    today I ran across the video that brought me to the two (four) of you. It is called Life Afloat. One of your vlogs was part of the right hand que. I am so delighted and pleased that you did. I spent this morning catching up on any that I had missed. I watch. London Boat Girl. Cruising the Cut, Minimal List, This Narrowboat Adventure et al. Whenever I need a laugh or am feeling low, I watch one of these channels and they give me a real lift. Thanks All.(and any four legged creatures as well). Cheers. Diana

    Having lived with fire's most of my life , open , solid fuel burners and old fashioned ovens , I was turning big tree's into logs and morning stick's from when I was 7 . I've learned to put a base of anthracite down first , when you clean the fire out any bits about a inch or more put them back in on the bottom , keep all your coal dust and saw dust then mix it together with water to make a thick paste ( like cement ) and put about a pint in a paper bag roll it up into a sausage and drop at the back of the fire and it will burn slowly all night . But the big one is if you can get some Welsh steam coal use that it's mostly smokless and it burns with a lovely heat .

    • @TheNarrowboatExperience
      @TheNarrowboatExperience  6 лет назад

      To be honest I had to google anthracite. Then are you saying you re-burnt the ash?

    • @andyward8336
      @andyward8336 6 лет назад +1

      Not the ash , but as you clean out the bottom of the fire if you have been burning coal you will see bits of part burned coal similar to coke ( coke the old smokeless fuel we used to get from th gas works ) so any bits the size of a cherry tomato you put back in the bottom ad they will burn again as the temp gets up . So if you go to the Black Country Museum you will see piles of this out the back of the houses, and the nail maker goes round with a riddle gets the big bits and uses them in the furnace. I would say for every 25kg bag of coal burned you could re burn about 3kg of unburnt coal .

    these coffee logs are great, what we have here in south Australia, a company called BONE Timber very SA company they have sort of the same thing and yes they are brilliant as we have a combustion heater at home leave for a few hours, then put a few logs of wood on and its set for the night.

    Thanks for a great and informative video. My stove is fixed! But the boat is still with Boating Leisure Services while they finish the repaint and work required. The signwriter painted the name on last Friday and it looks fantastic, I can’t wait to collect it. I think those logs look good and think they would be fine for my requirements as we’ve also had the heating repaired and modified and apparently it’s really hot, so the stove, I hope will be back up. I could store those nice clean logs under the bed for emergencies or cosy fireside evenings. As always I love your videos. Thanks.

    Nice review girls. Just spent last week on my mates nb on the Shroppy (ice breaking lol). I asked what could I bring, he said 2 bags of smokeless coal and Guinness :-) As I have an open coal fire I collect my coal from the merchants myself, I bought 2 bags (£15) of their smokeless oviods and took them (haven't got a brand name, they were loose). To our surprise they were incredible throwing out lots of heat with very little ash. My mate said he has tried all the various smokeless coal on the market, but, has never had any as hot as these were. 1 bag lasted from Saturday til Wednesday burning 24 hours. Had to open the Cratch doors and sometimes open the windows when it was freezing outside. Gonna try them on my home fire. :-)

    • @TheNarrowboatExperience
      @TheNarrowboatExperience  6 лет назад

    I read a tip somewhere from someone who said to put your coal (of desired amount) into individual paper bags and put them in fire like that. You don't get your fingers messy and its easy to store.

    I love the idea of using recycled materials in our Morso Squirrel. We use the coffee logs and a product made from bracken, brackenburn brakettes I think they are called. I use the logs a bit like you, one on a base of embers in the morning to get the boat warm and then add the coal before the structure of the logs breaks down. I wish they did smell like coffee. Btw we bought ours from Bunnings for about six pounds a bag.

    • @TheNarrowboatExperience
      @TheNarrowboatExperience  6 лет назад

      So I just googled Brackenburn brakettes and they look great. We are going to see if we can buy some- but we have to check the budget first. Thanks for the recommendation.

  • @avrilcrisp5725

    These sound ideal for those cold days/nights when you dont want a roaring fire all day but want some cosy heat to warm you and your kettle. You should try one of your jacket potatoes with this method. From a personal point of view you cant beat a coal and log combination.

  • @ncplantdoctor
    @ncplantdoctor 6 лет назад

    Loved the intro. I would have loved to have cuddled with one of you, but he probably would not have been receptive. Cats don’t like strangers. Too bad that coffee logs don’t smell like coffee while burning, because that would be a selling point. Rumor has it that when biodiesel began with recycled fried chicken oil, sales of fried chicken increased around where the biodiesel was burned. It has been said that the busses smelled vaguely like fried chicken. As for the tea logs you suggested, don’t forget about burning melaleuca wood. That is called the tea tree and grows wild in Florida and the land down under.

