the most recent Ghostbusters. The leading ladies were all pretty talented, but the writers/editors pretty much killed all the humor stone dead.
Some of my favourite actresses remaking one of the coolest movie concepts in cinema history.

Not gender swapped. Same edge, different slant. Different title, surprising and not predictable casting, and not a gimmick but an expansion. It is not Ghostbusters; more like Bourne Legacy.

Lost Age Comics problem with GhostBusters wasn't just the casting (though it did play a role). It was the fact that it put humour over story. The story of the original Ghostbusters was about 4 people who were hunting ghost and standing up to a governmental authority. The humour was mostly deadpan and if didn't enjoy the humour you still had an interesting story to watch. With the 2016 version the humour was all over the place, the story was forgettable and the actors did to much improve. The final issue isn't as much unique to Ghostbusters as it is to Mordern American comedy in general.

I love Awkwafina’s characters. They always have a fun energy.
Mindy Kaling is clearly the parody of Bernie Mac, and Helena Bonham Carter is the twins. Bernie's character was a black salesman, he's a minority who found success through his charisma and masculnity. Just like Mindy is unashamedly girly, Bernie was overtly a man's man. Helena Bonham Carter is unpredictable and as you point out dualistic in personality, she is both of the twins wrapped up in one.

I am an Ocean’s movie fan. Seen the ratpack one and then the 2000’s remake. Just finished watching Ocean’s 8 and I must say I enjoyed it. It had a similar flow to the original and I thoroughly enjoyed the updated casting. I don’t think the movie was spectacular, none of the Ocean’s movie were spectacular. It’s just a great confidence movie franchise that fun to watch. Really it’s a confidence fantasy as I am sure as much as they make it seem the jobs they pull are doable I highly doubt they are. It’s always fun to want to be one of those characters. Probably a world you may never be a part of outside a movie.

I don't have a problem with someone making an all female heist movie because it does sound pretty interesting, but I just think it's kind of annoying that big studios are trying to fit all of there new movies into the catagories of prequel, sequel, remake, or something taking place in the same universe as something that's already sucessful.
They're doing that because audiences aren't watching "new" movies, especially when it comes to blockbusters that cost so much money to make. If they made a heist movie with just women with the same budget as this and didn't tie it into the Ocean's franchise, they'd more than likely lose money. Doesn't even matter that they've got recognizable actresses, it's just too big a risk. Ask yourself the last time you went to go a see blockbuster that wasnt a sequel, prequel, remake or a comic book movie.
@Peter E That's not entire true, Baby driver, Atomic Blonde, John Wick, A quite Place, Get Out are example that the audience really want new things. Honestly, with this cast, the studio could sell anything

xTLtokio you're right Baby Driver is one of my favourite films and I think that is in part because it was completely new and original. We aren't watching new movies much because they can't offer them to us, big production companies go with a safer route that they know will work. We only watch remakes/sequels/prequels/etc... because that is the only thing offered to us. I thought Ocean 8 was an entirely new film, as opposed to a spin-off, until a few months ago when I saw some guys complaining because "hurr-durr feminism how dare females be portrayed in a cool action movie" before that it was completely foreign and new to me (I was only 2 when the first movie would have come out) and I knew a lot of people that were the same so it's definitely not because audiences choose to watch remakes, it's because we pretty much only can watch remakes

Good video - seeing the two opening prison scenes side by side really emphasises the difference in style though. There's a big contrast between the soft, romcom style colours of Ocean's 8 vs the harsher cool palette of the original.
wow this is great. I've seen a lot of movie analyses on youtube, many of which are always centered on cinematography, directions, scores and/or script/stories. Rarely have I stumbled on one about casting process and the logic behind it. thanks for making this video and casting some light on that.

Care Blanchett truly had a very elusive component especially her hair was always covering her face which made her mysteriously in a veey subtle way.

For those asking why they just don't make a new heist movie with a all female cast, my answer is this, would you go see it? We all wanna blame Hollywood for being a sequel/remake factory but the problem is every time they spend money on something new, it bombs. Maybe they just need to rethink the whole idea of summer blockbusters and the way movies are released in general, but until then, there's really no other way to make money with these movies.

yes, the public would actually want to see a good heist movie. did you look at the cast? the cast is awesome. they totally couldve given this movie an original title. but no, they just have to ride on the glory of the old franchise. so much for female empowerment
Yes, I would go see it. Also, the numerous sequels and remakes are not guaranteed successes. Ghostbusters is an excellent example of this. The issue is that Hollywood refuses to put real money behind a female-heavy cast *unless* the film is already part of some brand. The whole "we can't back this because it's new and it'll bomb" is a crap excuse. However, I do agree that Hollywood needs to rethink the summer blockbuster and the release of action/adventure films.
PompeySomerstown Annihilation didn't do well for a number of reasons. Because it was "new", wasn't one of them.

I was kinda disappointed when I was told this was basically spin-off (and my parents emitting the vibe that they considered it to be a cheap and lazy attempt at female empowerment which was also disheartening) but I was very impressed by the cast because for the first time I recognized almost all of them (i didn't know who awkwafina was).

I agree that other women should be able to play any role no matter gender norms, but I am getting bored with the same story with the only change being the main character's sex/gender identity. I get why more people want this(and more power to you if you do) but I'd rather see a group of awesome female leads in a movie that's original and fresh instead of a story that has already been told.
on one hand it is original and fresh to a whole new generation of people who've never seen the original, it did come out over a decade ago
I agree w this in some ways, but I think that it depends on the story. The Oceans franchise is the perfect movie for a swap like this because of how simple yet recognizable it is, allowing for a more flexible, yet still recognizable and brandable film. The concept is “after being released from jail, (person) wants to commit the crime of the century, and gathers a group of experts to help commit it”. This leaves a lot up to the cast and crew to bend.
Yeah. I get where you're coming from. I'm close to the same opinion. But... this might actually turn out to be a good film, and is one of the few franchises that could work with a gender swap, since it basically boils down to being a heist film with great actors having a good time. And it looks like, apart from the general concept, they might have actually changed up the plot enough to make it new and interesting. But... I'll have to reserve judgment until I see it.
I guess the issue of the 2000s is that there are too many remakes or movie versions of books or video games. Nothing is original.