      Munchy is such a fluff bear that he would be playing hard to get for about 3 mins and then you'd be old friends. He doesn't go up to strangers- but we kind of like that. Though one time during the last summer he howled and howled to all of the people at the park about how hot it was and how hot the boat was and acted homeless until we had to go and fetch him. Sometimes I really just think he's on the look out for a better home! He won't find one- we are his servants- he has Kath trained to carry him around when she is cooking!

    • @TheNarrowboatExperience
      @TheNarrowboatExperience  6 лет назад

      Hi Paul, our boiler is broken at the moment. Last year, when it was working, we only used it for additional heat because the radiators heat up quicker than the boat. It burns a lot of diesel and is really loud so its not really ideal to run full time.

    Nice review, thank you. Curious as a cat I searched for coffee logs on youtube and found a „how to make your own“ video. Annamarie needs to drink just a bit more coffee and then you could heat up the boat with your own home made coffee logs 😬😂 I like the idea of useing renewable resources for heating. We do use various types of wood chip logs for our fire and they are really good. Hard wood logs for over night glow and the mixed wood types during the rest of the day. Did you find a kcal on the package stating how much energy a certain amount of the coffee logs produces?

    • @TheNarrowboatExperience
      @TheNarrowboatExperience  6 лет назад

      Funny we were talking about playing around trying to make our own. I'm not sure Anna drinks enough coffee or how long they would take to dry out. Nothing about kcal on the package sorry.

      The Narrowboat Experience not exactly the link I was looking for, but you might get the idea... ruclips.net/video/LJZgo4CA6lA/видео.html the one I originally saw was pressed into a empty and cleaned milk tetrapak which could be burnt with the whole log. So alternatively maybe fire starters made of coffee ground, wax and a bit sugar in empty cardboard egg boxes instead 😎

    • @kimballard8362
      @kimballard8362 6 лет назад +1

      Way to low, black glass excessive soot in flue, you should sweep it twice in the burning season if flue temp that low, don't shut your stove right down if not Defra approved, if you do slumber it down overnight crank it way up in the morning to clear the flue.
      I assume you have a CO alarm fitted? one meter from the stove and 6" from the ceiling Hetas recommendation, and I'm sure you a good working smoke alarm fitted ?
      The coffee logs I find burn very dirty unless you really crank up the stove so stopped using them, I stick to kiln dried ash logs in my van Hobbit stove, I guess with a boat it's hard to store them in any quantity.
      I'm sorry to go on a bit I am a chimney sweep and stove installer and safety is paramount to me, love your vids take care.

      We’ve got the co2 alarm fitted on the wall near the stove. And a smoke alarm.
      We’ll clean the flue again and see if the temperature goes up.
      Annoyingly never checked the flue temperature before your first message so don’t know if it’s ever been hot enough.

      We use coffee logs for a quick burst of heat first thing in the morning or evening. I think it would be rather expensive to run the fire off them full time. 1 log lasts about 2 hrs in our stove so a bag of 16 wouldn’t last that long. We prefer the coal for now.

    I'm eager to know, do they smell of coffee? I love the smell of coffee! Also, if you're reviewing different logs could you list their dimensions as some of us with small stoves really struggle.
    Would love to see a comparison with something like www.bmstores.co.uk/products/quickflame-firelog-309325
    I've been using these all winter, last about 3 hours in my little pipsqueak stove (have to saw them in half lengthways to get them thru the stove door but they're soft and waxy, cut easily with a breadknife), no need for kindling or firelighters just light the bag. I'll admit one of the reasons I'm using them is the nearest shop to my mooring is B&M, but I reckon I'm getting more heat than I get with Excel and more heat per £ than Phurnacite. Also, no matter how far I close the fire down they will not go out, mix one with any type of coal and I can extinguish the coal by closing the spinners but the log keeps smouldering.

      They smell a little bit like coffee when you open the bag but not when they are burning. These logs are about 15cm long and 7cm in diameter. Thats rough estimation from memory because we've burnt all the ones we had.
      We are burning Excel at the moment and find it is the best in our stove of the smokeless fuels we've tried. A comparison of different fuels is a great idea for a vlog - thanks for that. We probably won't get to it for a while but maybe as next winter approaches when we have a little bit more time.

      We are burning Excel mostly and it works well for us. Keeps the boat nice and warm and was under £10 for 25kg. We tried some stuff from B&Q and it was rubbish in comparison. Also tried Homefire ovals and Supertherm. They had a lot more ash than the excel but a similar performance in the stove.
      Will give anthracite a go next time, thanks for the tip.
